The second conditional in action - English grammar
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 7 авг 2024
- We use the English second conditional to talk about imaginary, hypothetical or unreal possibilities.
In this video we’ll show you how to form the second conditional and when to use it. We look at:
First vs second conditional
First and second conditionals are similar because they’re both about present and future possibilities. The difference is the second conditional is more imaginary. We use it to talk about very unlikely or unreal possibilities.
Second conditional examples
You'll learn how to use the second conditional in conversation with a funny story. We'll show you lots of examples in action in a story.

@@akoska When we talk about someone whose gender we don't know, we use "them" if I see a jacket in a party I'd say" who left their jacket here?" 😊
Not trying to be a know-it-all just though it's nice when we think or say something that's not grammatically correct is better to correct it, sorry if it sounded uptight , rude or something like that, that wasn't what I was trying to do. 😅
@@ricardosanchez1276 Thank you. Didn't know about that

That's great to hear zeze. So glad it was useful. Thanks for writing.
Thank you so much for the conditional videos , I had a test and it saved me, seriously. Thank you so much!
By the way I was talking to a friend and I wanted to tell him about how I was working as a particular teacher and I said
" I'm being a particular teacher to my mom's friend's kid " is it ok to say " to a friend of my mom's kid"? or are they both wrong ? Sometimes I lose sense in a sentence about that if the sentence it's too long
Karen, we are so pleased our videos helped with your exam. As for the phrases, they are both grammatically correct but they different meanings. "...my mom's friend's kid" is clearly the child of your mother's friend. But "...a friend of my mom's kid" actually means a friend of your mother's child, i.e, a friend of your brother or sister. :-) I hope that helps. But what is not clear to us is what you mean by "particular teacher." Perhaps you are teaching a student privately. We would often call that a tutor. Let us know if that's correct. Thanks for writing to us and thanks so much for watching our video.
Just found out today about your channel! Its really charming and helpful :)
Hi Dav and welcome to our channel. We're so glad you've found us and hope you have lots of fun exploring our videos.

Hello fukkumi and welcome to our channel. We're so glad you like our videos and greetings to you in Japan. :-)
Excellent,!
Thanks so much Claudia. So glad you like it. :-)
thank you very much for this useful video. I've read a lot of tutorials about conditional phrases, but none of them wasn't helpful like your video. If I spoke English fluently as you spoke, that would be great:)
Hi Shiva. We're so glad you found it useful and thanks so much for writing! :-) And now a note about your conditional. You've used a second conditional here - If + past, would + present - and it was the correct conditional to use in this context. I'd just remove one word and it'll be perfect: If I spoke English fluently as you, that would be great.
Great video! I love your videos they're very funny! 😊 My English is improving by your videos. Make more of them!
That's great to hear. Keep up the good work Mati Mati. :-)

Hi Vicki and Jay! At last you have made 2 conditional video, so grateful for the one👍 l was waiting for it😇 thanks a lot😊 The main question for me was - was/were during the exam, now everything is clear 🎈🎈🎈
So glad you liked it Natalia and good luck with your exam. :-)
Thank you so much
You're very welcome, Taher. :-)
So funny =))) i love it
Great! I'd love you to prepare a video with as many as possible everyday examples (questions and negatives too) to be able to practice pronunciation and intonation of these long sentences? Thanks in advance! That would be awsome because I have not found any yet.
Great suggestion!
Thanks for the great video, I have something to ask.
1. This sentence "If I could fly like a bird, I would start from my back yard and travel through town" is the second conditional, right? But I see both "could" and "would" here.
2. "If you've enjoyed this video, please share it with a friend? " is the conditional sentence?
I love it! 🇨🇭🇨🇭🇨🇭
We're so glad you enjoyed it Marie-Danielle. Thanks for letting us know and thanks for watching.
Could you please give me an example in which we use can in result clause of the second coditional. Thanks so much
Hi Tuan. If it's a second conditional, we'd use 'could' rather than 'can' in the second conditional. eg. If it stopped raining (which I don't think is likely) we could have a picnic.
i'm looking forward for third conditionals!
That's great to hear. Thanks Sophie.
Maybe next reported speech? Its really hard to me actually :D
Hi Velpy. Thanks for this suggestion. :-)
You should make more videos about grammar.
Hi Nikolai. Thanks for this suggestion. Very helpful. :-)
Love youuuur videos💓
That's great to hear. Thanks moneborba. :-)
Thank you Sir!
Condn: IF + PAST ; Result : Would + BASE Form of the Verb
First conditional = Possibilities; Second Conditional - Hypothetical possibilities
If i Fired Jay, I could get someone else
If I asked you to pick up my clothes from the dry cleaners, Would you complain?
If you brought them to the office, they would need walking
If I asked you to do my homework, would you help me?
If you needed a cup of tea, I guess I could make one for you
If you were me, who would you choose?
If I were you, I would watch all our videos

