I got to hang out with Guthrie last week at the Petrucci camp. What a fantastic guy! He is music personified. He's an amazing teacher as well, and the way he communicates his ideas and concepts is just one of a kind. He had this impromptu 2am jam with a french horn player in the hotel lobby that just made my year. Such a beautiful moment. You could really tell that playing music makes him happy, and he in turn makes everyone around him happy. Such an inspiration.

Cap: do you remember a first band? Guthrie: I remember a first gig, when I was 5... Cap: aw you're kidding me. Guthrie: don't be too impressed, you weren't there... LOLOLOLOL Love Guthrie.
Daniel Verberne I was scrolling through comments to see if anyone said the same thing! Totally agree 100%. There’s just something about him..he has that “thing”
I know, right ?!! his voice and demeanor are so soothing. And he was studying English at Oxford. It'd be nice for him to read musician's autobiographies :)
Guthrie always sounds like he’s speaking directly to whoever’s listening, regardless of his current audience. It feels like he’s speaking directly to me in a language I can understand.
The term "guitar god" tends to get thrown around very loosely these days, however, I think Guthrie is genuinely a musical god, a guitar genius. He literally can adapt to any style of playing, at any speed. Not only does he adapt, but he excels and dominates any of those styles. I particularly love when he transitions from jazzy licks, to a tasty blues lick :). So glad musicians like him exist. Gives me so much inspiration to keep practicing.
Personally I don't think he's one of the greats, he's too caught up in the twiddly twiddly type of thing, a desire to impress with playing fast, which let's be honest, by the beginning of the nineties had run its course, everybody and their dog had covered this ground already.
He has said before that he tries to sing the solo (in his head) a millisecond before he plays the notes. That way he knows how it will sounds. That's what you're seeing
Same here... I don't know how many times... But as far as I can remember, it's probably been 2-3 years, I watch this when I'm having a meal for 15-20 minutes, at least once or twice every week.
It's not even so much that clearly he is one of the best guitar players on earth, but just the sheer intelligence of the man is overwhelming. It's like listening to a Cambridge/Oxford professor talk, you can tell he's much more than just a guitar player. Incredible.
My thought exactly. There are guitarists who give you that "Hey, look at me, check out how awesome my chops are" Yngwie And then there's Guthrie, who's like a child on the playground, all "Weehee, this is so much fun!.." Can't fake that, can't beat that
The aliens are getting better at teaching us music. We didn't understand Allan Holdsworth when they sent him, but this second prototype is much more relatable.
@@andrewkramer4021 Shawn Lane makes more sense to me than Holdsworth. He is just from some upside down world where he discovered the key of H and plays the mixogobbledegook scale for the mortals that came to see him
Yessss finally .. Always thought allan holdsworth, shawn lane and guthrie were 3 one of a kind virtuosos resembling each other in certain way .. Allan paved the way shawn lane adopted it and finally guthrie took over the helm... Good to know i always thought i was the only one😁
I remember growing up in the early 90's and my dad buying the Guitar Techniques magazine where a young Guthrie Govan used to write tutorials on metal/fusion/jazz. I never would've thought that he'd grow up to become such an accomplished guitarist. I wish my dad was still alive to see you now, Mr. Govan.
"If you imagine that there are 80 people on stage and some of them are playing delicate orchestral instruments, it is NOT the time to unleash the Stack of Doom." I love this guy lol
My early career followed such a similar trajectory it actually freaks me out a bit. The only differences are my first performance I was 6, not 5, and I got offered a place at Oxford to do English Literature, but took a "year out" to go to the Guitar Institute (all the while knowing I didn't want a year out, I wanted a lifetime out.) I totally agree about technique and theory as well: You can't know too much, or too little. If you have knowledge and skill, but can't express yourself emotionally, that's not *because* you have knowledge and skill. They're totally separate things. Great interview. :)
when you rearrange the letters in Guthrie Govan, you get "Guitar Jesus." You might have to change some letters, too, but you can make it happen if you really believe.
