I have a 2004 Toyota 4-Runner 4.7 L V8 with over 380,000 miles. I have always serviced it at 5-8K miles and always used full synthetic oil. Changed the timing belt and ATF per schedule. Only had one minor problem in18 years and had to replace the passenger side CV joint. A great AWD vehicle with 4WD features. Best vehicle I've ever owned!
I have a 2004 Sport Edition with the 4.7 V8 and have not had any issues. I am the original owner and have run Mobil One 5-30 full synthetic with 3-4 K mile oil changes or every 6 months. Last few years only put maybe 2 K miles per year for fishing pulling a 3K lb boat. 181,000 miles 90% Freeway. Live in the wet side of Oregon and salt is not an issue. Also, time belts as scheduled. I will never sell this rig. 71 years old and it will last me until I make the final transition. I love this rig! Drives tight, not one rattle. I ONLY buy Toyota products since the late 70's

My 2005 4Runner got totalled in an accident two years ago 😢. Me and my family still miss her and haven't gotten over it. A distracted driver missed a red light and t boned us. It was a tank that saved our life.Thank you brother for your review!
Damn sorry to hear that! I also was t-boned in my 2005 4runner from someone running a red light and it was totaled (nobody was hurt thankfully). I searched for 3 years until I found a suitable replacement, my 2006 limited V8, bought about 2 years ago..such a great feeling finally replacing it. I suggest keep searching!
I have a 2005 V6 4RUNNER LIMITED and it must be the best vehicle I’ve ever had. Everything feels super heavy duty and indestructible. I seriously think it will run forever and I personally feel brilliant for owning it.
I have a coworker who owned a 2006 4Runner 4.0L V6 up until 2019. The only reason my coworker got rid of it is due to suspension and water pump issues. My coworker thought the estimate from the dealer and the local repair shop was sky high fix. The SUV was traded in for a new RX 350. After a few days of driving it went to the Lexus dealer asking for the 4runner back and was told the SUV was in the process of being sold. To this day the coworker still lives with the remorse of trading in the 4Runner and mentioned to me it would've been cheaper to repair it instead of making monthly payments now.
Ouch !!! Unfortunately we car people can get led by our emotions and temporary self affirming biases at the time and make crap later regretful decisions. I still regret & miss my very first car, a 1967 HR Holden wagon my grandparents toiled hard and long to pay for and look after for 15 years before proudly handing to me which I stupidly traded on a V8 Torana SLR and debt only 12 months later. I hope that wagon is still movin’ on down the road with someone loving it.
Adding to it: If you end up having to replace front calipers, go with 5th gen calipers (less prone to seizing up). For this, you will have to have 17" wheels to clear the calipers. Also, if having to replace CV axles, consider buying used OEM axles from a 5th gen 4runner or a GX460 (can get some nice used ones with ultra low miles on them for fairly cheap) - the newer CV axles also have an extra rib or two on the engine side that allows more flex and is less prone to ripping. Look out for leaks from the transfer case actuator as well (black box on the back/bottom of the transfer case) - transfer case has to be removed and split, but the little o-ring that is the culprit is only $6. Just do your research if you are a DIYer and these 4th gens are pretty straightforward to diagnose and maintain!
This guy knows more than I do about my own rig. I use my 05 4Runner as a weekend overlanding rig. My rig has 250k it has Dobinson heavy duty suspension, custom front and rear suspension, 33” mud terrain tires, Doug Thorley heads on the V8 engine, custom exhaust, snorkel for river crossing, JBA upper control arms, no sway bars. The 4th Gen before I did all this crap to it did awesome off road, now it’s epic.
Change your rear differential breather valve, they rust and collect dirt easily causing them to not function as well which can cause your rear axle seals to blow out from pressure building up. I change mine every few years, takes two seconds and costs maybe $7 top!
Yes. I never knew it was there, but mine clogged and I blew a rear axle seal. That was a mess. You can reach up and wiggle the breather valve to make sure it moves freely and air can get out from under the cap.
@@t.johnmcmanus204 if you feel the very top of your rear differential, the big hump, then move your hand to the left of the hump, you will feel it sticking up about 1 inch
Excellent information. I have been driving my 2008 SR5 4Runner for 13 years without any problems, with normal dealer servicing. It still looks and drives like new.
As always, amazing video. Our family's 07 4Runner has 355,000 km on it. The one thing I like about these generation 4runners is that you can run them full time four-wheel drive because they have torsen differentials (on all trim levels). 5th generation 4runners only have torsen differentials on the limited models, the only trim level with full time 4wd. We also have a GX470 with 212,000 miles... They're absolutely incredible
I had a 2003 4Runner V8. Sold it due to needing a 7 seater. It had 236K miles with no unscheduled maintenance other than a brake light switch go bad. Amazing how reliable this machine was.
I currently own a 2003 4 runner special edition and love it. Only 1 previous owner who was meticulous with servicing with a Toyota dealership. I also purchased a 1984 Toyota pickup truck 4 speed from a friend in California who bought it from their neighbor of 40 years and the original owner. The 84 was in running condition upon purchase. The carbureted engine was in perfect condition and still is! There was some Rust to the body and I did decide to invest 2k ( parts and labor ) to replace parts as preventive maintenance. It gets decent gas mileage and is 100% reliable. Love ❤️ OG Toyota!
Just purchased an 06 V8 limited with 52,800 miles. Replaced the suspension and hoping Toyota’s reputation and some maintenance will carry it through another 200k. Perfect timing and a very well thought out and informative video.
Bought my 2003 V8 4wd w/ 165k miles. Now has 250k. Best purchase ever. Tows triple jet ski trailer over the Grapevine pass outside Los Angeles at 75mph to the lakes in CA every summer in 100 degree heat. 4.7 is best engine ever.
Wow, this video is spot on! I have an 06 4runner v6 4wd with 210k and finally there is a detailed video about these trucks! Another thing to note: I have the limited with the 18” alloy wheels. I also live in Chicago. 16 years of road salt destroyed these wheels. They cracked and rusted badly, and wouldn’t hold air for more than two days. Finally got new wheels and life is good again. Just like all other 4runner rust problems, wash the salt off the frame as soon as possible when it gets above freezing. And DON’T FORGET THE WHEELS
Love your channel. I've owned my 2008 4Runner for 15 years now with no problems at all, with normal dealer servicing. I get 20.1 mpg in the city (in warmer months in Iowa). No rattles or noises at all. Everything still works and looks like new. I have only replaced the tires once. I still have the original shocks, brakes, paint, air conditioning and electronics spark plugs and injectors. I did replace the lift gate switch when it stiffened up In the winter, a easy diy solution.

