I'm going to start considering people like Aileen, Michael Glassman, and Robbie as reoccurring guest stars on your channel! Love all Aileen's knowledge for this video.
OMG, I misread your title as BAREFOOT Roses! I thought Oh WOW, I've never heard of them before! 🤣 Magic Mix 20:48 Wonderful video with oodles of info. Thanks!
Just ordered my first David Austin! This is perfect timing! I needed to know all of this. More informative videos please! Some of us need the basics on occasion. Thanks!!
I wished this nursery was closer to me. We have a huge problems with gophers here on the central coast. The gopher will eat through those soft gophers cages. I have better luck with the harder wire cages. I’m sure Van Winden’s has the stronger ones. Happy gardening 🌻🌻
I’m convinced that the reason the plants at Van Winden’s look so happy is because they’re feeding off the positive vibes of the dream team staff. 🌺 I learned so much today, thank you Aileen and Janey! 🪴🇨🇦
Knockout roses are amazing in the landscape. I have Popcorn drift! They are a creamy white/very light yellow. Huge impact from far away if planted in a group. Only gets 2 ft or less. Highly recommend.
Welcome back to Napa! I'll be adding 5 roses to my collection this season... which I'll be getting from Van Winden's. Thank you for the reminder to run out and get them before they're gone!
What a fun and informative video. Well done girls! So many great choices! You have me so excited to see my roses! While I grow 120 roses … here in the Midwest we have a long time to wait! But we’ll enjoy watching you while we wait! 💐
My comment has nothing to do with this video as I do not grow roses. I have a request after looking at some of Jim Putnam's videos of garden tours. I would love to see some garden tours in our zone 9b in California. So much RUclips gardening content is in colder Eastern zones. I love to watch and learn but I often wish there would be more info of our zone 9b. Espcially difficult for me to grow are azaela's and hydrangea. Thanks for being a voice in California!
Thanks Janey for introducing Ailene to me. Great video information. I live in zone 8B. Off subject though, I want to know about the pants Ailene was wearing, what brand are they. Love them, they would be great in my PNW region to wear while gardening here.
Hi Jannie, Happy New Year 🎉 thank you so much for this video. It was full of so much information. Now I know what I’m looking for. I wish much success in your garden this coming year!
She posted a little note “paper” with the magic mix ingredients on the screen towards the end of the video, I just grabbed a screenshot of it… Van Winden’s Magic Rose Mix: 2 Tablespoons: So-Po-Mag 1 Cup: Alfalfa Meal 1/2 Cup: Rose Fertilizer
She didn’t put it below like she stated…fast forward to that spot it was mentioned in the video and screen shot it. You can screen shot the Van Winden’s Magic Rose Mix recipe @ 20:53 in the video…
Every time you visit, I always want to ask if they'd let you come and show us their gardens. The Japanese beetles are about to have me give up on Roses, I had an insane amount last summer. This yr I'm getting some assassin bugs, hoping they at least help keep me sane.
I want roses and when my garden is ready I want some! However MN has Japanese Beatles pretty bad…do I bother with a broken heart or stick to hydrangeas lol!? If there is something to treat let me know.
This rose fertilizer recipe is specifically for roses but it could be good for other plants too as it enhances color on blooms and foliage. Potassium encourages root growth and increases plant resistance to disease. Magnesium aids in the green coloring of plants. Sulfur aids in the use of nitrogen fertilizer by the plant and helps lower a soils pH.
Love roses but we have Japanese beetles in Colorado. Sadly I’m pulling out my beautiful David Austin roses because the beetles just destroy them every summer. So disappointing! California isn’t too far away from Colorado so I’m sure the beetles are headed your way.
We have Japanese beetles here in SW. Pennsylvania but this is how I control them - every morning I go out with a small bucket of soapy water and knock them into it - they are busy mating and eating and oblivious to you. They drown and I toss the water in the woods later. If you do this conscientiously every day in beetle season for 2 years you will have very few beetles left - they burrow into the ground after mating and then re-emerge in summer so you are interrupting their life cycle without using chemicals. Hope this helps!
Is there a way to help ground squirrels move away? I have a ground squirrel that recently moved into my small flower garden. It digs huge holes and creates havoc! I tried large amounts of coffee grounds (thank you, Starbucks) and it seems to help for a week then the ground squirrel returns.
Do roses do well being transplanted AFTER the barefoot stage? We get pretty blazing hot up in Lakeport, CA where I live and I’m wondering if I should start in a slightly shadier area to not cook them, but end-game I’d like them over on the other side of my yard. Where there’s a lot of sun.
You're not so far away from Napa! :) If you want to play it safe let your bare root rose "root out" in its 5gallon nursery can and then transplant it into the ground in late April. In general roses want FULL SUN but also even moisture by their roots.
@@vanwindensgardencenter I know! You guys are just over the mountains, basically lol. That’s a good idea with the 5 gallon bucket. I’m working on my soil around here and have some pretty rocky clay soil but I’ll find a decent spot. Once I buy them 😁. Thank you!
Squirrels are my biggest garden enemy. They dig out Everything I plant. It's like as soon as the soil has been disturbed they dig in and around and actually pull the plant right out. It's a constant battle
Aileen is amazing! What a wealth of knowledge she has. Her garden must be amazing. (Janey, would Aileen like to show us around her own garden?)
Aileen is a treasure - Van Winden;s is lucky to have her! I learn so much when she is on your channel.
She is a fantastic teacher- so articulate and able to teach key principles in order so that even a beginner can retain the information. ❤️🌸🇨🇦
Super woman 👩 ❤❤❤
Love Aileen! What an amazing staff member she is for that garden centre! And her knowledge is jawdropping. thank you for visiting with her again!
I'm going to start considering people like Aileen, Michael Glassman, and Robbie as reoccurring guest stars on your channel! Love all Aileen's knowledge for this video.
This young lady is amazing. Her wealth of knowledge and help is amazing. Thank you ❤.
I enjoy and learn so much from these Van Winden videos you’ve done. Their staff are not only very knowledgeable, but they’re so nice!
She is simply marvelous! So smart!

