Hi, Laura. I am a Consulting Rosarian via the American Rose Society. I garden in Zone 7. Gardeners in warmer zones do not bury the bud union. We winterize our roses by covering the bud union with mulch, then pull back the mulch in the spring once there is no chance for an overnight freeze. I love your videos!
What kind of mulch? I have been leaving some leaves on mine over the winter. The rise bush is up by my house and I have a big tree that drops leaves late fall. I have noticed the leaves blow up under the rose bushes and they grow really good in the spring. Is this good enough?
ive been watching videos on bare root roses for days and i must say that you are the ONLY ONE who demonstrated how deep to plant the rose. holding the bare root rose to the camera and intentionally pointing to where the graft union is and how deep to bury it (AT 9MIN: 35 SECS). THANK YOU!!!!
Watching in April 2024 and it’s so amazing to go back and see how much progress has been made on this property! So beautiful! Thank you for the ability to refresh my mind on planting bare root roses 🙏♥️
So happy you don’t mention covid. So much stressful and anxiety new every where. It’s so nice to watch your videos like the world is normal still. I need it Love you guys. Aloha from Hawaii
Your mom seems like the sweetest lady! Would she ever like to be featured in a video and talk about her gardening background? I just love her personality. That’s obviously where you get yours. 😁
I know everyone is different, but I love this style of video....busy, yet quieter, with natural sounds. I love the simple sounds that come with gardening and being outside vs music. I appreciate the work that went in to the camera setup also. Sorry to ramble, but really nice. 🍀
Hi Laura, I was surprised to learn in this video that you bury the graft union. With so many other grafted plants (like a Japanese maple for example) it seems like you have to make sure to not bury the grafts. Could you explain why roses should have that part buried? Thank you!
I was confused by this as well. I've only ever planted a potted Rose and the graft union is above soil, why would it be different than a bare root rose?
I’m glad I’m not the only one confused by that. I don’t know much about grafting though so I figured she knows what she’s doing. Maybe she’ll address it in the recap video.
Ok, so I just looked it up and it is recommended if you’re planting roses in zone 5 and below to bury the grafting union to protect it from freezing temps. Zone 6 and above can plant them with the grafting union above the soil. So that confirms that she really knows what she’s doing!
I thought the same thing! To avoid rot and damage to the plant you always plant so the graft is above the soil. I have super heavy clay soil and I think my rose would die if I buried the graft.
I will never not be jealous of how she just steps on the spade and it chunks down so easily. We have so much glacial till in the part of PA I live that I can't dig a hole for an annual or bulb and not hit a bunch of rocks let alone anything bigger.
I faithfully watch both yours and Erin's RUclips videos and some others too. I love how you guys mention each other, know where one may have more knowledge on a certain topic, etc. Gardeners in general are a friendly and helpful community!
Oh, what a thought--"sunset to moonlight to sunrise GARDEN," New Concept in garden design. Then we could use most colors in this concept at one end or the other!
It is so relaxed there compared to here. We are in full lockdown as are all our nurseries and we have social distancing. I miss my garden centre so much and cant wait to go back (No planting this year but i did paint flowers on my shed lol) Ty for doing your videos I love them you and your family are a joy to watch x *Love from Scotland*
Just in time! I just got my bare roots of Ancient Mariner, Jubilee Celebration, and Desdamonia in yesterday. They’re sitting in water and will be planting at my house and at my parent’s.
I love every every video you offer us- never miss! I never see you preparing soil before planting with compost-just bio-tone. Since I am quarantining and not going out as much as possible I don't have any compost to help my terribly hard clay soil. But I do have plant tone from last fall- yay! Is that enough?
Just planted my first David Austin roses this week. A Roald Dahl tree rose and a Carding Mill shrub rose. They had very long roots, probably around 18-24” long! I’m hoping I didn’t tamp the soil too hard and smash down the roots. Should there be some air pockets?