My 06 v6 has 156k miles, in the past 18 months, I went through failed xreas (replaced and levelled with Bilsteins), rusted out ATF lines, seized front caliper and leaking radiator. Plus the AC dash bulbs of course! It’s my daily driver from Nov to April up here in rust country and I love it. A charm to work on too…thanks again for the in depth content!
I've had my '08 V8 for seven years and still love it. I just started hearing the noise over bumps, so this video was perfectly timed, and I'll take a look at those sway bar bushings. My son just bought a '04 V8, and we're dealing with little things, like that sunroof jam you mentioned. Still, I think they are little things. Both his and mine are around 200k miles.

I have one in white same year SR5 with 170k on the clock … purchased before the pandy with 155k for $5300 … now it’s worth 7k … you can’t get that anywhere other than YOTA
I got my son an 05 4WD Limited with 204,000 in Dec of 22. Great truck. It has the V6. I actually fell in love with it and tried to get him something else, but he would not have it. I could not find another one like it, so I ended up with an 06 Lexus LX470 instead. We have two really great Toyotas in our driveway.
Love my 2004 4Runner SR5 V8, bought when new and 4Runners were affordable. It has 166,000 miles. I plan on keeping it forever; I love it! Your video gives me an idea of what to watch for as the truck ages - thank you for posting. (BTW, the 4Runner in your background looks mint!)
My frustration with my 04 Sport V8 AWD is the transfer case seal leak, cracked exhaust manifold, the genius who decided that the V8 should be AWD, sunroof drain clogs, and lastly the cracked dash. With all my crying about my 04, I really do love this 4Runner. I'm so happy I bought it. Currently at 30X,XXX miles and going!

My 2008 4Runner at 172,000 miles. Just replaced both sway bars, front axles, and front shocks. I have in the past replaced the radiator, hoses, and universal belt. Rear axle seals replaced ( expensive )Spare tire assembly was replaced ( rusted ) and lots of tires, brakes, calipers, and misc items. Still, this is the best vehicle I've ever owned.
I took my 2006 with the 4.7 v8 and 220,000 miles to my local dealer in billings and told the service manager I wanted timing belt, water pump, and tensioner and all idlers replaced. I never asked him to cut corners, told him I wanted it done right. I show up and all they changed was the belt and pump. I asked why and I was told the tech thought they looked "pretty good" . I told him it damn well better last another 100,000 miles. If I wanted a shade tree job done I would have taken it to a shade tree shop and paid a lot less.
How much did you paid? I am in the same area 😅 the paint in my 2006 it’s starting to fade.. it’s painful paying $3,500 dlls for a paint job in an almost 20 yr old vehicle. But I love it.. 160k miles but feels like a baby. 😢😢
Exactly. Went Toyota dealer on MO and they did the same thing. My 2002 Tundra is my primary vehicle with 190,000 mi. I want it to last another 200,000 mi. Finding a mechanic that looks proactively is impossible in this area.

My mom had a 2007 4runner sr5 4x4 and she has had it since 2007, never had one problem besides maintenance stuff like ball joints, oil, regular fluids, and the seals for all the doors started leaking so we replaced that, we lived in Arkansas and the road is rough, you have huge boulders sticking out, huge pot holes, creeks and everything, we were rough on it, im suprised it lasted, her 2014 rav4 tire fell off on that road lmfao. The 4runner did good, never had bad issues.
With the 4th gen v6 models, you can run them on pavement in 4 wheel drive as long as you don't lock the center differential in the transfer case. That is one feature I do miss now that I've gone to a 5th gen.
The 5th gen Limited is more like the V8 4th gens in that there is no two wheel drive mode. The V6 4th’s had 2wd, 4wd high, and 4wd low. To lock the differential in the transfer case, there was a separate button. Any of those modes can be used on pavement as long as the transfer case is not locked.
@@Venom3303snow and ice. You can steer better with the center diff unlocked. In offroad situations its good because lets say you clear an obstacle and then have a tight turn. You unlock the center diff so ypu can turn with no binding. This is what I love about my 03 Land Rover Discovery. Its full time 4wd but has a center diff lock. However for reliability I'd take the 4 runner, but having solid axles is a plus for the disco.

I have an 2003 Toyota 4-runner SR, 2WD V-6 with 385K +miles and still going strong. Original Tranny, +engine. I owned this since 2005. Very reliable. Had the front brake Caliper seize a few times, finally had the front axle/knuckles replaced at 350K..Lights burned out on Front A/C, easy to replace myself....replaced the seal around rear window myself..regular change oil/filter with synthetic every 5K...I want to hit 400K miles.. Love it.
Appreciate your informative video. I just bought a 05 V8 Sr5 4runner with 95,000 miles. Car drives smoother than my 2019 Tacoma i just sold to CarMax. So far on the 4runner I've replaced the timing belt, and had the rack and pinion replaced. So far the car has been awesome and my plan is to follow the maintenance guide and use this video to know what to look out for in the future. Hope to join the high mile 4runner club some day.
Tip: If you disconnect the battery for whatever reason the rear defrost and windshield wiper won't work until you put the back window all the way down and back up again. Don't ask my why, its a computer thing.
My '05 4- Runner V6, 5 speed - never gave me any problem - and it is still on the road and going strong. Had the oil filter on top of the engine and easy to change, unlike today's models. Oh, did have a gas door problem with the darn cable. Fixed it myself. Oil changes at 5k and dealer always did the tranny on the schedule maintenance. (drain and refill) Guess, we were lucky, none of those problems, yet.
Yes. From my understanding the FJ and this gen 4Runner use the same platform. I ended up using a 4th Gen Tacoma TRD pro shock suspension system. Gave it a 2 inch lift.
Yup did it to mine. FJ springs and Bilsten 5100 shocks front and rear. Put a 1.5” spacer on the springs in the rear and set front shocks to the highest setting. Much better ride now. Yeah it’s a little firm, but way better than the soft mushy ride it had before.

