Surprised to see this knot on a bass channel. Excellent knot- Joe Miller created this knot for Southern California Long Range Tuna fishing. Tuna ranging 100lbs to 300 lbs plus. Works with braid, mono and fluorocarbon. Joe designed to be very small knot with 80 to 200lbs test . Works well with all lbs test lines
I like it. Pretty simple too. I feel like some knots were just created when people were bored and not catching fish and that's why they're complicated.
I know an old time surfboard shaper / fisherman out here on the west coast who has sworn by this knot for decades ! I've never tried it but for sure will now. Thanks for sharing.
I Love this knot I been using it for more then 15 years and didn't know the name I very seldom break this knot I also use it on braid but I rap it 5 times and it won't pull out great video

It works just as well for braid. I fish in Florida and it holds up to stripping baits out of pads and bullrush when hung. My only knot for last two years
It’s crazy that I’ve been fishing for over 40 years and to this day I have only tied one knot… the advanced clinch knot! From trout fishing, surf fishing and mostly bass fishing, I can not remember a time where my line broke at the knot. My buddies all use the polomar knot… the good ole advanced clinch has never failed me!
I use 5 diffrent knots now for fun but living on the coast in NJ my whole life i learned the clinch knot (aka the fishermen knot) 25 yrs ago and its never let me down either.
I would agree with this 99% of the time. The clinch knot has never let me down, I've been tying it for about 35 years. The one percent of the time it has let me down is if I'm rushing with fluorocarbon and don't wet it and kind of burn it while cinching it down. That being said it's also important to always have your drag set correctly.
I never improve it, I prefer a plain clinch, whenever I tie it improved it breaks, I feel like it cuts into itself that way and a plain clinch is just better. But just my opinion. If you like a clinch try it on a doubled line, its called a 'rivers inlet knot' and has been used by guys chasing big steelhead on very light tackle for a long time, and its what I use most of the time when I want a very strong knot.
First time I’ve seen this knot mentioned. I’ve been using it for 40 years starting with very light mono(4lb) while trout fishing small high mountain streams in crystal clear water. Now I use it for most of my light to avg flouro and mono applications. Great video!
I tie a very similar knot but I haven’t tried the extra twist to creat the figure 8 with the second loop before sliding the tag end through. It’s an incredibly strong knot that once cinched down is easily the strongest knot that I’ve used. It’s stupid strong. Beats the palomar handily along with sdj uni or any of those doubled
@@MattStefanFishing what makes it so great is how tightly it cinches down. I’ve never used a knot that cinches so strongly that it doesn’t even have any remote amount of play like a sdj or uni would.
Matt, I have used this knot for two years with all lines including braids. Joe Miller the knot creator ties it slightly different going thru the front side after the two wraps going around the backside. I tuck the tag back thru the eye to keep it from snagging.
I've been practicing tying this knot this morning and I have to say Matt that this knot is far better and easier to tie than the double uni knot. It does not budge either.
Interesting. I will give it a shot. I use the knot where you end up with 3 tag ends for Fluoro. Haven't had a failure, but I'm always looking for something new. Except the FG. I've given up on trying to tie that 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I use the 3 tag end knot as well and never had knot failure. I’m somewhat unhappy with the bulk of tag ends when using larger line sizes though, only complaint. Will try this one out 💪🏻

Instead of the figure 8 made by the twist and the final pass through I don't twist it and make exactly 2 passes thru the open side loop and sinch it down. I've tied this knot to a worm hook and wrapped it around my hand with a sock on it and with only 3 inches of line from my hand to the hook the line will shap everytime before the knot breaks.

I used to use the advanced clinch knot but- I had it let go on me a couple times catching big catfish and was complaining about it one day at the lake and this old guy showed me how to tie a Sandiego Jam knot- said they used it for catching big tuna in the pacific when he was in the Navy, I've been using it ever since. It doesn't work for braid very well so I use a Palomar with it, but I use the sd jam with everything else. That said- this looks cool and I love learning new knots- thanks. I like knots I can visually confirm- the sd jam is that way, you can look at it and see if it's tied right or not. This one is the same way- I like that. I'll give it a shot- it might give me a bit more confidence when flipping into heavy slop or dragging through jagged rocks to know I've got a double wrap around my hook eye.
I've been trying this knot for years. I'm a big swimbaits only angled and you need a solid knot. The double uni is probably the strongest knot but it has huge footprint, it's a big knot. The miller knot is small, probably the smallest knot you can tie with doubling the line. It's strong enough to handle a Hinkle or Hiroshima trout glide with no worries
✨✝️✨ Got to try the Miller Knot; currently, I tie the Trilene Knot. On the Big “O” you not only need a good knot, a well beefy knot that can take a pounding through the foliage. Retiring every hour is sometimes a good idea. Also after catching a big’em.
I watched this video because of another video you posted recently. Everybody has their favorite knot. So a knot is a personal preference, but my question to you is why you would choose the Miller knot over the double Palomar knot. Being on water is about being efficient, so spending more time fishing and less time tying knots. Seems like the double Palomar knot is a more efficient and takes less time tie. I would argue it may be a stronger knot. I know it's a matter preference, but I would like hear your thoughts on this.
total preference. I havent broken a miller knot since i started using it two years ago and I actually can tie it faster than a double palomar. A single palomar i could tie faster.
As a tree climber by trade who has to remember a bunch of 'rope knots' and as an angler lots of 'fishing knots', I gotta say that looks pretty complicated. It also looks like it would be a great knot so I'm off to grab a spool of line and a hook to try and practice right now haha I didn't even think there were any knots I didn't know but im fairly certain this one's new to me. Edit: that wasn't to difficult. The first time I tied it I accidentally left out the twist step and i still couldn't break it with 8lb TrileneXT mono.