The soft apricot and butter yellow of these ones are just stunning. Can’t wait to see them in bloom. Wow! Your new land is huge and that’s a lot of fence. It looks great with the new fence around it. Can’t wait to see you play in your new playground!!! Stay safe. Love & Hugs! 💜🤗🦋🦜🌷☀️
I always wonder how much faster her day would go if she didn’t have to walk across the street to set up a camera in the truck to walk back across the street to get the roses to walk back across the street to get in the truck 😂 Trying to capture all of the walking clips would be so frustratingly extra for me.
Ahhh coffee with Laura and peaceful planting, loved the bird that was talking about 11:05 I think. Those are amazing roses and it will be so fun to see them bloom. Your mom was so funny with her question about " do you want to see the new things?" LOL like of course we want to see the new things and those wall plaques were so pretty. I find it hard to believe that you actually walked out of the garden center with only the roses!!!!!
I live in Utah, Zone 6b, and I LOVED when you dug in that shovel to plant the first rose. The way the soil broke up when you pulled it up tells me you have the exact same soil as we do: clay, clay, and more clay. It gives me hope that my garden can look beautiful, too!
BEAUTIFUL Roses, I LOVE Roses so much, we only have a small garden that does not get much sun but we are planning a future move with a nice sunny garden for lots of Roses, thanks so much for sharing Laura, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend ahead XXXX
Laura, I live in Southern CA and we have a huge gopher problem. I plant just about everything in Root Guards. The gophers have never gotten any of the plants I put in them. I get them at my garden center.
Do you want to see some Stuff, lol she is asking the right person, love the color of the Roses, I transplanted two of my Roses last fall ,now I have two Roses and A baby Rose emerging from the soil 🙂
Love seeing your mom in the vlogs, would also love to see latest tour of Andrew Seeds! Also very happy that you guys remained open. Sending love from Ireland.
Laura, Please don’t laugh when I say this, but all this time that I’ve been watching your video’s, I had no idea what David Austin Roses were. I know, I know, I’m a novice at this, but I’m learning, lol! I was thinking that it was a “brand”, which it is, but they are so much more. I did a little research (which is what I do when I know that I don’t know), and I now understand the importance of the “brand”. I learn so much from you, so any info you can provide will be helpful. Thanks Laura
Laura it was surprised when you went to pick up your box of Roses it was amazing that you didn't go home with a truck full of more new plants! Ya Ya you had flower control. So thanks for the idea's how to plant roses. Nice job planting your Roses, the peach color is awesome.
Hi Laura, in the spring I'm getting Old fashioned radish pink roses. It is suckers or runners off my Mom's plant. Was thinking of first taking them off her huge rose bush. Someone told me to replant them into potatoes which a hole which has been drilled into the centre of the potato. Then planted in the ground. Adding a mixture of manure & soil which has been mixed before handed, then added around the roses. Have you ever heard of this done before? The other thing was thinking of trying is getting a different kind of roses, & planting them in huge pots (barrel type of pots)beside my driveway on bothsides. Then have garden boxes filled with lavender , & possible poppies or aster flowers planted with the purple lavender. The garden boxes are going to be a dark brown color. Which should stand up with the coloured flowers, & the repurposed emergency ladders, I remade into to a border line on both sides of the driveway. Which are made up of rope threaded through the rings of the ladder. But only using the top hole of the top of the side of one ladder rung. The ladder rungs are a mixture of colors for each rung. I have a huge ditch which is deep on both sides of my driveway filled with a mixture of grass & last year white daisies & Indian paint brushes also showed up the ditches too. So what do you think?
Isn’t there something so,wonderful and exciting about digging a whole in the soil? Knowing that something beautiful ( hopefully) will be coming emerging from it!! AND YES I WANT TO SHOP MOM!!