Just bought the only 2009 v8 4x4 sport edition for sale in all of California!!!. Came from Arizona with 225k miles. Bought it fot $8500!! Looooove the v8 soo smooth! A lil sun damage due to AZsun but very little oxidation ..no rust! Owned an 06 rwd and it's like night and day upgrading to v8 3wd. Just did belt and water pump.. next is upper lower arms shovks and list springs with panhard bar kit!
That's the sad part of of here in Northern Indiana. Highway crews are very salt happy in the winter and I have seen soooo many body on frame vehicles that are mechanically sound and otherwise pristine condition that have to be parted out because the frames are rotted to the point they are no longer safe from all the corrosive salt. I really wish Toyota never got rid of the V8 in the 4Runner, understand why they did, but it really made it and even more capable vehicle.
When you own a body on frame vehicle you really have to Maintain it. That means washing off the salt as early as possible in the spring. Inspect, clean off rust, and coat underside with POR15. Most drivers care only for their paint & hardly look under. It’s called neglect
I absolutely love my 03' v6. 309k miles on it and think it's the best vehicle ever made. Definitely the best I've ever had. It needs a paint job but thats prob because I keep it outside. I don't think I could ever get rid of it. I wish mine was 4x4. I put bilstein shocks all the way around, FJ coils up front to lift it a little and boy I love how it drives!
So last year someone runs a red light and hits us in the passenger front corner. Both front Airbags deploy and front frame support bends along with the damage you would expect. windshield, bumper, fender etc. toast. Insurance totals it out. I buy it back and got it restored. I have a connect in Tijuana so labor was less expensive. With the Insurance check, I was able to get it back! hahahaha. And got it completely painted. hilarious right? i just can't let HER go. It's been in the garage for the last 6 months. Only thing outstanding is the dash w/passenger airbag. Found one at a junkyard in LA and hopefully in the next 2 weeks will have it installed and all airbags/safety sensors reset. She looks pretty again. 🤩😍 What a absolutely great truck!@@mendoblendo321

@@TheCarCareNut *shakes fist* yes you can have them all back!! Another thing I noticed while looking at these trucks is some of them had dashboard warpage. I recently purchased a 06 4runner V8 2wd limited with 210k. I replaced all of the suspension (cracked/torn bushings), did a brake system swap with GX460/5th gen 4runner (bolts right on, I have my oem calipers if anyone needs them!), Replaced the leaking cam seals and radiator (along with every other gasket and seal along the way), everything else was good! The air pump/valves had already been replaced. Full maintenance and drives like new. I love it!
This channel is so very helpful. Thank you. There is a 4 runner near me that has been parked for at least 2 years. I believe it is this generation. Essentially, the owners have abandoned all hopes of repairs. My thought was to offer them salvage money to take it off their hands. Yet after watching this excellent presentation. I believe it is not worth the effort. Even if I did all the work myself. I could actually purchase something else with few if any issues for the same money. Thank you.
Worst problem I’ve had with my 2003 V6 was the radiator developed a hole where radiator fluid got into the transmission. Had the get a complete rebuild and the shop had the worst time locating a replacement torque converter. Whatever torque converter that was on my vehicle was non-standard. So far the vehicle has gone well on the rebuilt transmission.
My '08 SR5 4WD has 230K on it. I've replaced the alternator, the radiator and one wheel bearing; nothing else. No rust, no problems. I don't commute in it, but I do drive it daily and it's an outstanding vehicle.
I worked as a service advisor in a Toyota dealership in 2005 and I recall a LOT of 4Runner sunroofs being replaced. And I just now realized that these trucks were brand new at that time, wow that went fast
Great review. I have a 2006 4 Runner LTD V8 that I bought new. Still have it and live in the rust belt! North of Toronto, Ontario. I had it factory undercoated and oiled as well and oiled every year. Last year the build up on the frame was about 1/8” thick. I scraped a bit off and there was still paint on the frame! Definitely saved the frame. It has 237,000kms on it and runs like new. I wouldn’t sell it. Yes I replaced a manifold and have replaced the front calipers a few times. But it has never let me down and great for towing my boats and snowmobile trailer!

Good to know! Just last year, I brought my California 4Runner to New England and IMMEDIATELY had it undercoated with Fluid Film and the risk of rust and corrosion from salted roads is always in the back of my mind. The shop that did the FF treatment recommends doing it every 3 years max, but I'm tempted to do it more often for sure. Worth every penny.
I know this is an older video but this was super helpful. I’m currently looking at purchasing a 2004 sr5 3 owner with 150k from the dealership I work at, the truck has some rust but no rot. Sounds good drove good. But my concern is the age and the miles and the amount of owners. I currently drive a 70k mile 2016 Honda fit which has been pretty reliable. This video has given me some new knowledge and was super helpful.
I am trying to get my whole family into T4R's. They are reliable and easy to work on. Love this channel and his advise. Scotty Kilmer says 4Runners are the best vehicles ever built.
Best and most reliable vehicle I ever owned, 2007 4Runner SR5 V6 now at 279,000 miles. Original motor and tranny. Timing chain is still the one from the factory. The only instance I was stalled on the road was for leaky tire. I bought it brand new and I live in Las Vegas so my frame is in pristine condition.

