    It was a very intimate setting, after NAMM type of event with maybe 30+ people. I was the guy who shot the footage never intending for it to be seen by anyone but me at the time. I was in Tone Merchants shopping for an amp and Ed Yoon said there was a guy coming to play a concert in a few days so I asked him if I could use my new Sony camcorder there and he said sure. Later on I gave Ed the tapes and he gave me some guitar chords for the trade, he then sold copies at the store for a while. I feel privileged to have helped out Ed since the footage he got didn’t come out right. That night Ed gave Guthrie a rad Suhr guitar and he’s been supportive of Guthrie’s career it seems. I wish Tone Merchants was still around but I heard Ed went to join John Suhr.

      Not sure, but this was in Orange County near the Orange Circle. I used a Sony Vh C mini camcorder and a RadioShack lavalier mic that shared the same capsule as the Earthworks 30 mic. I bought 2 on clearance for 12 dollars each and wired them for stereo, I’m still amazed by their performance. Mix magazine had an article about 10 best kept secret mics and that’s how I knew about them. Keep in mind I didn’t know who Guthrie was at the time and I never intended the footage to be seen by anyone but me so that’s why there are crazy zooms and pans. I still have the master copies and I should try to remaster for better quality now that all my computer software is so advanced since then.

    Most people fail to realize just how raw Guthrie is when he plays live. No tech, no roadie, no nothing. He's doing 10x the work he needs to be doing because he CAN. Imagine him with a show production like Steve Vai or Satriani? (I'm not comparing them). I'd love to see him on a G3 with those guys.

    A lot of negative comments. Ppl are really resistant for some reason. Sounds like jealousy to me. Guthrie is undeniably one of the worlds best electric players... He's still young and still getting better! Crazy. He will leave a mark in the world and set a new example for playing the electric guitar. He already has... And he does play really fast... And it's awesome chops. But he also plays some of the most creative melodies I have ever heard for guitar. Great Compositions.

    • @dibaliba

      @@sbagga95 that's not true, the lick is originally designed to bend in the 22th fret of high E, if you have seen the transcribed score from , he just want to put some funny and dramatic effect in his playing. What the hell are you on about? Guthrie's solos respect the harmonic changes and modulations more than a lot of fusion guitarists I know of. Plus, his solos often add even more to the harmony, which means that every time he improvises over a certain harmonic progression, you could be getting a completely different overall harmonic structure. If that isn't a sign of an excellent jazz musician, I don't know what is.

    Virtuoso lead playing is some of my very favorite music. I have a massive collection of it and listen to it religiously.
    I love all of those guys, I think they are all unique and play with more feel than they are often given credit for by normie pentatonic players that worship Guitar World Magazine guitarists.
    However, Guthrie has always stood out among that crowd for me. He really is something special in a world of special and incredibly talented people. His phrasing is always in the pocket, sweet and smooth as silk. His tone is perfect to me. He writes such beautiful and powerful music. I love the guy.

      I'm somewhat more in the same world of guitar and music than I was when I wrote you that question.
      As much as I love Guthrie, I prefer his backing track vids over his actual compositions. For me they are rather boring, and just don't really do it for me. As a player, I will watch everything he does though, because he is of course out of this world.
      For me Shawn Lane is outstanding. I love his playing, but his music just hits me deep inside. I'm currently looking for more music and playing that gives me what Shawn does.
      I have to admit, I don't kow much of anything from Greg Howe, or JOey Tafolla, but I will check them both out for sure. Any recommendations of where to start?
      I am also blown away by Matteo Mancuso. He is another Guthrie in my opinion. Loved his recent blues shuffle in G. WOW!!

    There is no way to separate technique and "feeling". They develop and come together. Besides, "feeling" belongs to the listener as much as it belongs to the artist. All you can say is you can't feel the stuff you wish to feel. Many of us feels fine when Gutrie bringss on his "arsenal" and thrills us with speed, accuracy, amazing tonality and pure music played from the heart.

If you spend your time practicing alternate picking faster and faster - that is what you'll be good at. If you spend your time practicing bending and slow phrasing because your heart is broken ;) - you'll develop feeling. Ideally, you find the time for both...

      +Saqib Saqib Tough to say it's better for me, certainly different. I saw the aristocrats this past summer and it was mind expanding. But I'd definitely like to see more stuff from this band.

    • @b-sideplank
      @b-sideplank 8 лет назад

      Kingding6 I'm sure it was overwhelming. I can't imagine why it won't be.
      I suppose the reason I like this lineup so much is because Pete (the drummer) creates a lots and lots of room for Guthrie's phrases and exploding licks to breath and reach the listeners without distraction. Yet anyone who knows anything about drumming will know that this guy is not short of embellishment skills and crazy fills. Whereas, Marco, despite, or perhaps because, of his monstrous skills, falls prey to not being able to employ them more wisely. That is a rather odd thing to say about an accomplish and world class musician and again this is not judgmental and I'm not trying to be an asshole. Also watching live I will probably forget all of these and be mesmerized by their performance, may be even be convinced that Marco is better. But I do feel that Marco's drum fills take away from the guitar parts and the whole composition by extension. Even though Marco's drum parts are extremely fun and very enjoyable as standalone drumming chops.

    • @Kingding6
      @Kingding6 8 лет назад

      +Saqib Saqib I see where you're coming from. I'm a drummer myself and while obviously I appreciate Marco's ability, he's never been one of my favourite drummers, precisely for the reason you mentioned. It's all a matter of taste isn't it, I personally love pete's drumming. However, like you said, you absolutely would get swept away by these guys at their show. Also, something that is clear in some of their vids on youtube, but is abundantly clear live, is their chemistry with one another, I've seen a lot of jazz and fusion concerts and i've never witnessed the level of interplay these guys demonstrate. It's almost psychic.

    Amazing to think that in 2022, some 17 years after this was filmed, I'm watching Guthrie play and I can see him playing *exactly* the way he plays now. Are there any techniques or abilities he has now that he was lacking here? This is far from a criticism by the way, it's only my observation that when you're as amazing as he is, it's hard to tell if he's getting better!

    • @2earache
      @2earache 2 года назад

      Jonny Jabster……..as long as any and every musician pursues the goal of becoming a more and more accomplished player, there is no end to his or her achievements. As a musician myself, I was given the narrative which serves me in great stead to this day. That is that I just cannot afford to sit on my laurels and consider that I’ve reached the peak of my playing prowess. If it is the desire for any musician to reach for the stars, then so be it. Always surround yourself with others as good as and certainly better than you believe are your own abilities. Becoming better is a never-ending process whether it be through technique, all forms of melody and harmony, dynamics, texture and form. Music in itself is a constantly developing art form and it is incumbent for musicians to forever keep their hands and head in touch whether they be at the level of the beginner or that of the virtuoso. I hope that what I’ve mentioned helps to address your query!

    I just realized 2:40 is basically the song Bad Asteroids of The Aristocrats (his current group with Marco Minneman and Bryan Beller) :D

    Anyone knows who that sax player is? The amount and the quality of the noises he makes are spectacular!

    Have you listened to Guthrie much? Last time I saw him I called out Giant Steps and he played it. Hit the changes, too. The sax player is also extremely proficient and is hitting the changes as he pleases. There is a difference between guessing and playing outside and neither of these men are guessing. Listen more closely I guess? Cheers.

    It's an amazing guitar player! Note: He almost does not use the little finger.

      He's referred to the pinky as 'Mother Nature's cruel joke' or something along those lines.
      It makes sense actually, considering how skilled he is at tapping, there's no pattern or line that would require the pinky that he couldn't just use tapping for instead.
