This is as close to a Real World Review of the NEW Canon EOS R3 you're going to get for a little while. There's a lot more we will be doing with this camera when we get a production unit. The truth of the matter is, this is an amazing mirrorless camera. Yes it's "only" 24 megapixels and YES, i've been spoiled by the R5 and a1. But this camera packs a punch and for the sports shooters and photojournalists who will be getting them, they will LOVE it.

Thumbs up for a HANDS ON PREVIEW!!!!!
Let’s go !
Holy shhhhhhh
Protect the positive squad, press that button
Preview longer than most people do the review. Awesome stuff. Thanks Jared.
Love the new technologies going into this camera, like AF selection by looking at the subject, Backlit sensor etc. … proves my investment in RF Glass right! Those technologies will trickle down eventually and the lenses will still be very good :) So for me sticking with my basic R body, investing in good glass and having a great outlook for new bodies if I ever feel the urge :)
So now we know that the Eye autofocus is not a gimmick, it's gonna be game changing for sure
Yeah I'm only disappointed by the really poor battery life, I thought the bigger battery would mean like 3x the amount of usage or frames but it's not. It's equal to or worse than the Nikon Z camera's and Sony camera's CIPA numbers. Also the mechanical shutter of 12fps is disappointing since the 1Dx Mark III can do 16fps!
@@patricksmith2553 ........ WHY are we using mechanical shutters?!? Seriously...it's 2021. You missed the point of the video! haha
Imagine how many hundreds of times a sports photographer has to manually move their focus points to acquire a subject in a sea of football players. Now imagine they can just look at the one they want and start tracking. It's this kind of improvement that you can't quantify on spec sheets.
Didn't we know that since many years ;)? Canon is really late again here.
@@Lofote ..?!? Wtf? Lol how?

Finally another camera I could not afford..
Same here
Well do you really need it? I have a7m3 but mostly I am having fun with a canon m50 m2 :)
@@photoenduro it's almost like asking do you really need a lambo? No I don't, but I want it.. Lol
@@photoenduro You can't drop the "Well do you really need it?" While having an a7 iii
That's like saying "I know I have a Bugatti Veyron but do you really need the Bugatti Chiron?"
@@photoenduro I'm still shooting with the 4000d
I love how you were able to use all platforms and show us real world use and reflection of the usability and not sugar coat it.
Jared, 71% less is not the correct difference in weight. It weighs 71% of a 1DX not less than. So it's about 28% less.
Can’t readout as fast as an A1..? DOA in my book then. Moving on…
Math is hard I guess
I thought 70% less was weird..way too much less! LMAO!
You have some of the best reviews! I love that you make me laugh while also informing and educating :)
There is one advantage to the LCD not being completely flush: when facing backwards, there is less reflection of the photographer and less glare from a light source right behind you, like the sun. The main deficit is when shooting yourself with the LCD flipped forward, because it's a little awkward to center yourself properly.
May I presume that the eye-control AF works with back-button focus? It must really be great if it works with Jared's jerky eyes!
I am on this Channel for Years and Jared leads it the way that you gonna stay here forever.
I love Canon's politeness accepting that R3 is not going to match with A1 but it's significantly better than A9ii.
Unlike phone manufacters such as Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei. These camera manufacters compete with each other with respect.
But is 1500$ more! And if you can find the A9 original on some markets it's almost same as Mark ii but for 3000-3500$ New.
@@networm64 Yeah its $1500 more but its newer with more tech, bigger battery, built in grip so the price is justified in my opinion, this coming from someone who just bought an r6, if I could have afforded the r5 or this r3 I would have. Thats not to say the r6 is not good enough its an amazing camera and i've already gotten photos with it I would haven't gotten with my previous 80d, which I still have too.
@@oscarshen6855 Apple doesn't even mention the competition. You are referring to these 3 only Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei
A1? Nah , it’s against A9 series and light years ahead of Old Radio style Sony Series
Thanks so very much for such a detailed review. I had just bought a Canon R52 months ago, and I heard that the R3 was coming out. Your video makes me very happy because I still feel like for me I bought the right camera. I wanted to megapixels, they are three looks fantastic and it’s always interesting to see the new products
Waking up to this, this morning, good job Jared. 😊😊📸
I dont know how there is so many photographers and videographers doong BTS, PoV, Tutorial style videos for different types of photography and NOT recording their EVF or screen like Jared.
Amazing way to show how well a camera's AF works but also how a photographer frames shoots
This is bar none the best (p)review you've done as of yet. I've followed you for over eight years and this is the best ever. As always your reviews all always relevant. You are out in the world shooting real stuff, getting yourself in the harshest of shooting conditions to test the cameras. Well Done !
Kicking snow at 120 gets me every time! 😂
Was on the fence after the DP review first look, but this made me feel more confident. So I just went ahead and pre-ordered one.