Guthries language is so refined. He's got all the cliche licks and phrases from every genre imaginable thoroughly nailed down and integrates them flawlessly and tastefully with his own vocabulary.
You had me at, “…almost religious ceremony where they put the circle of petroleum byproducts on the turntable..” Most amazing player and conversationalist. Now his guitar phrasing makes more sense with thoughts like that. It just comes out of his fingers. True artist.
In rock perhaps yes, it is becoming increasingly more and more rare as hordes of new players that can't really play yet have "mastered" a technique or two and feel the need to put it on full display because in reality it's all they got. It's sad. However in classical and jazz it's rarely if ever even spoken about because it's rarely if ever an issue. People have been playing fast melodic lines for centuries, it's about time the rock community catches up! Rock on Guthrie!
Marty Friedman, Wes Hauch. Joe Satriani, Marco Sfogli, John Petrucci, Claudio Pietronik, Jason Becker... even Jeff Loomis or Andy James would have something to say about that! I think rock has a ton of melodic shredders, and a lot of fretboard wankers too...
He studied English in college, before going full send with guitar. So he could have been an English teacher, writer, poet, something like that. He has said that he was torn between the 2, until he chose guitar
monsarad888 I never ever heard sbdy else playing this 'fitting' and precise in every damn style. Every note is in place exactly how and where it should be. Absolutely stunning.
Sameer Anwar Your enjoying yourself man with the gift God gave you. Don't let these monster players intimidate you .. I did when I was a young player and it screwed me up, use to go to NAMM shows and was intimidated to the point of wanting to just quit every year after the show. Pickup what you can from these guys, but most importantly work on developing your own style whilst enjoying the journey.
I want to remind you that, incredible though GG is, almost every amazing player in the world can't do what he does. Gilmour, May, Knopfler, Clapton, Page, Young, Bonamassa . . . and then moving into the specifically technical players there's Vai, Malmsteen, Batio, Johnson perhaps . . . you don't _need_ to be able to do what GG does to absolutely kick ass.
Don't compare your ability to one of the best guitarists on the earth, 99% of us aren't incredible like guthrie, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't have fun and play
PLEASE Lee, is there a way to have a biweekly or monthly segment with Guthrie? Perhaps a Victory or Charvel sponsored segment, to bring GG to the Anderton's TV family. Visit him at gigs if need be. He's a credit to the human race and deserves an outlet to share his philosophy on music and life in general. You could call it, "The World According To Guthrie." If anyone can do it, you can.
Reach a much larger audience? Than playing with The Aristocrats, former Steven Wilson guitarist, and now working with Hanz friggin Zimmer? Yeah, I'm pretty sure he's not gonna starve if he isn't featured on a RUclips channel with a slightly above average viewer base every now and then.
All good points, but I think he could strike a balance between constant touring and taking the time to share his wisdom with the world via RUclips, as long as it's lucrative. Granted, there is no rush like performing for thousands of people (I've had that chance on occasion) but I would wager that his videos reach more folks in more countries than any tour could (look at the Views for this video!) Consider his age as well - he has a lot of touring years left but it doesn't hurt for him to star thinking about his 50's and 60's. YT is much easier on the muscles and joints than touring:)
I feel like recently I have rediscovered guitar and I can’t get enough of any videos with Guthrie. I’ve always known he’s been amazing but never really checked out his stuff (How stupid right?!?) He’s become one of my guitar idols. Hi philosophy and approach is just incredible. Thank you for the inspiration and also amazing interview Lee 🙌
agreed...he seems like a really expressive and articulate person. those qualities seem to lend themselves to the majority of my fav players these days.
