Something I learned just this week. When the little boy smiled at Cyclops in the train station, the extras didn't know what movie they were in but the kid was a huge Xman fan and when he saw the visor he knew it was Xmen.
The professor couldn't detect mystique because everyone at the school where mutants if one where human he would be able to sense them. He's not constantly in people heads because he thinks it's an invasion of privacy.
Slight correction. Most telepaths in the Marvel universe maintain telepathic shields to protect them from the thoughts and feelings of others. If they don't, they can go mad because over time, they lose track of which thoughts and feelings are their own. This is extra bad because an insane telepath can cause a lot of suffering for a lot of people. So Xavier maintains those shields unless he has a specific reason to lower them.

@Dayspring "art imitates life". Human storytelling is one giant allegory. If someone isn't relaying a historical event (or news report), you're looking at or reading an allegory one way or another. At the very least, the consumer turns it into one. And as far as j.r.r. Tolkien is concerned, the One Ring was the New Testament concept of sin, I don't care what he try to say afterward.
@Dayspring People misinterpret Tolkien's allegory statement all the time. Tolkien hates obvious allegory like Aslan being Jesus in Narnia. You LITERALLY cannot write a story without allegory. Our stories are based on our experiences. Our characters are based on people we know. Even Tolkien's writings had allegory whether intentional or unintentional
Unlike the Avengers, the X-Men were always symbolic of marginalized people. The question posed over and over, which is the main bone of contention between Eric and Charles, is: if you are marginalized and oppressed, but have gifts and abilities that could help or hurt those privileged people who oppress you, what do you do?
No, not "always symbolic". For the first year or so, the X-Men were portrayed as standard superheroes who sometimes worked directly with the FBI. It was the reader response which shifted the portrayal of the mutants.
The real magic of these movies and what elevated them beyond simple superhero movies (at least until X3) was the relationship and acting skills of Stewart and McKellen. The fact that they brought him back and will be bringing Logan back as well speaks volumes.

"This Marvel, but *not* MCU?" It's *supposed* to all be in the same universe; it is in the comics... BUT, Marvel was close to bankruptcy in the 90's and to stay afloat they had to sell off the movie rights to some of their most popular characters. So Spiderman ended up at Sony, Hulk at Universal, X-Men and Daredevil landed at Fox. Fox started the X-Men franchise first out of all of those. (The *First* 90's Marvel movie was "Blade" which kicked off Marvel's road to recovery and eventually forming their own studio) HOWEVER (Slight spoiler) now that Disney has acquired both Marvel studios and Fox, there are plans to bring them all together. In the latest MCU movies and in the Deadpool movies, the idea of time travel enables branching, paralel universes is being utilized to bring the various seperate universes together, so you *will* see some of these characters eventually in MCU.

Love yhat you acknowledged Jean Grey as being awesome right away; I remember being a kid and people saying she wasn't that cool. Even the adults would talk about Wolverine and Storm mostly.
Thing is, Marvel superheroes have always been shades of grey, with a lot of them being conflicted antiheroes (like Tony Stark/Iron Man, or Magneto, or Deadpool). For the longest time, DC was the universe of larger-than-life superheroes (like Superman or the Flash) in bright primary colour spandex costumes. Only with the modern "Man of Steel/Justice League" Snyderverse movies did DC suddenly turn all their heroes into brooding characters in nearly black costumes.