I just bought an aftermarket axle last week since my boot was ripped. problem is I purchased the truck like that so I have no idea how long it's been. There's no noise in full steering lock so I'll assume the internals are okay and take your recommendation to buy a boot kit first. I'll inspect the joint when I have it cleaned out. If everything is good I'll return the axle
Hi! Those axles can take a beating! Unless they’re rusty inside and/or hard to move they should be good with the boot kit which comes with everything even the grease.
That's, AMD, were now seriously considering an '08 we found that's a lifelong Southern vehicle, one owner and zero accidents. Good to know that's one of the better years! Love the ending, as that's something I would do, too. 😅🤣😂
My sisters 08 with v6 developed a weird problem. Trans fluid was wicking through the harness and contaminated the drivers side AFR sensor. There was trans fluid in the AFR connector and in the connecors at the PCM. Had to take the pan off and replace the harness in the transmission. Also had the sway bar noises but unfortunately even with heat and penetrant spray, still broke one of tbe welded nuts in the frame. That turned into a fun time. Also replaced many front calipers and the line that connects to them. Yes its a salt belt truck😃
My 2003 4runner with 265K miles and is still purring like when it was brand new with just basic maintenance. Love this SUV and will try to keep it as long as I could.
I had issues with the gas cap causing a whole bunch of lights on the dash (like 3 warning lights). more specifically, the rubber gas cap gasket. had to replace it 2 or 3 times before realizing i could just change the rubber gasket. I had/have all the problems (seized calipers, melted rear hatch handle, bulbs, etc). No V8 issues. I did a transmission complete fluid exchange at 40k
Thanks for the info - I have been a long subscriber. We just bought (for our young daughter) a 2006 1 owner (we bought it from the owner) 2006 V8 Sports Edition 4x4. It was also a southern (Atlanta) car - not a rust issue. It has 84500 miles and very clean - though the paint has some fading - not bad and it is fine for our daughter. We had a little over 3 hours to drive it home and it certainly is a smooth vehicle. The car was regularly serviced and the most current service showed the timing belt was fine. We however are scheduled to have the timing belt (and water pump, thermostat. starter along with idler pulley, etc) changed in the next 2 weeks (that's as soon as we can get appointment ).
The engine manifold has a recall and was a $3,400 fix. Also the electronic actuator for the center diff lock will sieze up if not used for long periods of time. This also cost around $3,400. Make sure to check before buying one. The light should stay solid. If flashing it’s not engaging. Other than that a very solid truck. I have put $10k of maintenance and over 20k of mods in the last 5 years owning my 06 v8
2003 4Runner here, with only 336k miles on it, (I’m still breaking the engine in) it’s running like a dream, maintaining it every 2.5k-3k miles (maintenance is cheap the engine is not) and still going strong.
Great video. Still love my 04 v8 SR5 4x4, even with some of the problems you mentioned: Front Calipers x 2, leaking front CV boots, ABS brake motor/master cylinder, and the AC controls lighbults (LOL) ). 3 of 4 door's lock actuators also went out.
I have my love hate relationship with my 2004. Had to get the head gaskets done and I'm battling rust. I'm also experiencing some transfer case issues. Really wish toyota gave the manual transfer case option. All in all I regret buying it. I should have gotten the Lexus gx 460 or 470 variant. Its very similar but has a manual transfer case along with some other differences.
I just bought one 2007 with 50,800 miles on it in Albuquerque New Mexico always garaged could not get over the shape of the frame. It didn’t even have dust on it. I think I over paid for it but the shape that the vehicle is in, I think, is worth every penny. $24,500 out the door. Hoping that it will last. I’ve been wanting a forerunner for at least 15 years. I would love and cherish it.
NICE! I just picked up an 08 Limited 4wd with 42k out of Michigan for $19k to transplant my 04 Limited with 268k. Rust finally did her in. Sound system, Icon suspension, and 285s are going on the new "Sharon". The nice thing too is you can supercharge the 06+ 4runners with a package from Underdog racing, 335whp for $7k. Congrats!
Loved my 04 4Runner. My biggest problems were the frame rust on the radiator support. Also the transmission cooling lines that run in front of the radiator support, the lines rust out and leak atf. CV boots went bad, my Toyota shop replaced the axles with aftermarkets and we had issues where one side. It blew out the wheel bearing after 1 day of driving, turned out the axle didn't fit correctly 1/4" too long. Luckily the shop got the manufacture to pay for much of the repairs and replacements. 10 years and 98k I traded it in on my current 15 4Runner. Living in PA I make sure everything is undercoated.
To me, it was the defective running gear that gave us fits. Always went “clunk” when coming up to a stop. Was common on many rear wheel drive Toyota vehicles between 2004-2008. Toyota claimed they couldn’t fix it. Mine was so bad I got rid of the vehicle. Besides my 4Runner’s problem, my local Toyota dealer’s service manager had the same problem on his Sequoia and my daughter’s ‘07 Tacoma had it bad too. Wish Toyota would have done a recall. It would have given me more confidence in buying a future Toyota products.
I miss the 4.7 engine as well . I had it in my ‘02 tundra and ‘ 07 sequoia . Follow the maintenance schedule in the book , do the timing belt at 80k , pressure wash the salt off the frame frequently and it won’t leave you stranded. Simple to work on , decent gas mileage ( compared to the 5.7 ) . The F18 hornet gets better gas mileage than my ‘16 tundra 5.7 .
I’ve had both versions of the Sequoia. The 4.7 is the least intimidating modern engine bay, for sure, you could crawl in there and find enough room to take a nap. In defense of the 5.7 it is in another league in terms of power, and I haven’t had any issues with it either.
I have 2007 SR5 4 v6 4WD with a third row for a decade now - 150,000 miles with absolutely no issues with the engine or transmission - since I’m in Canada - a lot of wear and tear happened because of the salt in winter which were replaced or fixed by only OEM parts installed and serviced by Toyota only - I have no reasons to sell this truck but to get a newer model - in my opinion the engine and basic mechanicals are identical between the 4th and 5th gen except for engine updates and suspension options like KDSS - I love it because it’s rarer than the 5th gen because the recession was in full swing - folks of you find a clean and well maintained unit - buy it with your eyes closed
I just found this channel and subbed to it, I have a 2003 4runner limited 4wd 4.7 V8 with just a little over 190,000on it and I have had it for 4 years now, It's been a great vehicle out of the 4 years I have had it have had zero issues with it and still runs great, love this truck, I do have rust with the frame but not extremely terrible yet mostly in the back at the bumper area, so thank you for sharing the most common issues with these trucks will definitely keep my eye on these things you shared.
My T4R spark plugs had never been replaced by the PO. Those things were SO SEIZED in the head. Took 3 days of soaking in pb and slowly turning them in and back out. That was an extremely stressful repair that could have been way worse.

I have a 2004 Toyota 4-Runner 4.7 L V8 with over 380,000 miles. I have always serviced it at
5-8K miles and always used full synthetic oil. Changed the timing belt and ATF per schedule. Only had one minor problem in18 years and had to replace the passenger side CV joint.

