Great review thanks. I am considering this machine or the Juki TL2300 Sumato which is more expensive. I would love to see a comparison of the two machines.

Great review! I bought the HD9BE over a year ago and have been very happy with it❤ I also use an industrial (Walking foot)but tend to use my HD9BE for 75% of my bag making. The walking foot is also on my wish list but that’s why I use my

Great review Emma. I love my hd9. I used to have an industrial and this machine compares favorably. I bought a walking foot - its called Even Feed Foot for DB Hook Models (Janome) also bought free motion quilting foot. I use the knee lift - love it.

Very good review (have one of these).
Can see the lighting flickers badly in your video, but that is down to your camera and a mis-match between the frequency of the LED's and the frequency of the camera image and/or display. You won't see it in real life when using the machine.
You are right that the price of the bobbins (and the bobbin case as well) from Janome is CRAZY. There are alternatives that work perfectly if you do a bit of research, and they're much much cheaper ! (Talking about the later Mk2 machines like yours with the larger bobbin).
There is a replacement case and bobbin in mine at the moment and it's zooming flat out through some long seams with absolutely no problem or noise.
One advantage you may not have thought about is that because this machine is high shank using industrial components, you can fit more or less any standard industrial foot and lots of other special tools. There is a huge selection and they are cheap.
Haven't bothered about getting a walking foot - find using the narrow foot and dropping the foot pressure works fine to stop layers shifting, so far anyway.
Still can't get on with the needle threader - works "most"of the time for me - but that's down to the user I think not the machine 🙄

I have a version 1 and it is fine, the only problem I had was sometimes it was difficult to thread the bobbin, I asked my dealer and they replaced the whole bobbin case and everything is absolutely great now.

I’ve had my HD9 for just over a year and it really made a difference to my bag making and what materials I could sew. I don’t have room for an industrial so it’s a great alternative for me.
Agree about the price of the bobbins though 🤦♀️ they’re the only part I’ve found to be more expensive than my domestic.
I’ve been a bit daunted to try the knee lift though - must give it a try 😅
Thanks Karen, yes it’s a game changer eh?! I’m not convinced it costs much to make those bobbins so it does feel a bit of a sting on those 😵💫.

I had a Huge toss up between HD9 or the 6700HD..
I ended up getting the 6700HD/P as it had a few more “bells and whistles” with the same construction as HD9 with the dedicated HP plate for bag making as well as the benefit of 2 other plates for decorative sewing as well as built in walking foot assembly. I loved working with both machines during my “try and see” period, but 6700HD/P won out!

Interested in how you got to try out two machines? Are you UK based? I’m finding it difficult to find one to try out in a shop. Certainly not any near me in south UK

I want to thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial. I am kind of new to sewing and recently got a job at a sewing machine/ fabric store selling both. Your tutorial will be so helpful for me to demonstrate this great machine! i have to say after watching this video it made me want to go back to the shop and buy one for my self as I am a bag maker as well!!! just the speed and securing bag straps is a game changer for me!! The big screw and the last thing is a seam guide it screws to the circle next to the needle plate
I use the big screw though for my foot as it makes changing the feet really easy x
Also when filming put some black tape over the light it stops the flicker.

The little attachment with the screw, is a seam guide . You use the screw and the hole in your machine bed.
I got there in the end - discovered this later on in the video ☺️
Hi, thank you for the great video. Have had my HD 9 V2 for a couple of years, but did not know that this machine has a port (this port is not well identified) for a foot operated thread cutter, until a couple of weeks ago. Not sure why there is no mention of this function anywhere, have just ordered the pedal will see how it works.

If the machine did zigzag? Yes It would, but it wouldn't be fast... I use my Bernini 480 for that which I recommend

Great video, I am new to bag making and sewing and currently looking at the range of brands of straight stitch machines. Did you try any other makes? Thanks
Hi I have sewn for most of my life (in costume workrooms) almost daily so I've used a lot of machines. There's definitely a lot to choose from. I also love Juki machines so do look at those. Juki are harder to get in the uk and I watched a few videos on them and decided that the HD9 was more for me. Not sure if that helps - there's a lot of personal considerations too. If you have the space, an industrial could be more for you?
When I was looking for a heavy duty machine, I knew I didn’t have room for an industrial. I ended up with a Sailrite LSZ (it can do a zigzag). If you think your HD9 is heavy, you should try lifting mine - it weighs 70+ pounds! That’s more than twice what yours weighs. It has a case, but since I can’t lift it, that’s a moot point. I wish I had waited and got something like the Janome. This is just too much machine for me.
Oh gosh that sounds like you’d need a really strong table too! I have heard good things about the sailrite machines though 🥰
I have an HD9 V1, and mine is definitely not all metal. The foot clearance is terrible. Some days it sews like a dream and the next day it’s skipping stitches like crazy. It’s a great heavy duty machine, but some of the materials I’ve started using, it just can’t handle. The needles aren’t long enough to penetrate the thickness to complete the stitch, IF I can get the material under the presser foot.
oh no im sorry to hear that :( have you spoken to janome about it? Maybe the V1 and 2 are quite different - as you can see on the video I can get through a lot of layers with mine :(
Hi, Sorry if this sounds silly or has been touched upon before. I'm really new to bag making & currently only have a domestic. I really love the Janome HD9 & looking at seriously getting it. My question is when the bag needs to be topstitched around the very top once everything is completed. The little domestic I'm using now has the option to remove the front creating a free arm. I'm wondering how this is done on the Janome HD9 or if there is a different sewing technique to do this if there is no free arm option?
I have researched quite a bit, but I understand it not to have a free arm option.
So sorry if this sounds dumb, or if I've missed something but I have very limited access to ask people about my question.

I heard once that you should wind your bobbin on the slowest speed for the best wind. Is that true?
Oh that’s interesting! I’ve not heard that one! I’ll try and look into that 🤔
@@Studio7t7 You can't change the speed on these machines - it's fixed. Oddly, on another Janome I have - where it depends on how much you press the pedal - Janomes tells you to wind it at the maximum speed. 🤨
Hi just purchased this machine a real newbie! Just found your channel and binge watching your videos. What thread do you use for bag making and can you use normal sewing threads and again what would you suggest? Based in the uk. Thanks in advance
Hi and welcome to bag making! You can use gutterman sew all polyester thread for most things. Def don’t use cotton thread. Tex 35 or 45 is great for topstitching. I do sell the tex 35… are you coming to stitch festival in a few weeks? You might want to if not too far. It’s in london design centre. I’ve got a stand there. I don't understand why the price is more than a true industrial that's what the con is for me.
Good question. I’m not sure but my guess is that it’s packed into a smaller space. The smaller motor etc but with the same power?
Good point ! I guess the market for this type of machine is limited, and the competitor machines on the market are in the same general ballpark. Industrial is a completely different market, and bearing in mind where most are sold is going to be very price competitive. Generally pricing of stuff isn't related directly to the cost of making it, but down to what the manufacturers think they can get for it.
