the big problem with pinterest as a graphic designer is that... it shows the competition RIGHT THERE with your stuff and the client is overwhelmed by images that are not even related to you.
The tip of posting your shoots to your website is gold. I think if anything, this experience with IG is a reminder not to rely on external platforms to be a “home” for your work. I love the idea of sharing more of my shoots on my site and linking them out to different places. Definitely going to give that a try!
Instagram is no longer a photo platform which sucks it’s just a copycat of whatever becomes cool and has become a bloated mess. I think something will come along to replace it but I don’t think the app to replace it exists. I’m uneasy of Pinterest Even after watching this video, I admittedly do not believe I’ll be willing to put in the effort to it. I’ve always found Pinterest to be overwhelming and have a cumbersome UI. (That’s just me…) I’ll be giving Pinterest another shot soon but just wanted to give my honest opinion as it stands now. As you’ve probably seen Peter McKinnon did a video using Vero. Would love your opinion on it in a Part 3. Personally, at the moment I enjoy it but I still don’t see it as the replacement.
Very informative video, Daniel! Thank you for the details. I love Pinterest for finding inspiration and have recently started using idea pins on my page.
I keep seeing Pinterest promoted as an alternative to Instagram and the evidence is there that it can get your images out there. But I don't actually know anyone who uses it.
I know heaps of people that use it just as an image search tool. I’ve tried and given up a couple of times. Might give it another go and invest more time in it.
4:10 pins have like infinite lifespan tbh. I have pins that keep coming back to huge repin phases every couple of months. Legit the best platform for ever green content 🔥
Okay spit-balling here - how about newborn photographers? My first thought is lifestyle sessions - post something that shows off the nursery since Pinterest is where we plan our nursery to its very last detail. Would it be worth blogging about pregnancy/postpartum-related things and posting those to Pinterest, even though they aren’t photography related? I know when I was pregnant I went to Pinterest for labor affirmations, etc. 🤔 what am I missing here?? How else can a NB photographer maximize Pinterest content?
Best place is to post to your own website however you need traffic to your website and that is the rub. You have to pay ( expensive ads) and do effective SEO to be found. Pinterest isn't a viable destination imo, apart from well documented copyright issues it aggregates everyone else's related topics. And you must pay to promote pins. Pinterest is good for its users ideas but doesn't necessarily send traffic to your site.
I HIGHLY suggest only using Pinterest as a photographer IF all you shoot are G rated, straight photography. If you are trying to showcase edgy fashion work that shows ANY amount of nudity, partial nudity, clothed people who are considered too sexual, fetish, or deviant images, you whole account can (and probably will) be deactivated. Thats even if your images are on a secret board. We're NOT talking pornography. We're talking images that are dark styling (leather) or goths (in leather) are tagged as fetish. 2 women kissing if they are younger can be considered sexual or maybe even deviant (but if it's a wedding photo of 2 heterosexuals it's okay). I know of someone whose fashion image from Vogue was tagged as a violation, there have been people trying to showcase their fashion work where there was side boob (no nipple showing just side boob) that was considered too risque. So sure, if all you shoot is pablum, Pinterest is great to get eyeballs. BUT if you do anything outside of the flowers, it's a wedding, food photography, kind of work, I really don't suggest wasting your time b/c your account could go away and they do NOT have a help desk that is willing to clarify their actions or retain you even as a paying client/biz account.
as much as I like this, I would like to know where people wanting to just show and sell their photos should post to? I don't like 500px as a platform, it just doesn't get enough reach with non-photographers.
Instagram needs to go back to the highly curated Instagram feeds with DSLR high quality photos. I don’t want to see your blurry ass photos on my timeline!!
@@ekphotography When Vero came into the picture 3-4 years ago, people had issues with the CEO, which is one reason why some didn't join it. Come 2022, I feel like most people are jumping onto that ship after Peter Mckinnon's video. As much as I see the benefit of photographers having another space to post their work, are we just joining another "trend" where one person says this, and we all follow? If Vero is more beneficial than Instagram, I'm happy to accept that I'm wrong. In this case, I feel like it's just another Instagram alternative until the latter decides to fix their app (which I doubt will ever happen).
I like Vero, I love how the photos look and how there's not a lot of "noise" like ads and reels. Sure there's room for improvement (i.e. searching for photographers) but it gives a calm vibe when scrolling through photos.
@@MangoStreet People on IG do steal photos yes but at least there is an easy way to claim / report theft. I know so many small brands that just rip photos off Pinterest. At least if that happens on IG they usually tag you. Vero is basically what IG used to be but with better features; high-res photos, more quick and easy privacy preferences per post. Most importantly no algorithm.
@@MangoStreet All photographers know SS is shiiiet. And one more guy shoving it down our throats we dont need in the community. Want to get paid? Do photography! The end
we’ve been using squarespace for up to five websites since 2013 and have always felt it was the best platform. we only work with brands we actually use and love. we transitioned from being professional photographers / video editors (meaning our full time income coming from those ventures) to making these free tutorials full time. now that this is where our main source of income comes from, the only way to make money in the photography niche is by doing sponsor spots. if you watch photography / filmmaking tutorials, you should expect that anyone making them full time needs to support themselves by getting their videos sponsored. that’s just the way it works.
I like the fact how many videos are telling Instagram is dead, so satisfying
the big problem with pinterest as a graphic designer is that... it shows the competition RIGHT THERE with your stuff and the client is overwhelmed by images that are not even related to you.
I suppose the same thing would also affect photographers who are selling prints.
I mean that’s competition nowadays tbh and that’s where creating your own style that stands out comes into play.
Lol right

