    I want everyone to observerve Manginis smile and small jump at 7:47 when he and Guthrie improvised those syncopated notes together on the spot. Absolutely fucking brilliant. They obviously found a musical connection, which is something of Guthries speciality; And, may I add, part of why the Aristocrats are so fantastic. They actually PLAY together. Speaking through their respective instruments like were they voices. Which they are.... Speaking and playing.
    I will hopefully meet Guthrie again at Freak Guitar Camp, where I met him back in 2010. Truly brilliant to be in the presence of such a man. Socially shy and modest to a fault.. Come to think of it, I should really try to find videos of that somewhere on some hard drive.

      The only guitarists I know that when soloing somehow never run out of ideas, possess their own language that take you somewhere others simply cannot get their minds to go. The streams of continuous brilliace switching chord changes like swallows seamlessly glide change of direction in air, gibbons fly through trees at speeds cars get pulled over and impounded, or dolphins shimmy on by like its not water. Allan Holdsworth, Shawn Lane, Bryan Baker, Eef Alber's, Sylvan Luc and Guthrie Govan indeed are top tier. Most others all have a stick then go and fingertap in predictable commonality

    • @zx7-rr486
      @zx7-rr486 Год назад +1

      @@johndkastel7972 If you're talking about improvising, which I take from your comment you are, then I agree. Guthrie Govan just flows in a seemingly unpredictable way. I am sure if I sat down and analysed his licks, I'll bet that he actually does do a lot of particular finger movements that are his favourites, but the way he ties it together is incredibly impressive, and of course he has the most amazing dexterity I have ever seen in guitarist. But when it comes to composing, melody, riffs, tone etc. etc. it's hard to say Guthrie is better than any of the other great players out there. Brian May, Eddie Van Halen, and Govan?? Who's written the best music, inspired the most guitarists, achieved the best tones??

      Malik nobody improvised in that section of the song , and yes , there a big difference in each one of them , nobody played the same , but extra points to Guthrie that improvised in all those chords and you need to know harmony to improvise in that part , you cannot improvise in that section using one scale , you can use arpeggios , but that chord progression is chords borrowed from different scales so you need to use different scales in most of them .

    • @suba474

      I think over the years, Petrucci has lost some of what made him one of my favorite guitarists. He used to write some beautiful solos, but he's become much more of a "shredder first" type of guy lately and dream theater as a whole has lost what made them great. Scenes from a memory was probably his best as far as musicality. Beautiful writing, beautiful songs and beautiful solos. Six Degrees also had some really nice, non shredder solos in it, but it was probably a bit "out there" as far as songs go, for most people. I personally loved it.

His improvising is a lot better than anyone on the stage because of his versatility and his a ability to play any genre of music. So you need to ignore the tone for some time, ok. • @Elemy69
      @Elemy69 3 года назад +7

      It's because Guthrie doesn't restricts his playing to one music genre. He is a very curious musician so he used to practice literally everything he could hear, whether it be rock, pop, funk, or even jazz. Not to say the other guitarists don't do that but to a lesser extent, they'd rather narrow themselves to metal, and focus their practice on fast notes and shredding. Guthrie studied a lot of jazz which is the best genre of music for improvisation

    • @palopo-t3v
      @palopo-t3v 3 года назад +1

      @@s1iznc1d34 That's an acquired taste. Some people, as they grow up, usually steer away from the ultra distorted processed sound that doesn't sound like a guitar anymore. It's a less commercial sound for sure. Take for example Petrucci's tone. It used to be amazing during the first DT records when he was with Ibanez. Now it's just too much, but it sells better. They need to sell music to kids who are still in the extreme metal stage, not to their old fans who are likely to have moved on to modern jazz. Guthrie's tone is just more mature. Less effects and more wood (if that's even a thing).

    Definitely a fan of John’s composing and playing.
    But when it comes to jamming I can’t help but just bring outstanded by Guthrie’s mastery.

    I was going to say "This is all your fault, Yngwie!" And then Guthrie took a solo...

      It's probably not toooo much of a stretch to say that Guthrie is mainly responsible for turning young rock guitarists onto improvisation.

      Guthrie says in his interviews yngwie is big influence on him. I can see he shreds like Yngwie. More emotional and melodic. I think you should blame more Paul Gilbert'ish players.

      I was implying that GG was by far the best here. His solos are so much more musical...

    god damn, amazing playing by every one. This also reminded me how great of a jam drummer Mangini is. Technical stuff aside, the way he catches the blazing fast guitar leads that he's hearing for the first time is amazing. Esp during Guthrie's solo. This reminded me of his DT audition when he was smashing the s*** out of the drums. love it!

      I love when he’s throwing in those counter rhythms all over the place, and you can see that the players really dig on it.