I like trying new knots also A couple years ago I was having trouble with knots breaking with floro on my medium swimbaits 6", then I used a knot I can't remember name for while & was ok. Now I've been whatever floro knot Randy B, put out on his channel last year or so ago on my medium & large swimbaits 6"-10" . I have had good luck with it so far. Not sure what it's name is, but I can tie it quickly & I re- tie alot with floro exspecialy large baits!!!

Hey Matt, would you consider doing a Trilene Knot with 6-7 wraps (instead of only 2 like the Miller Knot) on the main line before doing the final Miller Knot figure-8 at the end? I will do this and get back to you on how it works.
Looks interesting. I use the uni knot on EVERYTHING. Flouro, mono, and braid. It has never failed me. Although sometimes I just feel like it's weird with braid. Thoughts?

@@MattStefanFishing Double Pitzen knot actually has 2 lines through the eye of the hook. Your Miller knot just has 1 line looped through twice. There's a BIG difference! Double Pitzen will do the trick, and it's easier to tie, to boot.
Just wondering what knot was you using before this one I've learned alot of knots but first I've heard of this one I use the Palomar knot for braid but know it doesn't work well with floracarbon
I've never heard of the miller knot. The rule of thumb I go by is the lighter the line the more twists you need. Is that true with this knot? I ask because I'm a trout fisherman but adapt some of your techniques to my application. With that said I primarily use 4lb test.
This seems to be a variation on the Trilene that also goes through the eye twice but with more wraps around the main line and no second loop at the top. Used the Trilene universally with mono and never had a problem however, find it doesn't seem to want to cinch quite as well with fluoro. Also using it with braid but not sure how it will hold up. Will probably go with the Palomar or double Palomar for tying direct like in your video. Worked all winter on braid to fluoro knots and finally ran across one I think I can trust and can tie relatively quick. Don't believe it even has a name but a take-off on the Alberto. Two questions Matt. Do you know who the knot is named for? Do you think it will work for monofilament? (Not braid). I primarily use the palomar knot, the advanced clinch knot, and the double uni knot. Willing to try this one. ✌🏻🎣
Super easy to tie? Says you, now we know your definition of easy. Tightening that knot down with flouro is probably a mainline kinker. Is that a 100% knot as it looks like there could be a lot of opportunity for synch chaffing?
@@MattStefanFishing To prove it is a 100% knot you have to take it to the point of breaking and measure the yield relative to the Mfger's given line strength. That quite involved knot looks like it would leave kinks in your (non-braided) mainline after tightening.
Just look at the scuffing variation on the face of that knot after tightening, I think Procol Harem would say, "The Miller's face at first just ghostly, turned a lighter shade of pale."
There is just too many damn knots people are coming up with these days. I can count on one hand how many times my knots failed and they have been around forever. However, there have been a few knots as of late that have been good for connecting flouro to braid besides the double uni knot which is what I have always used...JMO
It seems to me that any knot that you put two loops through the eye of the hook and keep them separate or not on top of each other followed by a finishing knot that locks the two eye loops in place are all equal. I don’t think that is any better than the trilene knot Comments?
Will give this a try but the other super awesome knot for any type of line is the double line uni knot. I’ve done a lot of my own pull tests and the double line uni is the best I’ve found so far. The line will typically not break at the knot like it does with most knots. Quite a few pros use it as well. Wait for my videos. I teach the best. As for pros, Brent Ehrler knows his knots. The problem with all these knot videos is failing to recognize that all all cinch knots are the same. When you cinch, the weakest point is outside the knot where it cinches, not the knot itself. Therefore, for hooks, the Eagle Claw knot on snell hooks is best regardless of hooks, except for assist hooks and such. In the UK, they call this knotless knot. On swivels, this knot doesn't work so something like a polymar may he best....however, it is critical to know that polymer do fail, esp. at lighter weight. For most applications, the standard cinch knot is ok and there are many variations of this same knot under different names.
I don't do any knots with tag end pointing up....catches bits of grass and will ruin 10-15% of your presentations. Do the Trilene knot instead. almost identical.

