we planted 28 of these along our back wall (65') for privacy; planted 4 years ago from 5 gallon pots, spaced 18" from each other. They are about 14' tall, w/4' only having leaves. Fanatic tree.
Also a butterfly host plant. Coral hairstreak, spring azure, summer azure, red spotted purple, viceroy, eastern tiger swallowtail, and probably others. For those that butterfly garden.
Hey Jeff can you tell me if syzygium smithii 'Lilly Pilly ' also called Acmena Smithii will do well in Sacramento? I bought seeds from it and I'm planning on growing it myself because no one sells it here. It's very popular in Australia. Thanks
I am in So Cal and planted in my house on the sides to create a screen in the summer of 2020. Very clean for the pool and evergreen, not invasive roots, so great when planted along property line. Only issue is that it is prone to be infected by bugs and bacteria when recently planted. A lot of care for that only reason.
Hi, what is the growth rate in zone 8? I also live in northern california. City of Palo Alto. How long will it get to reach 40 feet. Can this cover a 3.5 stories condo next to my house?
Forty feet would be really tall. In north Florida they are commonly 15 to 25 feet tall. They usually hold their berries really tight until the birds have eaten most of them.
@@typ8723 l'm in The Florida Native Plant Society. l could be wrong, but l don't think a native can also be an invasive. Not sure what the proper name for something that dominates is.

How did you fight that issue?
we need to create a screen and we are thinking of using the carolina laurel cherry. How tall does it get and does it grow fast?
Has anybody attempted to grow this in New Jersey?

Jeff, are these very toxic? I read very negative things about it. Will they kill plants around it?

aren't they toxic?
They are VERY invasive in Florida and the seeds sprout up EVERYWHERE !!!!!!!!!!!!
It is native to Florida though.
They're are popping up all over my yard here in California. Btw, I like you profile pic molliemollie.
@@gcxred4kat9 they are invasive garbage. I cut them down drill holes and pour glyphosate down their throat and it's like fertilizer for them

A weed is any plant in an unwanted place.
All part are highly toxic to humans and other mammals, but the pollinators love them.