Magneto doesn't just bend metal; there is magnetism in every atom in existence. He can fine-tune his powers to manipulate that magnetism. The air itself has traces of lead and mercury, even planet Earth has magnetic waves coming off of it. Magneto can do whatever he wants.
I am kind of surprised you didn't recognize Sir Ian McKellen as Eric Lensher/Magneto...he was also Gandalf in 'Lord of the Rings'. Of the bad guys, the Brotherhood of Mutants, my favorite is Mystique (aka Blue Girl). In the initial films, she is played by Rebecca Romijn, a former supermodel turned actress. She is now on 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' as Number One aka Commander Una Chin-Riley of the U.S.S. Enterprise. With 'X-Men: First Class', which takes place before these films...Mystique aka Raven Darkholme is played by Jennifer Lawrence...but Romijn made appearances as an older Raven. Before playing Wolverine, Hugh Jackman was in London in a major production of Rodger and Hammerstein's 'Oklahoma!', which can be found on video. He played the lead, Curly, and sang "Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin'" among other songs. He has been Wolverine in 9 films total (one as a cameo, and one as archival footage included). He had, initially, hung up the claws with 'Logan' in 2017...but recently announced he will play Wolverine again in 'Deadpool 3'. Originally, Ryan Reynolds appeared in 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' as Wade Wilson...and that was his first Deadpool (but they did the character really odd at the end.). You haven't seen the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy yet...the actor playing Toad is Ray Park, who appears in 'Episode I - The Phantom Menace' as Darth Maul, who is awesome!!! The part of the fight with Storm, where he kicks the metal bar out of the elevator doors and twirls it...that is a very Darth Maul move! The streak of white in Rogue's hair is from the comics. She has always had it, and in the cartoon from the 90s, she had a huge amount of red hair and a streak of white. The actress playing Rogue is Anna Paquin, who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for 'The Piano' when she was 11 years old (the second youngest Oscar winner in history and it was her film debut). She is also really well known for her role as Sookie Stackhouse in the HBO series 'True Blood'. Onscreen, Sir Patrick Stewart (Professor Charles Xavier) and Sir Ian McKellan (Eric Lensher/Magneto) are enemies...OFFSCREEN, the two men have become the most amazing BFFs. They are both Shakespearean actors and legends in that field but they never worked together until this film. Their friendship is so close that when Stewart married his current wife, McKellen officiated.
This movie is pretty much what spawned off a LOT of superhero movies which followed and ultimately led to creation of MCU. This was definitely a seminal movie in the pantheon of the superhero genre in movies. Rogue has that hairstyle because when she absorbed Magneto's powers it was THAT intense it caused her to have a stroke and that's what gave her the blonde hair in front. (It happens in real life, look it up). In the comics she always had that hair style, so this was a neat way of the movies giving her a reason why she has her hair like that. In my own mind, at least, it still rates as a really great superhero movie. Definitely see X-Men 2 next.... X-Men 3 didn't do so well at the box office and wasn't very well recieved, but if you're loving the franchise, you should still see it.
This is the beginning, and it was a great beginning. There are several substories and layers. For the time it was good. Wolverine was never much of a team player. There were parts you might not get without some of the background, but it does stand up by itself. For example, Magneto controls magnetic fields... so put a steel plate in your shoe he can lift you or fly.
X-Men; first class, is where the two of you go to see who it all began. But, before you guys do that, you have to watch X2. X2 is my personal favorite in these older movies, "First Class" is my favorite X-Men movie, followed by, X-Men, Days Of Future Past. I have to say, X2 is up there.
Charles Xavier is based off Martin Luther kingJr ,and Erik Magnus Lensher Maximoff is based on Malcom X .Stan Lee is a master artist may the gods give him rest now Rest in power Stan The Man Lee
It's confusing but as of recently these movies kinda *are connected* now lol. Disney bought Fox, who previously owned Xmen. And some of these characters returned/will return in the MCU
Before the mcu this movie made people realize that despite the outlandish powers, adult stories could be told, via these characters. Something us comic book nerds already knew...
The story of how Charles Xavier was paralyzed gets shown in X-Men: First Class.. Also, the helmet that Magneto wears, blocks telepathic powers.. that's why he wears it..
Love some awesome Marvel movies like this that came before the MCU like X-Men, Spider-Man, and some others. Much more fresh stuff, hard to predict, cool to watch
The X-Men comic line was launched in the late 60’s. Even though it was a fictional story about fictional characters the underlying story arc was about racism and racial issues. This was a opportunity to address social issues and social commentary with out the problems that could have happened to Marvel for doing so.
Charles wouldn't have sacrificed that one man just to kill magneto. Because as soon as magneto died that bullet would have went right through the man's head. Plus Charles can't control magneto directly because of that helmet he's wearing. Also magneto doesn't just control metal, his power is magnetism which can f*** with a lot of stuff including making himself levitate. But of course in these movies they don't really show the full extent of his powers, they mostly just do him metal bending
Some trivia. Xavier is loosely based on MLK Jr and Magneto (Erik) Malcom X. They both want what’s best for them but take completely opposite directions doing it.
I hope when you have time that you do them all or can fit them in. This is the first installment which lays the foundation. The following X2 and First Class and the Dark Phoenix are my favorites. The interesting thing about this or any movie is that when the movies are released, they are at the height of their popularity. When these movies are reacted to many years later, unfortunately you only get a glimpse of the impact they had. Xmen is my favorite of all the series, but I enjoy Marvel as well. Thanks for reacting to this movie!
X-Men, X2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand are undeniably fantastic. X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future-Past, and Logan are great prequels and sequels (one is two-in-one! Lol) The first three will always be the true core of the franchise.
In the beginning where you see that character fighting with wolverine. His name is sabertooth. Hammond wolverine used to be friends that were as close as brothers. The one that said humans evolve into us that is magneto. He's the one that bent the fence in the beginning.
Rogue's power is a curse, from her perspective. While she can (temporarily) copy superpowers, even multiple ones at the same time, her touch is especially dangerous to non-mutants and she can never physically _touch_ people, making her very lonely. Worse, Rogue not only absorbs power(s), she also absorbs _memories_ from her victims... and she can't control that part, she gets other people's memories (potentially traumatic or psychopathic) in her head whether she wants them or not.
the next one, X2, is one of the best superhero films ever made... the rest of the franchise has some hits and misses but also one or two masterpieces so definitely continue even through the not so great ones. you'll love 99% of them lol
100% agree. The Fox mutant franchise has some great hits and absolute cringe inducing misses. But I think because this couple has *no* comic book background, they have little to no expectations to be disappointed? The stories will have to stand on their own, so it will be interesting to see!
If you like Patrick Stewart who played Xavier, you might like him in a BBC mini-series: I, Claudius. He played a supporting role when he was younger. It's about a sickly boy who stutters and who limps in the time of the Roman Empire. He eventually became Emperor due to a unique set of circumstances.
X-Men. Absolutely love this franchise. Stan Lee created such an amazing universe. I Watched the cartoons in the 80s and 90s, read the comics played the games. The characters and multi branching story arcs are superb. I can't say enough good things. Also, I know I'm probably in the minority. I was more on magneto side than professor x. However, I still like both of them. Good choice of actors for both their roles as well!!
01:48 - 01:57 "This seems like an unprecedented time." -That is NOT a good reason to embrace fascism. It is truly frightening that a scene depicting the Holocaust occurred just SECONDS before you embraced the registration of a class of people by their government. It is sad that even after the horrors and inhumanity of WWII, fascism still goes seemingly unrecognized; and is still so easily accepted by so many people.
Don’t expect perfect continuity between these movies, timeline’s all over the place in the X-Men franchise. Definitely looking forward to the Logan and Xmen First Class reactions most, by far the best movies from the franchise.
Rouge’s hair in the comics was more fluffy and fuller with a white stripe down the center sort of an 80’s hairstyle. For the movie it was done in more of a realistic style because hairstyles change over time so the 80’s style would have been to outdated for a 90’s movie.
Would love to see you guys also react to the old Blade movies, as Blade is also a Marvel character and at least the first two movies are really well done, the third is a guilty pleasure of mine but is fine for what it is. Plus you can get a glimpse of the setting prior to the new MCU Blade movie.

