Thanks for sharing ! I bought this axe and reprofiled the edge to about 20 degrees which has a much better bite into the log for felling. And, it still holds a good edge for limbing. I believe the orginal profile is for all around limbing, splitting and such and not optimized for felling. Its a heavy enough for felling, but it would be nice to have at least a 28" handle and it would be perfect. I immediately scraped off the varnish and paint and ruffed up the end with a rasp, stained it a walnut color and boiled linseed oil. Its pretty sweet now and I guess works really well in tight spaces or limbing a trunk before the felling.

Nice look at a variety of popular axes. I had to buy a finnish axe because of you....

I climbed up a maple some days ago and chopped out a limb with the purchased sharpness and angles.

If you want my opinion, it’s not fair comparing a fresh out of the box, unground, un sharpened axe to some shaving sharp pristine axes. It’s only fair to compare the axe after it’s been filed and sharpened to other sharpened axes.

You are correct! The Stihl needs quite a bit of grinding to get right, so, off to the workshop.

Most people buy the stihl for splitting logs for the fire. Put a thinner edge and it cuts well.

Skipped the bulk of it, but the Billnas is probably my favorite. The Stihl probably my least. They put way to big of an eye on these Regularly Rhineland patterns which means run out at the most stressed part. That's why the collar's there in the first place. It's needed and people still break handles on them and the time.

I think testing the Srihl axe as it comes is valid. Especially for those who aren't into having to modify the profile on a new axe. It should be effective out of the box. The Stihl would be a good felling wedge banger.

where did you get the angle gauge?

  • @rickywrenn

Did you compare it after grinding to match the others you compared it against previously?

I got a video in the works about exactly that! Stay tuned! I mean it's Ochsenkopf steel still made in Germany as far as I know, so...that's generally good stuff.

Well believe it man! We're still watching I am very interested in which is the best axe. I don't need an axe the tops pops off after a few swing or chopping logs!
So is your axe still chopping after 4 years? Any issues after 4 years besides having it sharpen??

isn't the stihl designed more to split with rather than chopping with?

    • @BushcraftSisyphus
      @BushcraftSisyphus  5 лет назад +1

Good question. Designed: Yes. Advertised: No. It's a good splitter, yes, with the bullet proof overstrike collar, quality steel and super beefy handle. But is it the "Universal Pro Forestry Axe?" Soon I'll have a vid out with a modified edge that makes it a totally different axe (in a good way in my opinion). Thank you for watching!

How much wood splitting do professional forestry workers do? I'm guessing not much..

The name "universal axe" implements that it is something in between a felling axe and a splitting axe. So advertised: Yes. Is it fair to compare that with felling axes: No.

I have two Stihl axes one is the one you have and another is closer to your camp axes.
Tomorrow a trip to Tractor Supply so who know maybe another axe ;-) that said I am going for mower.

That's because it's not a splitting ax, it's a chopping ax. It's not to slit with

I didnt think it was a good comparison seeing how it's advertised. If i were to base my decision to buy on this video alone it would be thumbs down. I also know there is more to the axe then meets the video eye lol. Love to see it sharpened.
