Inside the opioid industry’s marketing machine

  • Beginning in the mid-1990s, Purdue Pharma helped change the culture of prescribing opioids through an extensive marketing campaign that persuaded the medical community that addiction was rare and patients were suffering needlessly, according to recently unsealed corporate documents and plaintiffs attorneys suing two dozen drug companies in a landmark federal case in Cleveland. In 2007, the federal government came down hard on Purdue, fining the drugmaker and three of its executives a record $634 million for misbranding its blockbuster OxyContin pill as safer and less addictive than other painkillers. But the attorneys argue that other drug manufacturers continued the aggressive marketing even after the Purdue fine, leading to a surge in opioid overdoses. Read more: wapo.st/2LqS2OY. It's not only Barr but it's the Trump's that pushed the CDC guidelines of 2016 that effected 52% of all Americans in regards to these issues. Even Military vets who recieved lifelong injuries, people hurt in vehicle accidents recieving the same and cancer patients are amongst many of those impacted and the Trump's taken pride in these 2016 guidelines that they enforced bringing it into law.

@Michael Shapiro ... After what you put as your medical condition, I honestly don't see why you would not be issued nearly any type of Opiode even with the CDC guidelines. Maybe you are issued something, I don't know but maybe it's not strong enough to deal with what you listed. The CDC guidelines has effected some that truly needs these meds. I don't know your full details but there is no reason why you should not get nearly anything out there available on the medical market today.

I understand why the CDC guidelines were made but the Government is handling the situation wrong. There is victims stemming from all this that are legitimate like war vets injured with lifetime injuries, car accident patients with lifetime injuries and cancer patients. Unfortunately there is many fake patients who are standing by those who those legitimately who need them as well. There is legitimate pain clinics around but unfortunately there was in the past pill mills who served anyone and everyone who both needed these meds and those who were seeking meds for the high. But the Government has effected 52% of all issued these meds in the past both legitimate and non legitimate. It has increased major suicide rates and in addition had turn people to buy illegal narcotics on the street including fatal narcotics such as those with 3 or more specs of street fentanyl or carfentanyl that is lethal to the average human.
Here is what I think the Government should do and yes I brought it up to even my pain management doctor and he agreed with me.
Doctors have to donate a certain number of hours a month or year. If each city appointed a 3 doctor panel every shift in which there is is enough doctors to review all past patients while keeping up with the new patients that come in requesting with reviewing all patients medical history which may take 15 to 20 minutes together on a 3 doctor panel to have a vote where the majority is either approved or not for the meds, then a majority of those who actually need these meds will still get them and those that the 3 doctors don't approve gets cut. This would not cost the Government anything with the doctors being required to donate this time anyhow but it will take a couple years. As a result, there would be less suicides and benefit those that truly need them. Then the issuing doctors of these meds can give the 3 and 7 days scripts the CDC guidelines allow which the issuing doctors can do fast pill counts and monitor any if any abuse going on fast and accurate.
What the 3 and 7 days scripts would guarantee less of these meds getting to the wrong hands as well. But there is legitimate pain clinics out there as I am with one and have been but before the CDC guidelines, it was hard to get approved to get in one and with the CDC guidelines, unfortunately it is even harder to get in one today, it sucks. Unfortunately my own mother who is in her mid 70's was cut and she has a broken hip and it saddens me. She was on the same thing I was so yeah I am sorry, She is more important than my own life so I help her. But if the Government can do this to the elderly, they will do this to anyone. Melanie Trump through this all forced the CDC guidelines with Donald's help so of course I do not respect them and yet I am a 14 year republican that changed my support over to republican canidate Mr. Bill Weld.

No I am not a doctor, I made suggestions based on my own family even being cut. I brought up the idea to a few others who agreed. It is only ignorant people like you who don't seem to want medical professionals to evaluate who needs and who does not need. I was a pharmacy technician for seven years, and the problem with oxy abuse was super obvious by 1999. I'd see the addicts come into my store and beg and break laws to get ahold of pills that were clearly ruining them. When patients were clearly terminal cancer patients, that's one thing, but people were getting rx's for oxy/vicodin/percocet for just a backache, and getting them for months. Shame on the doctors for falling for this marketing, but even if they did, they should've learned that non-addiction was a con-job after just a few months of administering the drugs to patients.
Shame on the pharma companies for doing this horrible marketing too. And sure, let's sue/fine them to get funding to solve this. But this is a systemic problem, and it must be addressed as the pandemic disease that it is, and never make this foolish mistake again. It's potentially going to take much more money than even these companies have to fix this.
