Pity you started out with an illegal serve and hitting it from the top "tap bounce bounce" example.

Maybe, but I find that some people have difficulty even getting the ball to bounce on their side first so this action really helps them. Once they get that basic serve it is usually fairly easy for them to modify it to be a legal serve.
