I knew about this sweep but I didn’t know that golden detail about scooting his legs together and getting more in a parallel position to his hips that was absolute gold. It’s 4:25am right now so I can’t use it but I’m gonna try later on today lol.
Thank you Coach Tom! Your videos are very informative. I've used some of the moves you teach and fellow students at my school are impressed how fast I'm grasping BJJ. I've only started about a month and a half ago. I'm 42 years old and BJJ has transformed me into a better person physically and mentally. Thank you! - Mario, Chicago, IL, USA
As another plan B, if you have the undertook and they post out with their far arm, blocking the roll, you can also whizzer on the underhook side, shrimp out, and take back. If you don't have the underhook, you can shoot your nearside leg underneath your far leg and through while maintaining pressure on their neck, pull your arm that is on their knees out and roll to your knees, then throw the now nearside leg (formerly the outside leg) over their back. There are several options from here, depending on that they do, to finsh getting back or rolling back to guard.
Thanks for this amazing option! I’ve been trying this one recently but it is difficult to maintain their legs close together. As soon as they feel it they sprawl out the leg that my hand is trying to control, and legs are stronger. Being fast about it is easier said than done. The top person feels immediately that something is wrong and bases out fast with the leg (I’m greedy, I want the sweep instead of closed guard). Also I agree with the other commentator that this is more difficult with top person on their knees/shins, especially trying to get their legs close together. This top control position is far more common where I train and the sprawled leg top control is more common from the old school guys.
Great stuff Tom, I like this sweep from side control , I have found I can only do it to a few ppl , If they don't post the sweep works if they do I just get them back into guard with the space created.. The quote you paraphrased originally by Norman Vincent Peale who wrote the power of positive thinking and was then popularized by Les Brown motivational speaker, "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars"
This looks fantastic. I've watched a lot of side control escape videos and this makes the most sense so far. I find myself controlling the knee and moving my hips towards my opponent naturally quite often, so this has filled in the blanks! Can't wait to try it! Really enjoying your videos Tom. Keep up the awesome work!
underhook on 1 side, grab knee on other side, walk towards his legs a bit weakening the base, release your underhook as you bridge, reach up and over and you end up in side control of him with an underhook/// if partner has underhook elbow in grab knee, walk towaords him, bridge , big bridge..maybe have feet int he air then launch to ground and bridge for poewr i guess in general walk your legs closer to him before your bridge..have an underhook.. the flick of the wrist thing ...gotta try that
Hi coach Tom, what if your partner who is controlling you in side control has his knees very close to you, one under your armpit and the other by your hips, wouldnt it make the roll a lot harder?
Good comment and the answer is yes and no. By having a short base they are less like a cylinder and more like a ball. Both of these objects roll so I tend to find that is you bridge high enough, you can roll shortbase guys too but worst case just recover your near elbow inside his body to weaken his side control. Happy rolling (-: Coach Tom
Mounting is always a possibility and the key to its prevention is to ensure your hip is in contact with their torso during the roll so they cannot get their leg over without switching their base and consequently losing their balance
When top guy bases out is it possible to use the hand on the knees to reach up and take the based hand to complete the roll? Or is the arm to far to be pulled in?
Love the videos but the echo in the room makes it hard to hear. You can get rid of the room reverb with an audio editing program. Just a tip to help make your channel better, hope you don't mind
You can always take the back by scooting out the back door if you have the outside underhook. But thats gonna be a bit more of a dogfight that you could lose especially if they get a strong whizzer and break down your posture.
wow that is so cool. I train in the sydney west area. I am a white belt two strips. i Also want to say that you have an awesome library of BJJ and i hope that it will continue to grow. It defs made me more confident rolling with higher ranks.

It's a game of inches, I'm gonna make that adjustment too.
Thank you so much for putting in time and effort for making such good videos.
Tom. Just want to say thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I and many others are surely thankful.
THANKS FOR THE GREAT COMMENT STEVE. SO GLAD YOU ENJOY THEM! Happy rolling (-: Coach Tom

You are by far the best step by step instructor on RUclips in my opinion 😊

Hey Coach Tom, I appreciate the attention to detail and the easy teaching pace you use. Thanks!
My pleasure I am glad you enjoy them and happy training (-: Coach Tom
This video was so helpful and actually worked for me as a white belt who was always getting stuck in side control. Thank you!

