The First Conditional in Action - English Grammar

  • The first conditional is a really useful English grammar structure for talking about future possibilities.
If you watch this video, you'll see lots of first conditional examples. Hey - we just used a first conditional there! It's such a useful structure!
First conditionals have two clauses: the condition and possible result. We'll show you how to form them, make negatives and questions, punctuate them and reverse the order. You'll learn about a common mistake and the different modal verbs you can use.
And very importantly, you'll see lots of examples of the first conditional in action in a funny spy story.
To learn about other English conditionals, check out this playlist: • English conditionals

I hope so, but what did you mean by "line" here?
I find this chunk "is more our line" quite tricky to understand.
Did you mean a direction or course of thought or action? Or that there's no difference between you and other English teachers?

Good evening Vicki and Jay ♥ I love Friday nights, when my mobile announces: Simple English Videos has uploaded a new video ^_^
I was looking forward to hearing more about the conditionals! ♥
And I can't wait for your videos about the second and third conditional, which I think are pretty hard to usw in everyday conversations, since it's not easy to keep the grammar in mind whle talking! But thanks to your creative ways to explain, it's so much easier to remember! ♥
And wooow! Jay Bond! Here is your very first fan! ♥ If you ever write novels over novels about Jay Bond and Miss Vicki, his witty right-hand, I'll definitely want to get hold of an autographed copy *____* Your story was simply aaawesome! 😍 😂
Enjoy your weekend you two ♥ Lovely greetings from Germany! ♥

Yes, the structure of the second and third conditionals can be tricky. In fact a lot of the time we only say half of these conditionals. They're my next writing job. :-) Have a great weekend!

They will help us , If we need for help .
He might come to the party , If I invite him .
When I cook , He likes my hand make.

Oh great job Tamana. Good for you.
      Here are some notes:
If it's sunny tomorrow, I'll go for shopping . PERFECT!
If she doesn't meet us in the park , we'll get angry. PERFECT!
When she comes to my house, I'll get happy. I'd probably say, If she comes to my house (or if she visits me) I'll be happy.
If my mother doesn't cook for lunch , i might go restaurant to eat . I'd probably say If my mother doesn't cook lunch , I might go out to eat.
When i study hard , my father gets happy . Excellent, but remember to capitalize the I.
If some guest come to my house, I won't go out , Some guests or a guest? Either would work, but you need to choose singular or plural.
They will help us , If we need for help . I'd probably say They will help us if we need it.
He might come to the party , If I invite him . PERFECT!
When I cook , He likes my hand make. I'd probably say If I cook, he likes my cooking.
The children don't play football , when it rains . PERFECT. You can use the comma here or not - it's your choice.
He drives fast , when roads are empty . Oh nearly. I'd probably say He drives fast when the roads are empty.
If I need money, my uncle won't give me . Nearly again - If I need money, my uncle won't give IT to me.
Good job! Keep up the good work!

  • @TheRealTricky

Walt Disney provided a very good joke about "if" and "when" in the movie Hercules. The villain Hades has two helpers named Pain and Panic, but they often mess up the tasks their master gives, and that leads to this discussion:
    - He'll be so angry when he finds out!
+ You mean IF he finds out!
    - "If"? "If" is good!
Now I learned programming languages even BEFORE my first English lesson, and thus the word "if" came to me even before I could properly speak English
10 INPUT "How old are you? ";A
20 IF A>120 THEN PRINT "I don't believe you" ELSE PRINT "So you are"; A; "years old? That's nice to know"
    30 END
This example in the BASIC language in the 1980s is one of those programming codes that gave me the basic idea. ;)
Now I've never really realized how the word "will" is used in this matter, but now that you put emphasis on it. I've been looking inside my own language (Dutch) and there it can be left out.
"Als het morgen regent, blijven we binnen". Literally and grammar be damned it means: If it tomorrow rains, stay we inside. Now in a proper word order that would be: If it rains tomorrow, we stay inside, and I guess to make the sentence entirely correct: If it rains tomorrow, we'll stay inside. Funny how much I see about Dutch by watching a video about English. After all rain tomorrow is not really a certainty, eh? (The verb "will" does have an equivalent in Dutch, the verb "zullen". I know that French has no verb "will" but they use a future form on the verb. "Je suis" (I am) and "Je serai" (I will be). One of the few things I remember from French lessons.
When I watch more of your videos I may realize more about English and maybe even Dutch, and that could come in handy ( 11:10 :-P )
And I really don't remember what you told here from my English lessons at school. Although I must confess that is about 25 years or so now, as I am 43 years old (that is on the moment I made this post, folks). Still I would say that his is an important thing about the English grammar considering the difference I showed above with my own native language. But then again, now that I also remember I heard my English teacher yell "Het enige Engelse woord dat jij goed uitspreekt is 'OKAY'!!!" (The only English word you pronounce correctly is "OKAY"!!!) to one of my classmates, I realize we may just have been held up :P

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  5 лет назад

Thanks so much for sharing this TheRealTricky. It's so interesting when we take a step back and view our language from a different stance. I love learning how ideas would be expressed in other languages like 'If it tomorrow rains, stay we inside.'
The 'using the present tense to express a future idea" is a key point in English grammar that pops up all over the place. Strictly speaking, we only have two tenses in English. The present and the past. The future is expressed with modal verbs or verbs that convey a future idea (hope, want, wish, bound to, look forward to etc) or phrases like going to. Maybe we should make a video about that.

    • @TheRealTricky
      @TheRealTricky 5 лет назад +1

@@SimpleEnglishVideos When when it comes to only having present and past, I guess Dutch is much the same as English. I guess we Dutch are just eager to leave words out when we feel they are unneeded. Like in the sentence I demonstrated above where "will" would be needed in English, but as "morgen"(tomorrow) already denotes the future that verb is unneeded and thus left out. And yeah, the word order in Dutch is awkward, eh? I've been helping some Syrian refugees with their Dutch, and the word order of Dutch really "struck" them, I can tell ya.