I have a 2004 Sport Edition with the 4.7 V8 and have not had any issues. I am the original owner and have run Mobil One 5-30 full synthetic with 3-4 K mile oil changes or every 6 months. Last few years only put maybe 2 K miles per year for fishing pulling a 3K lb boat. 181,000 miles 90% Freeway. Live in the wet side of Oregon and salt is not an issue. Also, time belts as scheduled. I will never sell this rig. 71 years old and it will last me until I make the final transition. I love this rig! Drives tight, not one rattle. I ONLY buy Toyota products since the late 70's

I searched for 3 years until I found a suitable replacement, my 2006 limited V8, bought about 2 years ago..such a great feeling finally replacing it. I suggest keep searching!

I have a coworker who owned a 2006 4Runner 4.0L V6 up until 2019. The only reason my coworker got rid of it is due to suspension and water pump issues. My coworker thought the estimate from the dealer and the local repair shop was sky high fix. The SUV was traded in for a new RX 350. After a few days of driving it went to the Lexus dealer asking for the 4runner back and was told the SUV was in the process of being sold. To this day the coworker still lives with the remorse of trading in the 4Runner and mentioned to me it would've been cheaper to repair it instead of making monthly payments now.
Ouch !!! Unfortunately we car people can get led by our emotions and temporary self affirming biases at the time and make crap later regretful decisions. I still regret & miss my very first car, a 1967 HR Holden wagon my grandparents toiled hard and long to pay for and look after for 15 years before proudly handing to me which I stupidly traded on a V8 Torana SLR and debt only 12 months later. I hope that wagon is still movin’ on down the road with someone loving it.

Adding to it: If you end up having to replace front calipers, go with 5th gen calipers (less prone to seizing up). For this, you will have to have 17" wheels to clear the calipers. Also, if having to replace CV axles, consider buying used OEM axles from a 5th gen 4runner or a GX460 (can get some nice used ones with ultra low miles on them for fairly cheap) - the newer CV axles also have an extra rib or two on the engine side that allows more flex and is less prone to ripping. Look out for leaks from the transfer case actuator as well (black box on the back/bottom of the transfer case) - transfer case has to be removed and split, but the little o-ring that is the culprit is only $6. Just do your research if you are a DIYer and these 4th gens are pretty straightforward to diagnose and maintain!

This guy knows more than I do about my own rig. I use my 05 4Runner as a weekend overlanding rig. My rig has 250k it has Dobinson heavy duty suspension, custom front and rear suspension, 33” mud terrain tires, Doug Thorley heads on the V8 engine, custom exhaust, snorkel for river crossing, JBA upper control arms, no sway bars. The 4th Gen before I did all this crap to it did awesome off road, now it’s epic.

I do rust repair in the northeast. These trucks are job security.
Change your rear differential breather valve, they rust and collect dirt easily causing them to not function as well which can cause your rear axle seals to blow out from pressure building up. I change mine every few years, takes two seconds and costs maybe $7 top!

Yes. I never knew it was there, but mine clogged and I blew a rear axle seal. That was a mess. You can reach up and wiggle the breather valve to make sure it moves freely and air can get out from under the cap.

As always, amazing video. Our family's 07 4Runner has 355,000 km on it. The one thing I like about these generation 4runners is that you can run them full time four-wheel drive because they have torsen differentials (on all trim levels). 5th generation 4runners only have torsen differentials on the limited models, the only trim level with full time 4wd. We also have a GX470 with 212,000 miles... They're absolutely incredible
I had a 2003 4Runner V8. Sold it due to needing a 7 seater. It had 236K miles with no unscheduled maintenance other than a brake light switch go bad. Amazing how reliable this machine was.
I currently own a 2003 4 runner special edition and love it. Only 1 previous owner who was meticulous with servicing with a Toyota dealership. I also purchased a 1984 Toyota pickup truck 4 speed from a friend in California who bought it from their neighbor of 40 years and the original owner. The 84 was in running condition upon purchase. The carbureted engine was in perfect condition and still is! There was some Rust to the body and I did decide to invest 2k ( parts and labor ) to replace parts as preventive maintenance. It gets decent gas mileage and is 100% reliable. Love ❤️ OG Toyota!
Just purchased an 06 V8 limited with 52,800 miles. Replaced the suspension and hoping Toyota’s reputation and some maintenance will carry it through another 200k. Perfect timing and a very well thought out and informative video.

Bought my 2003 V8 4wd w/ 165k miles. Now has 250k. Best purchase ever. Tows triple jet ski trailer over the Grapevine pass outside Los Angeles at 75mph to the lakes in CA every summer in 100 degree heat. 4.7 is best engine ever.

Wow, this video is spot on! I have an 06 4runner v6 4wd with 210k and finally there is a detailed video about these trucks! Another thing to note: I have the limited with the 18” alloy wheels. I also live in Chicago. 16 years of road salt destroyed these wheels. They cracked and rusted badly, and wouldn’t hold air for more than two days. Finally got new wheels and life is good again. Just like all other 4runner rust problems, wash the salt off the frame as soon as possible when it gets above freezing. And DON’T FORGET THE WHEELS
Love your channel. I've owned my 2008 4Runner for 15 years now with no problems at all, with normal dealer servicing. I get 20.1 mpg in the city (in warmer months in Iowa). No rattles or noises at all. Everything still works and looks like new. I have only replaced the tires once. I still have the original shocks, brakes, paint, air conditioning and electronics spark plugs and injectors. I did replace the lift gate switch when it stiffened up In the winter, a easy diy solution.

My 06 v6 has 156k miles, in the past 18 months, I went through failed xreas (replaced and levelled with Bilsteins), rusted out ATF lines, seized front caliper and leaking radiator. Plus the AC dash bulbs of course! It’s my daily driver from Nov to April up here in rust country and I love it. A charm to work on too…thanks again for the in depth content!

I've had my '08 V8 for seven years and still love it. I just started hearing the noise over bumps, so this video was perfectly timed, and I'll take a look at those sway bar bushings. My son just bought a '04 V8, and we're dealing with little things, like that sunroof jam you mentioned. Still, I think they are little things. Both his and mine are around 200k miles.

I got my son an 05 4WD Limited with 204,000 in Dec of 22. Great truck. It has the V6. I actually fell in love with it and tried to get him something else, but he would not have it. I could not find another one like it, so I ended up with an 06 Lexus LX470 instead. We have two really great Toyotas in our driveway.

