    Thank you a lot, I'm pretty sure native german speakers make this mistake quite often because the german word “mir“ can mean both, “me“ and “to me“, depending on the context. And it usually follows the german word for explain if you ask for a reason.

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  6 лет назад

      Hi Samra. I'm not sure what you mean. Explain means telling somebody about something in a way that makes it easy to understand. Hard has several different meanings. For example, difficult, not soft,

    • @altrefrontiere2354
      @altrefrontiere2354 5 лет назад

      It's hard to explain the difference between "hard" and "explain". :) There's no correlation here: "hard" is an adjective and means "difficult" (in this case) and "explain" is a verb. Samra, your question is hard to understand, explain yourself better :)

    In Brazilian Portuguese, the verb "explain" (=explicar) is both transitive and intransitive verb. It might be followed by a preposition or not depending on the context.

  • @Aspro4
    @Aspro4 4 года назад +1

    It may also be useful to point out that the English noun derived from the verb “to explain” is “explanation”, so it looks different from the French word “explication”, which has the same meaning.

    Hello, Simple English) I've got a question.
    What is more correct?
    How do you think OR What do you think?
    Some sources say it's not correct to say 'how do you think?'
    But I've heard both forms...
    Please, help me to find it out)

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  6 лет назад

      Great question! If you want to know someone's opinion, the standard question would be 'What do you think?' But also note that we often ask 'How do you feel?" This means much the same thing, is also correct and is very common. If people say 'How do you think?' it's probably a slip. They are creating a blend of the two questions - so they start to ask one question but change half way through. We're all human so I expect we've all done that. :-) . But this slip makes no sense because it would mean, 'What physical processes do you go through to think?' so the answer would have to be something like 'I go to a dark room and fire up the neurons in my brain.' Very strange. :-) Hope this helps.

  • @Theyoutuberpolyglot

    Vicky, why means and not mean. Could you explain what this word means?
    You don't use means in interrogative or negative sentences, only in affirmative sentences.
    There is also a modal verb could.

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  5 лет назад

      I'm not sure if I understand the question, but let me take a shot at the anser.
      'Mean' is a normal verb. So we'd say 'I mean...' 'You mean....' but 'It means....' because it takes the third person s in the present simple. WE'd form questions and negatives with 'do and 'does'.

    • @Theyoutuberpolyglot
      @Theyoutuberpolyglot 5 лет назад

      @@SimpleEnglishVideos Yes I know
      Can You explain what this word means? I see the interrogation icon?
      Can you explain what this word mean? Why is it wrong?
      He means, but what does he mean? not what does he means?
      That is why I asked about the verb to mean.
      Why do you write Can you explain what this word means?
      Is this a question. If I see the symbol? For me means a question.
      Vicky, I know the rule, but here I don't understand why you wrote means instead of mean.
      Hang on a second- Could you explain- that is a question- What this word means- this part of the sentence is no longer an interrogative sentence.
