  • Today I am in Balcombe in West Sussex at St Mary's Church talking to Ollie Watson, AKA Ringer Ollie, a young lad of fifteen whose passion is bell ringing.
Ollie started when ringing church bells when he was eight years old and has worked his way up the ranks to Vice Captain of the Tower. He loves nothing better than scrambling about the ancient bell towers of Sussex examining and help maintaining the bells, as well as ringing them of course!
Ollie has a RUclips Channel where you can find him ring bells with many of his ringing chums. Check it out here:

hi, Ollie! how fantastic that you found a passion so young! my nephew enjoyed ballet, even performing in The Nutcracker for Washington Ballet at the Kennedy Center. unfortunately, he was teased and ended up giving it up. i'm not sure how much he misses it.
    thank you, Ollie and Richard!

I’ve recently started bell ringing at my local church. The tower has a lovely spiral staircase up to the bells, but there’s not as much room around them as this. We baffle the bells for practice, it avoids disturbing the neighbours. I wish I was 15!

Well done Sue! How lovely, I do like a good spiral staircase. Oh yes, I am sure we all wish we were 15 again.

Thanks for the video. I enjoyed this. It's good to see youngsters taking part in traditional activities. As when these things are gone, they will be gone forever and our culture has to be preserved..It's great to premote them to the young.
Olie was very knowledgeable and confident. Well done.

Great stuff! There are quite a few of us bellringers and I have seen lots of young ringers in my seven years of ringing. Ringing is very social and nearly always involves the local pub. There are lots of Tower Tours too, where you try out several towers bells in one day...and then visit the pub for a slap up meal. Ringing in the New Year is lovely, with a mince pie and a flask or two of mulled wine 🙂

Thanks Richard and Ollie. So good to see a young man so enthusiastic about other things other than screens and football. I live the sound of bells, we have a keen bunch of ringers here in the village. Mind you some have been known to complain about the noise! 😏.

Favourite bell ringing story, when Laurel & Hardy came over to Britain,as there ship approached Southampton they could hear something! When they got nearer they realised that all the church bells were playing there theme tune!! Must have taken a lot of practice to set that up?!

What a great chap Ollie is - always good to see young people carrying on the traditions. At the recent heritage open days, the bell ringers at St John’s Redhill opened up their ringing chamber to ‘have a go’ - it’s quite therapeutic! (I did look at their ringing charts, it’s interesting to see that Ollie says he’s not into maths, it looks very scientific and mathematical to me!)

    The bells were cast in 1936 by Gillett & Johnston , well 7 were. That is 12 3 4 5 6 and 8
No 7 dates back to 1628 and I totally agree with Ollie , it sounds out of place and they should have cast 8 bells

Recasting it wouldn’t have been possible as I’m pretty sure it’s a listed bell (Ollie may have even said in the vid, can’t remember). When my tower at Pulborough we’re restored, the original Eldridge fourth couldn’t be retuned so now if hangs in its own frame with an electric hammer, whilst a new 4th was Cast by Taylors Eare & Smith (Now Just Taylors)