My frustration with my 04 Sport V8 AWD is the transfer case seal leak, cracked exhaust manifold, the genius who decided that the V8 should be AWD, sunroof drain clogs, and lastly the cracked dash. With all my crying about my 04, I really do love this 4Runner. I'm so happy I bought it. Currently at 30X,XXX miles and going!

My 2008 4Runner at 172,000 miles. Just replaced both sway bars, front axles, and front shocks. I have in the past replaced the radiator, hoses, and universal belt. Rear axle seals replaced ( expensive )Spare tire assembly was replaced ( rusted ) and lots of tires, brakes, calipers, and misc items. Still, this is the best vehicle I've ever owned.
I took my 2006 with the 4.7 v8 and 220,000 miles to my local dealer in billings and told the service manager I wanted timing belt, water pump, and tensioner and all idlers replaced. I never asked him to cut corners, told him I wanted it done right. I show up and all they changed was the belt and pump. I asked why and I was told the tech thought they looked "pretty good" . I told him it damn well better last another 100,000 miles. If I wanted a shade tree job done I would have taken it to a shade tree shop and paid a lot less.
How much did you paid? I am in the same area 😅 the paint in my 2006 it’s starting to fade.. it’s painful paying $3,500 dlls for a paint job in an almost 20 yr old vehicle. But I love it.. 160k miles but feels like a baby. 😢😢

Exactly. Went Toyota dealer on MO and they did the same thing. My 2002 Tundra is my primary vehicle with 190,000 mi. I want it to last another 200,000 mi. Finding a mechanic that looks proactively is impossible in this area.
My 06 V6 has 384,000. Two water pumps, radiator, flex fan and suspension. Routine maintenance.
Short cut for knock sensor is cut the bracket that holds the big coolant pipe to the small one. Avoids removal of cylinder head.
Doug Thorley exhaust headers on my 2006. Problem solved. Not a cheap fix, mind you, but well worth it. Love my V8!

I have an 05 4runner 4.0 and got the common head gasket failure known in the 03-05’s. Finally got the motor fully rebuilt. Good as new
I've had 4 of these all 2003...nothing but tires brakes batteries and oil changes and over 300k on each and still going!

My mom had a 2007 4runner sr5 4x4 and she has had it since 2007, never had one problem besides maintenance stuff like ball joints, oil, regular fluids, and the seals for all the doors started leaking so we replaced that, we lived in Arkansas and the road is rough, you have huge boulders sticking out, huge pot holes, creeks and everything, we were rough on it, im suprised it lasted, her 2014 rav4 tire fell off on that road lmfao. The 4runner did good, never had bad issues.
With the 4th gen v6 models, you can run them on pavement in 4 wheel drive as long as you don't lock the center differential in the transfer case. That is one feature I do miss now that I've gone to a 5th gen.
Limited model in 5th gen has that capability
The 5th gen Limited is more like the V8 4th gens in that there is no two wheel drive mode. The V6 4th’s had 2wd, 4wd high, and 4wd low. To lock the differential in the transfer case, there was a separate button. Any of those modes can be used on pavement as long as the transfer case is not locked.

@@Venom3303snow and ice. You can steer better with the center diff unlocked. In offroad situations its good because lets say you clear an obstacle and then have a tight turn. You unlock the center diff so ypu can turn with no binding. This is what I love about my 03 Land Rover Discovery. Its full time 4wd but has a center diff lock. However for reliability I'd take the 4 runner, but having solid axles is a plus for the disco.
Always learning things on this channel, unlike some others. And you are not being called "stupid" etc. if you did that or over something that was not important to you, anyway. I have an 2003 Toyota 4-runner SR, 2WD V-6 with 385K +miles and still going strong. Original Tranny, +engine. I owned this since 2005. Very reliable. Had the front brake Caliper seize a few times, finally had the front axle/knuckles replaced at 350K..Lights burned out on Front A/C, easy to replace myself....replaced the seal around rear window myself..regular change oil/filter with synthetic every 5K...I want to hit 400K miles.. Love it.

Appreciate your informative video. I just bought a 05 V8 Sr5 4runner with 95,000 miles. Car drives smoother than my 2019 Tacoma i just sold to CarMax. So far on the 4runner I've replaced the timing belt, and had the rack and pinion replaced. So far the car has been awesome and my plan is to follow the maintenance guide and use this video to know what to look out for in the future. Hope to join the high mile 4runner club some day.

Tip: If you disconnect the battery for whatever reason the rear defrost and windshield wiper won't work until you put the back window all the way down and back up again. Don't ask my why, its a computer thing.
My '05 4- Runner V6, 5 speed - never gave me any problem - and it is still on the road and going strong. Had the oil filter on top of the engine and easy to change, unlike today's models. Oh, did have a gas door problem with the darn cable. Fixed it myself. Oil changes at 5k and dealer always did the tranny on the schedule maintenance. (drain and refill)

You can put FJ cruiser springs on these and it lifts it 1 - 1.5”
Yes. From my understanding the FJ and this gen 4Runner use the same platform. I ended up using a 4th Gen Tacoma TRD pro shock suspension system. Gave it a 2 inch lift.
Yup did it to mine. FJ springs and Bilsten 5100 shocks front and rear. Put a 1.5” spacer on the springs in the rear and set front shocks to the highest setting. Much better ride now. Yeah it’s a little firm, but way better than the soft mushy ride it had before.

Just bought the only 2009 v8 4x4 sport edition for sale in all of California!!!. Came from Arizona with 225k miles. Bought it fot $8500!! Looooove the v8 soo smooth! A lil sun damage due to AZsun but very little oxidation ..no rust! Owned an 06 rwd and it's like night and day upgrading to v8 3wd. Just did belt and water pump.. next is upper lower arms shovks and list springs with panhard bar kit!

