One of the most underrated rock bands of the '70's. To hear their fabulous, multi-talented lead singer, Mark Farner, review their song Inside Looking Out. Absolute Best!
Absolutely...I have there vinyl at my house....
The era when music *was* music :)
Absolutely correct
So true, just pure talent where the live concerts sounded even better than the records.
We had the best music in the 70’s!
‘American Band’ brings back some memories!
LOL love your moniker. I am the wife of a grumpy middle aged Marine.
This song was released in 1973...hard rock. Disco wasn't even on the horizon. Most of their songs were done by Mark Farner, the guy on the paint horse. He definitely was channeling the wild west, native American look. Great band in its day.
Dad did 3 years in Germany. We came home and this was rocking on the radio!
Led Zeppelin invited Grand Funk to be their opening Act in their 1970 North American Tour, and when they Played in Detroit Michigan the Audience went crazy of Grand Funk and Led Zeppelin were afraid to go on after them, so Peter Grant LZ manager told GFR Manger Terry Knight to take his band off the stage, and in the middle of GFR set The Power Went out and Terry came out on stage and said the concert was over and People Rioted and GFR were Kicked Off the LZ tour and GFR Bassist said, "Yup, We Just Blow Led Zeppelin Off The Stage"
You probably know this, but Grand Funk Railroad was a Michigan-based Rock band. Playing in Detroit was like a "homecoming" concert for them. Naturally, the Michigan fans were going to cheer on GFR really hard.
@@LaptopLarry330 yes they are from Flint, I saw this story of Led Zeppelin on a show on VH1 called "Behind The Music" about GFR, after watching this show and seeing all the BS they went through with their Manager Terry Knight it made me Love GFR even more
In the first lines when they said Sweet Sweet Connie, they line referred to "Sweet" Connie Hamzy Parente" she was a groopie in the 60's 70's and 80's and is famous for her "Down on her knees talent" with many many bands and musicians.
She must’ve ended up with HPV and throat cancer.
Love Grand Funk! Hearing this transports me back to that time - young and having fun!
My aunt saw them in concert back in the 70's, she said it was one of the loudest concerts ever. Grand Funk had big walls of speakers.
PS - first!
She's right. Seen them many times. They always put out 100% effort. Fantastic concerts!
Good, pure Rock and Roll. God the 70's were fun.
Grand Funk Railroad is from Flint Michigan! The keyboard player is a friend of ours who left GFR when they broke up and joined Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band (Craig Frost) …
Don Brewer is Bob Seger's Drummer ! Has been all along , He plays the drums on " Old time rock and roll .
And Don still toured with Bob until just recently when Bob retired. They are both from Michigan.
OMG those "tight vests with their arms showing" are also known as WIFE BEATER shirts....and in some circles, Muscle shirt. I love your reaction to seeing some of the best bands that have ever rocked the house. Loved it!!!!!
Old school. My times. I was probably the last person in the world to give up my bell bottom jeans.
Me too. I had long hair till 1986'
I wore mine until one day in ‘80 in high school, my nuts got bonded up when sitting down and I had to get up (quickly) readjust without using hands😂
Grand funk railroad is from Flint, Michigan. I am born and raised in Michigan. My dad and brothers listened to them and still do.
I'm so glad you played this special promo version. It was actually produced by *Todd Rungrend* himself. They all hail from Flint, Michigan (where I live). Their name comes from the *Grand Trunk Railroad* which was a massively well paid job to get. Nepotism ruled.
It was a freight train and went to Canada from a tunnel under the St. Clair River. It's the kind of job where you'd retire with a gold watch and a hefty pension.
As you can see they started as what is called a *garage band* . :P
Thanks for the shout to Todd Rungrend-genius!😊 6:13
This is most definitely my new favorite RUclips channel.
Thank you very much Bill
Love the memories, iron horse, my sassy blue, uncles chop shop. My pretty baby Stella... Jet black stallion, listening to radio full blast in the mountains of north Western Washington. I was just a pup. But I loved the music. I think my fav was "Some Kind Of Wonderful" GFR amazing old school. 🎼🇺🇸💞🙏
Can't forget "Loco Motion" now you've had to hear GFR! 😘
Mark Farner is Indian. Hence the armband, horse and God knows we women loved that man shirtless! They were great in concert! Underrated band! Check out Inside Looking Out from 1969.
So many memories from the 70's!! Best music came out in the 70's!! Love this song, thank you..
One of the best videos ever made...such unbridled "Americanism" that is getting more rare. Unabashed freedom (musically and otherwise) Farm Day: shooting hoops in the barn, fishing, riding motorcycles, shirtless on a horse. Man that was quintessential midwest America 50 yrs ago!
