finally changed the oil on my 98 Honda Accord by myself for the 1st time, thanks for the video.
+Matthew Morgan nice! Good work :)
I need help still lmfao
What kind of oil did you get
My son has one and he needs to know how to do!👍
@@mayranmerced1 Show him this video and tell him that he needs to do it by himself
Thank you ! As a woman this is super important for me .I’m going to change my own oil
🙌🏽
Thanks man I'm 17 I've never done anything to my car always call a mechanics and is not cheap but thanks to you I change the oil of my car no problem 👍👍👍👍
Carlinho Martienes nice! Glad to hear you did your own oil change.
Thanks for the video man! My great-grandmother is retiring from driving this April and she's going to give me her 98 Honda Accord that month! At least I'll know what to do now for the oil change! You're awesome! And I will sub you!
Thanks gor your share!
Very easy task. Now I'll have more money to save!
Especially on a 98 accord coupe like mine with 231,000 miles!
Carlos Flores np! :D
Great video! Watched it and then went out and gave it a shot and success! Thank you
One thing you forgot to mention is to make sure the old oil filter gasket isn't still attached onto where the oil filter goes. Make sure when you remove the oil filter to check it and see if the gasket came off with the filter. Once in awhile, the filter gasket will stay on.
This video reminded me where to find the dang oil filter. What a tough spot. Thank you.
omnihilum haha, yeah, most Honda Accord's are placed in that position, unless its a V6 engine.
I have to watch this video to find that fricking oil filter !!!!
I had 3 accords where the filter was like yours on the back of the block. Tip. Use a large nail, awl or screwdriver and punch a hole on the bottom at the end of the OLD FILTER to drain out most of the oil. No more messy filter removals.
+hanky97007 that seemed more messy lol... but whatever works...
Super helpful. Easy to follow and to-the-point.
:) thx
Learned how to change oil years ago in Auto. FIRST time doing it on my own. Very important for girls to know how to do this for themselves! Thx for the refresher!
i have always used 5w30 and 10w30 in the warm weather months - synthetic - name brand varied according to what is on sale - approx every 6-7k change, live in northern NJ. Also i use redline d4 atf in all my honda cars with much success. ATF change of approx 3qts/9-10k miles. Also with success. Accord 2002 4cyl, f23a4 engine
All new honda design 2013-2017 easy oil change! Filter and drain plug is outside near by the Radiator.
Thank you 😊 you helped me out a lot. Thank you again.
glad we could help :)
Quick question do you think that if I took the straight pipe off a 97 honda civic do you think it would fit a 2000 honda accord?
#1 check what oil your car takes im not sure if you have the l4 or the v6 model accord but the l4 takes 5w30 not 5w20.
#2 its right tight left lose they are not counter threaded
#3 the point in hitting your trip button next to the speedo is to reset the maintenance light it will light up every 5k miles to signal you are due for an oil change. to reset this light turn your key to the 2 position and hold down the trip reset button. then while holding it down turn the car off. keep it held for 10 seconds then turn the car back to ignition 2 while still holding the button. wait a second and it should go away then you are on with your day
+Michael Brown Inline 4 cylinder takes 5W-20, it even say it on the oil cap, the V6 takes 5W-30.
+NutzAboutBolts
www.manualowl.com/am/Honda/1998-Accord/Manual/6950
heres a link to a 1998 honda accord manual on page 208 it says 5w30
if you live in an area with very low temperatures below 20 degrees F you may use 10w30
Michael Brown
ours 2001, 1998-2000 takes 5W-30, the 2001-2002 takes 5W-20.
Good job good video. Thank you
Thank you for this video. I appreciate you giving ratchet size so I don’t have to figure it out. 10/10 thank you very much. Should car be flat when changing oil or is it okay if front is lifted?
It’s ok for front to be lifted, I use ramps when changing oil 👍🏼
Visible, good quality video, quite exploratory. Great work sir.
nice video easy job thanks
Thank you! I'm going to change the oil by myself ^^ By the way, may I know how could you clean the chassis and the engine bay?
Cleaning the chassis, probably need a pressure washer that can spray underneath, there should be a stall shop that lets you pay for a few minutes with the pressure washer to clean the bottom or so, check around. For cleaning the engine bay, we did a video of that using purple power, search in our video for the Prius engine bay clean. Same concept.
Shouldn't you take the cap off after you take the plug out, so your hands don't get covered in oil?
