This is a great video and super helpful. My washer had this exact same noise and so I replaced the mode shifter. However, it's still behaving like this. I find the mode shifter blue servo spends a lot of time spinning and the lever arm just goes up and down. The washer won't enter spin or agitate test. The mode shifter just does this spinning thing for a while until the washer gives up and stops. There are no error codes. When running a normal cycle the washer will add two squirts of water and then try to do the cycle but the mode shifter will put the clutch in the exact wrong position so it does grind and doesn't fully engage. It'll make the awful noise a few times and then the washer will act like it's done. Have you seen this ever? I'm wondering if it's a bad signal from the control board or something? Old mode shifter measures at 5.7kohms, new one measures about 4.8kohms but both have same behavior.

Thanks for this video. I added it to my one star review for this washer. There is no way those important parts should be made of cheap plastic. It is designed to fail. Whatever happened to consumer protections? As a side note, I tried to show this video to a GE repairman since my machine is under warranty. He looked away and said he doesn't learn repair from watching RUclips videos. Then proceeded to tell me it was the belt which he replaced and after he left the noise started up again. If GE wants to waste their money I will keep calling them back. I have the extended service plan. If they keep sending technicians like that they will have spent 10 times the cost of this machine in service calls.

Your washer should have a 1 yr warranty with it. Mine started doing this when it hit a year old on new years day. I have the extended warranty, so they covered it. Now flash foward 4 months later, it's doing it again.
I just had the repairman here. This machine is less than a year old & started making this noise this week. The guy said it’s a normal noise & nothing to be done about it. I’m furious. Another repairman is coming tomorrow.
@@lesliechew7293 I haven't had a washer and dryer last more than 2 years. This new crap is crap. I'm going to switch back to an old fashion ringer washer.

