In 1991 I was still in the Army, and we had just finished spanking Iraq during Desert Storm. We were in Saudi Arabia waiting to go back to the US. Some friends and I decided to go to downtown Riyadh (against orders). We ended up in a mall where I found a music instrument store. We went into it, and I picked up a guitar, turned the gain up to max, cranked the volume, and started playing "Seek and Destroy". About halfway through the song, one of my buddies taps me on the shoulder. Up until that point, I was looking down at the fretboard. When I look up, through the store's plate glass windows, I see literally HUNDREDS of people watching me play. They had varied expressions ranging from disdain, confusion, and some even had smiles and were into it. I'll never forget that.
James and Lars had a lot of balls. Here you have two kids who have played together a handful of times, they go to a concert of a band that was already established and had released a record, and they decide they want that bass player to join them. That's why Metallica made it so big. Hetfield and Ulrich had a vision since the beginning.
This was the start for me, Metallica rules from the beggining off what we called speedmetal. From then on, i was about 15 years young, everything was about their metal! I am 59 now and enjoy every moment off their music! The family rules! ♨️♨️♨️

I got into Metallica after buying Kill 'Em All shortly after it was released in 1983. I was living 90 min from LA at the time. I wanted to go see that show you're referring to so badly but I didn't have a ride, then Cliff was killed in that bus accident a few months later and I was so upset and bummed out.
One of mine too - sadly I never had the chance to see them. I saw Metallica three times post cliff. Interestingly the last time when the guys are all 60ish they played their absolute best. James was just getting over the bug too. One helluva show.... But to see diamond the gang, that would have been a whole other level.
I agree - it would have been really interesting to see where they went musically. Pantera was just around the corner, so for all we know Cliff might have hooked up with that lineup if he found Metallica was getting too commercial. That in and of itself would have been pretty interesting.
I saw them open for Ozzy in 1986 and had no idea who they were, amazing how long it took for everything to finally hit me all at once in 1987 when I started to learn guitar.
They didn't do that many shows of the Ultimate Sin tour. Ozzy flaked and went back to rehab. Metallica was on fire right about then and didn't want the buzz to fade away, so they went to Europe and toured there planning to rejoin ozzy when rehab was done. It was while they were in Europe that Cliff was killed in that accident......put that thought on the back burner for a bit, well get back to it. When ozzy got kicked outta Sabbath he wanted to build a superior band to triumph what Sabbath had done to him and acquired Randy Rhodes. Randy and his friends made fun of Black Sabbath. Considering thier style sub par for the kind of music he wanted to write and play. In fact he planned to leave Blizzard of Ozz after the Diary tour was over. It was during that tour Randy was killed. Had Ozzy left Randy in Quiet Riot he wouldn't have been in Florida for the tragic accident. ......Had Ozzy kept out of rehab and his tour going, Metallica would have been state side. Not on an icy roadway in Europe. So rock music has lost 2 of its most brilliant stars due to the actions of Ozzy Osbourne. His song You Can't Kill Rock and Roll, well if you're Ozzy you sure as hell can. I live outside of Seattle. My friend and I drove to Vancouver BC to buy tickets for Ozzy/Metallica at the PNE Expo. Then had to drive back to get a refund after the show was cancelled. Ugh. Okay rant over.
Ur lucky u got to see them with Cliff. My 1st Metallica show was the Lightning tour in Seattle St Patrick's day at the Moore Theater 85. Armored Saint opened. That night changed my life.
In 86, I was 15 and a huge Metallica fan. My older brother (18) Saw them open for Ozzy (with Cliff!) on that tour and came home saying how much they sucked. I'm in my 50s now and I'm still bitter about not going to that show.