Outstanding! That's what the USA is all about. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Thanks for this review.
These guys are from my home town. My grandpa was friends with the drummer.
I was about 13 when this came out. Bought a 45rpm single of it. It was a bright translucent yellow! So exotic. Btw, the reference to "sweet, sweet Connie" was about a real, rather well-known groupie at the time.
Cool. Thank you very much. I love the old LP's
Years later, Connie was an elementary school teacher; and went on a talk show(Don't remember which one)
She talked about the years with the band. She lost her teaching job because of her past.
I don't know how it turned out, but such a shame for her to be punished in that way.
@@nestea8385 That is a shame. Thx for that interesting bit of rock&roll history.
I had that same translucent yellow 45. I wore that record out! My favorite band at the time.
MORE COWBELL!!!
Grand Funk Rail Road was a monster Rock band. In the post Beatles Era. This was one of the bands filling in the void. I don't know how big they were in the UK. They could fill a Staidum with people.
Rock on.
Too add a bit, from what I've heard from friends a bit older than I am, were one of the LOUDEST shows you could experience! I guess they really cranked it up! lol

@@bigsteve6200 I was 5 when this was performed! lol, just never got a chance to see them live, but of coarse I know that song, Most of my concert experiences were in the 80s, the first being Rick Derringer. Looks like this was a jammin' concert!
They did great covers of Loco motion and Some kind of wonderful.
Oh. The Old days. Before FB. Great fun!!!!
America had so many great r n r artists. Was 14 when this came out. Yeah, fros, bell bottoms, muscle cars n Harleys..great time to be young and frisky.

Loll! Love your channel! Informative , fun and loved the comment “only in America would you see guys flying through the fields on motorbikes “💕💕💕
Love Grand Funk Railroad grew up listening to them with my Dad and we are also located 94 Miles from Yukon Oklahoma :)
They are from Flint Michigan and one of many bands from southeastern Michigan and Detroit back in the 70's. Filmed on one their uncles farm somewhere in Michigan. Named after the grand trunk rail road in Michigan, they just changed trunk to funk.
My older sisters played Grand Funk Railroad every day and loved them. They have a song Inside looking out, Live version, which really showcases their talent. Thank you!
Not a famous American song but a totally American experience is
" Farmer Derek. Hay House."

50 years ago, this was the #1 single!
Grand Funk Railroad had their greatest heyday between the late-1960s to the mid-1970s. To me, this music video is the DEFINITIVE music video/promotional film of the 1970s, when it comes to non-Disco Rock music. Grand Funk Railroad also had another 1970s hit with their cover of the Little Eva song, "The Locomotion" (you might be familiar with Kylie Minogue's cover of the song early in her musical career).
This is a band from the 70's. I was very young when I used to hear it on the radio. Sometimes you hear it movies.
What a blast from the past...too funny!
One of the top 10 drum intros.
Carmine Appice was amazing and Bonzo loved him.
did just a touch of drinking in the 70s to songs like this. lol love it
The best rock band that never has been inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame, very under rated and unappreciated.. Actually the lead singer is Mark Farner on the lead guitar and wrote most the bands music. They had many hits, their biggest was probably I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home based on a true story. They sold out Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles to a larger crowd. They were originally a 3 piece ban outta of Flint Michigan.
An answer to the British bands of the time
I grew up with the band. They're from my hometown of Flint, Michigan. I went to school with Craig Frost's (keyboards) brothers, Scott and Jason. Scott was a badass keyboard player (RIP) with whom I played for several years. I was a pro for several years in part due to their influence on me as early as ten years old when I would watch them rehearsing in a neighbor's basement before they became famous.
A little trivia. The Beatles sold out Shea Stadium in six weeks. Grand Funk did it in 72 hours - a record to this day! GFR - THE American band...!
They were AWESOME in concert !!! I loved them then , I love them now !!! 💖 🎸 💖
Aaah, I loved the '70's. Great music, big hair and I was only a teenager. Good times!💋
I had a brother 10 years older than me and this video reminds me of him and the guys who used to hang out with and the kind of shit they used to do. I so looked up to them and wanted to be a part of that kind of fun but by the time I was their age the 80s had arrived and all that was long gone.
Great band and great times the 70s.
This was a hit on the U.K. Billboard charts. But, it was before you were born 1973.
Oh really. Thanks for that. I must ask my parents did they like it.