You should tie my Fish-N-Fool knot . It is stronger then the Miller knot in all 3 line types by a total of over 5 lbs and it is easier to tie.

i do not like the uni knot with braid. go with the palomar knot for braid. cant beat it.

@@MattStefanFishing Double Pitzen knot actually has 2 lines through the eye of the hook. Your Miller knot just has 1 line looped through twice. There's a BIG difference! Double Pitzen will do the trick, and it's easier to tie, to boot.
Do you wet the line for that last pull to tighten the knot down?
yep! I recommend wetting all knots with fluorocarbon.
Just wondering what knot was you using before this one I've learned alot of knots but first I've heard of this one I use the Palomar knot for braid but know it doesn't work well with floracarbon

I've never heard of the miller knot. The rule of thumb I go by is the lighter the line the more twists you need. Is that true with this knot? I ask because I'm a trout fisherman but adapt some of your techniques to my application. With that said I primarily use 4lb test.
I generally feel like the more twists you have the weaker it makes the knot.

This is the knot you use on the Hover rigs? I've had so many breaks on the hookset lately. I think I was setting g to hard too.

you can but I love the double palomar for braid. Not reason to change if i am comfortable with it.
This seems to be a variation on the Trilene that also goes through the eye twice but with more wraps around the main line and no second loop at the top. Used the Trilene universally with mono and never had a problem however, find it doesn't seem to want to cinch quite as well with fluoro. Also using it with braid but not sure how it will hold up. Will probably go with the Palomar or double Palomar for tying direct like in your video. Worked all winter on braid to fluoro knots and finally ran across one I think I can trust and can tie relatively quick. Don't believe it even has a name but a take-off on the Alberto. It's the first knot in the following video.

Good to see you taking Hank and Duke out on Wednesday evenings. After those footballs they were catching over the weekend they'll be disappointed if they don't win tonight. Our son is 38 now but it seems like yesterday when he was their ago and some of my best memories are those trips. Everyone will tell you they grow up too fast but it is surely a fact. I think it works on all lines, but i use it for fluorocarbon

Two questions Matt. Do you know who the knot is named for? Do you think it will work for monofilament? (Not braid). I primarily use the palomar knot, the advanced clinch knot, and the double uni knot. Willing to try this one. ✌🏻🎣
im not sure where it came from or who made it. As for line it works with mono as well.

Super easy to tie? Says you, now we know your definition of easy. Tightening that knot down with flouro is probably a mainline kinker. Is that a 100% knot as it looks like there could be a lot of opportunity for synch chaffing?

@@MattStefanFishing To prove it is a 100% knot you have to take it to the point of breaking and measure the yield relative to the Mfger's given line strength. That quite involved knot looks like it would leave kinks in your (non-braided) mainline after tightening.
Just look at the scuffing variation on the face of that knot after tightening, I think Procol Harem would say, "The Miller's face at first just ghostly, turned a lighter shade of pale."

There is just too many damn knots people are coming up with these days. I can count on one hand how many times my knots failed and they have been around forever. However, there have been a few knots as of late that have been good for connecting flouro to braid besides the double uni knot which is what I have always used...JMO

It seems to me that any knot that you put two loops through the eye of the hook and keep them separate or not on top of each other followed by a finishing knot that locks the two eye loops in place are all equal. I don’t think that is any better than the trilene knot Comments?
I like it better than the trilene but thats just my opinion. stick with what you have confidence in.

Will give this a try but the other super awesome knot for any type of line is the double line uni knot. I’ve done a lot of my own pull tests and the double line uni is the best I’ve found so far. The line will typically not break at the knot like it does with most knots. Quite a few pros use it as well. Wait for my videos. I teach the best. As for pros, Brent Ehrler knows his knots. The problem with all these knot videos is failing to recognize that all all cinch knots are the same. When you cinch, the weakest point is outside the knot where it cinches, not the knot itself. Therefore, for hooks, the Eagle Claw knot on snell hooks is best regardless of hooks, except for assist hooks and such. In the UK, they call this knotless knot. On swivels, this knot doesn't work so something like a polymar may he best....however, it is critical to know that polymer do fail, esp. at lighter weight. For most applications, the standard cinch knot is ok and there are many variations of this same knot under different names.

I don't do any knots with tag end pointing up....catches bits of grass and will ruin 10-15% of your presentations. Do the Trilene knot instead. almost identical.
