  • I really wanted to like this axe more. Classic German styling and very good materials, but it's limitations and the need for repair after the first outing left me underwhelmed. I'm not giving up on it just yet, but the first impression was a resounding "meh".

    The derisive comment you made about it being a large hatchet is exactly the reason why I bought it. Although I do agree with you that it seems a little lighter than I expected, but that is what gives it the amazing swing speed!
    I also had the same experience you did when I was splitting wood. It was constantly getting stuck.
    I have a half a dozen older axes that are so hard they break the teeth out of a file, and those old head designs don't get stuck near as much.
    My hand axe has a heavier head than this one. I was looking for something a "little" lighter with a slightly longer handle. This axe almost fills the bill, but, like you said; the head could be a little heavier.

    I just picked one up, i love stihl products, I chopped down some small trees, noticed slight head movement also, not thrilled with that, and picked 1 of 10 with the tightest fit, best grain patern, for 40$ its a good deal, just wish it was fit a bit better..

      I picked one after reveiws and set some other wedges in the head ..guess I see how it goes

      @@wesg2272 yea I ended up adding a barrel wedge in front and also a flat wedge towards the back of the eye, it really made a difference, i havent used it much, but enough to see its not moving now.

    I have the Sthil chain saw and weed wacker. Their stuff is built like a tank. Im thinking about going 3 for 3. Ive been eyeing a light weight axe for hunting and camping.

      The German pattern axes are nice but have a lot of hand shock. I fixed the Sthil axe by adding a second wedge. Another one to look at in the same weight class would be the Council Tool boy's axe. The steel on the CT is softer than the Sthil, but it takes a great edge. Can't go wrong with either.

    Seems to be the problem with most axes out there except the high end ones like Gransfors; the heads always come loose. Sad because many of these would be nice except for this issue. I even purchased a new Snow and Nealley axe and it was loose after the first few hits. I ended up soaking it in antifreeze for a couple days and it's stayed tight (oil soaks in instead of water so it stays longer) but it would be nice to have it solid from the start. I bit the bullet and purchased a couple of Gransfors and have not had that problem through lots of use. Not sure what the difference is but there has to be something they're doing.

    good review. I like everything I own with the stihl name on it. A boy axe is smaller than I like, and I like a maul for splitting.

      Apparently the head loosening up on these isn't too uncommon, but if not for that, I think they accomplished what they set out to make. A good quality, light duty, general purpose axe. It's lighter and shorter than I would normally look for in a general purpose axe, but maybe they figure you should use one of their chainsaws for anything larger, lol.

    Curious where you are at with Your STHL now ? Also curious if you don't like how light it is then why didn't you go for the next size up ? (its 1250g)
    If you still don't like it then I'd be willing to buy the head off you maybe if the shipping isn't crazy.
    I purchased the STHL hatchet 3 years ago and love it so much I bought 2 more. The steel is crazy hard. I do not consider your axe to be a splitter. Its a deep biting head with almost no cheeks. Its not designed for splitting at all, its falling axe, and I bet a dandy. I want one just for the head and will rehandle it as soon as I get it.
    Of note, STHL axes are made by the 300 plus year old German brand "OX"

    might be ok for a camp ax , ant got enough handle to be swinging on something big or busting wood . good video!!

    I take it you didn’t sharpen it first, as well you do no good hitting in the notch all the time.

  • @arcforceworld

    Thats basically a re-badged Ochsenkopf. Not too sure id take that thing out falling, but it'd probably be great for some bucking and processing.

    I suspect it would make a decent limbing, thinning axe given a good work over, you could lose literally half that handle. That and a reprofile of the bit, tap the wedge in good and I reckon it's be a goer. £30 in the UK, I'm going to give one a go.

      @WiggysWilderness  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks! Hopefully a new wedge can fix this one. If it does, I think it'll be a good axe to carry around in the truck. It's not really something I would use for any kind of extended work, but taking care of storm debris in the roadway and things like that might be about right for it.

    • @WiggysWilderness
      @WiggysWilderness  7 лет назад +1

      I can't recall the exact price but it was around $40-50. I actually bought it last year right before hunting season and I'm just now getting around to using it. I went back to the Stihl dealer I bought it from to check on the exact price before the video but they were sold out.

    Where is that axe made??

    • @WiggysWilderness
      @WiggysWilderness  6 лет назад +3

      It says "Made in the UK" but judging by the head and handle design I'm sure it's made at Ochsenkopf (Ox Head) in Germany and just branded with the Stihl name.

    • @zombiefighterof1987
      @zombiefighterof1987 6 лет назад

      It's not an Ochsenkopf, looking at the head and the handle, mainly the shoulder, it looks like a Bison brand axe.

  • @oldtimer4567
    @oldtimer4567 6 лет назад

    Wouldn't even consider bringing one home, if I had to spend the money for it. Grasping the handle at the shoulder is like a grasping a 2x4, & that's way too thick, bulky & unnecessary for an axe handle. Being that it's C60 steel, (which is just 1060 steel with a different designation), I would suggest one buy the Council Tool boys axe, which is also 1060 steel & get either the 24" or 28" handle for about $35-$40.

    Put it in water let it soak that will swell up the handle tighten it up.

  • @scotthill6807

    Nice review. I'd soak that head in some Boiled Linseed Oil so the haft will swell inside the eye of the head. Hopefully that will solve your head movement issue. Thank you for the review.