@@TheDonsChannel Your parents may be too young. Most people from that period are into their 60's & 70's. Would be fun to know if your parents have heard the song though. :)
My Mother told my brother when he was playing a early Grand Funk Railroad album she told him to not play that s**t on her stereo. It was The Red Album he was playing. This was in 1970!
@@dennisholiday1868 Yeah, that was the album before this one. Released in 1969. It had no title. We called it Grand Funk/Grand Funk
@@charleswillsonpeale5739 Yes Grand Funk was the name of the album but now it called by some as The Red Album. On Time was Grand Funk Railroad first album.
Great Band
Grand Funk is from Flint Michigan which is about 40-50 miles north of Detroit. There is a railroad that runs through michigan named the grand trunk which the band was named after but they changed trunk to funk. There is a grand trunk viaduct in Flint with the bands name painted on there that has been there since the 70's. I heard this was filmed on one of the band members uncles farm somewhere in michigan. This is kind of more like a home movie rather than a music video. They were part of a wave of southeastern michigan/Detroit rock back in the 70's which included Ted Nugent(the motor city madman), Alice Cooper, Bob Seger, and the MC-5. If Motown music was included the rock n roll hall of fame should have been in Detroit and not Cleveland.
American Band! Such a great song, such a great band!
Thats at Marks old place the singing spruce farm in Parshallville Mi...I had a cabin on that pond..These guys were a worldwide juggernaut back then
What they did with the equipment and sound they had was amazing. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame does not deserve them…..
very Very VERY *_VERY_* underappreciated band.
the video part reminds me of my brother and his friends almost identical in hair and just hanging around together back in the 70's. His hair was just as long and they were all over 6 ft , great memories thanks
To us, back then, this was the first Hard Rock Band in History.
Listening to this while stuck at home with wicked weather outside!! Hope you have better weather where you are.
Cheers from California, dude!
Grand Funk was big enough that I knew who they were when I was 4 or 5 years old (1973 or 1974) and I could sing along with some of their songs at that age.
Oh man, that brings back memories of my preteen years! Great under rated band from the 1970's.
Live” Heartbreaker”…period.
Thank you for this video, Sir!
Hey Don,🙋🏻♀️ Great song! Haven’t heard it in years thanks for the memories.
Now were talking!!!
Just subscribed to your channel to hear your accent.
Oh yes, GFR brings the heat!
I ve seen them in concert; AWSOME
Love your reactions! ♥️♥️
These guys were great
You never disappoint
WooHoo!! Love GFR.
This song (and band) are a huge part of the soundtrack of my childhood. I was 13 when it came out!
Ahhh memories.... great song
Mark, Don and Mel, and sometimes Craig Frost. Right on!
Hadn't heard this song in awhile!! Good one 👍
Stupendi anni 70 grande band
Isn't anyone gonna comment on Don's badass accent?
Back when bass was the BOMB!!!!!
LOVE this band! They're out of Flint, Michigan -- Tough blue collar town that's been hit hard by (among other things) GM closing it's plants for cheap labor elsewhere. Their name's a take off on Grand Trunk Railroad, a railway in MI that moved a lot of auto-related stuff around the state.
American Band not Bank
I'm amazed you never heard of Grand Funk Railroad. They were one of the biggest bands of the late 60's through the 70's worldwide. They have a whole catalog of chart busting records and all of them are incredibly good rock n roll!
Must be my accent as I think I said band 😂
RIP sweet Connie who is mentioned in here passed away late last year
There will never be 60s and 70s music again, how I miss those days.Music today sucks!!!!!!
I personally use Wells Fargo for my banking needs.
🤣
they are an american bank
I love these guys, but I couldn't help but notice that, to me, the drummer reminds me of Hugh Jackman with a Fro lol 😂 still love 'em both, but damn! 😂😂
There was so many great British bands out at that time that in America it was called the British invasion, but in a good way.
So this was GF way of answering that in saying, hey, we're here too and we're also pretty damn good.
No better time for music.
LoL 😆 you have a resemblance to the bass guitarist. But, yeah, loved this song when I was a kid. I was around 7 at the time. I was a music junkie. Hehehe 😜
Listen to a couple more of there tunes, the at least a couple of those guys have amazing voices. That was actually not even the lead singer, he’s awesome . Thank you for sharing this video. They were huge in the 70’s they had a contract dispute that cut there career short but I think they are back now
That is the link for John Wayne Hyphenated American

Mark Farner, (The Guitarist) looks a lot like a young David Gilmour.
Sweet Sweet Connie was doing her act...She was a big groupie in Little Rock Arkansas. She said the guys in the band were great! David Lee Roth from Van Halen not so much. 😂😂
Why would that not surprise me? lol.