Which type of oil should i use for a 98 honda accord with 195,000 miles on it? And what is the point of reseting the thing on the speedometer ?
I reccomend 5w20 you can always go to your local parts store and they can help out. Also the point resetting that is so the computer can notify you for the next oil change
Can I use 11/16 socket or is it too big?
Well made video! Simple instructions. Many thanks.
+Alejandro Amezola thanks!
Good video.
Just my two cents, but I throw rags around the exhaust and other areas that the filter might leak on.
Great video, thanks! Ive never done an oil change myself, you made it look easy...i have a 98 civic...last week i checked the oil, and there was none! No light, no warning, no smoking, no nothing...it was so odd! A couple weeks before that, my red light came on...first time in 8 yrs...so i checked the oil, and it was gone😱 so i ended up having to put almost 4 qts! No puddles at work or home, so am i correct in thinking that its burning off? Haven't had a chance to see whats up, its been parked ever since, but yesterday, i checked the radiator yo see if there was oil in there, and it didn't look like there was any water either. I didn't start it up to add some and see how empty it was because it has no oil. I have never in 8 years had any probs with my car, but now it seems to be on its last legs?... 😢 makes me sad.
what oil are you using? ours was 5w.20, maybe you can use 5w-30 and check every 1k miles to see if oil is burning off or not. These old cars tend to burn oil and its normal, just have to go higher in oil viscosity.
NutzAboutBolts thanks for your speedy reply...will be checking it out later or tomorrow...i cant remember what kind oil i used...i do remember one store had one quart of synthetic...i put that in and it didn't register on the dipstick, so i bought 3 more quarts from another place that was not synthetic...i think they were All 10/30, but not sure now. Would mixing synthetic with regular oil be bad? :/
It would make the synthetic oil useless and synthetic is more expensive lol. Stick to one same type of oil and see if it's still burning oil. Maybe go with high mileage oil since it's an old car.
NutzAboutBolts ok...ill try that...i sure hope my car lives on lol. Btw...i live on an island, takes a very lonnng time to drive 1 k. Haha. Mahalo for your help. Much Aloha ❤️🙏🌺
:)
Thanks for the help
+Johnny Westbrook no problem :) glad it helped.
is it the same reset method for a 98 accord as well? i had my oil changed not that long ago but it wasnt reset. although i am having other issues with my car, could my maintanance light be flashing for few seconds when i start it up be due to it not being reset?
you will see the maintenance light stay lite if its not reset, try the reset method and make sure its the maintenance light and not the check engine light. It should be the same for 98
thanks for video
Thx for the vid
Hi. I have a VTEC honda Accord with the same set-up. The gears do not change in drive mode...any idea how to fix this?
Mwandu Sichone new transmission
Gracias amigo! I didn't knew how to reset the maintenance light
Rigo F. np!
Junior Gamin - It shouldn't matter, just make sure not to burn yourself from the exhaust pipe.
Do you need all that part just to change the oil? What if u just want to change the oil?
you want to change out the oil filter as well or else that filter will be build up with dirt and particles and it won't be filtering out the oil properly and will cause a low pressure sooner or later.
In the video you never showed which way you turned the oil plug. It is reverse threaded and counter clockwise right? I can't seem to get mine off. Tried both clockwise and counterclockwise with no avail. Also tried lightly tapping the end of the wrench with a hammer but again nothing. Tried spraying some WD-40 and it will not budge.
+ark50000 it's always been left is to loosen it... Right is tightening it up. You must have tighten it too tight to take it off or the bolt could be stripped.
I had a company do it for me last time and I am regretting it. I was turning the correct way the entire time. Probably have to put it on a lift so I can get more leverage. Thanks
+ark50000 yeah, get a breaker bar and turn it left, that should do the trick.
Does the 1999 honda accord have a transmission filter, if it does where is it at??
Mr Diaz inside the transmission
Just my advice but its best to put some oil in the new filter so its no bone dry when you start up the car...
Easy on some cars, most will just spill out on a Honda Accord as the filter is horizontal with the ground.
Thank you
the drain bolt gasket seemed to be stuck on the drain pan when u took at the bolt
yeah, sometimes it get stuck on the drain pan, thats why we use a small flat head screw driver to pry it off.
Great vlog!
When you do a video about working on a car at the start when you mention the model and year you should say which engine that has. Then the viewer knows at the beginning if they found the right video.