I haven't torn into my washer just yet, but my washer looks exactly like this one, and is making exactly that noise, so now I guess I have a very solid lead on what the problem PROBABLY is, and I'm gonna investigate soon. Thank you!
Thank you! I had a similar issue where the wiring harness for the speed sensor loosened up and got tangled in the drive belt. Made a very similar grinding noise. So I went ahead and order a new sensor, pully, spring, gear and shifter for just about $100 total. Viola! Like new washing machine. Love that you made the instructions so easy to follow.
@@DuctTapeMechanic I was also able to avoid spending over $120 on the new speed sensor for my model by buying an $8 speed sensor for similar models and splicing it onto the wiring harness for my model.
Very informative & helpful video without being long & drawn out! My machine was making more of a squeaking noise than a grinding one, but I pulled that plastic safety shield off to check things out anyway. Instead of chunks of white plastic/nylon, I found more of a black dust. I immediately said "I know what that is...belt dust!!!" Sure as can be, I looked at the belt first thing and found that on the splined pulley (connected to the motor), the belt had somehow jumped up one spline so that the edge of the belt was rubbing against the large flat edge of the pulley. I pulled down on the belt while turning the pulley, got it back where it belonged, and all my troubles went away!! I'm still going to replace the belt as the one edge is pretty chewed up. But, until it gets here, the current one is still running the machine! $10 "preventative maintenance" vs. the $130 I thought I was going to have to shell out for a new transmission/bearing platform!
I just got my new washer today, started my first load and it makes the "Normal" noise that yours makes after repair. I didnt think that was normal after having a front loader for 20 yrs. After reading comments, I'm so glad I got the 5 year warranty on my New GE Washer Model # GTW465ASNWW. although you make it look so easy to repair... due to knee pain I would not be able to do this. and honestly, I just don't want to hear my husband cussing if he were to try. LOL
Hey. These washers are noisy when everything’s working perfectly. That said, make sure you raise the washer off the floor and level it by turning the bottom feet. Your clothes will get twisted and tangles if the feet are all the way to the floor.
EDIT: This washer is very different than mine inside. Mine has a "clutchless" motor. I cannot get any part behind the pulley, except the whole motor... It's only $100 more to buy a new washer. I'm still going to take it apart and grease/clean the back of the pulley. If that works... Great! If not I will be getting a new washer. THANK YOU!!!! You saved me waiting like a month to get my GE repaired!!! I'm going to order the part today, but mine only made the grinding noise for about 15 seconds before I turned it off. It does not grind in the spin cycle. Tonight I will take it apart and grease it, and see if I can finish my one load without grinding. It was not grinding last time I used it, then we had to move it as I had a broken pipe that supplied water to the washer. This is the first time I tried to use it since it was moved. BTW... Liked and Subbed!!!
Thank you man I did exactly what you said no excessive talking in the video you were straight to the point & it worked my machine is working good as new.👍🏿
Love the video. Thought that was my problem because it’s sounds like the drum is moving while washing but discovered it was not moving. Disassembled and I had sticky black shavings of some sort. Clutch and shifter looks good. Just has a black residue on them. Not for sure.
Just got through fixing my washer. Took me a little while, I had to just tilt back the washer at 45 degrees, I didn't have the room to lay it flat. The only issue I had was getting the pulley wheel off, at that angle it was hard to get an angle. I had already took out the mode shifter bolts and it happened to fall out while I was banging on the pulley and that gave me more room, so got it off pretty quick then. No other issues and so far the washer is working fine. Less than $75 to fix, including overnight shipping on the parts. Thanks for the video, made it fairly easy.
Hey, have you got any portable dishwasher repair videos. I have a whirlpool dishwasher that the pump seems to have weakened. It will still pump out water but only a small stream. I’m hoping it’s just clogged up. Right now, I’m just bailing it out between cycles
Thanks for the video..I had this exact same problem..I ordered the parts from GE and a clutch, spring, and shifter came to $53 with shipping….great video!!thanks again
I recorded the sound and it’s just like this. I’ll still have to call a repairman since I can’t repair. But the great thing is being able to share the issue and this video!! Thanks!!!
One note, my washer was fairly new (2 years old) and there was a grinding sound during the SPIN cycle. So I ordered a clutch kit from amazon to do the repair ($18). But after taking it part I didn't have the debris from grinding plastic. It turned out to be the shift motor assembly needed to be replaced ($24). so this might be helpful for some people with a similar problem.
if the shift motor is the problem then during the "spin" cycle (spin drying cycle) it will NOT spin and make that grinding noise once as it "tries" to engage. @@jenniferwilliamson2777
So I had the exact same noise. Followed the video. But had black residue instead of white. So my problem was the pulley wheel instead of clutch. Easy replacement THANKS‼️
Thank you, I had the people that sold me mine try to tell me it was normal .. I immediately searched and found this to respond with 🤣🤣🤣 and now their technician will follow your instructions 🙏
Thanks so much for this video. I am leaning toward chucking my 15 month old noisy washer after reading the comments below. I don't want to be doing this once a year. I don't want to be doing this at all.
Thanks for the video….i just installed my new one that I have been sitting on for 2 years thanks to home warranty company that replaced my old one because of this noise I think…so before I toss out my old one I will check this part tomorrow.
Good idea to replace pulley while at it. I still had some noise until I replaced mine. I read someplace that the pulley can cause noise as the nut can work loose over time. Tightening it periodically may save some cash and labor in the future if the noise starts again. Can you please provide the correct torque for the pulley nut sir?
So I replaced my mode shifter and it still gets stuck. My washer wasn’t agitating but it does spin. I noticed there is no contact with the teeth on the bottom for it to agitate. Am I missing something? If you could give me your input that will be greatly appreciated. Thank you and keep up the great work.
Hi! Thanks for the great video. I just did the replacement you show in your video and it helped a ton. But once I got the washer back up on it's feet, I can get it to start to fill, but it won't actually continue or move onto the next cycle. I figure I must've done something, but no idea what might have caused this. Got any suggestions? EDIT: Solved it. It helps if you PLUG IN the mode shifter!!! FML 😂
Another Great Video. can you show us how to use the Service test mode for Diagnostics and how to read the basic Wiring Schematics for the system please...
Changing mine this afternoon, except for the spring, which hasn't arrived yet. If there's an issue as is, I'll just repeat the disassembly and switch out the spring ($9 for the spring???). I saw much cheaper timer assemblies, but settled on one that I KNEW would be new and the color was bright white vs some of the others that were obviously old/yellow-beige. My clutch sprocket was about $9, spring @ $9, and I think the timer was @ $39, so I'm pleased with this one.
I’m super impressed at how damn smart you are! I’m an accountant and people call me smart… but I’m blown away at how much you know about machines and t How they work! My GE washer is making a CONSTANT grinding noise during agitation. I tried opening up to see if dolly bent up the bottom cover but nothing was touching. Your video show intermittent grinding and based on your remedy I can understand what’s happening… the teeth are slipping. What do you recommend I look at for constant grinding? I really appreciate any help you can provide!
I appreciate the kind words. A bad clutch could certainly cause constant grinding. I would tip the washer on its side, take off belt guard, and examine pulley and clutch for flakes/plastic wear. If there are flakes replace the clutch (possibly the shifter actuator as well), if no visible signs of damage it could be the gearbox is shot. Hopefully this helps
I watched your video very informative, I have replaced drain pumps on other washing machines, but I was a little intimidated with this newer model, but it seems pretty much the same which I was very thankful to see,
I hope that’s my problem. It’s definitely making the same sounds. Very noticeable at the beginning of the cycle and somewhere mid cycle. I’ll order the parts and see if it resolves it. Thanks so much for the video.
If the clutch doesn't get replaced, could that then lead to other issues like the wash and spin cycles won't work? But it fills and drains. Seeing this i remember hearing the grinding noise at first, and now here we are with an agitator that doesn't move and a spin cycle that won't spin.
Sounds like mine too. The evolution of those spindles just completely failing now. My washer used to at least finish the job Now it doesn’t spin at all
Thanks for this video. I replaced and griding sound is gone but now it has a sounds like rocks are in the tube on the wash cycle. Could this be the case?
If it sounds like a jet, then you will need to replace transmission (the bearings are sealed inside and cannot be accessed). Here is my video on how to do it: ruclips.net/video/gBqgwLyOEW0/видео.html
Followed your instructions step by step replaced the clutch and the shifter and on the wash cycle my washer is making grinding noise and I lift the lid and the water is sitting still. Have no idea what the problem is. The spin cycle works fine. Considering just buying a new.
Duct tape mechanic,gr8 video. I've got a similar washer with this issue. On mine I notice that the shaft that the pulley bolts to moves in and out about 1/8 inch. Should the shaft be moving that much? Also I think I this machine uses too much water. Your feedback would be appreciated. I went to see about replacing my washer and I was frightened by the prices, I said "NO WAY JOSE' " so I've decided to try to fix it instead which brought me to your repair videos. Man you're✌ lifesaver. I can imagine all the washers and dryers you've saved from the landfills 💯👍.
A little bit of play is normal, too much play indicates bearings in transmission are failing (grinding will probably continue despite new clutch). 1/8 of an inch should be ok I would definitely procede with the repair and see what happens. I appreciate the support for the channel.
@@DuctTapeMechanic ; Thanks so much for your quick response. Yes I suspect that the transmission is probably bad. I'm going to replace the transmission assembly. Thanks again 👍😁.
Good video, got me in the ballpark however mine turned out to be the motor pulley not the clutch, as a tip I did not fine white particles from the clutch, I had dark brown/black debris as the motor pulley was dark brown… Good info.
Due to popular demand. I have linked all parts (clutch, spring and shifter) as pop-up links that show up at the bottom of the video!
can you post the part numbers for both parts, please?