Hi Laura! I received my DAVID Austin roses yesterday and you made my wish come true.. I thought to myself *wonder if Laura could show “how to” thank you o much .. Happy Gardening ☀️🌸🌼🌺🌷💐
I plant my bare root Rose's differently. I make a hill of soil in the hole. Then place the rose on the hill, spreading the roots around the hill, then fill in hole. That's the way I learned to do it. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks🌷🌺
Could you do a video with shorter shrubs, like 3’ and under? Or do a specific update on some of shrubs you planted in the videos featured on proven winners site? Thanks!
Wow, Erin did good. Those are probably my favorite DA rose. That color is almost mysterious. It’s not orange or peach, or yellow but wow is it beautiful. Tfs and I’m excited about all the changes for y’all. 👏🏻💕👏🏻
Roald Dahl was my absolute favorite author for many many years growing up, heck I still enjoy his books now, so now I have to get myself some of these❤ And that color is my favorite!!
Do you plant all bare roots in this manner? (like raspberries, gooseberries, fruit trees?) The part that surprised me was partially burying the crown. Thank you!
Add some noise makers to the rose area to keep the goffers away. windmills with clankers on them. until you get the problem under control. I love the gator, so quiet and all you hear is the crunch of gravel.
I wish I had known to bury the bud union when I planted my first rose. During a hard winter the grafted section broke off and I was left with just the root stock. At least I learned about wind rock and won’t make that mistake again.
Do you spray your roses regularly to dissuade the mites that cause red rosette disease? If so, what do you recommend to use and how frequently? Thank you!
It might be time to broaden our resources and knowledge base on "critters" and our practices that intersect with wilder ones. Your state's Dept. Of Conservation resources would be a place to start.
I just had two roses delivered from Jackson & Perkins, the roses didn't look near as pretty as yours, so I called them and they are sending one replacement and being they were out of one of them I had to order a different one 😢. Hope these will look better and not sad. Their planting instructions were hard to understand, you however cleared everything up and I just finished replanting them! I am going to give these a chance but my hopes are not high. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and your beautiful garden!
I’m so happy to know you’re going to still trial the moonlight garden!!! I can’t wait to see how you develop a space under a restriction! It’s gonna be beautiful!
QUESTION I did some winter sowing of Delphiniums. When should I start feeding them and with what? They have their first true Leaves and about an inch tall.
Hello there Laura, as a confirmed David Austin Rose fan, ( I have 12) I was under the impression that the graft was meant to be just above the soil level? Thanks for your time and effort for us, can’t wait to see what you do with the new land
It would be interesting to see a video on how you film a video like this. Having all the different camera shots. How do you decide where you’re going to set up a camera? When do you start filming? Do you call Aaron ahead so he has everything set up?
Hoping your family stays safe, here in Canada the nurseries have either delayed opening or are doing curbside pick up only! No plant shopping for me 😭😭😭 I wish Espoma products were available in Canada too! Might have to order some from Amazon
Mandy Clark hi I am from Canada too. I would love to have espoma products here as well as boni de. I checked on Amazon last year and there are few options and very e pensive. I wanted to do a border run this spring but that will have to wait now 🥴.
Laura, Wish we could grow Roses, but due to the Rose Rosette disease in which we lost 15 rose bushes, it's a no go in North Texas for now until they find a cure.
Yay for roses! We’re going to have to another wager sometime because I have redeem myself after losing that one!
you did your part. the team needed a couple more touchdowns
This was fun! So fun to have long distance friends.
The Impatient Gardener that was very nice of you to send those roses! They’re beautiful!
Must say, we've all enjoyed it. Keep us in the loop about the next wager. 😂
Ladies, ladies!
Hi I live in zone 9a Fl how do you plant in my area? Any help is greatly appreciated
Thank you for sharing this info. I live in Mississippi Zone 7b so thank you !
What kind of mulch? I have been leaving some leaves on mine over the winter. The rise bush is up by my house and I have a big tree that drops leaves late fall. I have noticed the leaves blow up under the rose bushes and they grow really good in the spring. Is this good enough?

Watching this a year later and I’m so thankful for that. Seeing them act normal is refreshing.
