  • In this episode I discuss Karate Tournaments. Should Karate be a sport? I have no problem with Karate as a sport. We have to standardize scoring. The unorganized nature of these competitions turns some people off.

Yes!! Competing is so much more about who is friends with whom.

I was forced to do tournaments growing up and hated it. I had many winnings but I still did not enjoy them. All sport karate tournaments. Now as an instructor I do not force any of my students to compete. I focus on self defense, preservation of traditional kata and their bunkai, which flows into the self defense. I do however give support to any students who are interested in a tournament. Awesome podcast!

In my experience sportsmanship is not getting upset when you lose and not gloating when you win. And of course in a binary game there is a loser and a winner and you learn from both in ever evolving ways.
