how often do I need to trim this plant? Looking for a shrub, pine , tree of anything to give me some privacy along my 173 ft fence. I live in the city in a corner lot. My yard sits high so everybody can see inside my yard.. I want to keep it around 6 maybe 7 feel high and 4 to 5 feet wide.

I like keeping mine narrow and just break off the branches when needed.

This vs laurel, wax leaf privet, emerald green thuja? I am looking to go kinda narrow, since it is for a 1/2 backyard. Thanks 👍

none, go with podocarpus henkelii if you want a thick and tall screening hedge, dodonaea viscosa purpurea sways too much in wind and storms

I used wax leaf privet until they all died via fungus rot. I like this since it is drought tolerant once established. I have one trimmed into a 20 foot tree. In this case, I broke the bottom branches off so the top area became bushy. Great tree. I am also using as a privacy screen and trimming to a thickness of about 1 1/2 feet. It still fills out and provides privacy. No more privets for me!

@@sweetnsourlvr very dry here, so rot is least worry doing great, but wanted to change to have 3 varieties in case of pests, or desiase. I have Oleander too but more on side, because it is poisonous, and if any kids visit, to avoid safety risks.

Hello from Santa Barbara Area. I am thinking about getting this tree to replace my bottle brush tree that died, Few questions about the tree. I notice that it flowers, :
1.Does it get messy when the flowers dry with its dead bloom
    2. do leaves fall off in large quantities. My bottle brush tree was 100 % free of any maintenance LOL.
3.Also key point, I have large room for it to grow but next to it will be 12 foot tangerine tree. Are they compatible ie tangerine and the bush. When I had the bottle brush tree next to tangerine, tangerine would not grow towards the bottle brush tree, it had an invisible straight line on one side of tangerine tree relative to the bottle bruh tree.
    4. Tree tag tells me it will grow up to 12 feet but you said 18 feet. How fast they grow, ie how often you prune them . 18 feet for me is a bit too much to prune at my age hihihi

they take a long time to grow, I am in bay area as well, I bought 10 of them last year amd they were already 4 ft tall and about 1-2 years old and they're growing at an alright pace for a fence hedge, out of 10, 3 are lagging behind a lot, maybe got to do with soil as well, wax leaf japanese privet's grow faster, also if you're looking for a fence hedge get podocarpus gracilior, they grow much faster and are taller and denser foliage wise

I need help! We planted over 40 of these along the road for privacy. They were growing and doing well for 2 years and then all of a sudden they started to die. We live in North San Diego County, California & these were planted to replace the Oleanders that started to become infected and dying. We did all the research prior to planting and they are a great fit for our drought tolerant area. We watered regularly until established and then cut back to weekly.
Everybody we talk to tells us something different on the watering so we are not sure what to believe! Again they were just fine for 2 years! It is not gophers, can't find any insect infestation or anything else that might be the problem. We find nothing online to help us. We have neighbors up the road who are having the same problem. They are just dying off one by one. We've already replaced about 12 of them and now 3 more need to be replaced. We can't keep doing this as it gets expensive plus they look so uneven ugly until reaching their same height as the matures ones. Have to hand water until they mature so they can be on the timed sprinkler system. (no its not the sprinklers, husband has our yard dialed in) We love these plants.....Is there anybody out there who can help us?

I have a couple of these in San Francisco and have never watered them. They get fog and winter rain, however.

Hi, did you ever find a reason? I am having similar issues.

We have the same problem on both plants. We switched to Grevillea, especially Grevillea Long John and could not be happier!

Are puppies destroyed our sprinkler system, and we had frost ,because we're close to the mountains! Anyways I wish you luck!👱‍♀️🌺👍🌲