Dear mrs Vicky and mr J! I've a bad news! Unfortunately i'm beginning to forgot my engéish! So i need to fresh please! So, when i saw your chanel, i have decided, that i will subscribe to your channel!
Hi Akos! It's great that you're with us and we hope to help you dust down your English and get it up to speed again. Thanks for supporting our channel.
Simple English Videos Immagine please! I have gold and bad newses too! But now, i must to tell the good news, because the bad news grows from the goodxone. So da good news: On last week, i dont know that did i mention to you, so i had a timepoint for a medical exam in Szeged, because of my illnes, controlling my conditions in general, and shit documents. I just departed 2 Szeged by our car.... Unfortunately after about 40 or 50 kilometres, the car became slowly and slowly please. And than the car was stopped! My older bro needed 2 come to us by his car. Unfortunately he needed 2 pull our car thriuough 50 km please. Even though, i have urinary problem too! So let's jump! On this tuesday i could already go 2 Szeged to the examine there, in a clinic! Unfortunately da truth is when people, mostly children because it is a clinic 4 children pleaae! So i went there. U have to know that the average time to waiting 4 examimes a lot of time, about 3 or 4 hours! I had a negative, wrong record time but luckily i had a positive, very good record time now! With waiting for tge consultation or meeting the doctor, the consultation itself and the exine together it was only 2 hours please! The bad news: The doctor said to us that it is not sure that i have the "original" illness. It's called Leigh syndrome. But he said it's not sure unfortunately! If he was or is right, maybe, i must 2 go to Budapest! I dont wanna go there! Y? First i don wanna lie in a hospital bed! Mainly, so far from my parents! The other: The heallhcare in Hungary is a couplecof shit! Da conditumions are tragically! N they, my parents dont let me to travel by train, metro and tram. I dont know why! I think, public transport is safety n healthy! More healthy then car! So i hope WE ARE right, not the doctor! He said that they must 2 examine 5000 genoms!
Oh Akos, so sorry to hear this but it's good you're getting treated and they are testing to see what it is. Sending good wishes from Philly and hope you get well soon.

Hi Jianing, Vicki here. Yes, they are wonderful. I met them at an improv comedy class and they were kind enough to agree to make this video with us. They have offered to come back and make another too! :-)
I thought you should have stuck to Jay. He's the best you can get. 💝
Ha! Hi Ra'ed. Yes, I'm lucky that Jay will put up with me. :-)
👍👍👍
:-)
Do I think right? "Could" can mean past tense of "can" or "can" and "would" together.
Possibly. I think I'd need more example to see Szymon. The thing is we have two different meanings going on here. The past tense of can is could and could can also express the idea of future possibility.
If I were you, I wouldn't fire Jay. He's a nice guy
Ha! Great example Eddie. :-)
Thanks for the smiles 😅
Our pleasure Simone. :-)

Vicky if you connected the phone to the cable while you were calling , it would be more real 😉😆
Ah dear, you caught is there Basim. :-)
Hello Vicki, I can't recall wheter you already talked about this or not, but how do you differenciate 'Ion cannon' from 'Iron cannon' in british english? (spoken)
Hi Patricio. What fun phrases! I'd pronounce them both in the same way in my British English. :-)
@@SimpleEnglishVideos so the only difference is how modern is the army 🤣
Hello Vicki.Malaysian here:) I need some clarification.8:02 Is 'would' really can be replaced with 'should'?I've been taught to avoid using 'should' in consequence clause. However we can replace 'If' with 'should' completely in 'if' clause. Arghhh..this conditional really baffling!
Hi Zakira. 'Should' and 'would' would have different meanings in the consequence clause, but yes, should is also possible. It implies that something would be the right or correct thing to do. Eg 'If you see a suspicious bag, you should contact the airport authorities.' Or 'If the dial goes into the red, you should disconnect the electrical power'. And yes, we can replace if with should as well. 'Should you see a suspicious bag, you should contact the airport authorities.' It's rather formal and less frequent, but if can replace should like this. Hope this helps and keep up the good work!
@@SimpleEnglishVideos I got it.So we are talking about '0 conditional' here which means we can fabricate our own sentences without following standard rules in a another conditionals. Not a real conditional. It's more about reflection of what we've said in 'if' clause. Is it true?So can we use 'need' 'have' 'must' depending on what we want to say in 'if' clause?Eg 'If you see a suspicious bag,you have to contact the airport authorities'.sound forceful or weird in your hearing?
Nice

Hello. Could you please explain me why in the video about British expressions Americans don’t use you said: “They’re a plonker”. Why did you use the word “a” in plural?
Sometimes in casual speech you can use "they" as a third-person singular gender neutral pronoun, like for people whose gender is unknown. This might have been the reason for that.
Kayla, thank you so much for chipping in and helping here. Much appreciated.
Hi Oleg. Great question! Sorry to be replying late, but it seems Kayla has already chipped in and answered your question for us!
Thank you

I have = I've
craigistheman101 but will not is wont? how?
Yes, the contraction for will not is won't, BK. Sometimes English isn't very logical.