I dont have a dad so this helps
Hello! How many miles has this engine, approximately? I find it curious that you use 5W20 oil in a vehicle having several years.
On the other hand, they have a video where you explain how to drain and change the brake fluid for the 1998-2002 Accord? I appreciate your attention, best regards!
I put it in the description that the 98-00, the engine oil takes 5W-30, the newer model which is 01-02, they use 5W-20... Its listed in your manual book on what types of oil you should be using. As for the reason why we still use 5W-20, it hasn't leak any oil on us and its called for 5W-20. I haven't found any other reason to switch to 5W-30, unless it starts burning oil... but then I would be concern of the piston rings being bad...
+NutzAboutBolts thank you very much for the answer about the engine and its oil, and forgot comment about video on how to drain and change the brake fluid in a Honda Accord for 1998 - 2002. Thanks again and greetings!
it would be the same as the 2006 Accord, same brake bleed and coolant drain procedures.
+NutzAboutBolts alright! thank you very much for the answer. best regards!
Carlos Figueroa
np :)
I had my oil changed and my car is releasing smoke in the exhaust under the oil filter. Is that normal ?
Maybe a little oil spilled on it and now it's burning because of heat. Once it's burned off, it will go away.
@@obloodyhell1 thanks you were right its all gone now
How long should your car be turned off before you do this?
Junior Gamin engine has to be cool
in a perfect world, you should be able to remove that filter by hand depending on where it is
kiero saber como canbiar el catalisador de un honda acord 99
What side do you put the jacks on
+Scott York both sides
does it HAVE to be a NEW gasket on the oil plug ????
I change the gasket every 3 uses for aluminum and copper gaskets.
+NutzAboutBolts thanks for the reply . asking because i really need a oil change im gonna go ahead and do it towards this video i have everything i meed except the gasket
@@jerrinbrown 2 year old reply, but replacing the gasket is good to do since it's crushed to size and gets old and dries out.
What is the part on the exhaust to the right of the screen at 1:05 (the honeycomb thing?)
To the very right of your hand at 2:20
It's called a flex pipe
NutzAboutBolts is it bad if the fabric part on mine is a little ripped and how vital is a o2 sensor?
Mr Paps no, mine is ripped off too and it’s alright
The gasket is very important to you but you glossed over tightening the drain plug. Should be tightened to 33 ft/lbs so it wasn't overtightened probably, but you didn't tighten it enough
Whats the gasket for?
@@franciscomorales883 the gasket is to prevent leaks but if only seen it on Hondas. I’m sure other companies do it but my Ford does not require a gasket on the grain plug but I guess you could put one on if you wanted to. They both probably have tapered threads to get a seal. I’ve reused the Honda gaskets too. Plugging the drain hole is not rocket science.
U should have put new oil in the new filter be for putting on it better for the motor there suppose to be oil in it and u just left air now the car has to fill it its self so befor you drive since I didnt put oil in new filter befor pit it on let the car run and idle for 15 20 mins before driving
I wouldn't use any fram filter on any car with VTEC or VVTi..or overhead cam or cams for that matter
eightysixpony why?
Laurent they are very restrictive and can cause oil pressure issues which will cause problems with VTEC and VVTi valves. or on cold start ups it takes extra time for the oil to reach the cams
eightysixpony so what would you recommend? thx for replying so quickly
Laurent just stay away from fram an the cheap stuff.
Laurent I would go with a Wix by preference but honestly you're fine with a Bosch, Purolator, mobil1. just stay away from fram and STP which is also made by fram
insane why ppl tighten filters so tight
Didn't know that about the reset trick. Thanks
thurm101 np!
Isn't it illegal to reset the mileage thing
It is, what we’re resetting is the trip meter and not the odometer.
Okay thx
Tried the reset button but didn't work.
+Lus Ceebtoom could be broken? that's the only way to reset it...
Is it ok to use 5w-30 instead of 20??
despite what ppl tell u do not use 5w 30 in honda engine
@@dirtydangler why not i just put w 30 in my engine
Does any one nknow what the name of a arm near the oil filter
Efrain Rivera can you show us a picture of it? you can post it on our facebook page if you need to.
Efrain Rivera CV axle
why 5w 30? is that best?
if your vehicle is from 1998-2000, your engine oil is 5W-30. If your vehicle is from 2001-2002, your engine oil is 5W-20. Follow your vehicle manufacturer recommendations.
