  • St John the Evangelist church in Piddinghoe is located in the centre of the village atop a large embankment. The iconic round tower now holds six bells bells, unusually hung in a square two tier frame. The back three were cast in 1713 by Samuel Knight, probably at the same time of the building and installation of the bell frame. One can only guess that two bells, hung in the base of the tower in the old frames (which can be seen in this video), pre-dates this installation. The three new trebles were sourced by the KeltekTrust to augment to six.
The ring of six were completed in May 2023, and the recordings were taken during the first service ringing a few days later. The band consisted of ringers from Lewes (Southover), Rodmell and the learners at Piddinghoe.

If I was involved in a project like this to create a six from an unringable three and the end result was like these, I'd be seriously underwhelmed at the result. And yes, I have been heavily involved in bell projects in the past.

The point is Alan, that every tower and ring is different. Whilst what you have ended up with at Barnoldswick is undoubtedly superb, not every project has the option for such a good result. Many (like this one) have serious constraints which need to be worked around, and quite often there are budget constraints. Sometimes you simply have to make the best of a bad job - but does that mean that the job shouldn't be done at all? I think that Tom and his team have done very well here - I really don't think that anyone else would have made a better job under the conditions. It's a shame there is such negativity.

@@matthewhigby You are exactly right, I was lucky with Barnoldswick. I was lucky that the PCC didn't put a penny in to the project and that that it was my choice eitherto use the three Rudhalls as the back three, or add one Tenor behind them or add two Tenors behind the Rudhall three. What wasn't as lucky was that there was £14,500 in total grant funding. If you've heard the recording of the now augmented ring of eight, I'm sure you will agree that I made the right choices-No luck required

@@fartwell2000 I agree that they don't look especially easy, although I'm yet to ring there myself. I'd say the tuning was a good job though, and perhaps just some acoustics work would make them a lot better.

Yes agreed taylors would do a good job of tuning them and making the framework
