This is the story of Lawrence Bittaker and his accomplice Roy Norris, two convicted serial murderers and rapists who in 1979 murdered and raped five teenage girls over a period of five months in southern California. They would later become known as the "Tool Box Killers".
Although Norris was already a convicted rapist when they first met, Bittaker was by far the worst of the two. Norris was offered a plea deal, to testify against Lawrence Bittaker in return for the death penalty being taken off the table. He accepted and did testify.
The crimes these two individuals committed truly shook the nation, making headlines all across the United States. At the time Bittaker was called "worse than Manson" by the prosecutor, Stephen Kay and this film gives us a unique glimpse into the meaning behind those words as we revisit the crimes, arrest, sentencing and appeals of Bittaker and Norris through lengthy interviews with officers and prosecutor Stephen Kay, as well as access to files, court documents and photographs.
Lawrence Bittaker was sentenced back in 1981 and he resided on death row in San Quentin State Prison, a maximum-security correctional facility for men, for more than 30 years, due to his endless appeals in the federal court system. This documentary not only reveals the ins and outs of this case but also examines the death penalty itself and the process involved showing us exactly what happens to California's most condemned and dangerous men.
Although some argue that the death penalty has long been out of fashion, there is a place for it as long as men like Lawrence Bittaker walk the Earth. Bittaker died while incarcerated on death row at San Quentin State Prison on December 13, 2019, at the age of 79. His death was reported as being due to natural causes. Norris died while still incarcerated early the following year.

I remember this case and the time it was happening. Just out of the "be free" generation. Kids trusted randomly. Teens especially. It's a damn raw deal that Bittaker died in prison. (They both did, I know.) If there were EVER a paramount case for putting the death penalty to use, this was absolutely it. California dropped the ball.... hard. In cases of torture, rape, and murder, ESPECIALLY that of children, final justice SHOULD be brutal and swift. I don't give a rat's a$$ if Lethal Injection causes the convicted killee pain. It will still always be more merciful than what they did to those girls.
Get your CCW, go to the range, practice often and with intent. Take you're own life seriously, because someone bent on ending you surely won't. Men and women alike, please stay safe. Europe doesn’t have a death penalty it’s a much safer place.
      The death penalty is inhumane..
America needs to focus on why so many of these monsters are being created, the death penalty isn’t a deterrent.
Obviously there is something going on with not tackling children’s welfare., to produce so many predators & serial killers.
Norway has an extremely kind prison service based in socialising criminals.
The death provides psychopaths with a hobby, causing mischief with the Law.
In the U.K. the dangerous personality disorders are sent to Broadmoad Hospital
They should be locked up for life + denied these appeals and civil cases .
America locks up more of its citizens than any other country - ironically it’s the world leader for murder & crime.
It’s a very dangerous country, with harsh justice & rubbish provision to protect children from violent abusive childhoods, which produce another yet another generation of psychopaths.
Hitting a child is illegal in most of Europe, there are health visitors who monitor pre-school babies and six monthly GP checks.. consequently less psychopathy.
No system is perfect, the effective system would be Norway, Holland, Sweden, Denmark etc. The liberal countries are safe to grow up in, crime is low. The governments who invest in child welfare’s reep the reward of a more humane society.
Hopefully this disgusting man will die very soon, but another one will replace him..
If the role mode is a murderous one , population will murderous people. It’s a double standard.

Absolutely tragic. It’s always so difficult to understand how we as a human race can do what we do to other human beings. I hope they are angels now and can forever exist in a blissful state. God rest their sweet souls.

I doubt if anyone remember how on the News in the 60s thru the 80s they used to have on local news a little side note on the number of missing kids and it mattered then because they would show new pictures each day that the number changed, this needs to happen again so people will start realizing that kids are important for society ...

Looks like the court system is a joke, and no justice served for the victims. The legal system needs to be accountable and an inquiry into the case of those accountable.

By far the most sadistic serial killer I’ve ever read about. Bittaker was the mastermind behind it all, although Norris is just as evil as he tried to minimize his role as he thought he could be released on parole. Hell has a special place for these two sick demented individuals.

This was really a travesty in my opinion!
And, to call a moratorium on the death penalty to evaluate whether the lethal injection caused pain, regarding this case, I'd say, Who cares!
While I no longer in the death penalty, as there has been so much corruption in the system and many innocent incarcerated, these killers should have been executed!
It's actually Scriptural for corporate punishment to be enacted swiftly, especially at the shedding of innocent blood because it defiles the land and brings a curse upon the nation (s)! Purge out the evil immediately!🩸🙏🏼
This case was absolutely horrific! 😔💔😥

Moreover, to allow them to hitchhike is beyond stupidity
I would’ve driven my girls to the beach and then I would stay at the beach until I brought them back. You don’t leave girls alone like that especially beautiful little blonde haired girls.