@@Felipe-ou4jz Replace the clutch. I have a video on how to do it for whirlpool/kenmore/maytag/Amana (all the same company).
@@DuctTapeMechanic oh man! I will follow the video. Thank you so much! 😎
Dude! I just bought my washer like 6 months ago. My girl was certain there was something under the agitator... I was starting to think so too until I found this video.. Sucks such a new machine needs such an expensive repair, but I'm gonna have to do this. Thanks a lot for your video
Your washer should have a 1 yr warranty with it. Mine started doing this when it hit a year old on new years day. I have the extended warranty, so they covered it. Now flash foward 4 months later, it's doing it again.
@@JMarrieexactly the same thing with mine. 6 months after new it started doing it. Parts were replaced, 4 months later it's doing it again. Junk.
@@lesliechew7293 Any luck?
Thanks! See previous comment.
you are my hero. I have been banging my head and have already bought a couple tools to figure out what was happening. Thank you so much!
You are very welcome!
This just happened to ours after buying it one year ago brand new, watched your video, ordered the parts and bam! Runs like a charm! Thanks for the video!
Great work on the repair l. Glad you found the video helpful
Where do you buy the parts? Which stores or website?
@@hilarysvariety5839 Amazon has what you need
I haven't torn into my washer just yet, but my washer looks exactly like this one, and is making exactly that noise, so now I guess I have a very solid lead on what the problem PROBABLY is, and I'm gonna investigate soon. Thank you!
Best of luck!
Great work! Glad you found the video helpful!
@@DuctTapeMechanic I was also able to avoid spending over $120 on the new speed sensor for my model by buying an $8 speed sensor for similar models and splicing it onto the wiring harness for my model.
@@douglasmclean2802 you are the man! great job
Very nice! Great job troubleshooting!
LOL
A 5 year warranty for a GE is definitely a good idea!
Hey. These washers are noisy when everything’s working perfectly. That said, make sure you raise the washer off the floor and level it by turning the bottom feet. Your clothes will get twisted and tangles if the feet are all the way to the floor.
EDIT:
This washer is very different than mine inside.
This guy knows his stuff. Straight to the point no bs!!
Appreciate the kind words!
Thank you for this video! It helped me fix my washer in less than 30 minutes and you don't need power tools just a socket set!! Easy fix
You're welcome!
Thanks for this video! I’m saving it now so my husband can fix our GE washer that’s doing this exact same noise
Thanks for watching! Best of luck to your husband!
Thank you man I did exactly what you said no excessive talking in the video you were straight to the point & it worked my machine is working good as new.👍🏿
Awesome! Glad I could help!
Love the video. Thought that was my problem because it’s sounds like the drum is moving while washing but discovered it was not moving. Disassembled and I had sticky black shavings of some sort. Clutch and shifter looks good. Just has a black residue on them. Not for sure.
Did exactly what you did and it’s still making that sound. Not as loud and not as often but still making that grinding sound
Sometimes it can be the transmission pulley that needs to be replaced as well
I typed washing machine grinding. This is the first video that came up and exactly the one I needed thanks!!!
That's awesome! Best of luck with the repair
@@DuctTapeMechanic thank you !!
Great tips! Glad it worked out!
Glad it helped
I recorded the sound and it’s just like this. I’ll still have to call a repairman since I can’t repair. But the great thing is being able to share the issue and this video!! Thanks!!!
One note, my washer was fairly new (2 years old) and there was a grinding sound during the SPIN cycle. So I ordered a clutch kit from amazon to do the repair ($18). But after taking it part I didn't have the debris from grinding plastic. It turned out to be the shift motor assembly needed to be replaced ($24). so this might be helpful for some people with a similar problem.
Wonderful tip! I also recommend replacing the clutch and actuator at the same time!
Did it spin during the spin cycle or just make a noise.
if the shift motor is the problem then during the "spin" cycle (spin drying cycle) it will NOT spin and make that grinding noise once as it "tries" to engage.

