I need to be honest here and I don't think Twitter will be the next platform for photographers, nor does it appeal to me personally. I think it's time for an IG contender - what IG was back in the old days. Healthy algorithm, reach, no excessive advertisement crap, no heavy focus on videos. Tiktok came out of nowhere, so I'm still hoping someone somewhere will come out with a new platform for photographers / artists / creators.

Pixelfed is dropping their iOS app soon. Basically a stripped down version of instagram with chronological feed, no ads, no reels, open source, private. I think it will be the go-to privacy app for sharing photos with friends and family, back to the basics without reels of random people, ads jammed down your throat and your data used to manipulate the way you vote. Just photos with friends and family

It's a frustrating thing; tumblr is functionally a much better platform for photographers than both Insta and Twitter, but the audience isn't anywhere near as big. That said, tumblr is on a bit of a comeback path (it's now owned by the people who own Wordpress and they're apparently pretty focused on building a good community), so maybe we'll see some useful positive growth there.

I'm going to go against the tide here and say that social media has killed photography. It is an endless soul less stream, a glut of images, ad nauseam. I am lucky enough to have my own gallery, it's small with not a lot of traffic but it's very gratifying to be able to show my work in real life. Real prints, real books, real cards, real conversations. People will never be able to walk into my gallery and say, oh I saw that photo on Facebook or Instagram or Twitter. I'll go one step farther and say that social media has just about destroyed our society. People don't even talk to each other anymore. I went off of social media over a year ago and I've never been happier. Yeah, probably the wrong audience. 😁

"interacting to grow" on social media - I still feel this gets quite overlooked, even considering it's got 'social' in the title.

I definitely agree but would add that Twitter is a good compliment. I'm in the world of sports and so many people use Twitter but also Instagram. My goal is to shoot for an NFL team and over the past year I've built up a great connection with many professional sports photogs on instagram and twitter. I would say that the majority who have been in the industry for a while use IG primarily, where the younger crowd uses both IG and twitter. But at the end of the day it comes down to what your peers use the most. I've gotten more interaction through twitter from athletes re-tweeting my content but have found more success networking and getting my images seen/appreciated by those currently in the positions i seek through IG, and at the end of the day those people are the ones looking to hire and will know me from my work. But BOTH are so crucial, just depends if you care more about everyone seeing your stuff or a smaller group.

This was awesome. It’s been frustrating watching IG turn it’s back on the community that utilized it so well. I didn’t have a massive following but it sucks. Recently started a twitter page for my modeling photography and even the early engagement feel much better

Y’all heard of Grainery? Rn is specifically made for film, but the developer is working on adding digital whenever the app has enough capacity. It’s a browser app but soon to be on android and iOS I believe. I’m hoping it’s the next photo sharing app rather than Twitter!

Yep, I left Instagram last week because I just couldn't stand the waste of time and energy anymore dealing with glitches, bugs, and buffering times with notifications, comments, DM's, stories... Everything, literally *everything* in Instagram has issues. And now that they've implemented this ridiculous tiktok UI where the written description is no longer black text on white, but on TOP of the photo so that you can't even read it properly, that was the straw that broke the camel's back. Let it crash and burn, honestly.

honestly photography in general has become so saturated and visual art has been pushed so much to its limits it is all extremely underwhelming. not many photos are impressive anymore

Photo books are the best alternative. Own your own books that can inspire. Instagram is a visual asylum. Interaction with people is hazardous to your health.

    • @anima6035

I so agree! I recently realised that out of hundreds of photographers I follow I'm only truly impressed by maybe 2 or 3.
Another commenter here said they feel reels etc have led photographers away from creative image making and instead they are fulfilling requirements/meeting expectations in order to keep up with the group and the algorithm. I feel like that is very true.
Another thing I have noticed, and perhaps this isn't something new, is the weird subculture of copying and even straight up stealing images on Instagram... Also not really conducive to creativity imo.

    • @anima6035
      @anima6035 2 года назад +1

@@cameronh338 dont give up! But focusing on other things is a good idea in my opinion. Art and the human brain are so weird, we are learning even when we don't realise it! "Extracurricular" activities can only broaden our scope and deepen our thought processes.

I feel like that's most things now. We see the best of everything on the internet... I play guitar and it's honestly so boring now. Everyone can play well. From age 6-60 yrs. It use to be a spectacle to see great players back in the day because the space was so narrow.

  • @jerriwhitephoto

I also want to point out that Instagram seems to enable people with huge followings or a celeb status to post more explicit content, yet I barely show someone’s back crack in an image and get reported and shadowbanned. Moreover, the amount of spam messages is out of control. And as much as they sure love to crack down on photographers who shoot nude/ boudoir, they don’t seem to take as much action against adults grooming children, following kids pages and writing how some teen is beautiful (and even more disturbing things)
Instagram is trash but venturing out to more socials in order to gain recognition is such a pain but what else can we do?
I think we need to maybe focus less on scoring in the digital verse and work on getting published, having exhibitions and building a fan base IRL

I want a high-end online gallery of photographic art. An online museum. No fucking video, no text, no comments. Just an elegant presentation with captions for location and camera, film, lens etc. Nothing else. In other words, Instagram without video, without comments, without likes. More elegant platform font. Period. Shutterfly looks cheap and camera clubby.

And what about going to something more personal such as using Adobe portfolio or Wordpress and create a website.
You can still link new post on twitter if you need to inform more people, it is like a virtual gallery.