Guthrie is that once in several generations guitarist that transcends everything. He's above, he's beyond..and all we mere mortals can do is sit back, enjoy, learn and embrace the awe. Humble in the face of his greatness, majestic in spite of his humility. Just glad to be alive to experience his genius
Oh! Lord I can only gaze with awe. The way he phrased that solo in the beginning just out of thin air is just incredible! This man is the most technically sound and accomplished guitarist of all time (IMO). The amount of knowledge he has and the way he interprets with such articulation is such a bliss. He is so very talented and a master of the instrument that he holds and yet he is insanely humble. The way he explains with such class and distinction is truly praiseworthy. The amount of respect that I hold towards him as a musician is something which cannot be measured. He is a living legend!
I was there, too. ;) Have you also had trouble getting into the venue? When we were let in, the Aristocrats were already playing for 15 minutes or so... The band for which I was there especially... -.-
Yeah, I had the same problem. But hey, better than not hearing them at all, right? I was there for them as well. I left for the balcony as soon as Vai came on stage and returned for Satriani.
Guthrie will always be my favourite guitarist. Not just because he plays extremely well, but also because he's a genuinely kind soul. I had the pleasure of seeing him a few years back at a masterclass or whatever you called it and it was great experience, best 15 bucks I've ever spent
Nothing I love more than ridiculously talented people with no ego. Guthrie is one cool cat, and you as well Captain. Keep up the great work. I'm a music teacher to kids 1st to 5th grade, and we have to create that next generation of amazing musicians. Rock on dudes!
Way too much by The Captain. I think he needs to be mostly quiet when his interviewee is talking; showing affirmation in more subtle ways, like nodding his head and smiling.
This is the first time I'm really getting to see a bit more about Guthrie as a person, and I gotta say he seems like such a down-to-earth, genuinely nice guy! Glad to know there's still some musicians these days that my kids can look up to.
HOLY!!!!! It happened. Captain meets Guthrie Almighty. I was waiting for it ever since you've started doing these interviews. I will watch this all the way to the end, and then do it three more times. Perhaps even more :D
Guthrie is a totally complete man when he's got the guitar in his hand. That way he communicates his heart so flawlessly, like an excited child...like a teacher, like a maestro...and an absolute master of the game. It;s ALWAYS a pleasure watching him speak as much as play. Everything he says holds much value and the way his eyes lighten up during some phrases makes you realise that it all comes from the heart. Guthrie is universal and one of a kind. Cheers n God bless!!!!!
I think Guthrie is a great example of how music theory and feel can make an amazing thing when combined the right way. When I was in school theory was something that we just /had to know/ and nobody could tell us why. I never bothered with it, rebelled against it in a way, and I was just happy playing. Fast forward some years and now the things I want to play have overtaken my theory knowledge and I can no longer keep up with it. My mind wants to play phrases and my theory knowledge has no idea what they are or how to create them. If only music teachers could be like Guthrie! Also, great interviewing by Mr. Captain, more like a hangout then the usual "tell us this, this and this"!
Guthrie is the only guitar hero I can actually imagine spending an evening in the pub having a pint with him, such a lovely down to Earth guy (if anybody hasn't had the pleasure of hearing Jason Becker's Triumphant Hearts album, as well as being an astonishing feat of overcoming obstacles on Jason's part and should be a part of everybody's music collection, Guthrie contributes a solo on Rivers of Longing which is mindblowing)
Completely justified and understandable, but I couldn't help noticing Captain's face as Guthrie was playing his Les Paul. I swear I could hear Captain thinking "Wow. I had no idea that guitar could do that!" With all due respect to The Captain of course! :) Brilliant work from Cap on the interview as well - respectful and suitably in awe of Guthrie's prowess without being gushy. Govan is indeed the real deal...
@Renato: Indeed, so true. Guthrie is for sure one of those players where the magic truly is in his hands [and his head]. The gear he uses pretty much doesn't matter at all :)
Guthrie is amazing. I'm so glad that I finally found out about this guy. I've been following him for a month or so, and am incredibly intrigued and impressed by his style. What a tour de force.
Every guitarist who's had a much a better guitarist to borrow and play their guitar knows the "I didn't know it could sound like that" feeling that Lee is experiencing at around 42:09
Karl-Anthony Towns I think you don't know your gear can sound like that because it takes another's fingers. Lee can sound great, but it's not the same because yeah, sometimes a portion (about 10-20%) of your tone is in the fingers.