AMEN!!!!!

YES!
Your mom looks fantastic!!! Beautiful ladies both of you!!
I will never not be jealous of how she just steps on the spade and it chunks down so easily. We have so much glacial till in the part of PA I live that I can't dig a hole for an annual or bulb and not hit a bunch of rocks let alone anything bigger.
It’s going to look beautiful located there , very sweet of Erin from The Impatient Gardener.
maybe it's me, maybe I'm weird, but there's something so soothing about the sound of tires on gravel (4:21
)
These are going to be so pretty!!!! I live watching The Impatient Gardner as well. Erin is awesome!!!
Cheers Laura. Having my virtual morning coffee with you. . ☕️
With so many "TV" shows showing dysfunction and drama, I love seeing the interactions between you and your family.
A great idea to keep gophers from eating bulbs or roots is to inset some mesh wire under / around your plants’ root ball. It has saved many of ours!
Everyone needs a friend like Erin @impatient gardener! Looking forward to seeing your first blooms.
I faithfully watch both yours and Erin's RUclips videos and some others too. I love how you guys mention each other, know where one may have more knowledge on a certain topic, etc. Gardeners in general are a friendly and helpful community!
Beautiful rose, it will be so pretty surrounding the crab apple.
So one end of the moon garden will be the "sunrise" side. Those roses will look great! :)
Oh, what a thought--"sunset to moonlight to sunrise GARDEN," New Concept in garden design. Then we could use most colors in this concept at one end or the other!
Love the editing, straight to the point, no music. Just information and imagery for it. Great job! 👏🏻
Love The Impatient Gardener. Love Garden Answer. Enjoying the way you “play nicely with each other. Thanks for sharing this with us.
It is so relaxed there compared to here. We are in full lockdown as are all our nurseries and we have social distancing. Awesome! I’m planting my bare root raspberries today.
Just in time! I just got my bare roots of Ancient Mariner, Jubilee Celebration, and Desdamonia in yesterday. They’re sitting in water and will be planting at my house and at my parent’s.
Thank you for posting so frequently during this season. Your videos have been instrumental in helping me remain positive and upbeat during this time🙏🏾
I love the shabby chic lamp planters. Is there a place online that they can be ordered from.
I love every every video you offer us- never miss! I never see you preparing soil before planting with compost-just bio-tone. Very nice roses love the color...thanks for sharing Laura 🤗👍wish i can visit the gardencenter most are closet here 🤔
You have beautiful roses throughout your gardens. It is nice to see your Mom and hopefully everyone is well and staying safe.

Filming is a lot of work. But they take the time to do such a beautiful job! I love it! But I'm with you, I'd never get the job done! 😊
Advertisement for the business and for the truck? I couldn't do it either.
I was just saying that to myself!!!
But we love their videos, they do it for us.
I'm sure she plans her day accordingly and has several cameras. Love it!
Your mama has such a sweet spirit. She's a doll.
Ahhh coffee with Laura and peaceful planting, loved the bird that was talking about 11:05 I think. Those are amazing roses and it will be so fun to see them bloom. My jaw dropped to see such nice soil. In Houston we have black clay "gumbo" below any top soil. ALWAYS used to amending. Great video, thank you.
Thanks for showing us how you plant your David Austin roses. I planted my first David Austin roses this year and i CAN'T WAIT for them to bloom!
Isn’t there something so,wonderful and exciting about digging a whole in the soil? Knowing that something beautiful ( hopefully) will be coming emerging from it!! AND YES I WANT TO SHOP MOM!!
I just love your Mom. Keep her safe and well.
Thank you !!!!! I just learned that I need to go re-plant the bear roots I planted and bury the crown have a great day this brought our family joy
I enjoy seeing your Mom. I wish she was in all of your videos! She's always so sweet and happy. Is she ever in a bad mood?
Beautiful roses! Love Erin @ Impatient Gardener. What a fun challenge.