My Dad moved to El Cerrito CA from New Jersey the summer of 1980. I spent the summer of 81 & 82 in El Cerrito then decided to stay for my stint in 8th grade at Albany Middle school. Little did I know (I did not hear them yet) that Metallica 😳 was living right down the road from my dad's house. I may have even seen them at the El Cerrito plaza and didn't know it. I moved back to Kendall Park NJ in the summer of 84. That summer my friend Sue Dominoski turned me on to Metallica & was hooked from that day. Another little did I know happened....that they followed me to NJ & were living 35 minutes from me 😳 Man I wish I knew then what I know now. Fast forward many years & many shows later. I was able to redeem myself getting first come first serve tickets free from The Wiz for the Black album release listening party at Madison square garden . My friend Greg & I made our way down to floor level right at an exit. And who do you think was hanging out there watching. They weren't supposed to even be there so they said.Kirk went into the crowd with his I would imagine girlfriend at the time and no one even knew it. A smaller group at the exit where I was knew Metallica was watching the show. I was able to reach down and high five James and Lars... After they played all the videos & cranked the whole new Black album Metallica went on stage. Lars goes to the mic and says it's James birthday.... Everyone say fuck you James!!!! & we did 😂 Never forget that day 🤘🤘🤘🤘

I was a college intern at music America Studio when Metallica was recording there. I didn't meet them or know of them at the time, and then a couple years later I switched from music into photography and started working for Gary Heard, the photographer of the album cover. I saw the album on his Studio wall when he told me he did the cover after being asked by the bands producer Paul. Strangely enough years later while I was working for Kodak I got to meet Kirk Hammett and told him the story, he got a kick out of it.
Actually, while Kirk was copying Dave's solo in Hit The Lights, Dave was copying & guy named Lloyd Grant who originally played the solo. I'm sure Lloyd's solo is on YT somewhere.

The band that introduced me to heavy/alternative music. Most artists are lucky to have 2 or 3 great songs on an album Metallica nails every song , every album. To start your career with Kill em all, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, Justice for All and Black might never be duplicated as far as quality of songs

Metallica did a better cover of the Diamond Head song, however I too am not a fan of Diamond Head, they didn't go far. I am aware of Metallica's roots I even personally know some of the guys in the band or that were in the band. Jason Newsted came from Flotsam And Jetsam yep I know them, Rob came from Suicidal Tendencies, I know them as well, but i still don't like diamond head. I stay far from Lars and nothing against Kirk but Dave is GOD and a much better player in my eyes.
Not as much Budgie imo, but I'd say Diamond Head, Venom, Saxon, G.B.H, Mercyful Fate, Sabbath, Motorhead, Priest, Raven, Tygers Of Pan Tang, Blitzkrieg, Savage, Discharge, Thin Lizzy, etc.
The only time I saw them was at a Tower Records parking lot! It was the release of the Load album, but they didn’t play anything from it! Opened with Creeping death, seek n destroy, and a few others. They closed with whiplash!! Fucking crazy! They pulled up in a semi, dropped the side w a big ass Alcholica banner. That was in 98 ish. I still have the caution tape from the crowd control barriers!
The Four Horsemen was the song that made me a fan of Metallica when I was a kid. The first time I saw them in concert (Louder than Life Fest 2021), they played that song (and also played the entire Black Album in reverse sequence). It was a full circle moment for me, and it was very cool, especially since (prior to that show) it seemed like they don’t play The Four Horsemen that often.
That's the perfect track to get started on! That's great you saw them - I saw them a couple times and I must say that last year they were better than they were in the '90s. That band just keeps on getting better and better
Really the way I heard it from the Lemmy movie from the man himself is they where recording in England and got loaded every night so Lemmy's wondering where they got the time or where up to doing anything.

My introduction to Metallica was Kill 'em All. A stoner coworker who was a few years older than me gave me a cassette recording and said it was way too heavy for him. I was blown away instantly! Way different from the music of the day I was listening to: Scorpions, Ratt, Judas Priest, Van Halen, Ozzy, Sabbath, etc. Total raw, adrenaline inducing power! Still love it today.
Awesome story! I can relate - I came up in that era too. And yeah, Metallica brought something new and raw to the table as opposed to all the more slick and polished bands of the day. Thanks for sharing the memories - that's awesome!
The One video and song is what turned me onto Metallica back in 88-89 era. I was 10 years old and had a music store next to my house and discovered Kill em All, as And Justice for All was new and sold out and besides at that time expensive. So I bought Kill em All and was instantly hooked. Such a great clean sound. The bass is audible and Lars has some good fills on this album. Believe it or not I think Ride the lightning was the last album at that time that I bought, one of the best for last. Seeing Metallica and Pantera this friday so it's going to be surreal 🤘🏼♥️