@@lmcf_gtr you're absolutely right. There are certain things that only years of playing can teach you. Thats one of them. The power to play the exact same notes as someone else in a COMPLETELY different way is right in your fingers.
I got the impression Lee was thinking the opposite? as guthrie wasn't playing anything particularly inspiring given the quality of guitar he had at his disposal, in the right hands those gibsons sing.
This video makes me so happy. Excellent interview, though I wish Cap would have let Sir Govan speak a bit more :) Hearing him speak soothes my soul and brings me a sense of reassurance.
46:40 - 46:50 Who else thinks Guthrie is talking about Vai here? After seeing clips of Guthrie performing together with Vai in bootcamps and in the G3 jams, I find myself really disliking Vai's unmusicianship towards Guthrie. Vai always seems to be cutting into Guthrie's solos or not responding to Guthrie's musical calls and cues in a friendly way. Moreover, Vai always needs to be the center of attention on stage. Guthrie is normally at the back or at the side just smiling away attentively - musically communicating with nods, smiles and eye-contact while Vai is making melodramatic facial expressions while playing the same lydian licks we've been hearing for decades.
This is Govan you're talking about Danu. The guy doesn't need silliness to try to make some flashy point. The guy is arguably the best guitarist ever when it comes to musicality and fluidity in his playing. He's astounding.
I'm a fan of all the G3 guitarists..they've each just their own personality and mindsets--Guthrie is very much Humanistic, Steve is Existentialist, Joe also seems Humanistic in nature. It's also good to be keen on remembering the eras they were playing in--Steve was in the 80's and 90's, where showmanship was on par (and expected) when playing live. Joe was in that era too, but he was more reserved in that respect. Guthrie is obviously calmer and more music-focused. Those work expectations (ethics??) can be hard to break, possibly. Steve was one of the guitarists that initially inspired me to play 7-string. I got the chance to meet him back in November. In person, he's very much a music dork, and a nice guy honestly. On stage (where he's known for his quirks), he DOES get into that musician / showman persona. He's used to playing solo gigs with his band. Admittedly, I enjoy watching Steve play, because it's entertainment and guitar playing. I enjoy watching and listening to Guthrie play, because he is calmer and more personable. I feel like I could jam with Guthrie and it would be more mutual and active learning, whereas if I jammed with Steve, I might be more of in a passive place, you know?
I agree, man. Americanized music has definitely become (or has always been about), "bigger and better," which, to me loses its authenticity. I personally prefer music with that different focus, as you said. A few of my favourite Vai songs were his earlier ones, with more defined melodies, like, "For the Love of God," (cliche, I know, but it represents a noticeably more melodic focus on tones, techniques, and substance.), "Tender Surrender," and a few other pieces that have more consistency--like "Creamsicle Sunset," "Windows to the Soul," "Whispering a Prayer," and "Boston Rain Melody." Admittedly, the newer songs seem more stream-of-consciousness and don't have as much in terms of definition. Every player has licks and riffs that they compose and return to or recycle.
There are many gifted guitar players out there, some popular some relatively unknown but three who stand out in my mind, whose skills baffle me, leave me in awe. They are Alan Holdsworth rip, Shawn Lane rip and Guthrie Govan.
John Marquez I agree and think that's the beauty of RUclips. There's no competition. It's not 2 channels fighting for a time slot. Everyone can watch anything anytime they want. And since there's no competition, channels are free to support and recommend each other :)
I was so happy to discover Guthrie Govan - he has to be one of the most articulate musicians I have ever seen. Not only does he play like a true virtuoso, he can explain what it is he IS doing and is so darn articulate throughout the entire process. Oh, were there more people out there like him ..... thanks so much for posting this video!
Chris Bibby He is so right though. Buying a high end, mechanical timepiece is more about the heritage, the craftsmanship and the overall feeling than it is "telling the time."