Hi Laura! I received my DAVID Austin roses yesterday and you made my wish come true.. I thought to myself *wonder if Laura could show “how to” thank you o much .. Happy Gardening ☀️🌸🌼🌺🌷💐
I wish I can visit my garden center again, your mom's garden center is so pretty:)
What a fun bet! Bravo Oregon!!! Your Mom is so gorgeous!
Hi Laura, beautiful roses🌹🌹I was wondering how your peonies are doing,it would be great to see an update.❤
I plant my bare root Rose's differently. I make a hill of soil in the hole. Then place the rose on the hill, spreading the roots around the hill, then fill in hole. That's the way I learned to do it. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks🌷🌺
After having gophers destroy several of my roses I lined the holes with chicken wire. That really helped.
You are strong because there is no way I would have left without the white moss wall box
On your new land would you consider trying a no dig garden? Or maybe some other garden starting techniques?
Could you do a video with shorter shrubs, like 3’ and under? Or do a specific update on some of shrubs you planted in the videos featured on proven winners site? Thanks!
Wow, Erin did good. Those are probably my favorite DA rose. That color is almost mysterious. It’s not orange or peach, or yellow but wow is it beautiful. Tfs and I’m excited about all the changes for y’all. 👏🏻💕👏🏻
Your family is literally goals.
Roald Dahl was my absolute favorite author for many many years growing up, heck I still enjoy his books now, so now I have to get myself some of these❤ And that color is my favorite!!
I can not wait to see a future tour with these grown up and blooming. Makes me want to plant some in my yard.
Hi Laura and Aaron! Those roses will be beautiful when they bloom, can't wait! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for the info! Now I see why my barefoot roses did not make it thru the winter. So much for the subjective instructions!
Do you plant all bare roots in this manner? (like raspberries, gooseberries, fruit trees?) The part that surprised me was partially burying the crown. Thank you!
I’m so glad your doing this one. I never have success with them.
In the garden center, near the wreaths and frames you could plant, looked like your black metal orbs you have in your urns! 😊
Love the color. They are unique. 🌻💗🌻💗
I wish I had a Garden store like that around me! She was so friendly!
Gorgeous roses! I’m loving the color. Can’t wait to see them in bloom later this year! ♥️💚🌿
(Zone 6-5) WOW!!! And, isn't this video a sample of how we feel at times when we meet ourselves "COMING AND GOING?"
Yeah. My D.A. Rose shud be arriving soon too. 👍 thx for the info...its just in time for me. Awesome!
Wow, trying to imagine having the $$$ to do all that landscaping. U are Blessed 💯
Right?!
I just want to say, watching you shuffle around that wood mulch WITH gloves is so much more comforting than without! 😂
Do you spray your roses regularly to dissuade the mites that cause red rosette disease? If so, what do you recommend to use and how frequently? Thank you!
Beautiful roses! You are brave for planting them near where the gophers came in and took your other roses. I would be too afraid 😟
It might be time to broaden our resources and knowledge base on "critters" and our practices that intersect with wilder ones. Your state's Dept. Of Conservation resources would be a place to start.
I love it my favorite colors.👍🏼
Do you have a video of what to expect after your plant them? I would love to see. Mine has some growth coming out but not sure if it still growing.
Love both you and Erin and how fun to have a wager with the prize being something for the garden. ❤️
Did i hear Laura said she is removing the fence for hay racks? OH ..... I am going to missed those hay racks with flowers
Jimmy Wong well they have way more fence to work with now on the new property. Maybe they’ll move the hay racks to the new fence?
QUESTION I did some winter sowing of Delphiniums. When should I start feeding them and with what? They have their first true Leaves and about an inch tall.
Very sweet gift.
Paint the yellow utility covers a bronze so they blend in better than black.
Love your family garden center!! I will get their someday and shop like crazy!! Can’t wait to see the roses when they bloom!!😀
I follow The impatient gardener , her videos are nice too.
This video is right on time.....
