  • ‘Of course’ is such useful English phrase, but be careful. If you use it wrongly people might think you’re angry when you’re not, or they might think that you think they’re stupid. In this video you'll learn how to use it correctly.

    I often hear “of course” used in a very rude condescending manner, makes me cringe! Even if used correctly, the said tone puts “of course” in my rude category. I googled it to make sure that I wasn’t being critical. Thank you for this excellent explanation.

    In the country I live in we often use “Sure” than “of course” like “ Yeah, sure.” Or “Sure. Why not?”. “Of course” isn’t used a lot unless we r being sarcastic or telling them the obvious which is a negative impression.

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  3 года назад

      Often, the level of politeness depends on the context and the tone of the speaker. So listening is an important part of understanding whether the speaker is being rude or not.

  • @chrisweaverhaido2
    @chrisweaverhaido2 3 года назад +1

    There is another way that "of course" can be rude, as in: "I am going to take another brake" - "Of course...!!" This denotes typical behaviour.

    Is it impolite/rude to ask "what are you talking about?" - I feel like it is, but I've read it many times. How can you semi formally ask if you have absolutely no clue what the other person means? It's a little awkward to say "sorry, what do you mean?" esp. on the phone. "Say again" might sound like you didn't get it acoustically. Great videos btw. ❤️

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  5 лет назад +2

      Hi MichaelRyanMichael. Great question! 'What are you talking about?' can be used in different contexts, and in some it could be rude. For example, if someone arrives late for a meeting and wants to know what topic everyone is on it could just mean I'd like to know what you're talking about. But we also use it when we think someone is talking nonsense and then it means I think what you're saying is rubbish. We have made a video with some different phrases for checking understanding that you can see here. ruclips.net/video/Tw5bSwOv9DU/видео.html that you might like.

    • @artsysundae
      @artsysundae 5 лет назад

      I think “sorry, what do you mean?” is a good one! if someone is talking to you and you don’t understand what they mean, that’s a good way to ask them without being rude. it’s not too awkward in my opinion.

      Hi Pedro. Vicki here. Sure has several uses. Here are some common ones. Sure can mean that we're confident that what we're saying is true, for example, 'Are you sure? = Are you certain? And we can also use it to say that something is certain to happen. 'The party is sure to be a success'. And if you want to show that you are happy to meet someone's request you can say 'sure'. Can you post this letter for me?' 'Sure'. Hope this helps.

      @@SimpleEnglishVideos Thanks for replying back!!! That was a big surprise for me to hear from you!!! Im really glad by it. I never went to an english course before.. I was taught by an english teacher when I was a kid, she's a church member volunteer formely, I mean, she is from British and church I used to make part of, our church had a relationship with an english batpist church, in england, too. We had hosted her, and she'd stayed with us for many years, thats why Ive learnt english only by listening to it. Even so, as English isnt my 1st language, I naturally have some doubts.
      I understood quite well what you meant, about "sure", thats why I make use of ir exacly how u had explained about it.. but, sometime "SURE" has the same meaning like "of course"... then, it maybe a bit confusing!
      Thanks for replying me back!!! I do watch most of ur vides.. they're funny, as well. I think it should have more kids or teen on its broadcasting, it's nice to know how english teenages talks to.
      Please come to Brasil!!!!!!

    Is “of course” appropriate as a response to being thanked for something? Example: A friend thanks you for your help and you respond “Of course” ?

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  4 года назад

      Hi Luna. Great question! No, it would be appropriate as a response to a request. e.g. Can you help? Of course.

    Ah, I should watch this video several months earlier. When I moved the the current house, I've said bunches of "of course" to my host! I should apologize to her tomorrow... And hope her give me "the benefit of the doubt".

      Just letting you know to help you with your English, but you would say “And I hope she give me the benefit of the doubt.” Not her. :) Cheers!

    1:58 I was wondering if "of course" doesn't sound sarcastic in this situation? Especially with that falling intonation?

    • @mohammedyakub3760
      @mohammedyakub3760 4 года назад

      Yes, if she said it in a different tone, it could be used to show she is frustrated and annoyed that he lost a customer and is being sarcastic.

    I don't get why the answer is "Yes, of course" and not "Yes, please" since you said that saying of course is like saying, you suppose to know already, it is obvious.

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  4 года назад

      Hi Ted. This is Vicki. If you're responding to an offer, the answer would be 'yes please'. If you're responding to a request, the answer would be 'yes of course'. Hope this helps. :-)

    What does it mean when somebody says course. "Call me when youre done." They say "Course" im confused.

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  3 года назад +1

      What they are actually saying 'Dance in the Moonlight' is "Of course." It means "Certainly" or "OK" or "Yes, I will". But as is so often the case with native speakers, words are spoken quickly so you might not hear the 'of' part of the phrase. Thanks for writing to us and thanks for watching our video.

    @simple English videos isn’t the customer example sarcastic?

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Arjit. Do you mean the example where Jay told me we'd lots a customer? I was trying to be sympathetic and sincere there, and so not sarcastic. ( Maybe it was my bad acting!) We sometimes use 'of course' to agree with people, meaning 'of course/obviously you're right' when we want to be sympathetic.

    • @arjitmenon544
      @arjitmenon544 5 лет назад +1

      Simple English Videos yes I was referring to the very same example. What I was pointing out was that when Mr Jay said “I did everything I could” , Ms.vickie ( I apologise for the incorrect spelling) said “ of course you did” wasn’t that a tad rude?

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Arjit. No offence taken at all. :-). And no, using 'of course' in that situation would be polite and express empathy. Intonation would be important, because if you don't sound sincere it could sound sarcastic, but normally it would be very appropriate.

      Simple English Videos thank you for the clarification. On a side could you make a video on the words to use to sound more formal?

  • @Owlandpie
    @Owlandpie 5 лет назад +2

    I think the bottom line is that every seemingly nice phrase and expression can become rude and offensive if used sarcastically.

    Hahaha I'm kidding of course.
    Your videos are so entertaining and engaging that they make me forgetting for a moment all the bad things are happening around the world

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  6 лет назад +3

      Yeah Illogic Math, there's so much bad stuff going on around the world at the moment. It's so depressing. Jay and I made a conscious decision a while ago that there was so much bad stuff happening that we had no control over and we should try to focus on stuff that might help and brighten the world, even if we could only do it in a limited way. It's great to hear the videos brighten your world, because making them has brightened ours as well.