Rochester is a great music city. Lived there most of my life. One of my earliest music memories was finding out Metallica recorded Kill em All there. One of my last was handing out with Danny Lilker at the Bug Jar.
It took a few minutes, but got what you meant in the end. A bloody silhouette, with "his" head facing right, towards the hammer and the hand pretty much bottom, centre. Maybe not their intention, but an interesting take. Did you see that from the beginning? Was wondering if you meant perhaps with the eyes, dotted (pupils), either side, or the two white spaces towards the left corner as eyes. That would have been some stretch though.
Thanks man - he's not exactly in the Guthrie Govan League, but he does bring a lot of heart and soul into it. When I saw them last year he put on a hell of a show.... Really him and Lars both are entertaining as hell live.
You learn a Hammet solo like Ride the Lightning and you're ready to play lead guitar. Simple as, regardless of what people like to say. We all started with Fade to black or whatever early Metallica solo one prefers, and thats way more powerful than whatever Malmsteen clones were doing at the time, or restless Polyphia clones do these days etc.

The chemistry was so much better once Kirk got in. I really think he played a big part in the band finding success because he got along so well with them. And really I'm sure it actually helped Dave's success as well in a roundabout way.
I love Mustaine..🤘🤘🤘 and his firing from 'Tallicre was undoubtedly one of the hardest to swallow next to Pete Best levels of annoyance.but i could never completely defend his blubbering on Some Kind of Monster..
If I could go back in time I would definitely see Metallica for their first three tours …luckily I was able to see them in concert for the And Justice For All tour

In 1983 I was a freshman in high school when I bought this album published by Megaforce records. I just remember my friend laughing at their pic on the back saying he saw zits. lol Anyway.. the music blew us away and when we saw Ride The Lightning we couldn't buy it fast enough. It wasn't long after that they signed to a major record label and the word was out.
Right on - it's a great memories with those albums for sure. Lol yeah I could see that about the zits. I remember being taken aback by how differently they looked - because most of our introduction was through Master of puppets when they had grown up a bit by that time. I saw him a year and a half ago for their double header show, I'm glad because they pulled out a lot of songs from Master especially - including master itself. They should do more of that stuff though - it translates so well on stage. Props to them - they're still rocking their asses off!
Definitely a life altering event or events as being around twenty at the time Kill Em All and Ride The Lightning came out. There Was kind of a malaise of Punk, Hardcore and Metal at the time that was getting stale. Gave me a whole new reason to avoid the real world and become a Thrash Metal head. Luckily we had Banzai Records in Canada that pretty much put out all the greatest Metal of this time. Was fortunate to see Metallica in 85 in what was still by future standards a small venue. Saw them again and again as it got bigger and bigger.
Gary Rossington told on a Lynyrd Skynyrd documentary,about how they were always broke before making it big,but sometimes could afford McDonalds,and went on to say that you had to eat fast,because if another guy finished his and saw you had some left,he'd take it from you,imagine fighting over a big mac lol,but,brawls between those guys was a way of life anyway.

If I were to pinpoint the exact moment when Metallica took a turn for the worse, it's the first time they were photographed without at least one member wearing a Misfits or Samhain T-shirt.

I would never say Dave isn’t a phenomenal writer and guitar player, but I’m tired of people acting like he wrote their first three albums when what actually happened was he wrote the main riff for four songs on their first album and the main rift to one song on the second album, and there was a very, very small part on master of puppets that is in debate, whether they intentionally ripped him off or not. Keep in mind this riff on master of puppets isn’t the main riff to the song it’s a part where the song is changing from one place to another it last all of a few seconds. I don’t think they would intentionally do that considering they gave him writing credits and make sure he gets paid royalties for the other songs. People pushing this narrative are either uninformed or they just hate Metallica and want to do everything they can on the Internet to make them look bad.
saw an intervjue with Lars about this not long ago. He said that James answered his ad and they met up, but didn't hit it of at all, so they went separate ways.. And Lars went home to Denmark for a while.. When he came back, to the states a friend of his had started a record company and he was about to release a compilation album with the bands on his label. Lars asked if he could join that album, only he didn't have a band.. So then he thought about James, and gave him a call. James came around, and that's when Metallica started mostly as a cover band. only Americans didn't know that, because they where covering European bands that Americans didn't know about, and they didn't say that they played covers.... it became a problem when they where about to seal a record deal, because almost every song they had was cover songs :) But looks like they fixed that somehow..
I love some Kirk's early solos he has some absolutely iconic stuff on the first 4 fade the black solo welcome home sanatorium seriously every guitar player my age must of learned that biggening solo it really is pentatonic genius but I fucking hate that wah wah enough already put the fcking pedal away lol like that will ever happen 😅
My first discovery of Metallica was when Master of Puppets came out... I was 15. Then I went back and bought this masterpiece and Ride the Lightning. It's hard to pick a favorite from those first 3. It can change day to day, but those first 3 albums are just pure perfection.