Can't wait to play with this powerhouse of a camera
"Who'll remain nameless like *Bruce Bennett*" lmao... 😂😂
I watch your videos and listen to the podcast…you are doing great man. Thanks for all the valuable and FREE information!
That auto detect of flicker so you can dial in the shutter speed is amazing!
Nice camera !
Now we all need the 400mm 2.8 !
Always remember Jared: always buy good glass...
Stayed to the end and enjoyed it so much I have pre ordered :) thanks Jared
thank you
@@froknowsphoto no thank you.... for being so ace !
I got here! I’m definitely not pro enough to be worth of this camera but it looks amazing. Appreciate the work you do, Jared!
Everything is state of the art even the price tag. Amazing pREVIEW of this beautiful camera thanks Canon for doing their best
wow, really excited Jared 😍
Is it possible to have Zebras and focus peaking on at the same time in the R3? :)
I reached a point of camera tech saturation about a year ago. I no longer feel the goody-feeling stuff anymore. I received the Adorama and B&H e-mails about the EOS R3 and felt nothing.
After selling my barely-used Sony a7R II and lens and keeping my Nikon D70s and Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro antiques, I attained a weird internal tranquility.
Still, here is my thumbs-up, because I still enjoy photography and these videos take a lot of work to put together and make.
The Canon EOS R3 is a beast of a sports and action camera for $5999, but I don't know what camera would need to come out to get me compelled to buy it.
Thing is, they all make amazing pictures regardless of sensor size. It's about getting the right tool for the job.
I can already picture people desperately preordering the EOS R3 thinking that FINALLY, they will have the camera they needed to take their photography to the next level.
If they only knew that the next level happens in the heart, not in the hand with a new camera. 😁👍
Great revue.. Looking forward to more . You do a great job. It is amazing how far cameras have gone. I remember when I was young in 1955 as a boy holding an Ansco 620 with a press 25 flash bulb on it. To my first Nikon F and being trained on Leica M 3 and 4X5 speed graphic. Now I am into mirrorless and happy with what I have. As you said it might be for you in the future or other "Pro's". Amazing how far it has gone. Also the prices. Great job Jared. Keep up the great work.
While it is true that you need to pay extra for the grip on Sony cameras, i like the fact that you can actually take it off when not needed.
I got here 👍 - thx for the review Jared!
I got here! Great job Fro being through, and also great job Stephen on the fast turnaround!
This is great Jared! Thanks for the preview. It has helped me understand why I might actually buy an R3. Please keep up the good work!
Tom
Still saving for the R5 that low MP on the R3 despite everything it offers and it is a bangin good, I will go with R5. Love the eye detection, but I also have eye issues, and fear struggling with such an awesome feature I would probably not be able to utilize. Thanks for the review Jared.
for a 2 days hand off it's an amazing review
Excellent! Now not worth wasting my life listening to the other YT reviews. Good job.
Got here … love the review and the approach you take in explaining the pluses and minuses.
Today I got every answer about the R3 , watched the full video without skipping , thank you for this video
Great review! Love the Whole New World Solo 🎤 🎶 🤣
Awesome preview! Well done as always
The auto flicker detection is actually super useful
After watching the entire video, the only thing that bothered me is the asymmetrical card slot. I shot with the original a9 for 4 years and I really don't like one fast+one slow card. It is forcing the photographer to shoot RAW in one and JPG to the other.
Me too. Love All the specs but that. In my Nikon D500 I shoot raw plus raw. And I hate I don't have a faster second card. I have wanted a D5 with dual XQD cards. I figure. If one of my cards corrupts. I still don't want JPEGs. So my backups are raw also. I shoot Nikon DSLRs but I'm really liking this camera.

Correction Jared - weight including batteries of the Canon R3 is 1015g; compared to 1440g for the 1DX Mkiii. That equates to 30% less (and not 71% less)
Probably meant 70% of the weight
Thanks for the hard work producing this review! Very informative.
Canon's focusing looks stupendous
Jared doing it before anyone else, damn!
As far as the silent shutter sound option for this camera, you know what would be pretty cool? An option to change the sound of the shutter. I tend to find the shutter sounds in other camera brands vey satisfying to hear.
The Z9 is supposed to come with adjustable shutter sounds 😂😂
Looks like a great camera! Can you do one button video while taking pictures in all the custom modes? (using clog3 in all modes?)
Order the Canon EOS R3 from Allen's Camera bit.ly/3hzfJVl
Great review! Thanks for that. However, if it weighed 71% less than the D1, the R3 would only weigh 294.35 grams. :)
Either that or the 1DX III Is 3kg
@@v0ldy54 nope... still a fail. the 1Dx iii is only 1440 gr with battery. Only 28% more than the R3.
