Canon EOS R6 Real World Review: The Ultimate Hybrid Mirrorless Camera?!

  • This is the Real World Review of the Canon EOS R6. After using this camera for a few months, I have to say it's a fantastic option from Canon for photographers looking to get into the mirrorless camera world. Where the EOS R5 may be too expensive for some, the R6 falls into a much better price point...even if it's still a few hundred more then I would like. The one thing the EOS R system needs, third party glass and more affordable RF lenses.

Thumbs up to Stephen and Dan for their hard work on filming and editing this bad boy. It takes a ton of time to create a review like this. There are multiple days of learning and testing the camera. The Real World Shooting day, a few days of pickups and beauty shots back at the studio and finally...weeks of editing. Thanks guys!!!

I already own the camera but tend to still learn a few things when watching these types of videos. I also see what other lenses can do with this camera. I still have EF glass but hope to get my first RF lens shortly but I’m still on the fence as to which one I should start with. I currently have the EF 24-70mm F4 but don’t know if I should just get the RF 2.8 version or just keep the F4 and go with wider or telephoto.....I’m a mess and can’t decide. All of my stuff is for personal use of family but family events (when we are able to have them lol) are pretty much all indoors with crappy lighting and the toddlers don’t particularly like flash going off all the time. We also have smaller/normal sized houses and the 50mm is too tight. This comment wasn’t supposed to be long or even have a question in it lol but that’s what it turned in to. Great video

I'm one of the photographers at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire. Unfortunately I missed you that day as with Covid I was not there everyday this past year. Currently I shoot with a 6D Mark II, but as soon as I can I plan on upgrading to the R6. The eye af alone makes it worth it, no more shooting fights where the subject moves out of range of the focusing points. Great review!!! I shared this with a lot of the performers who are in the video.

I feel they really overspecced this body for the price. It's an animal for events and even sports for half the cost of a 1DXiii

In a lot of ways the R6 / R5 are interchangeable, and both are great upgrades, I was considering the R6 as a second body, but went with a second R5, as I wanted the same files coming off both bodies - If you are happy with 20 megapixels then get the R6... if you see the R5 as an upgrade, then maybe save the extra $$$ for the R5, and wait for a decent sale

I have both the R5 and R6, and both are outstanding. R6 can do most everything the R5 can do, save for the higher resolution and 8K video. The other differences are all extremely minor. If you need 45MP, the R5 is great. If you don't (and most people don't), the R6 will cover you for essentially anything.

Same here. I sold my 5D3 and got the R6, and sold my 5D4 and got the R5. I shoot a lot of dance photography and you have to shoot wide because you never know when an arm or veil will fly up (and out of frame). So I shoot wide and crop in post which works out great for my situation. So 45MP is not overkill. And using Canon's cRAW format, my images are SMALLER than those shot on my 5D4 (on disk)... 40MB vs 20MB.

Excellent review. I finally bought an R6 about 3 weeks ago now. Upgrading from a 5D Mk III and EOS R. I thought I wanted the R5 and kept being torn between having to deal with 45 megapixels all the time and not having them, and cost. I finally resigned myself to, "Well, you can always sell it and buy the R5 if you have to." I won't have to. I wish I had pulled the trigger 4-5 months ago. Now I'm mad at myself for waiting. This is an excellent camera. By far and away the best I have ever owned. And I've owned a lot.

Hi Jared, I am switching from an old full frame DSLR and an APC camera. For what I do those cameras have served me well, no complaints. However, I am moving toward some new technology and have been on the fence between the EOS R or R6 mostly because of price. Man you really broke down the features of the R6, this was a great video...very informative. I am an older photographer, almost 60, and my eyes aren't what they used to be, so I rely on the auto focus more as I get older. The tracking feature of the R6 make it worth the $$ for me, as I don't have to worry about soft images (hate it). Thank you again for such an informative and entertaining camera review. Fro, this was a comprehensive ass review! Great portraits, and great example photos. Video and review were very well organized and delivered. It was nice to be a part of the fair with you and part of your R6 experience👌. I was engaged the entire time. If there was third party glass, I'd probably have switched BACK to canon from sony...but like you said, that third party glass offers nice inexpensive options. Nice work dude

FWIW since I bought an R6 in September, I haven't touched my 7D Mark II at all. The R6 is so much better in every way, from shutter burst to video to eye AF to IBIS to low light performance (better than my 5D Mark IV!), even image quality.

I'm gonna be completely real with you I bought the R6 and later ended up selling it and buying the R5 thinking I'd end up using the extra features. I'm honesty sitting here now watching this review because the last two weeks I kind of regretted it (even though I've had the R5 for a few months now) because the R6 was seriously THAT good and just for a much better price and is EXTREMELY practical. I have an RF70200 2.8 and at the time was using an EF100400 4.5-5.6. I sold the 100400 and with some extra money got a mk1 400 2.8 and all the images I had using any of those lenses were amazing. Upgrading to the R5 the difference is honestly so damn miniscule and 8k being extremely impractical until the next few years the R6 feels like a very good pickup. Hell I may actually end up selling the R5 back and getting the R6 again I was THAT confident with the camera. I think people are really undervaluing just how good the R6 is because the R5 exists. I can definitely vouch with confidence that this camera is very good and well worth the money.

@@kpopfanphotos Appreciate the details! I will be getting one when I see it for $200 off again soon. Then will be selling the 7dmkii and Tamron 7-200 2.8 to get the new RF 70-200. I use that lens more than anything so figure would make sense to get the native version. Just hoping my two sigma lenses perform alright converted. Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM and a sigma 150-600. I do worry a small amount about not being able to crop in on things as much on a R6 vs R5 but I know I'll be able to crop just as much if not more than I do now. Losing the 1.6x crop though might make a small difference. Take care!

Been in the Canon camp since the ole silver 300D. Currently running 7DMK2 to which I'm still impressed with even though it's getting long in the tooth. I was dead set on the R5 as I wanted the MP's and felt the R6 was going to be a lateral from the 7DMK2, but as I continue to watch all of these R6 reviews, I think the R6 is the right one for me. The fact that they share the same AF system really raised the R6 up. I shoot a lot of low light pictures and while the R5 I think would work, I now feel the R6 will work better. If I had the coin, the R3 would be my choice, hands down, which is another reason I've decided to go with the R6. If 24MP isn't an issue why should 20 be? I finally figured it out, it isn't. Thanks for the great review!

Fantastic video! I currently own a 6D Mark II and an M50...I think I'll be selling the 6D after I get through some home renovations this summer to pick up an R6, that Animal Eye AF is a killer. Lack of focus tracking performance is my biggest gripe with the 6D and seeing the quality you're able to pull even with it being "only" 20mp has really put my fears at ease there. Thanks!

I'm new to photography but didn't want something I would get bored with quickly. I made the right choice thanks to your help. Key I found is you got to frame the shot. Currently I just have the 24-105 F4 lens and the new RF 50. Looking to get a telephoto. Thinking about the 100-500 but price is expensive.
