I think making the status LEDs RGB and having a software layer control them so all this stuff is possible is the obvious step forward that all switches should move to. Using them for decoration, meh, but I like the ability to jump in and make them display differently depending on what you need at the time.

I’m new to networking, but absolutely love this! I have an 8port Poe switch, simple to use. What I don’t get is what is that 24port switch with RGB eth ports connecting into ? (Above it..)
It’s like another switch,? Is that so it can redirect the cables out the back to the corresponding devices or something?

@@-someone-. The 24port switch in this video is a stand-in for a "patch panel" and is used for demonstration purposes only (just to make the ports work and show the RGB), it has no ports in the back.
A "patch panel" is a rack where all ethernet cables strung throughought the building are terminated, so each one of those ports would go to a wall port in some room somewhere. You use short patch cables to connect its ports to the switch ports for convenience.

You missed an important distinction; the Max Pro switches support Hi power POE, 802.3bt Type 4 which allows up to 100W per port. The rest of Unifi's switches with 802.3bt only support Type 3 power devices, which is limited to 60W per port

Side note: Patch cables with integrated LED to locate the other end exists since many years already. It quiet useful in the data center to find out where the cable goes. But until now, it was needed to plug an external power injector that the other end lights up, maybe Ubiquiti has a better idea to achieve this..

  • @Trains-With-Shane
    @Trains-With-Shane Год назад +14

I think the implementation is a little half baked in regards to the software. It is almost like their design people don't talk to actual end-users for input when designing this stuff. If it had the added features that you talked about such as being able to turn off the lights, turn them into status and link lights, show VLAN colors without having to have a cable plugged in, etc. Would make it more attractive to me. As far as the added 2.5gb and POE++. I think that's definitely worth the extra $100 if I were looking to spend $800 on a homelab switch.

Given they have the option to turn off the LED lights on their AP's i'm surprised they don't have the option for the switch. Some of the spaces where I work are studios so you need to be able to turn off lights if required.

The $100 extra isnt too much. Right. But the 699$ the "old" pro switch costs is way too much. You can get managed switches mit PoE++, 24 ports an two times the uplink ports for half the money from other vendors.

I am extremely disappointed that Unifi is developing new Layer 3 switches when they haven't finished implementing Layer 3 on their old ones. A lot of us Layer 3 pro switch owners are still waiting for ACL implementation on Layer 3 to restrict traffic between switch vlans, and are still stuck using a router on a stick configuration (routing and ACLs on the firewall/gatewaypro) because not having them renders all other aspects of the layer 3 switch practically unusable. They could have saved me the $400 dollars by suggesting I'd buy the non pro layer2 switch because that's the headline feature the pro marketed.

Unifi suff is so apple like, I both love it and hate. Its been very hard to not get sucked in right away as I've started home labbing lol. One thing holding me back is just little things like, why wouldn't allowing you to just turn any port any color you want at anytime be the first thing they put into the software. Regardless of whether its in use or anything else. Not giving me control over my own stuff feels like the bad part of apple. Anyways this switch is very cool and I am always impressed with their pricing and value. Making all of the ports inline for nicer patching is definitely a big win btw!

Hello. how are you? I have a question regarding this device versus a USG Pro 4. In the USG Pro 4, LAN ports 1 and 2 are independent ports, and I can configure an independent segment for each of them (each one on VLAN 1). Is this possible with this new line of devices? I purchased a UCG Ultra, and it cannot do this. The UniFiOS only allows creating VLANs, meaning it only has one network on VLAN 1 for the whole device. Which device would allow me to do everything I need? Thanks. Best regards.

The scope for using this to:
1, identify the correct port for the avoidance of doubt and eliminating errors when plugging things in.
2, identify trunks, certain vlans, etc... such as an important vlan or trunk always having a certain colour.
3, idenfity heavy traffic or network errors. Such as a port flashing red to show a lot of packet loss, or 100% utilisation.
TBH there seems to be enough potential that all switches should have RGB ports as the debugging, and diagnostic potential seems significant.

No one will open to closet and just sip their coffee while goobering over the LED's in an professional work place environment.

How on earth do I find a port? The combination of port manager and RGB LED on the switch ports may be useful for those who have poor vision or cannot count to 24 properly. Almost as good for them would be significantly larger and thus more readable numbering on the switch at no extra cost but I guess that's not a good business plan. Some kind of Christmas tree decoration is better in the market and RGB is trendy. Children will love it, adults and professionals in particular will rather find it disturbing.
And the port manager gives a good overview of the ports' ethernet speeds. The standard built-in port LEDs may suffice, but marketers are inventive.....
Still, it is a useful video for all those planning a thoughtful purchase of a Unifi switch. It it can prevent a mis-buy.

Honestly I've long felt that Ubiquity is the Apple of networking. Both in who their customer base is and well as them being the overpriced locked down ecosystem. I mean I think Ubiquity isn't as locked down, if there was a true Apple switch it would use a custom protocol that allows it to only be able to connect it to other Apple devices for sure. But it is somewhat and very ecosystem-y which I just hate.
I want good old fashioned networking equipment that does not require me to connect to the providers cloud. I want the Linux of networking, not the Apple of networking.

@@ryanb509 they are just centrally managed from a local device. You can self-host the Unify Network console on a PC/VM for free or buy one of their routers that offer that function as a "sheperd" for your other networking equipment. The cheapest one is the Unify Express, for 150$.
This is a far cry from the true "cloud managed" bulls.. like say Cisco Meraki

@@ryanb509 I get what you are saying, they are not the best choice if you just want to deploy a single switch, but in most prosumer and small businness environments you have multiple switches and a few APs and whatnot. The more devices you have the more having a unified control plane looks appealing.

@@marcogenovesi8570 There's a unified control plane" then there connect this to a cloud service so that we can control it and shut down your network if we want. It's bad for privacy, and its bad for longevity because who's to say in a year from now Ubiquity isn't going to come out with the next generation of their cloud service and it won;t support the older hardware which will become useless.