I so much agree about the cards, it should be two CF express, and “for me” the 24mp is a downer, however I am amazed by the advancement in camera technology despite the fact that revenues have gone down substantially over the last 6 years or so.
This is the longest Camera review i have ever watched and not bored.
Amazing camera! Great video Jared 😊
42:07 -> Jaw dropped!!! Did Canon finally get with the times? Thanks Sony (and Panasonic) for pushing them :)
Competition breeds innovation
Lots of hype for so long but this is actually a sick camera, thanks for the thorough and detailed video!
Is the exposure scale in the viewfinder configurable? IOW, can you change it to display at the bottom of the screen instead of at the side? Great preview; thanks!
At 12:26, yes in theory the readout speed is 25% better than the A9ii, however the A9ii has less distortion, and the ball would look more rounded. Why is that? It's simple and Sony mentioned that in their presentations: the A9 has extra circuitry that does rolling shutter distortion compensation. So even with a slightly worse readout speed, it's able to produce better results.
The difference is extremely minor, not even worth to discuss about
Nice camera, very cool! That 30fps would be right up my alley for airshows! That said, i just bought an R5 and waiting for it to arrive so ......
return it! return it!! and get the r3!!
@@reboundk1ng why?
@@floriandekret2088 he said it himself he needs the 30fps, R5 can't do that
@@reboundk1ng im thinking about r5 or r3 for wildlife/landscape... i dont know.. no need for more fps .. What do you think?
@@floriandekret2088 either choice would be perfect for wildlife/landscape, don't worry man
I absolutely love the technology being implemented. It's all so super cool - and the USER has a choice to use these or not. Awesome details, and thanks for breaking it down. The R3 is a force to be reckoned with!
Thanks dude. Always a reliable early reviewer.
Thanks for doing this video. I got up at 3am (Seattle) to preorder my EOS R3.
Bummed to hear it's microHDMI instead of miniHDMI. I thought they would have learned after all the complaints about the EOS R5/6 and the microHDMI jack.
I really wanted more than 24MP resolution, because I'm spoiled with the 45MP of the EOS R5. But the new features and ability to record video longer than 30 minutes will make up for it (I hope). If not, I'll upgrade again when the EOS R1 comes out.
Hey Fro. A most thorough comprehensive assessment. Kudos.
Good thing Canon put a flippy screen in so vloggers can use this camera with all those great telephoto lenses.
Pete McKinnon: FINALLY
Great to see these cameras still kicking butt. I laugh when people say Phone cameras make them obsolete. For sure the price tag and size does not make them accessible or convenience to most but they still give the best photography quality we can get.
So far the best and most informativ review.
44th! I can't justify the price at the moment, but it is exciting seeing where the technology is going and the tech will be standard in the lower price range models in a few years.
Made it , Jared. Great Review good to see the Full World Review ..
Does the eye autofocus work with glasses on ?😅
Thanks for the video Jared & Stephen!
Shout out to Daniel for being a good sport and model! 👍
Normally I'm not a huge fan of how you present things (too loud \ shouty) but I cannot dispute the quality of what you're actually saying and the info you're getting out.
Looks to be a fantastic camera that'll only get better with firmware updates IMO
Is there any news on crop bodies for the R range yet?
Looks great especially the focusing system , the two massive fails are the 24mp and the sd card slot for $6000 I’d expect more
The target audience for this doesn’t need high resolution. I agree I don’t like the sd card slot
@@danpedraza9586 also, the lower MPs mean better iso performance. People forget that lower noise is a priority over high MP count for the people this camera is targeted at.
@@sahilmeena8018 I’d still expect 30mp or 36mp
@@sahilmeena8018 Croc. MP has nothing to with noise. High ISO does. I can shoot at 100 iso with 24mp or 100mp and be tack sharp but if I shoot at 3200 iso with 12mp I'll get high noise.
@@benpykephotography I wouldn't. The 1dxiii has a 20.1 mp sensor
I wonder how good the car tracking will do on different color cars. I shot a lot of races with my EOS-R and noticed that it had a hard time focusing on certain car colors, gray in particular.
Excellent pReview! I appreciate your efforts, Jared!
Canon will always be my favourite
Damn. I want all these features (especially the focusing system), and I want to upgrade from my 10 y/o 600D, but I don't quite want to spend this many thousands of Euros on them.
No shit when u spend more money u get better specs
I’m on a 80D, and have similar thoughts. Though in my case, looking at a new, primary, non-professional camera body, I’m waiting for these features (but dual CF, split card is silly), with R5 body/resolution. I love the end of the fake video time limit (about d@&! time). I don’t need 30fps, and not willing to pay significant premium for it. But all the rest, yes, I want and will pay. Here is to hoping R5 Mark II has better design/thermal mgmt, and incorporates the AF improvements from the R3
I tried a Fuji X-T4 for 2 months and it just wasn't strong enough in video performance and video autofocus for me to keep it. Even though it has a great movie / still switch that separates the video settings from the video settings. The R3 does everything I wished the X-T4 would have done, including 6k video with excellent continuous video autofocus. Because I want to shoot a little wider so I can keyframe my rotation and position and scale and export to 4k. So now I know what the price tag on that performance is and why the X-T4 just doesn't match that level of performance.