That's the sad part of of here in Northern Indiana. Highway crews are very salt happy in the winter and I have seen soooo many body on frame vehicles that are mechanically sound and otherwise pristine condition that have to be parted out because the frames are rotted to the point they are no longer safe from all the corrosive salt. I really wish Toyota never got rid of the V8 in the 4Runner, understand why they did, but it really made it and even more capable vehicle.
When you own a body on frame vehicle you really have to Maintain it. That means washing off the salt as early as possible in the spring. Inspect, clean off rust, and coat underside with POR15. Most drivers care only for their paint & hardly look under. It’s called neglect

My wife has an 03 4Runner Sport Edition with the 4.0L. Love it, it only has 164K on it, and living its whole life in Texas it has zero rust.
I absolutely love my 03' v6. 309k miles on it and think it's the best vehicle ever made. Definitely the best I've ever had. It needs a paint job but thats prob because I keep it outside. I don't think I could ever get rid of it. I wish mine was 4x4. I put bilstein shocks all the way around, FJ coils up front to lift it a little and boy I love how it drives!

So last year someone runs a red light and hits us in the passenger front corner. Both front Airbags deploy and front frame support bends along with the damage you would expect. windshield, bumper, fender etc. toast. Insurance totals it out. I buy it back and got it restored. I have a connect in Tijuana so labor was less expensive. With the Insurance check, I was able to get it back! hahahaha. And got it completely painted. hilarious right? i just can't let HER go. It's been in the garage for the last 6 months. Only thing outstanding is the dash w/passenger airbag. Found one at a junkyard in LA and hopefully in the next 2 weeks will have it installed and all airbags/safety sensors reset. She looks pretty again. 🤩😍 What a absolutely great truck!@@mendoblendo321

Another thing I noticed while looking at these trucks is some of them had dashboard warpage.
I recently purchased a 06 4runner V8 2wd limited with 210k. I replaced all of the suspension (cracked/torn bushings), did a brake system swap with GX460/5th gen 4runner (bolts right on, I have my oem calipers if anyone needs them!), Replaced the leaking cam seals and radiator (along with every other gasket and seal along the way), everything else was good! The air pump/valves had already been replaced. Full maintenance and drives like new. I love it!

There is a 4 runner near me that has been parked for at least 2 years. I believe it is this generation. Essentially, the owners have abandoned all hopes of repairs. My thought was to offer them salvage money to take it off their hands. Yet after watching this excellent presentation. I believe it is not worth the effort. Even if I did all the work myself. I could actually purchase something else with few if any issues for the same money.

Worst problem I’ve had with my 2003 V6 was the radiator developed a hole where radiator fluid got into the transmission. Had the get a complete rebuild and the shop had the worst time locating a replacement torque converter. Whatever torque converter that was on my vehicle was non-standard. So far the vehicle has gone well on the rebuilt transmission.
Over the years I have owned over 30 vehicles and by far the one I have been most impresed with is the 4 runner I like it so much I own two of them.
I bought an 04 gx470 for $4500 last year, w/270K miles. Runs like a brand new car.
My '08 SR5 4WD has 230K on it. I've replaced the alternator, the radiator and one wheel bearing; nothing else. No rust, no problems. I don't commute in it, but I do drive it daily and it's an outstanding vehicle.
2007 Toyota 4Runner, best vehicle I have ever owned with no issues.
My 2009 SR5 4WD V6 is awesome. Have it for 2 years now and do my own oil changes. Very cheap to maintain.
I worked as a service advisor in a Toyota dealership in 2005 and I recall a LOT of 4Runner sunroofs being replaced. And I just now realized that these trucks were brand new at that time, wow that went fast
Great review. I have a 2006 4 Runner LTD V8 that I bought new. Still have it and live in the rust belt! North of Toronto, Ontario. I had it factory undercoated and oiled as well and oiled every year. Last year the build up on the frame was about 1/8” thick. I scraped a bit off and there was still paint on the frame! Definitely saved the frame. It has 237,000kms on it and runs like new. I wouldn’t sell it. Yes I replaced a manifold and have replaced the front calipers a few times. But it has never let me down and great for towing my boats and snowmobile trailer!

Actually Dave I don’t think I will ever sell it! I don’t care for the new ones. I took this 4 Runner for a 160km drive the other day and it drives as well as the day I bought it.

Good to know! Just last year, I brought my California 4Runner to New England and IMMEDIATELY had it undercoated with Fluid Film and the risk of rust and corrosion from salted roads is always in the back of my mind. The shop that did the FF treatment recommends doing it every 3 years max, but I'm tempted to do it more often for sure. Worth every penny.
I know this is an older video but this was super helpful. I’m currently looking at purchasing a 2004 sr5 3 owner with 150k from the dealership I work at, the truck has some rust but no rot. Sounds good drove good. But my concern is the age and the miles and the amount of owners. I currently drive a 70k mile 2016 Honda fit which has been pretty reliable. This video has given me some new knowledge and was super helpful.
I love my 2004 V8 4Runner. 2013,000 miles. Runs great, I will never sell it.

Best and most reliable vehicle I ever owned, 2007 4Runner SR5 V6 now at 279,000 miles. Original motor and tranny. Timing chain is still the one from the factory. The only instance I was stalled on the road was for leaky tire. I bought it brand new and I live in Las Vegas so my frame is in pristine condition.
You're a LEGEND. What a awesome video. I'm subbed! I just bought a 2003 4.7 and this helped so much in planning my preventative maintenance. I just bought an aftermarket axle last week since my boot was ripped. problem is I purchased the truck like that so I have no idea how long it's been. There's no noise in full steering lock so I'll assume the internals are okay and take your recommendation to buy a boot kit first. I'll inspect the joint when I have it cleaned out. If everything is good I'll return the axle
Hi! Those axles can take a beating! Unless they’re rusty inside and/or hard to move they should be good with the boot kit which comes with everything even the grease.
That's, AMD, were now seriously considering an '08 we found that's a lifelong Southern vehicle, one owner and zero accidents. Good to know that's one of the better years! Love the ending, as that's something I would do, too. 😅🤣😂
My sisters 08 with v6 developed a weird problem. Trans fluid was wicking through the harness and contaminated the drivers side AFR sensor. There was trans fluid in the AFR connector and in the connecors at the PCM. Had to take the pan off and replace the harness in the transmission. Also had the sway bar noises but unfortunately even with heat and penetrant spray, still broke one of tbe welded nuts in the frame. That turned into a fun time. Also replaced many front calipers and the line that connects to them. Yes its a salt belt truck😃

