I never step into this messy arena, partly because there has always been many very talented and inspiring contenders, in fact too many to name even just a few. But if I had to pick one myself, it would be Guthrie. The amount of sheer magic this wizard can produce, in so many styles, to me is unmatched. Long live King Guthrie !!

No one will ever truly sound like those guys, but Guthrie is way more steeped in the vocabulary needed for every style of music, from traditional to avant garde.
Well - he was already a wizard in the early 2000. As a passionate non musician music lover, I believe he did not change too much since his early days. Maybe a more competent person from the Essex Recording Studios can confirm or contradict (both very welcomed by me) my humble assessment. Guthrie the Blonde -> Guthrie the Gray -> Guthrie the White always a wizard, a true star !
There must be more credit for Zak at this point. He is just as genius as his counterpart. He, the saxophone player, has one major advantage: His instrument never sounds dull on a crappy recording mic. Or maybe it's the camera angle. The sax just sounds much better. I am melting away anyway listening to them. Thanks a ton!
And Guthrie, the guitar player, has several major advantage: He can play chords and rhythm, can squeeze out different sounds out of his instrument fith pickups selectors, pedals and fingers and never sounds like 90s porn music.
29:35 The way he goes into those smooth chords at the end and then, spontaneously finishes the song with The Simpsons' "Gracie Films" outro jingle, is absolutely insane. That one moment encapsulates the absolute musical brilliance and joy in the man's playing. He can just randomly think of something and perfectly weave it into what he's doing. A whole another level.
theres a concert of him in korea you can find here on youtube. On his song Ner Ner he busts out the slide. It's probably my favorite guthrie moment of all time. and that's saying a lot. go check it out.
(I think I) I know what you mean, but maybe "surpass" is not entirely the right word: Guthrie is actually perfectly able to put his extraordinary (if not stellar...) technical abiliities into the service of making inspired and „musical“ music. As there are so many technically brilliant players nowadays who just remain on that "technical" level and have a very hard time to become really musical (in the true sense of that word) players, I think Guthrie’s different quality is quite obvious here.
I can't listen to technical players. Seems they always focus on technique, and skip the musicianship. Guthrie (and Zak) are musicians 1st. Doesn't matter your taste. The music is what matters. This matters.
He just hears a single one in his head before he replicates it perfectly. How is this wonderful creative imagination even humanly possible, what a player!
Let me rephrase. Calling him anything less than world-class would reflect on that person's ignorance. His technical abilities are a given and indisputable, what he does with them sets him worlds apart from the rest. (RIP Allen H. and Shawn L.)
Guthrie just might be the most complete guitar player that ever touched the instrument. I really do love instrumental rock and follow the best guitar players but Guthrie, for sometime now, is my personal favourite. You feel that it really doesn't matter what you throw at him, he just nails it in the mos awesome way possible. Truly one of the greats.
A true master of guitar. Can't think of anyone who has the pure amount of control over the notes they play like Guthrie. Zak is an absolute joy to listen to as well, what an experience it must of been to witness this live!
I'd like to throw Allen Holdsworth into the mix as well-no idea where he exactly originated from. When discussing genius nationalism and/or tribalism seems to be completely moot and without merit.
Oh how I wish I would’ve been there to witness this… *I’m not typically a fan of people recording during a performance but thank God this was recorded. If this was recorded and filmed for DVD I would buy it right now with no hesitation.
With all the not music related madness, most countries/societies/humanity had to deal with, Mr. Gowan shines like a bright light of hope. He indeed seems to be like a fusion of all the giants that came before him, and I hope he will get the attention of a much wider and bigger audience, not just musicians. The Aristocrats are great, but any band that is in need of a studio and/or live Guitar player should try to book him or at least have him on top of their wish list. As the era of 1970 - 2010 were the years of Allan H. (RIP) the 2000-20xx should be declared the years of maestro GG.

@@EssexRecordingStudios I have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in the left hand now for 2 months, can play but fingers are weak, going for a n EMG nerve test friday and doctor next wednesday, I tune a whole octave low anyways so I dont think I got it from playing guitar only....and my wrists are straight when I play: just found some exercises in the net: DEFINitely dont want an operation at this point!!!! ( nerves and blood vesseles and tendons and scar tissue and healing time: soo many things can go and stay wrong! Ill ask the doc about the exercises and wont overdo them... phew just when I found my sound/sounds..., cheers anyway!🤔🤔

Goddamn, Guthrie comes in sounding like horn player. What a player! He has always been one of a kind and tastefully melodic with any amount of facility available to him. Amazing.
I love his Jon Mclaughlin isms. He sometime repeats spiky lines which is a McLaughlin device all day long. He has far more fluidity than any other guitarist I've heard. Sounds a bit like all my fusion heroes but a perfect amalgam of them all with his own style liberally applied on top. Top stuff. Luv and Peace.