I criticized you for the last R3 video that didn't provide any value. I am now praising you for this video. Thank you so much for providing actual content. I enjoyed this quite a bit.
Always best in class real world review! What else? I don't need a R3 but I want one. Why? I dunno.
I believe with "A1" Sony has set the bar pretty high so it will be not easy surpassing it's flagship, but even if other manufacturers reach close that would be not less than amazing.
Though I am also interested in video capabilities also, let's see when R3 gets into cinematographers' hands.
Being a R5 user and a wedding shooter, I would rather wait for the R1 for more megapixels. As always, great review J!
what does the R1 will do better than this one ?
@@tobylaine2785 I would say bigger sensor with bigger megapixels, greater FPS, and improved video quality including maybe a better codecs?
I got here, and I’m glad I did! Great review Fro!!!!!!
Thanks for putting this out for us. Really helpful.
I’m good with my R5, the R3 looks like an amazing camera though
Thank you so much I needed your opinion
real nice review. and of course, a fantastic camera showing what in 2021 is possible with dslm.
just want to say... panasonic, fuji, olympus, pentax (ricoh), they all don't have a comparable model to eos r3 or sony a1, it's not only nikon.
Like Ronald Mcdonald in the video here, Areyou forgetting what nikon is capable of? yes sony went way ahead canon caught up but I think the Z9 will be another step above them both
@@jasonhowells7758 compared to canon or sony nikon is a small company. i'm not sure if nikon has the needed budget for a kind of camera-tech-war, we now see between sony and canon. and often it's a better idea to be a (fast) follower as an innovator. but after all there is one big point for me. i can make real great shots with brilliant colors and stunning sharpness with my nikon. personally, i have no problems with focus. and my nikon together with my favourite lense coasts the half of a r3.
FUJI FANBOYS TO ME! :D..but true, my fuji is nowhere near their specs
@@PatrickFeldhusen I thought Sony basically owned Nikon now.
Jared, you can flip the screen around to lay flush against the back of the camera to have that alignment you want. This also works on every other Canon flip out screen.
It's just a couple degrees off an exact 180°
@24:34 The main reason I like SD cards is that all print labs have a reader for it. It might not sound that important but it really is, mainly for when we sell photos during an event and need to print out-of-camera JPEGs.
I’m just here for the sniff test 👃🏾 😮💨
The card choice... I bet, is related to repurposing the R5 mainboard.
Two camera’s preordered. Bloody awesome.
A big thank you Jared !
"Ok, we have our mirrorless 1DX, but it's not as good as Sony A1"
"I know! Let's label it R3 and say it's not our flagship yet"
"Great idea, we'll have some time to research something better"
Yeah weird, I don’t get it either
they named it r3 before the a1 released am i wrong?
@@randomnetizen7980 yeah this thing has been coming for a while and it seems like the a1 came out of nowhere
Spot on lol
And by the time the R1 comes out, I presume that the A1 II would be right around the corner.
Before that, Sony may also first release the A7IV and A9III, so Canon always has something to worry about.
What you just said about the R6 is why I signed up for the giveaway
now that a good note book! everything is highlighted!
Great review. Thank you. Did you try the eye autofocus whilst wearing glasses?
I think the extended viewfinder could help people that have certain prescriptions on their glasses. I know it would help me from smudging the back screen with my nose.
Yeah. One of things that make mirrorless cameras more appealing to me. I can't look through the viewfinder without squishing my nose on the screen on DSLRs. Not a problem, really, just a nice to have.
@@sahilmeena8018 Oddly it's one of the reasons I flip my screen out to the side lol.
@@riothero313 i sometimes do that too on my nikon dslr, but it doesnt create as much of a gap as the protruding EVFs do, and it just makes me uncomfortable having my screen out like that, especially since my screen is getting squeaky around the hinge.
Jared your Video has more Info then Canons Presentation !!!!! Thank you!
Thank you for the readout speed information ! :)
I actually once had to go to the corner store to buy a new sd card because my old ones were all full and I couldn't back up my images while travelling. So I can kinda see where Canon is coming from.
had this problem too, but this is meant for profesionals, and they are expected to carry more than 2 memory cards of CF Express. So I still don't like the SD card
Wow! Jared -- when does your "Disney's Greatest Hits by Fro" album get released?!?!?!?!?! I want to pre-order one!
i also really need to underline that canon always feels better in the hand then sony cameras…great video!
Probably more reliable too.
Thanks for this great long video! Appreciate your work a lot.
