    I own a 2005 Toyota SR5 V6 4wd with 237k miles , still running smooth. I sometimes do hear a swoosh in dash. I believe that’s coolant. But I’m going to keep running it . Great vehicle.

    • @salsarunner

      It might be air in your coolant? You might want to try bleeding it.. there are quite a few videos on how to do it. Pretty simple!

      @@jaybird4406 Definitely monitor your coolant level and any leaks. The early 4.0 V6s, especially those pre-06 (when the updated the head gasket design) are known to blow the head gaskets more than later years. Cold misfires (esp. on cylinders 5 or 6, IIRC?) and a whooshing/liquid sound under the dash are indicators.

    I've been looking for a place that offers "ECU tunes for the 4th Gen 4Runners with little success but I've just been in contact with a couple tuners. One in Nor Cal and one in Texas. On 4/26/2023 both shop owners said, 'I just check with Yotawerx and they are finalizing a tune for your 4runner... should be ready in a few weeks. WOOT WOOT!!!!!

      What do you mean flush? Drain and fill or full flush (using cooler line, etc)? Just curious. I've been thinking about switching to drain and fills (approx 3-4 qts) every so often (50k, like you do, sounds like a good interval) to make it easier.

    • @repairrestorerebuild9864
      @repairrestorerebuild9864 Год назад

      The flush machine requires 16 qts of fluid. If you go this route buy the Valvoline fluid with the specs for Toyotas at Walmart in the red jugs. Much cheaper this way.

      @jsusnbhdjnfj8692 Nope, 20 years as a master auto tech has proven otherwise. Why would you want to change only a small part of your Trans fluid? 459,000 miles and counting on my original transmission and the pan has never been off.

    Quick question: what type of ATF did you use and did you pour in the exact amount that drained out or did you fill until it came out of the overflow?
    Thanks!!

      Hey I’m sorry for such a late reply! I used Toyotas ATF fluid. The “world standard” or “WS” version. I used a graduated bucket to measure what came out and then put the same amount back in.

    Mine has been rumbling for a few months. I'm at 234K miles. Never changed/drained the transmission fluid. I've talked to two different mechanics and they both said not to touch it because if you flush it it may never run again because it could kick up all the gunk in the bottom and ruin it. No one here seems to mention "be careful" or "it's a risk" to change it when there are that many miles on it so I'm a little confused. Has anyone else heard not to touch it in this scenario? I'm supposed to be driving across country soon hauling a U-haul and don't want to break down because I tried something a few mechanics recommended not doing.

    • @salsarunner
      @salsarunner  Год назад

      I thought I mentioned this in the video, but maybe I didn’t… I think the general recommendation is that if your past 100k and still on the original fluid then it’s a risk. That being said, driving around with a bad torque converter is also a risk. I mean, your transmission is already broken right? It’s just not broken enough to keep you from driving right now. For what it’s worth, I did mine at like 200k and I’m now at 240k and all is well. I also just drove a uhaul trailer from Washington state to Florida and didn’t have any issues. Not saying that will be true for you. Ultimately, if you’re not in a position to fix your transmission if it does grenade it.. then I probably would just leave it alone. Good luck!

    • @salsarunner
      @salsarunner  Год назад

      Also, there’s a big difference between doing a drain and fill and a pressurized transmission “flush”. Although I’m pretty sure a mechanic would tell you both are bad if your transmissions never been opened

      @@salsarunner UPDATE: when the mechanic and i drove it around he showed me that when i drive it clutchless manual it takes the torque converter out of play. I drove it from Florida to Minnesota over 3 days using manual until i hit 60 then put it in drive for 5th gear. It worked fine and I had no issues. I’ll probably have to sell it now that I’m here for a bit. It was just the day before the trip when I left my first comment and I didn’t have a lot of options. Thanks for the info!