I thought Guthrie was great until I heard him play on "The Raven That Refused To Sing." Then I KNEW he was great. My favorite playing by him isn't when he's ripping massively fast leads, but rather the slower stuff where his playing is just dripping with feel. Such a great player.
It's interesting how his speaking patterns and vocabulary is so... "similar" to how he plays guitar. Very eloquent, intelligent, and very much screams GUTHRIE with every sound.
Singing your licks is a great way to find new licks and improve your phrasing. I don't always remember to do it, but it definitely makes my guitar tell better stories when I do. Another good example is George Benson, he sang every single notes in the mic as he was soloing. what a legend.
I could watch this five times straight. Insanely great interview, interviewer & interviewee. Notice how when he picks up the Les Paul he starts playing blues licks in A? We're all the same, really, but then, not... ;-)
I forget exactly what it's called but there's a channel on youtube with a bunch of videos of Guthrie playing to some backing tracks and he uses a bunch of different guitars than his sig like a Les Paul, 335, and maybe a strat if I remember correctly.
Holy shit, Guthrie is such an intelligent and enlightened guy. I just heard some great ideas and thoughts about music, career and art in this interview. Great video!
Guthrie is like Paulo Gilberto, you can tell he REALLY loves what he's doing. And he doesn't take himself too seriously, and with hair like that you can't lose :) You can tell he really doesn't like talking about himself, he's awkward (as most of us are) and it's quite humbling. He does his talking with his axe. Also as a guitar player it's hard not to be in awe of Guthrie, he's just so fucking good.
Wow... Im a musician who grew up in England in the 70s too! Reaaly rang true - all the stuff the guys said.... brill interviewer and interviewee! Thanks!
Guthrie is that boy in school, who says he didn't prepare for the test and gets the best marks. LOL

Lungsy1988 so true man
He can adapts to Derek Trucks style or Quinn Sullivan.
Personally I don't think he's one of the greats, he's too caught up in the twiddly twiddly type of thing, a desire to impress with playing fast, which let's be honest, by the beginning of the nineties had run its course, everybody and their dog had covered this ground already.

Incredible.
He read english at Oxford university for while so his descriptive vernacular fits his educational background.
As soon as Guthrie started to play, i started to smile.
That's how you know someone's really good at what is doin'!
My thought exactly. There are guitarists who give you that "Hey, look at me, check out how awesome my chops are" Yngwie And then there's Guthrie, who's like a child on the playground, all "Weehee, this is so much fun!.."

Govan.

My early career followed such a similar trajectory it actually freaks me out a bit. The only differences are my first performance I was 6, not 5, and I got offered a place at Oxford to do English Literature, but took a "year out" to go to the Guitar Institute (all the while knowing I didn't want a year out, I wanted a lifetime out.)
I totally agree about technique and theory as well: You can't know too much, or too little. If you have knowledge and skill, but can't express yourself emotionally, that's not *because* you have knowledge and skill. They're totally separate things.

Guthries language is so refined. He's got all the cliche licks and phrases from every genre imaginable thoroughly nailed down and integrates them flawlessly and tastefully with his own vocabulary.
You had me at, “…almost religious ceremony where they put the circle of petroleum byproducts on the turntable..”
Most amazing player and conversationalist. Now his guitar phrasing makes more sense with thoughts like that. It just comes out of his fingers. True artist.
Its rare to hear a guitarist play that fast and still sound tasteful
As Paul Gilbert said 'Guthrie gives shred a good name'.
Pat Metheny ? no?
MrGuitarMadness95 depends on what you define as "tasteful". I can't get into Yngwie, Satch or the like, but I like Guthrie and Paul Gilbert.

Tom Hammerton true, but he'd reach a much larger audience via a popular RUclips channel😉.
welcome to GGTV the new channel broadcasting only Lord govans whims ... id pay for that
Reach a much larger audience? Than playing with The Aristocrats, former Steven Wilson guitarist, and now working with Hanz friggin Zimmer? Yeah, I'm pretty sure he's not gonna starve if he isn't featured on a RUclips channel with a slightly above average viewer base every now and then.
intrsoul I think John Irving might take umbridge at that title!

