Guys ...you are wonderful ! So supportive for my english and your videos are the funniest on you tube...
Such a lovely english speaking couple.
Thanks so much NumbLeaf. :-)
My native tongue is Portuguese and we Portuguese speakers have a peculiar way to be grateful to people. We say "obrigado/obrigada". That means that, when someone does us a favor, we feel 'obliged' to him/her. That sounds unique among languages. By the way, the Japanese word for thanking (arigato) is said to derive from the Portuguese "obrigado".
Oh this is really interesting Claudio. So the idea here is repaying. When I lived in Japan I'd say arigato all the time and it helped me to remember how to say obrigado/a when I visited to Brazil. Now I know why! Thank you!
Simple English Videos how lovely.
Some people say in English "much obliged" but it's old fashioned as I know.
They do Omar! You'll see it in old movies, but yes, as you say, it sounds rather old fashioned now.

I'm a native English speaker, but I was co-raised in Italian. In Italy, they say "grazie," which means 'graces' and is the equivalent to just thanks, and "grazie mille," meaning 'a thousand graces' and is the equivalent to thank you very much. We also say "grazie tante" (many graces, many thanks) and "grazie infinite" (infinite graces, infinite thanks). Even though I speak English fluently, I find your videos interesting. Love from New York!
Hi Niccola. Great to meet you. Thanks for writing and sharing this.

We're delighted you have found us too Maximo and greetings to you in Uruguay.
Thank you so much! You are the best... love you both ! 🤗
You're so welcome Italiana Toli. :-)
You both have taught me to be careful with my expressions. I am a native U.S. English speaker, but from the comments, I have learned much. In the U.S., one can never be 'too appreciative or grateful'...but it can be considered a bit rude in other cultures!
Hello disoriented1. Vicki here and thanks so much for writing. When I moved to the US, one of the things I had to start doing more was saying 'thank you'. Actually it's a bit more complicated than that because we use thank you a lot as a discourse marker in British English to move from one topic to another, but we use it less to signal gratitude. I think it's related to the different styles of politeness in the UK and US and here's a link to a video about that that you might enjoy: ruclips.net/video/tikE-saHWcI/видео.html
@@SimpleEnglishVideos..Much gratitude, Vicki!...so kind of you to respond to me!!! :P
Greetings from the Czech republic. In my country we say thanks /díky/ it's pronounced /deeki/ Sometimes we are lazy and we say only /dík/ it's pronounced /deek/ But in public we say /děkuji/ it's pronounced /djekuji/our language is complicated and very difficult for Americans. Thank you for this. It's helped me. I give like. 👍🏻😁
So glad it was useful! Thanks so much for writing.
Your videos is very helping me to learn different English

I'm a new subscriber from France and I just want to say THANK YOU. I've finally found THE CHANNEL which helps me to improve my English skills.
In French we say "merci" for thank you. But we exaggerate only when we know well our interlocutor, for example "merci tu es le meilleur" (thanks you're the best).
I wish you an happy New Year!
Luana 🇫🇷
Hello Luana and welcome to our channel. We're so glad the videos are helping. Glad to have you with us and happy new year to you too! :-)

Oh, Chloe. What a nice thing to say. Thank you so much and thank you for watching our videos.
Hi and thanks a lot for your wonderful work!
The two most common words we use when we thank people in Russian are "Spasibo", which is a contraction of "God save you", and "Blagodaryu", literally "I bless you". Of course, no one is any longer aware of the ethimology of these words. We use exaggerations, too.
Hi Marina. This is Jay writing back to you. I knew about "Spasibo" but was unware of "Blagodaryu" Thanks for sharing that and thank you so much for watching our videos.
You two are superheroes! And we use to exaggerate, when we say thank you, here in Brazil too!
Hi Wesley. This is Jay responding to your comment. Yes, superheroes is indeed an exaggeration, but we really do try to do our best. We're glad you liked the video and thank you for watching.

Hi Ahmed. Greetings to you in Egypt and keep up the good work. Thanks for writing.
Thank you for those interesting and super positive videos! You're awesome!
And by the way we also exaggerate in Ukraine when we say something like "You're my hero", "You're my life saver". Those are quite common. Other phrases are also common here. However, we don't use phrase "You're a star".
Thanks so much Oleg. It's great to learn about how phrases like these work in translation. Some work, some don't. Thanks for sharing.
You both really are the best!

@@SimpleEnglishVideos no problem...thanks
I just stumbled across your videos and, despite being a native Briton, am absolutely loving them! I'm even learning so new things. I've spent a fair bit of time in the US, mostly in Atlanta, GA and found a curious difference to the way I thank someone and how the locals did so. Firstly, that Americans tend emphasise their thanks more the the British e.g. "Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!" where I would have found myself simply saying, "Thank you" at something fairly trivial. Also, that many times rather than saying, "You're welcome" the folk in Georgia would simply say "Mmmhmm" in what felt like a a somewhat aloof manner. In time I realised that this was the typical (and meaningful) response having thought I was doing something to offend these guys! I wonder if you've encountered similar and whether this might be a more localised thing?
Great to meet you noodle. :-) Vicki here. I too was struck by differences in how thank you was used when I first came here. Sometimes the sincerity of the tone made it sound almost false to my British ear. Folks weren't being sarcastic, but that's how it might have come across in the UK where a more simple 'thanks' would have sufficed. I think that Mmmhmm acknowledgment might be more of a southern thing, but I've certainly come across it here too. I also found myself needing to say thank you more often here, reasoning that my simple 'thanks' wasn't going to cut it. But in fact linguists have found we use 'thanks' more frequently in British English. The difference is we'll use it as discourse marker rather than a token of appreciation. So we'll mark the end of a segment of conversation with a thanks. You might enjoy this TED talk by Lynne Murphy where she goes into it at the end. ruclips.net/video/Jbu-eMcEF3s/видео.html
