McGrath was unique because, like Malcolm Marshall before him, he always got the top of the order. It's all well and good wasting tail-enders, but McGrath destroyed the established batsmen. Great bowler.
Sometimes I wonder how he takes so many wickets not putting a lot of energy in the run up not pushing it hard in the delivery just a gentle pace of 130-132 kph and still getting a lot of wickets
Just look at the ball in his hands , so small . he is tall and fit. Perfect Rhythmic action for his body structure. He doesn't need to put much energy into a delivery. With that smooth action ,when it comes out of his hands it is easily 130-135 kph. He could still generate more pace, with a little more effort. But instead he puts that effort on unwavering line and length. For example , he spots a crack on a wicket , which generates bounce and troubles batsmen. He would bowl six deliveries bang on a crack. He would take an over or two to figure out uncomfortable length to batsmen on a particular pitch. He would bowl , that length consistently with slight variations all day. Batsmen are often frustrated , tempted or confused and play a wrong shot. Also with that height , he gets a natural bounce. Batsmen have got better of him in one dayers sometimes , but in tests it was hard to dominate him.

I never watched him live but just by looking at some of the videos, don’t think this current era will or can face someone like him. Impossible to score runs.
McGrath was an absolute freak. Undoubtably the best test match seam bowler ever. He wasn’t particularly fast nor did he swing the ball a heck of a lot either but his accuracy was incredible, would hit around the top of off stump over and over and over again. That England team went into that ashes series in searing form, the previous few summers they seemed to win easily and Andrew Flintoff usually took man of the series. In this match the look on Vaughan and Flintoff’s faces after their dismissal summed it all up tho. They knew they were now in with a serious opponent and the standard of play during the rest of that series was incredible from both sides. Great memories for me, it was a great summer that year. Probably one of the best summers of sport ever along with the summer of Euro 96.

At the crease now is test debutant Kevin Pietersen and he's joined by wicketkeeper Gerant Jones, and Pietersen has looked cool, from the off.