Reactors never notice anything
The white stripe in the hair - first time I seen it was Yvonne De Carlo, the wife of Hermann Munster in The Munsters from the 50's.
The actor who plays Toad is Ray Park....he was Darth Maul in StarWars ep1 the phantom menace....just look at how he spins that pole😉
Great reaction team, can't wait for you to watching the full series of all these films to really understand the characters and see what happens 😀
so cool to watch you guys enjoying a movie we love it
Welcome to X-Men. X marks the spot.
Lol hahahahahahaha!!!!!!
good one
I think my favorite part of seeing reactors watching is where Wolverine stabs "Storm" and it turns out to be Mystique. The shock gets me every time.
We love the X-men series. Also, you'll get a backstory to the wheelchair in a later X-men reboot movie.
Love and peace you two.
Fun fact: Edward Norton was considered to play Wolverine. Norton ended up being cast as Bruce Banner from The Incredible Hulk(2008).
" Camouflage Girl"😂😊 Mystique is her name she's gray with red hair in the cartoons ( I grew up in the 90s) yeah she's cool.
I do not know if you know it but in the role of the toad it is Ray Park that we will see later in the skin of Darkmaul
Before the mcu this movie made people realize that despite the outlandish powers, adult stories could be told, via these characters. Something us comic book nerds already knew...
Hey you too! Toad was pretty cool, did you recognize Ray Park? He played Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode 1
The story of how Charles Xavier was paralyzed gets shown in X-Men: First Class..
Also, the helmet that Magneto wears, blocks telepathic powers.. that's why he wears it..
Y’all will like this one!
Love some awesome Marvel movies like this that came before the MCU like X-Men, Spider-Man, and some others. Much more fresh stuff, hard to predict, cool to watch
It’s not connected yet with Avengers but they plan to connect it all in the future. Keep watching each one gets better.
The X-Men comic line was launched in the late 60’s. Even though it was a fictional story about fictional characters the underlying story arc was about racism and racial issues. This was a opportunity to address social issues and social commentary with out the problems that could have happened to Marvel for doing so.
You should continue this series! Next X-men movie please
Magneto doesn't actually fly, he just manipulates the metal components of his uniform
Described by someone as "RSC acting on sets made by Blue Peter."
The Xmen franchise is my favorite sm I dont know many people who are into it or know of it outside of the other marvel universe
You love this one trust me you gonna love the 2nd .....X-Men 2 United
And "make it so number 1" yes professor X
01:48 - 01:57 "This seems like an unprecedented time." -That is NOT a good reason to embrace fascism. It is truly frightening that a scene depicting the Holocaust occurred just SECONDS before you embraced the registration of a class of people by their government. It is sad that even after the horrors and inhumanity of WWII, fascism still goes seemingly unrecognized; and is still so easily accepted by so many people.
Patrick Stewart (Prof. X) and Ian McKellen (Magneto) have actually been friends since they were their teens.
Professor X taught Magneto how to hone his skills.
Would love to see you guys also react to the old Blade movies, as Blade is also a Marvel character and at least the first two movies are really well done, the third is a guilty pleasure of mine but is fine for what it is. Plus you can get a glimpse of the setting prior to the new MCU Blade movie.
Wasn’t expecting this
X-Men has always been deep. The original comics in the 60’s were about civil rights.
Love the new haircut
Dude😉👌🏻🇬🇧