Guthrie is the only guitar hero I can actually imagine spending an evening in the pub having a pint with him, such a lovely down to Earth guy (if anybody hasn't had the pleasure of hearing Jason Becker's Triumphant Hearts album, as well as being an astonishing feat of overcoming obstacles on Jason's part and should be a part of everybody's music collection, Guthrie contributes a solo on Rivers of Longing which is mindblowing)
which minute is his solo?
That could have been 4 hours and I'd still want more. What a dude
Completely justified and understandable, but I couldn't help noticing Captain's face as Guthrie was playing his Les Paul. I swear I could hear Captain thinking "Wow. I had no idea that guitar could do that!"
With all due respect to The Captain of course! :)
Brilliant work from Cap on the interview as well - respectful and suitably in awe of Guthrie's prowess without being gushy.
Govan is indeed the real deal...
I would probably feel the same even if Govan picked up a 70$ guitar and played it to be honest. :D
Haha! That's great! "Govanned!" How about a slight alteration? "Govan'd"? :)
@Renato: Indeed, so true. Guthrie is for sure one of those players where the magic truly is in his hands [and his head]. The gear he uses pretty much doesn't matter at all :)

Who else thinks Guthrie is talking about Vai here?
He's astounding.
he was saying he doesn't NEED it to be that not that he can't or won't ;)
PrettyWhiteForAFlyGuy lol!!!! "Sweep picking stunts" which Vai sucks at anyway- if he's referring to him
I'm a fan of all the G3 guitarists..they've each just their own personality and mindsets--Guthrie is very much Humanistic, Steve is Existentialist, Joe also seems Humanistic in nature.
This definitely gave me my Guthrie fix for the week i love the guy and his music so much thank you for this interview!
There are many gifted guitar players out there, some popular some relatively unknown but three who stand out in my mind, whose skills baffle me, leave me in awe. They are Alan Holdsworth rip, Shawn Lane rip and Guthrie Govan.
Can we please get Guthrie on That Pedal Show? That would be awesome!
Guthrie on a gut-wrenchingly inferior show to AndertonsTV? I'll pass.
I enjoy both and feel no need to judge one superior and the other inferior.
John Marquez I agree and think that's the beauty of RUclips. There's no competition. It's not 2 channels fighting for a time slot. Everyone can watch anything anytime they want. And since there's no competition, channels are free to support and recommend each other :)
John Marquez I would rather see that pedal on The Guthrie show.

Nothing wrong with wanting a nice watch. It's a piece of history and it will stay in your family for generations if you don't lose it.
this made me so happy, seeing my favorite guitar player just chilling and talking guitar stuff, in my opinion one of the best vids on youtube
I thought Guthrie was great until I heard him play on "The Raven That Refused To Sing." Then I KNEW he was great. My favorite playing by him isn't when he's ripping massively fast leads, but rather the slower stuff where his playing is just dripping with feel. Such a great player.
It's rare to love something as much as Guthrie loves playing guitar. That's the difference.
It's interesting how his speaking patterns and vocabulary is so... "similar" to how he plays guitar. Very eloquent, intelligent, and very much screams GUTHRIE with every sound.
This is the BEST in depth interview I gave EVER seen. TOTAL respect to you BOTH.
He's mouthing his guitar licks. The music is IN him.......
Shawn Lane had a similar way of doing it. You can tell both men had/have the same thing in them.
Singing your licks is a great way to find new licks and improve your phrasing. I don't always remember to do it, but it definitely makes my guitar tell better stories when I do. Another good example is George Benson, he sang every single notes in the mic as he was soloing. what a legend.
A lot of jazz musicians do that to various degrees.
I could watch this five times straight. Insanely great interview, interviewer & interviewee.
