  • Learn the English vocabulary you need to follow along and join in the discussions about the US elections, with a quiz along the way.
    As well as the voting process, we'll explain:
    the race metaphor
    terms for the political parties
    blue red and purple states
    who can and can't vote
    some effects of COVID-19
    common collocations like hold an election and going to the polls
    the primaries
    words like platform, campaign, and polls
    mail-in, absentee and provisional ballots
    We’re expecting a lot of controversy the 2020 election, so we plan to go deeper in a future video and look at English vocabulary about some of the issues.

In my country, Argentina, we have people from Paraguay or Bolivia crossing our boundaries to vote for our candidates. People from one State enrolled to vote in the other state. Finally in the last two elections, people belonging to the parties were taking photos with the cellphones to have a better control.

    The only exception of the you-can-be-a-president-twice rule was (I'm not 100% sure) Roosevelt, yes? I think he was a president 4 times.

    • @lostwizard
      @lostwizard 3 года назад

      There wasn't originally a limit, actually. That was implemented later, possibly in response to Roosevelt. The limit is also not strictly "2 terms". It's a number of years greater than 8 but less than 12 (I can't remember what the actual number is). So someone who became president due to succession instead of a vote could potentially run for two full terms after serving out the remainder of a predecessor's term, depending how long that partial term was.

    • @candicehoneycutt4318
      @candicehoneycutt4318 3 года назад

      There wasn't an official limit, but it was tradition to only serve 2 terms, which is why no president prior to FDR went any further than that. It was a bit of a special circumstance during WWII and congress made that rule after he died. He was president for like four consecutive terms and died mid term during the last one, if I remember correctly.

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  3 года назад +5

      The replies below are mostly accurate. But let's be clear, it wasn't congress that reacted to Roosevelt's 4 terms, it was the result of a constitutional amendment. It happens this way: Congress must call a convention for proposing amendments upon application of the legislatures of two-thirds of the states (i.e., 34 of 50 states). So the states were the ones asking for the change. Amendments proposed by Congress or convention become valid only when ratified by the legislatures of, or conventions in, three-fourths of the states (i.e., 38 of 50 states). So the 22nd amendment to the US constitution formalized what, until Roosevelt, had been a tradition. William's comment below about succession is also important. For example, Lyndon Johnson, who as vice-president, succeeded John F. Kennedy following Kennedy's assassination, won his first term on his own in 1964 having served in the office since November 22, 1962. He could have also run in 1968 for his own second term in office. He chose, however, not to run. Here's the actual language of the amendment: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once,”

    Hi Vicki/Jay, I would like to ask a question please , What should be the right expression "The most senior Person" or "The Senior-most Person" ?

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  3 года назад

      That's a really good question, Ibrahim. You are referring to seniority rather than age. So, a person who has been employed in a company longer than someone else has more seniority. In that case, either of your examples works. However, if you are referring to age, then I think we are more likely to say, who is the oldest person rather than most senior person. Thanks for writing to us and thanks for watching our video.

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  3 года назад

      Hi Ibrahim. This is Vicki and I thought I might add to what Jay said here. As I understand it, in some cultures age is an important issue when it comes to turn-taking and deciding who should speak in what order. But in Anglo-cultures, it's not relevant.

    United States President is elected by the electoral college. 538 electoral votes are distributed between the 50 States and the DC. California having 55 electoral college votes is the largest state whereas Delaware, Vermont, Dakotas, Alaska, Wyoming, Montana and DC have 3 votes each which has the smallest number of electoral college votes.
    For winning the Presidential election the candidate must win the majority of votes in a state to win the state's electoral college votes. Every States except for Nebraska and Maine uses Winner takes all method. Maine and Nebraska gives their 2 electoral votes At-Large and their rest of the electoral votes by their congressional districts.

    Why did FDR hold office for more than 8 years?

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  3 года назад +2

      The constitutional amendment that now limits a person to eight years as president, was enacted after FDR's term in office. Until then it was customary for presidents to serve only 2 four year terms (8 years), but as the world plunged into a new World War, many people were afraid that changing presidents would be a mistake. Roosevelt won elections in 1932, 1936, 1940 and 1944. He died early in his fourth term. Harry Truman, his vice-president, then became the President of the United States.

      Actually, I think they do. And also learning English is great and someone's political views should not stop you at all!

      Avery Paul @ You’re right Paul.. I shouldn’t be like them. They boycott businesses and people because they don’t think like them. Now they are allowing their own cities to be burnt down pretending to be fighting for black people in America. African governments learned mafia rule from them, look at where they are today.

      That is not at all what I said. First, My name is not Paul. Don't use my words and turn them into something wrong, and what I didn't say. Also you have made me very upset!!! I would appreciate it if you would leave political views out of this and I will too. When have they even said once about anything that you just said. Where did you come to that conclusion?

      Avery Paul @ They used a video clip of Obama’s inauguration ceremony and the video was only made just recently. Is Obama the current president of the USA?
