As a Palestinian, I definitely respect Miko Peled and Illan Pappe, they were both born in Palestine and figured out what's going on there and the injustice that we are facing. In this mall we encountered many Arab Israelis shopping, having a meal in the restaurants and cafe's, some of the mall workers are also local Arabs, and even some of my daughters teachers are Arabs. So it is not strange for Jews and Arabs to interact and even create friendships. But on the flip side I can say that many Palestinians in the west bank and Gaza have never met a Jew, and in many Palestinian towns an Israeli would not be safe if he ever entered.

If you read the report on electronic intifada you realize that its done with a high, very high level of journalistics skills, the author of that piece was congratulated by a lot of respected journalists but MORE importantly its based entirely in Israeli sources, I read it carefuly and I followed all its footnotes and it was based from everything from Haaretz to Ynet, Times of Israel, Jerusalem Post, Yedioth Arahot and open sources like Hebrew podcasts interviewing military personel, radio interviews and social media posts from witnesses. Jake, there are so many books with which to educate yourself. Ilan Pappe’s The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine (he is an Israeli, exiled for telling the unwelcome truth), Rashid Khalidi’s The 100 Year War on Palestine, for example. They make hard reading, but use the official archives and personal records. Please have a look at them to gain some perspective. The last year has been a real education for me and these sources have been key. And Electronic Intifada is well worth listening to, as well, with two or three Jewish journalists on it, as well as one Palestinian. Just try it, or read their articles written by Gazans even now.

The latter presupposes that Hamas actually did the killing, not the IDF ... It is the typical Turkish point 'we did not genocide Armenians, Greeks etc. but they deserved it'. Also, the entire argument about terrorism being provoked by material conditions falls apart when you consider the pogroms and subjugation Jews faced in the region in the 1800s, before any ideas about statehood.
That's not what he said though. You're combining two points as if they are one. First, there is a moral question to be asked about people choosing to live right by a concentration camp and there is a moral question to be asked about people hosting a music festival right by a concentration camp. There is also a moral (and tbh practical) question to be asked about the proximity of the festival and Kibbutzim to military locations, which are valid targets to engage with, and what sort of inherent danger that puts Israeli civilians in. None of that contradicts the second (and separate) point he made, which was just a statement of the fact that many of the people killed on Oct. 7 were killed by Israeli fire. Yesterday I took my daughters to a mall in a major Israeli city.
In this mall we encountered many Arab Israelis shopping, having a meal in the restaurants and cafe's, some of the mall workers are also local Arabs, and even some of my daughters teachers are Arabs. So it is not strange for Jews and Arabs to interact and even create friendships.
But on the flip side I can say that many Palestinians in the west bank and Gaza have never met a Jew, and in many Palestinian towns an Israeli would not be safe if he ever entered.

Firstly, the whole Judaism is an ethnicity debate is getting old. Ashkenazi is a term used for Jews originating from France, Eastern & Central Europe. It's not an ethnicity, more like a convoluted caste system.
Second, Jakes focus on "agency" and the "immorality of murdering civilians" is so ludicrous given that Israel has been doing that to Palestinians since its inception - and much worse! He's asking the audience to overlook the fact that the occupation and apartheid and oppression and torture and surveillance and subjugation hasn't been directly contributing to & the root cause of the retaliatory violence from the Palestinians. The Palestinians literally welcomed the Jews onto their land after they were expelled from Europe! This kind and generous nation were taken advantage of and then systematically destroyed & decimated.
Miko is right, no one is in a position or has the right to judge those who've been suffering under brutal occupation for almost a century, especially since they've tried everything at their disposal to bring about their freedom, exhausted every peaceful means available (great march of return for eg).

The reason it's inappropriate for privileged people such as yourself (and me, for that matter) to entertain "whether or to what extent we can judge Hamas for Oct. 7", right *in the middle* of a genocide against the people that Hamas and others are fighting for, is that it only can empower the people committing the genocide. It gives fuel to the dumpster-fire that is Western colonial and imperialist media, so that is can use soundbites and continue to condition citizens in the amerika/UK/"israel" to view this as a "both-sides-are-wrong" issue, when there is a fundamental asymmetry of power, a colonizer-colonized dynamic. Miko is right to not want to add to that insidious framing of this genocide.

Jake, there are so many books with which to educate yourself. Ilan Pappe’s The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine (he is an Israeli, exiled for telling the unwelcome truth), Rashid Khalidi’s The 100 Year War on Palestine, for example. They make hard reading, but use the official archives and personal records. Please have a look at them to gain some perspective. The last year has been a real education for me and these sources have been key. And Electronic Intifada is well worth listening to, as well, with two or three Jewish journalists on it, as well as one Palestinian. Just try it, or read their articles written by Gazans even now.

11:30 he says the majority of Israelis were killed by the IDF but at the same time says 'oh Israelis lived too close to a 'concentration camp' so they had it coming'. The latter presupposes that Hamas actually did the killing, not the IDF ... It is the typical Turkish point 'we did not genocide Armenians, Greeks etc. but they deserved it'. Also, the entire argument about terrorism being provoked by material conditions falls apart when you consider the pogroms and subjugation Jews faced in the region in the 1800s, before any ideas about statehood.

That's not what he said though. You're combining two points as if they are one. First, there is a moral question to be asked about people choosing to live right by a concentration camp and there is a moral question to be asked about people hosting a music festival right by a concentration camp. There is also a moral (and tbh practical) question to be asked about the proximity of the festival and Kibbutzim to military locations, which are valid targets to engage with, and what sort of inherent danger that puts Israeli civilians in. None of that contradicts the second (and separate) point he made, which was just a statement of the fact that many of the people killed on Oct. 7 were killed by Israeli fire. These factors intersect but they are not being brought up as direct correlation and it's dishonest to act like that was his point.
