      @darrenjpeters 4 года назад +44

      McGrath could bowl faster than 131kph, around 140kph flat out, and he could also take it away from the batsman, not just nip it in. He worked out pretty early on that he wasn't, and was never going to be, fast enough to just blast blokes out of there with sheer pace, so he adjusted his game plan. What a lot of people fail to realize, is that if you bowl as fast as you can all the time two things happen, firstly you can't bowl as accurately, and second, the batsman gets used to the pace, and batting becomes easier for him. If you bowl within yourself, you then have an extra variation up your sleeve. You have a quicker ball, as well as a slower ball. I used to practice bowling yorkers absolutely flat out, so that when I attempted to surprise a batsman with my quicker delivery, it would hopefully get me a wicket. McGrath is a lot taller than me, so he was able to generate extra bounce when he really bent his back, another thing that can often get you a wicket. Bowling within yourself most of the time is also easier on your body. You can bowl longer spells, and get less injuries.

    • @almac9203
      @almac9203 4 года назад +31

      @@darrenjpeters I have seen McGrath get wickets bowling 128 kmh. McGrath said in an interview that bounce is more important than pace. Just bowl the ball perfect line and length with some nipping in and some staying straight is all you need. He had a better career than Gillespie and Lee both of whom were much faster and moved the ball more.

    As a pommie and a teenager watching the 05 ashes, I truly realised the greatness of McGrath. Unfaltering line and length and had every top batsman in the world in trouble. Combined with Warney, the most devastating 1-2 combo from a bowling pair I've ever witnessed and think I will ever witness . Whilst England may have won that ashes much to my excitement, that Australian team captivated me in a way a team has never since. Genuine world class players and hall of famers in nearly every position. RIP the GOAT bowler and competitor of all time in my eyes. Wish Warney was still here to take in the latest ashes test but the good die young. He'll be up there parting the clouds with that leg spin!
