- we feature the traditional Japanese martial art of jodo, in which competing opponents wield a long wooden staff.
We also take an in-depth look into the intricate techniques of this sport, focusing on two martial artists from the UK who are captivated by the 400 year-old discipline.
Miyamoto Musashi learned to respect the Jo after he fought a sword duel to a draw against an expert in the 4' hardwood Jo. . . .Also Musashi himself killed a samuarai swordsman using only a wooden boken during a duel. . . . Hardwood Jo and hardwood Boken are lethal and parries are not met against the edge of an opponent's blade but rather against the flat side of their blade or against their hands/wrists. The Jo jutsu expert in a duel weilds the superior weapon, as proven by the Jo jutsu master's defeat of the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi.
It's sad that you guys didn't try and learn more about this amazing budo before showcasing it. Start video at 5:33 as only the Jo players in this video know what they are talking about.
Who are their teachers? Past the 5 min mark it gets good.
Strange thing people don't remember the police uses Jo. Weird.
This video appears to have been cut short.
"...jodo, in which competing opponents wield a long wooden staff." Jodo isn't competitive, and it's not common for both partners to wield a jo. Generally one will have a jo, and the other will have a sword or sword substitute like a bokken. Aikijo will sometimes have both partners using a jo for jo awase and kumi jo, but Aikijo is not Jodo.
+SeikiBrian The script was not written by anyone with any knowledge of jodo. We (I'm the British guy) weren't consulted much...they just sent us a bunch of questions, we answered and then they wrote it up and by the time we got to see it it was "too late" to change it.
+Loki Welcome to journalism, right? I thought the overly perky narration completely undermined the dignity of the demonstrations as well, that was pretty annoying, I kept thinking "for god's sake, this is not a baseball game"!
Indeed! Every time it's mentioned, we cringe and apologise profusely :-P at least there was no narration during the embu...
+Loki Well if it helps, I was considering going to a Kenjutsu club locally where the junior of the two instructors teaches Jodo in the hour before the main class and I think, ignoring the patronising presentation, this video has convinced me to put in the extra hour a week!
+Alex Green -- Good luck in your pursuit. The ZNKR Jodo is based heavily on Shindo Muso Ryu Jodo; I think you'll find it an enjoyable and enriching practice.
Is Jodo an individual martial art or a team based?
most of it requires an opponent with a sword, I learnt Jodo as a pre-requisite to Aikido
Why did they invite to Jimmy Fallon, i say, Nicholas Pettas?
This announcer was disgraceful, sounded like he was mocking Jodo as he was describing it. The martial arts are not a joke, there is respect in them because thousands have died from them, especially in japan. If your going to be a cocky announcer then don't mock martial arts, go mock politicians or something.
He's not mocking it at all.
Jodo isnt a fucking martial art, jojutsu is, jodo is trash thats for spectators, the same as kendo
@@JaydonVRC kendo is a sport, like fencing.
@@verybarebones That what I meant, its a trash spectator sport. I'm extremely against martial arts in a sports scene,
@@JaydonVRC why? Its not a martial art, it's a sport. Just because at some point in history it had a martial base doesn't mean it still is. Do you also hate on Olympic wrestling or javelin throw?
Jodo and Jojutsu are not the same thing. Seitei Jodo is far far removed from its roots in Koryu Budo of Shinto Muso Ryu, despite Shimizu Sensei being the caretaker of SMR and organizing the Seitei syllabus. Shimizu Sensei orhanizwd the Seitei syllabus for people who had no experience with the jo nor the sword
Eindeutig zu langsam😐

Fighting a samurai with a stick...lol.. no chance...the katana will cut both the stick and the opponent...
+Siddharth 1912 Music Katana ≠ lightsaber.
Sam Barris
Lol.. lightsaber is next level shit...But katana can easily cut a wooden sword.
+Siddharth 1912 Music I think you've watched too many movies. Why don't you go find a nice, seasoned white oak staff then see how easily you can whack your way through it with a sword. You'll get through eventually, but it might be a lot harder than you think, and I expect you'll have done serious damage to your sword in the process. Also, watch how they meet the sword. They're not taking it on the edge, but from the side and the back of the blade.
The bo and jo were used back when samurai were still toting swords around. Do you really think that would have been the case if they were that flimsy?
I have used a real katana before . a strong blow can crack open a steel helmet. The damage done depends on the person holding the katana, the more relaxed you hands are while striking the more lethal the blow.I know what am I talking about. A vertical blow on a wooden sword will cut it like butter...A katanas true potential can only be realised in the hands of a skilled swordsman. It's blade can be damaged by cutting through wood.but in real life a ..wooden sword has no change against real samurai sword.
LIGHTSABER>>>>KATANA....Nothing can beat the lightsaber.
+Siddharth 1912 Music there is no way in hell, you can easily cut a Jō staff with a Katana. Just because you can "crack" a helmet doesnt mean you can slice through wood. The best you can get is to get your Katana stuck in the wood or splinter it a little.