So I had the exact same noise. Followed the video. But had black residue instead of white. So my problem was the pulley wheel instead of clutch. Easy replacement THANKS‼️

Got the new parts replaced and it fixed it! Thanks for the video! Only thing was that one mine, the pulley nuts were 9/16 instead of 3/8.
I think you've help me figure out what's wrong with our machine. Thank you in advance! 😎
You're welcome!
so glad i found you and this video, who did you get the parts from?
Good idea to replace pulley while at it. I still had some noise until I replaced mine. I read someplace that the pulley can cause noise as the nut can work loose over time. Tightening it periodically may save some cash and labor in the future if the noise starts again.
Can you please provide the correct torque for the pulley nut sir?
Thank you so much for this video it's the exact issue I'm having with mine and it took forever to find this video but you are a life saver! Thank yoi
Having this same issue since replacing the parts.
That would be a good idea of a video! Thank you
Changing mine this afternoon, except for the spring, which hasn't arrived yet.
Best of luck!

I’m super impressed at how damn smart you are! I’m an accountant and people call me smart… but I’m blown away at how much you know about machines and t
How they work!
@@DuctTapeMechanic Thank you so much! I will definitely try it!
I watched your video very informative, I have replaced drain pumps on other washing machines, but I was a little intimidated with this newer model, but it seems pretty much the same which I was very thankful to see,

Going to call and see if under warranty and if not, now i know what to do. Thanks so much!

I hope that’s my problem. It’s definitely making the same sounds. Very noticeable at the beginning of the cycle and somewhere mid cycle.
I’ll order the parts and see if it resolves it. Thanks so much for the video.
Best of luck!
My washer used to at least finish the job
Now it doesn’t spin at all

Excellent video. Any idea on what causes this? My washer is only 3 years old.
Thank you! Perhaps it is just the use of cheap materials (the clutch is plastic)

I was wondering what type of Grease you used on the clutch and the pulley
I used "moly" grease
Would this also resolve the jet engine sound or is that the bearing replacement that’s needed?
If it sounds like a jet, then you will need to replace transmission (the bearings are sealed inside and cannot be accessed). Here is my video on how to do it:

You explain very well how to replace the clutch in a GE. However, my GE Space maker WSLP1100DWW is quite different; No idea how to replace it.
Followed your instructions step by step replaced the clutch and the shifter and on the wash cycle my washer is making grinding noise and I lift the lid and the water is sitting still. Have no idea what the problem is. The spin cycle works fine. Considering just buying a new.
Only other thing is replacing the transmission pulley...