Really enjoying your videos Tom. Keep up the awesome work!
Thank you Pete. Just be surprising and explosive and this escape works amazingly well! Happy rolling (-: Coach Tom
I usually hold one leg to keep them from mounting and to recover full or half guard. I never thought about the roll. This is great stuff. Thanks!
This looks like an old video, but I'm new to jiu jitsu and love the instruction coach tom!
Wish I knew this move last night, for Coach Paul's side control control class!
I've been struggling with heavy/strong sprawl side control a lot recently...Thanks for another awesome video.
Don't forget to combine this roll with a hip escape if countered. You will have great success! Happy rolling (-: Coach Tom
Used this escape this morning and worked a charm!! Great demonstration.....even I could do it!!!
great move... never heard a better explanation. shoot for the stars, reach the moon. nice Tom. nice.
Thank you Chris! Happy rolling (-: Coach Tom Davey

Hi Coach Tom. You are awesome; your explanations are helping this old fella!!
Awesome Lawrence glad to hear! Happy rolling (-: Tom Davey
Thank you Coach Tom for the great reverses and escapes. I’m learning so much by watching these.
underhook on 1 side, grab knee on other side, walk towards his legs a bit weakening the base, release your underhook as you bridge, reach up and over and you end up in side control of him with an underhook///
if partner has underhook
elbow in grab knee, walk towaords him, bridge , big bridge..maybe have feet int he air then launch to ground and bridge for poewr
i guess in general
walk your legs closer to him before your bridge..have an underhook..
the flick of the wrist thing ...gotta try that
I did this escape today thank you so much coach Tom ❤️
I have never seen those small details before. Thanks a lot!

Thanks. At 2:10 is their a moment when top guy might mount you with a right knee slide or otherwise?
Mounting is always a possibility and the key to its prevention is to ensure your hip is in contact with their torso during the roll so they cannot get their leg over without switching their base and consequently losing their balance
The 20 Dislikes Are Aliens From Siris. How can You Dislike Something Helpful To Maybe Thousands, WTF....Coach Tom You're Awesome Brother
Those who disliked video must feel that winning at sports is oppression.
@@SpecOpsGear LOL Right, unbelievable
I'm confused now weither to learn the techniques or learn your accent because they are both great😊👍👏
And we can take back as well when opponent post his hand
When top guy bases out is it possible to use the hand on the knees to reach up and take the based hand to complete the roll? Or is the arm to far to be pulled in?
Depends really. Best to combine it with a reverse hip escape.
Awesome!
Ohhh man, I’ve been watching your videos. You got so much bigger compared to this video! Thanks for the videos also, great stuff!
Just had the same thought Alex. He must've gained 40lbs since this video. Maybe vegemite is the secret?
Getting underhook on your outside arm helps as well
Like getting the guard
Love the videos but the echo in the room makes it hard to hear. You can get rid of the room reverb with an audio editing program. Just a tip to help make your channel better, hope you don't mind
Hello Coach Tom!
I'm wondering.. isn't this sweep with the underhook putting yourself at a big risk of getting kesa gatame'd?
In a way yes but a big bridge does wonders!
Hey Mr Blue belt but do you always do that kind of side control like in the video
Is it possible to gain the back with this roll ? I feel like that could be a middle step in between the roll and the hip escape
You can always take the back by scooting out the back door if you have the outside underhook. But thats gonna be a bit more of a dogfight that you could lose especially if they get a strong whizzer and break down your posture.
These videos are awesome! are you Australian?
Yes Alex, Australian born and raised! I do spend much of each year travelling but hope to meet on the mats some day! Kind regards, (-: Coach Tom

I'm hyped to try this! gonna hit the mat tommorow:) osu
+Sensei Walingh good luck and have fun (-: Coach Tom
What to do if they just move their leg against your arm to regain their base? It's hard to control the leg with just one arm
hold tighter. Side control should be hard to escape. The leg however, is not that strong in the outward arc. GIve it a try. (-: Tom Davey
All well and good but who holds side control led like that!!? 😂😭
he looks like jack from lost
Ossssss
So the roll doesn't work
Bump and shoot on steroids
Was about to watch the video, but it’s 8min long