My Dad moved to El Cerrito CA from New Jersey the summer of 1980. I spent the summer of 81 & 82 in El Cerrito then decided to stay for my stint in 8th grade at Albany Middle school. Little did I know (I did not hear them yet) that Metallica 😳 was living right down the road from my dad's house. I may have even seen them at the El Cerrito plaza and didn't know it. I moved back to Kendall Park NJ in the summer of 84. That summer my friend Sue Dominoski turned me on to Metallica & was hooked from that day. Another little did I know happened....that they followed me to NJ & were living 35 minutes from me 😳 Man I wish I knew then what I know now. Fast forward many years & many shows later. I was able to redeem myself getting first come first serve tickets free from The Wiz for the Black album release listening party at Madison square garden . My friend Greg & I made our way down to floor level right at an exit. And who do you think was hanging out there watching. They weren't supposed to even be there so they said.Kirk went into the crowd with his I would imagine girlfriend at the time and no one even knew it. A smaller group at the exit where I was knew Metallica was watching the show. I was able to reach down and high five James and Lars... After they played all the videos & cranked the whole new Black album Metallica went on stage. Lars goes to the mic and says it's James birthday.... Everyone say fuck you James!!!! & we did 😂 Never forget that day 🤘🤘🤘🤘

I was a college intern at music America Studio when Metallica was recording there. I didn't meet them or know of them at the time, and then a couple years later I switched from music into photography and started working for Gary Heard, the photographer of the album cover. I saw the album on his Studio wall when he told me he did the cover after being asked by the bands producer Paul. Strangely enough years later while I was working for Kodak I got to meet Kirk Hammett and told him the story, he got a kick out of it.

Actually, while Kirk was copying Dave's solo in Hit The Lights, Dave was copying & guy named Lloyd Grant who originally played the solo. I'm sure Lloyd's solo is on YT somewhere.

To the guy who mentioned about diamond heads sucking my love you know your music most Metallica's early sounds came from diamond head budgie and sabbath
Metallica did a better cover of the Diamond Head song, however I too am not a fan of Diamond Head, they didn't go far. I am aware of Metallica's roots I even personally know some of the guys in the band or that were in the band. Jason Newsted came from Flotsam And Jetsam yep I know them, Rob came from Suicidal Tendencies, I know them as well, but i still don't like diamond head. I stay far from Lars and nothing against Kirk but Dave is GOD and a much better player in my eyes.
Not as much Budgie imo, but I'd say Diamond Head, Venom, Saxon, G.B.H, Mercyful Fate, Sabbath, Motorhead, Priest, Raven, Tygers Of Pan Tang, Blitzkrieg, Savage, Discharge, Thin Lizzy, etc.
They've been quoted as saying they wanted to put two 'heads together to create their sound. The two "'heads" being Diamondhead and Motorhead.
The only time I saw them was at a Tower Records parking lot!

The Four Horsemen was the song that made me a fan of Metallica when I was a kid. The first time I saw them in concert (Louder than Life Fest 2021), they played that song (and also played the entire Black Album in reverse sequence). It was a full circle moment for me, and it was very cool, especially since (prior to that show) it seemed like they don’t play The Four Horsemen that often.
That's the perfect track to get started on! That's great you saw them - I saw them a couple times and I must say that last year they were better than they were in the '90s. That band just keeps on getting better and better

