It is often asked whether katas are useful for fighting technique. As this video shows, they absolutely are, but only if you learn the bunkai. If you just rehearse the movements without learning the meaning (as happens all too often), there's no hope of applying the techniques in a fight.

This English translation is inaccurate. For example, at (7:28) Kuba sensei said "Otherwise this form(kata) doesn't make sense." In here "kata" means "form 型", not "shoulder 肩" . Same pronunciation, but differetn words. Sorry, I made a mistake. Not exactly the same. The accent of form型(kata) is on the second sylable and the one of shoulder肩(kata) is on the first sylable.

I know the translation is not the best and most accurate, but it still helps people who don't speak Japanese a lot to understand what the video is talking about...

@@RadekScuri Oh, I see. This is automatic translation, isn’t it? That's why it's weird. Sorry, I didn't mean to hurt your feeling.

Sensei Kuba is an amazing teacher as well as amazing man. I have worked out with him a number of times. I learn a lot. Your English is better than my Japanese or my Hogan. Good work

Any single technique can fail..even a punch, if someone blocks it. It doesn’t mean it has no utility. He admitted it could turn into a test of strength..

When you hear "shoulder", generally think "kata"

The translation makes little sense. Please erase it and just leave it in Japanese.

Just because your saw it on a video doesn't mean you can execute the techniques

Techniques in karate are learned by doing, not by seeing them in a video.

Water in Karate. Fire in karate. Both are held in a cup. Karate, in a cup? Hmm
Karate is meant to disarm the responsibilities of humanity. That is a cup which is said to hold both fire and water. The fire of the humanities. The water of life? Karate without a cup? Animals and cups? Karate comes with a cup? For the fire and water? Of life and society.

The other side of karate is always the same. Different from my yoga practice, sometimes, or basically all the time , the other side of the yoga practice is different. I made a Style, Dojo Ghan. All dojos are made of one half circle and the student uses the body to fulfill the other half. All dojos bow. Yes; this is true. All dojos bow; that is the half circle I tell you about. Open mouth & Loose fist. Dojo Ghan. After all have opened mouths; fists begin to loosen all over. This; Dojo Ghan. The space is already full for the students; if needed. Always half full; is the cup, yes the cup is always half full.