I love the drift roses.

We do have the stronger ones! So sorry to hear about your gopher problem. They can be so frustrating!
Janey! Kicking the New Year off right! Love that you travel around and do these videos for us!! Thanks for ALL you do for us.
Thanks Janey and Aileen another amazing VanWinden’s video full of great info. Adding the magic mix this year to my roses.

Wonderful to watch this on a 25* morning here in GA!
Thanks for the great info, Janey! I am going to try the “secret mix” this season! Your Eden Rose was gorgeous last season!😍💐
I’m so close to that wonderful nursery, maybe a couple hours drive from Placerville I think.
I. Must. Go!!!
See you soon!
Aileen is so funny ! 🌲💚🙃
Aileen is back!

Aileen is wearing Britt Utility pants from the brand Dovetail. Our staff loves the Dovetail brand!
Fantastic interview ladies 😊
I learned so much! Thank you for this awesome video!
Such a great video!! I can’t wait to see your selections.
Thank you 😊
I read that video title as “BareFOOT is Better” which I totally agree with ! 😂😂
Wow, such great information, thank you!! 🌹🌹🌹

Good tip!
I’m so excited to go rose shopping. I have a garden arch to fill. Whoop!
That's exciting :D

This is so informative!!! Thank you!!!
My bareroot roses I bought last year all had rosette disease, so I think I’m going to make sure I get healthy ones this year!
Love this info...
THE GREATEST ROSE OF ALL TIME....NOT AN OPINION.... NO, ITS NOT PEACE....ITS DOUBLE DELIGHT.....OLD SKOOL, BUT THE GOAT!!!!😍🌹
I’m not seeing the recipe for the secret mix you mentioned at the end of this video.

I still have 13
Did you ever find a Delicioso Nectarine Tree? Does it go by another name? GREAT video :)

Is this magic mix recipe per one rose plant or more than one plant? And what other plant could this work on?

Potassium encourages root growth and increases plant resistance to disease. Magnesium aids in the green coloring of plants. Sulfur aids in the use of nitrogen fertilizer by the plant and helps lower a soils pH.
Loved this information on roses. I am assuming that the secret mix discussed at the end of the video can be used for any zone, correct?
It should work in any zone but E.B. Stone products are not available nationwide.
Sol Pro Mag ????? 🌲💚🙃
Love roses but we have Japanese beetles in Colorado. Sadly I’m pulling out my beautiful David Austin roses because the beetles just destroy them every summer. So disappointing! California isn’t too far away from Colorado so I’m sure the beetles are headed your way.
We have them bad here in NC too 😢 🪲
Same here in MD. This yr I'm trying assassin bugs to help keep me sane.

I do that too, I could all day 24/7 and still have millions. Did you know they can lay up to 60,000 eggs, 3 times over one summer.
Is there a way to help ground squirrels move away? I have a ground squirrel that recently moved into my small flower garden. It digs huge holes and creates havoc! I tried large amounts of coffee grounds (thank you, Starbucks) and it seems to help for a week then the ground squirrel returns.
Is the magic mix recipe per rose plant?
Yes, correct!
She sure knowes her roses
What is so po mag? And where to get or how to make ?
Great video! Just getting into roses. Are the magic mix quantities the amount you use per plant?
Yes you have that correct.

Magic mix 2x a year and rose fertilizer every month? 🌲💚🙃
That could be perfect depending on what rose fertilizer you're using...
I can’t wait to plant!

I didn't see the magic mix recipe down below...... did I miss it?
It wasn't added to the show notes... it's 2TBL E.B. Stone Sul Po Mag, 1CUP Alfalfa Meal, + normal Rose fertilizer
I didn’t have good luck with bare root 😢
Oh no! Do you think you got a grade #1 rose?
@@vanwindensgardencenter it was a David Austin rose , I can’t remember what level it was. Claire Austin. 😟
I know the title says "bareroot" but I read bareFoot like 3 times 😂
❤❤❤❤

I wish I didn’t have so many deer😢
Oh no! It is quite difficult to protect roses against deer, as you know!
You had me at cheaper..
Bare root season is great if you want to snag a deal!
Do they ship?
Van Winden's does not ship, sorry.
A lot of great information! Thank you so much!