My introduction to Metallica was Kill 'em All. A stoner coworker who was a few years older than me gave me a cassette recording and said it was way too heavy for him. I was blown away instantly! Way different from the music of the day I was listening to: Scorpions, Ratt, Judas Priest, Van Halen, Ozzy, Sabbath, etc. Total raw, adrenaline inducing power! Still love it today.
Awesome story! I can relate - I came up in that era too. And yeah, Metallica brought something new and raw to the table as opposed to all the more slick and polished bands of the day. Thanks for sharing the memories - that's awesome!
The One video and song is what turned me onto Metallica back in 88-89 era. I was 10 years old and had a music store next to my house and discovered Kill em All, as And Justice for All was new and sold out and besides at that time expensive. So I bought Kill em All and was instantly hooked. Such a great clean sound. The bass is audible and Lars has some good fills on this album. Believe it or not I think Ride the lightning was the last album at that time that I bought, one of the best for last. Seeing Metallica and Pantera this friday so it's going to be surreal 🤘🏼♥️

Kirky boi, until before Load and Reload, was a monster lead player, then he became lazy and repetitive, straight up lacking imagination.
You learn a Hammet solo like Ride the Lightning and you're ready to play lead guitar. Simple as, regardless of what people like to say. We all started with Fade to black or whatever early Metallica solo one prefers, and thats way more powerful than whatever Malmsteen clones were doing at the time, or restless Polyphia clones do these days etc.

Dave leaving the band and kirk joining the band was the best thing to happen for metallica. I love Dave, don't get me wrong, but kirk was it.
The chemistry was so much better once Kirk got in. I really think he played a big part in the band finding success because he got along so well with them. And really I'm sure it actually helped Dave's success as well in a roundabout way.

In 1983 I was a freshman in high school when I bought this album published by Megaforce records. I just remember my friend laughing at their pic on the back saying he saw zits. lol Anyway.. the music blew us away and when we saw Ride The Lightning we couldn't buy it fast enough. It wasn't long after that they signed to a major record label and the word was out.
Right on - it's a great memories with those albums for sure. Lol yeah I could see that about the zits. I remember being taken aback by how differently they looked - because most of our introduction was through Master of puppets when they had grown up a bit by that time. I saw him a year and a half ago for their double header show, I'm glad because they pulled out a lot of songs from Master especially - including master itself. They should do more of that stuff though - it translates so well on stage. Props to them - they're still rocking their asses off!

Definitely a life altering event or events as being around twenty at the time Kill Em All and Ride The Lightning came out. There Was kind of a malaise of Punk, Hardcore and Metal at the time that was getting stale. Gave me a whole new reason to avoid the real world and become a Thrash Metal head. Luckily we had Banzai Records in Canada that pretty much put out all the greatest Metal of this time. Was fortunate to see Metallica in 85 in what was still by future standards a small venue. Saw them again and again as it got bigger and bigger.

I would never say Dave isn’t a phenomenal writer and guitar player, but I’m tired of people acting like he wrote their first three albums when what actually happened was he wrote the main riff for four songs on their first album and the main rift to one song on the second album, and there was a very, very small part on master of puppets that is in debate, whether they intentionally ripped him off or not. Keep in mind this riff on master of puppets isn’t the main riff to the song it’s a part where the song is changing from one place to another it last all of a few seconds. I don’t think they would intentionally do that considering they gave him writing credits and make sure he gets paid royalties for the other songs. People pushing this narrative are either uninformed or they just hate Metallica and want to do everything they can on the Internet to make them look bad.

saw an intervjue with Lars about this not long ago. He said that James answered his ad and they met up, but didn't hit it of at all, so they went separate ways.. And Lars went home to Denmark for a while.. When he came back, to the states a friend of his had started a record company and he was about to release a compilation album with the bands on his label. Lars asked if he could join that album, only he didn't have a band.. So then he thought about James, and gave him a call. James came around, and that's when Metallica started mostly as a cover band. only Americans didn't know that, because they where covering European bands that Americans didn't know about, and they didn't say that they played covers.... it became a problem when they where about to seal a record deal, because almost every song they had was cover songs :) But looks like they fixed that somehow..

My first discovery of Metallica was when Master of Puppets came out... I was 15. Then I went back and bought this masterpiece and Ride the Lightning. It's hard to pick a favorite from those first 3. It can change day to day, but those first 3 albums are just pure perfection.
