    I was on depakote er, risperdal, mirtazapine, trazadone, one other antidepressant I can't remember, and benzotropine over a year and a half ago. I felt like a zombie once we got to the end of me getting my medications. I stopped taking all of them because I couldn't afford them, even using GoodRX at Walmart. I just quit cold turkey. I gained over 25% of my body weight while on all of those prescriptions and I was having dry orgasms. I quit taking them and had a small period where I was going through mania and depressive stages rapidly. Eventually I got to a point where I decided to just stay busy with something and I feel I've had a better recovery doing that than staying on the drugs.

    Both high levels of tyramines and low Monoamine oxidase-A (MAO-A) in the blood stream are behind all the symptoms described and that Depakote treats.
    If someone wants to improve their treatment, then a low tyramine diet and getting physically fit, to avoid fatty liver and liver dysfunction, is needed.
    When liver function declines, the ability to oxidize and rid the body of tyramines also declines.
    Low to moderate doses of prednisone completely block tyramines from interacting with neurons and receptors which improves mood, cognitive ability, physical pain, neuropathy etc.
    Brain fog is caused by tyramines blocking dopamine from brain neurons.

    And don't forget elevated ammonia levels in epilepsy depakote users, which, if depakote is most efficacious drug, can be mitigated by prophylactic lactalose and l carnitine. Also, if you take depakote consider nutrient depletion. As in zinc, biotin, vit d3, selenium and b complex. And for stomach pain nausea w depakote consider approved stomach teas, pepcid or other gastrointestinal calming agents and protection. And protect liver with NAC.

      Thank you for posting this info. I have been on the drug for several years and only just started to look into how harmful it really is. It causes inositol deficiency and low calcium in the blood. It causes the body to produce less collagen. It causes metabolic syndrome. If you read the side effects it can even cause incontinence. In the worst case scenario there's liver failure and pancreatitis. It can cause dementia. The list goes on.

    My daughter is 17, was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder by a psychiatrist, and now is trying to quit Depakote ER 500 mg after 7 months of taking it. I lost trust in the psychiatrist who changed the dosage up and down without telling us about the withdrawal symptoms, and she would not help my daughter taper slowly. I tried 25%, 20%, and then 17% reduction in 4 weeks but my daughter was in so much pain and couldn't handle it. But she seems fine with 10% reduction in 4 weeks (recalculated every 4 weeks, following a website about tapering meds) so for now we're sticking with 10%. According to my calculation she will be off in 2 years. That's an awfully long time to quit a drug she doesn't even need.

Your doctor should know you well and what medications will work for YOU. It's about you because nobody's experience with bipolar or the other illnesses it's used for have the same exact things going on. Your doctor would not have put you on it if they felt there was a big risk or harm. If freaked out by what you're hearing on the Internet know two things: People on the Internet are telling their story which isn't the same as yours. They may not be taking treatment as prescribe and going off meds. Two, they aren't psychiatrists and you get half truths, false info or misinformation often. You need to have a deep conversation with your shrink about your fears and this med and then proceed.

    • @gdroberts8163
      @gdroberts8163 3 года назад +2

      @@BeingBetter But are these supplements actually helping with the crippling fear? You have to be be totally honest with yourself and lay into the doctor for not getting better. While a hospital feels daunting it can in fact be the best place you have ever been. It gives you a chance to relax in a bubble and get support and everything fully worked out with your life. If you take that step things could be wonderful. In the meantime, try to do one thing each day that is usually uncomfortable for you and try to develop a pattern where it becomes a routine. I know people who are dealing with this. Above all don't give up on yourself because this can and does get better but it involves a lot of work and being 100% on same page as doctors treating you or to find ones you can work with. Supplements can't take place of Lithium though.

      Depakote gave me brain damage. I was prescribed a mix of phenobarbital and depakote to help get me off of benzodiazepines and I ended up getting extremely high ammonia levels from it (300 um/ol). I don't remember anything but I apparently went psychotic, was trying to fight people (cops/nurses) just saying stuff that didnt make sense. Ripping IV's out of myself and shit like that. Ended up being in a coma for several days due to it. I'm really lucky that it wasn't bad enough to need rehabiliation but it impacted my ability to read/write/speak a lot. It's not as bad anymore but I am horrible at articulating what I'm trying to say when speaking to people. It's annoying I feel like I sound as dumb as a rock when I talk because everything is always at the tip of my tongue.

    I am on Depokote, & have never been as depressed for as long as I've been on any other "neurotoxin". My nurse practitioner has agreed to work with me to withdrawal from all of the drugs I'm on. I know it will be a long journey, but I'm in for the the long haul. I've learned that all of the psychiatric drugs for me do more harm than good. Through research I've found the Amen Clinics. Dr. Amen has changed the paradigm of psychiatry, he refers to mental illness as "brain health issues". Psychiatry according to Dr. Amen, "Is the only medical specialty that virtually never looks at the organ it treats." His clinics do SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography). It scans the brain, based on the scan, it is evaluated & treatment is personalized. He's not ant-drugs, but drugs are not his first choice. I'm praying that an evaluation will result in treating my diagnosis of bi-polar ll (never bought into that) with supplements, proper diet & sleep, along with exercise. Dr. Peter Breggin, "How & Why to Stop Psychiatric Drugs". I find his book to be pricey, which is a shame because he scared the bejesus out of me, & the cost of the book is not affordable to me. I spent over $300 for one of his seminars & left w/no answers to withdraw safely. Anyway, if you've gotten through this lengthy comment, I hope you too will do research to discover the long term affects of these drugs. 🙏🏾 ing for me it's not too late.

      I am sorry about what happened to your daughter. However, not everyone who takes or took this drug will wind up in the same circumstances. We also don't know for sure based on your comment whether anyone officially came out and told you the cause was this drug. Maybe she had an underlying condition with her pancreas that wasn't addressed. It seems some people have horror stories as there are with any drug and others have had wonderful experiences. You really have to know your doctor well and he/she you and have a relationship where they wouldn't just put you on something without knowing what they were doing.

You are a specialist in skin diseases. Why are you lecturing on things like psychiatry, sexually transmitted diseases and infectious diseases etal? What makes you an informed expect on other medical specialties you are not qualifed to practice? If I had pneumonia I would not go to a dermatologist. Do you see my point? Thanks Paul Powers