+NutzAboutBolts why? 1998 and 2002 has the same engine isn't?
+Jose Rodriguez actually they don't. j30, f23a1, and f23a4
+Jose Rodriguez i have a 99 accord 4cylinder vtec. im happy with it. Every now and then it runs hot on a very hot day. My cooling fans only come on when i turn the cabin ac blower to any speed. Any ideas? I changed ect
sensor and nothing.
TO THE GUY THAT MADE THIS VIDEO ANY STATE LICENSE MECHANIC WILL TELL YOU THAT FRAM IS SPECIFICALLY MADE FOR THE FORDS ONLY
To the person that made this comment in ALL CAPS, what a fuckin' waste of human flesh you are. Piece of garbage. Is typing in ALL CAPS the only way you know?? I read your response concerning the oil filter gasket, and as I said before, such a waste of human flesh you are. I GUESS THE ONLY WAY YOU"LL UNDERSTAND IS BY TYPING IN CAPS......GROW THE HELL UP!!! YOUR SHIT DOES STINK!!!!
then why did you choose the tough guard I'm not tryna make u think I'm being a butt lol I'm just asking I have 99 accord
Wasn’t my car, customer wanted it lol if it was my choice, I choose oem or Mobil 1
I did however use valvoline hm and well she's leaking like grammpys colon its horrible bro
I don't get it, where in the engine is the oil filter?
its on the bottom, in the rear by the exhaust side, up top.
first you have to find the drain plug!!!! oil filter is right above it!GOT IT!!
Why are you using 5W-20 and not 5W-30?
My 02 Honda accord 4cyl uses 5W-20
easy peasy
what if i used 5 w 30?
+Anthony Rendon V6 uses 5w-30. Just follow what your oil cap say, or check your owners manual.
5w -20 🤔I thought it was 5w30
The 1999-2000 are 5w-30. 2001-2002 is 5w-20
You said you Forgot to mention getting DRAIN PAN, you forgot to mention getting a gasket for the oil plug....man you forgot a lot in the video.
Gene Jenkins I’m old, we forget things lol
I was teasing you NutzaboutBolts. Seriously, thank you, I know by your video I can change the oil for sure in my 99 Honda EX 2.3. Thanks.
this car does NOT take 5W-20 it takes 5W-30
1998-2000 takes 5w-30, 2001-2002 is 5w-20
Dude you skipped showing which way you turn your ratchet to take off the bolt and I stripped my oil pan bolt now I need a whole new oil pan never skip anything you think is significant cuz it might help someone else
Lol how do you remove the oil filter?
@@NutzAboutBolts @NutzAboutBolts first of all I don't know what you find funny about the situation I have to get a whole new oil pan in other videos I end up watching after yours they showed absolutely everything and yours when you're about to turn the ratchet you cut to you already draining the oil also it's kind of a stupid question asking how I remove the filter because there's no point of removing the filter if I can't remove the bolt to drain the oil
@@SCOUT8705 I don’t know how you got to thinking of removing the oil drain plug is turning to the right. If you can’t even figure that out, I suggest you don’t work on cars. If you are confused on how to remove the drain plug, keep watching more RUclips videos, that’s how you’re on mine right? Quit blaming me for your incompetence.
Fram is at Walmart and it’s cheap junk. Don’t put it in anything your gonna keep for awhile, get oem or top quality name brand
Khi
Missed bleeding the breaks. Some people will over look this,or,might even know how. Good info though just dont recommend sriving until the breaks are properly bleed out.
I have a 4 cylinder.
+Anthony Rendon what does it say on the oil cap?
2:04 “hand tighten don’t go overboard” as he proceeds to use a ratchet
King Jizzam he doesnt mean to actually tight it with your hand , it means tight it with normal pressure as if you would of been using your hand but with the ratchet
I understand y’all just haven’t been taught but I’m sorry I’m 18 and I’ve known how to change oil since I was 6 I’m thankful my parents taught me important life skills no judgement to y’all who never got taught I just think it’s sad the way the countries going
I had no father
You made so many mistakes......
You didn't check the oil dipstick as you were adding the oil a bit at a time, you just went and added 4.5 quarts in one go. How do you know you had all the old oil drained out first? You didn't.
In which case you may well have overfilled your engine with too much oil (which I'm betting you did).
Shut up
finally changed the oil on my 98 Honda Accord by myself for the 1st time, thanks for the video.