This is an insightful video! Thanks for breaking it down. Pinterest way from now on, it seems like an amazing platform to share and gain inspiration.
Agreed, I never looked at Pinterest in this way. This deep dive watt eye opening.

i think vero is not bad .
I will like to know your take on Vero.
Vero is what I just joined and like so far.
I'm waiting to see if part 3 will be Vero 😂
Love another Mango Street vid, always informative and brings the best energy 🙌🏼

wild how important images are in today's society and yet it feels like there's no social media home for them rn. preciate the ideas from this vid 🙏🏾
There are but some people have issues with them. (Thinking mainly of Flickr, but I think 500px is worse.)
It’s all about being adaptable. Your ideas for Pinterest are phenomenal. Don’t quit Instagram but learn to use it as well

As always..super insightful vid ❤️❤️
VSCO GRID!
I hope it’s covered but if not, I’m curious about fine art, street, food, etc. photographer’s who want to try and sell their work. Thanks!
this is very helpful! thank you
What about Béhance
Use VSCO
Is it good with discoverability?
Any thoughts about Behance?

What are your thoughts on Vero for Photograpers??
For a long time!
First from Tanzania 🔥
thank you for tNice tutorials it helped a lot
Vero? Anyone?

Post to pinterest and direct traffic to your own website

Love the position you have on this, do you think Pinterest is more of a search engine than a social platform? Thanks brotha!
yeah, i think of pinterest as a visual search engine first and foremost.
talk about VERO
VERO.
♥️♥️♥️
Instagram has big big big community. It will be a good fight to take on him.
welp at least we have grainery for film photographers :D
At last, someone who's not recommending Vero. Love it!
Why? Seems pretty cool actually! Better than most things out there.

Hey first!!!
hey ebuka!
How dare you beat me 😂
Feels like there is no good platform for photography anymore really, they all are mediocre in different ways
Pinterest sounds good
anyone else getting sick of all the work and platforms we need to keep switching to and from?
yep
2nd :/
Instagram is dead not only for fotografers.
Guys, every Pinterest user steals photos via screenshots. Why don’t you mention Vero?
ppl steal photos for IG too - it's the internet. we don't have much to say about vero just yet.

yeah, i wouldn’t want any person cranking out helpful tutorials for five years to get paid for their time and effort either.

Dude where is your chick? She's like literally the only reason I watch.
Pinterest is.. very horrible
I’m a new photographer and trying to gain followers on insta seems too much work if only reels are getting promoted, guess I’ll try Pinterest too