My 2003 4runner with 265K miles and is still purring like when it was brand new with just basic maintenance. Love this SUV and will try to keep it as long as I could.
I had issues with the gas cap causing a whole bunch of lights on the dash (like 3 warning lights). more specifically, the rubber gas cap gasket. had to replace it 2 or 3 times before realizing i could just change the rubber gasket.
I had/have all the problems (seized calipers, melted rear hatch handle, bulbs, etc). No V8 issues. I did a transmission complete fluid exchange at 40k

We just bought (for our young daughter) a 2006 1 owner (we bought it from the owner) 2006 V8 Sports Edition 4x4. It was also a southern (Atlanta) car - not a rust issue. It has 84500 miles and very clean - though the paint has some fading - not bad and it is fine for our daughter. We had a little over 3 hours to drive it home and it certainly is a smooth vehicle. The car was regularly serviced and the most current service showed the timing belt was fine. We however are scheduled to have the timing belt (and water pump, thermostat. starter along with idler pulley, etc) changed in the next 2 weeks (that's as soon as we can get appointment ).
The Rear defroster causes the rear windows to blow out also there is a tsb on the rear glass exploding during defrost operations

The engine manifold has a recall and was a $3,400 fix. Also the electronic actuator for the center diff lock will sieze up if not used for long periods of time. This also cost around $3,400. Make sure to check before buying one. The light should stay solid. If flashing it’s not engaging. Other than that a very solid truck. I have put $10k of maintenance and over 20k of mods in the last 5 years owning my 06 v8
2003 4Runner here, with only 336k miles on it, (I’m still breaking the engine in) it’s running like a dream, maintaining it every 2.5k-3k miles (maintenance is cheap the engine is not) and still going strong.

Great video. Still love my 04 v8 SR5 4x4, even with some of the problems you mentioned: Front Calipers x 2, leaking front CV boots, ABS brake motor/master cylinder, and the AC controls lighbults (LOL) ). 3 of 4 door's lock actuators also went out.

I have a 2007 Toyota 4runner 4.0 engine 250k miles still running good.
I have my love hate relationship with my 2004. Had to get the head gaskets done and I'm battling rust. I'm also experiencing some transfer case issues. Really wish toyota gave the manual transfer case option. All in all I regret buying it. I should have gotten the Lexus gx 460 or 470 variant. Its very similar but has a manual transfer case along with some other differences.
I just bought one 2007 with 50,800 miles on it in Albuquerque New Mexico always garaged could not get over the shape of the frame. It didn’t even have dust on it. I think I over paid for it but the shape that the vehicle is in, I think, is worth every penny. $24,500 out the door. Hoping that it will last. I’ve been wanting a forerunner for at least 15 years. I would love and cherish it.
NICE! I just picked up an 08 Limited 4wd with 42k out of Michigan for $19k to transplant my 04 Limited with 268k. Rust finally did her in. Sound system, Icon suspension, and 285s are going on the new "Sharon". The nice thing too is you can supercharge the 06+ 4runners with a package from Underdog racing, 335whp for $7k. Congrats!
Great video. I just bought my first 4Runner an 07 Sport with only 119k miles. I’m in the south so no rust, lol.
I have a 06 4Runner with 177 m, its still runs good and I don't have any problem just like brand new when its running.
Loved my 04 4Runner. My biggest problems were the frame rust on the radiator support. Also the transmission cooling lines that run in front of the radiator support, the lines rust out and leak atf. CV boots went bad, my Toyota shop replaced the axles with aftermarkets and we had issues where one side. It blew out the wheel bearing after 1 day of driving, turned out the axle didn't fit correctly 1/4" too long. Luckily the shop got the manufacture to pay for much of the repairs and replacements. 10 years and 98k I traded it in on my current 15 4Runner. Living in PA I make sure everything is undercoated.
Same here, NJ, radiator support had rust holes. Other than that the frame is good and I just coated it.
To me, it was the defective running gear that gave us fits. Always went “clunk” when coming up to a stop. Was common on many rear wheel drive Toyota vehicles between 2004-2008. Toyota claimed they couldn’t fix it. Mine was so bad I got rid of the vehicle. Besides my 4Runner’s problem, my local Toyota dealer’s service manager had the same problem on his Sequoia and my daughter’s ‘07 Tacoma had it bad too. Wish Toyota would have done a recall. It would have given me more confidence in buying a future Toyota products.
Yet mysteriously they were able to fix it on the Lexus one. Very interesting Toyota…
I miss the 4.7 engine as well . I had it in my ‘02 tundra and ‘ 07 sequoia . Follow the maintenance schedule in the book , do the timing belt at 80k , pressure wash the salt off the frame frequently and it won’t leave you stranded. Simple to work on , decent gas mileage ( compared to the 5.7 ) . The F18 hornet gets better gas mileage than my ‘16 tundra 5.7 .

I’ve had both versions of the Sequoia. The 4.7 is the least intimidating modern engine bay, for sure, you could crawl in there and find enough room to take a nap. In defense of the 5.7 it is in another league in terms of power, and I haven’t had any issues with it either.
I have 2007 SR5 4 v6 4WD with a third row for a decade now - 150,000 miles with absolutely no issues with the engine or transmission - since I’m in Canada - a lot of wear and tear happened because of the salt in winter which were replaced or fixed by only OEM parts installed and serviced by Toyota only - I have no reasons to sell this truck but to get a newer model - in my opinion the engine and basic mechanicals are identical between the 4th and 5th gen except for engine updates and suspension options like KDSS - I love it because it’s rarer than the 5th gen because the recession was in full swing - folks of you find a clean and well maintained unit - buy it with your eyes closed

I just found this channel and subbed to it, I have a 2003 4runner limited 4wd 4.7 V8 with just a little over 190,000on it and I have had it for 4 years now, It's been a great vehicle out of the 4 years I have had it have had zero issues with it and still runs great, love this truck, I do have rust with the frame but not extremely terrible yet mostly in the back at the bumper area, so thank you for sharing the most common issues with these trucks will definitely keep my eye on these things you shared.
My T4R spark plugs had never been replaced by the PO. Those things were SO SEIZED in the head. Took 3 days of soaking in pb and slowly turning them in and back out. That was an extremely stressful repair that could have been way worse.
