    Written by Tommy James, whose version was also a major hit. In his biography (Me, the Mob and the Music) he said that he wasn't quite sure what girl's name to use for the song. He had an epiphany when he looked out his hotel room window and saw a billboard ad for MONY, which is the acronym for Mutual of New York, the oldest insurance company in the US.

    More Billy Idol you need to hear:
    * Dancing With Myself (recorded by Generation X before he went solo, he took it with him and launched his career off its success)
    * Catch My Fall
    * Cradle of Love
    * Don't Need a Gun
    * Flesh For Fantasy
    * Hot in the City
    * L.A. Woman (covering the Doors, so he's in full Morrison mode here)
    * Shock to the System
    And from after the motorcycle accident in which he almost lost a leg (and did lose multiple major Hollywood acting roles):
    * Bitter Taste
    * Can't Break Me Down
    * Running From the Ghost
    * Scream
    * Speed
    * Super Overdrive
    * World Comin' Down

It was great song then and it is great by Billy, he does this song almost exactly like the afore mentioned Tommy James and the Shondells making it an awesome tribute to that group. This was so much fun and I am sure we danced to this one at my Senior Prom. Thanks for taking me back. I really appreciate the diversity that Billy Idol has in his ability to deliver different genres, something I think I see more in British groups and performers than American, though Billy is British-American and I believe most of his career was happening here in the US. Guys there’s so much to say about this number one I’m sure you’ve been told 100 times by now this is an homage to Tommy James, Tommy James, and the Shondells. Huge influence on rock music for decades this song which number one for Tommy James and the Shondells in the UK. And Billy really really knocked it out of the park with this cover.
    I remember in the 90s and the 2000s this song was still being played in clubs. I would be surprised if it’s not still being played in clubs now. The backing vocals are incredible. And I think really everybody was fanboy/fangirling for Billy Idol.
    We were all in it for that YEAH!
    First thing I ever saw Billy Idol do after his punk days when he was trying to go mainstream was a ridiculous song called “hot in the city”. It was so cheesy and bubblegum. But… It really made me want to hear more. Next thing I know, rebel yell is everywhere! It was a great time to be alive.

    Great song. Gosh memories flooding back. To see and feel the magic of this song, you actually need to be surrounded by generation Xers when it comes on, a few drinks in and then see what happens. WITNESS! PARTICIPATE! Because something does happen. We all make it a call and response song. And it’s x- rated! Billy Idol songs came on 10 years after they were hits and they would go down the same way. Still do. I really think Billy Idol is the actual sound of the 80s. In movies, on the dance floor, at private parties, at the cottage, gravel pit parties, anything… his songs got everyone up and participating. And you only have half the story without us singing our part. If you are ever lucky enough get surrounded by your generation X friends when this comes on after , especially after a few drinks, you will see what happens. Now imagine every single one of your friends and all the people you went to school with going nuts on the dance floor, singing half in the bag at the same time. Yes this happened at weddings too! The funnest stuff ever. Like I said, oh the memories!! 🙂🙂🙂🙂
    I have been one sick puppy and I just got up and danced and I sang out my part of the call/response to this song even though yesterday I could barely walk. That’s what this song does but you gotta be there to know what I’m talking about.

    This was a remake of a 60’s classic by Tommy James & The Shondells. It kind of had a tongue in cheek feel, Billy Idol had a brooding tough guy image, it was a twist to see him do a bubblegum pop song. I think it was an album filler that somehow became a hit. At the same time another punk rocker Joan Jett had a hit with Crimson and Clover from the catalogue of Tommy James and The Shondells

    This was one me and my brothers favorite songs to dance to.
    One night we were on our way to a bar near our home town and got stuck by a stopped train at a railroad crossing a little two lane highway.
    We took the speakers out of the back of the car turned this on and started dancing in the road.
    Before long others pulled up behind us. Some of them got out and danced by their cars and some came and danced with us. Then we noticed that people on the other side were dancing too.
    We kept the music and dancing going until the train started moving again.
    It was so much fun.
    Good reaction guys.

    Tip: If you listen to his hit song "Dancing With Myself," listen to the version he did when he was a member of the band Generation X instead, because it has a guitar part cut out of his solo version, and it goes longer.

    This song is actually a 60's song by Tommy James and the Shondells. There are many versions all edited from the same master. I found an uncut version on FRAT ROCK and edited it longer. This is an easy song to lengthen. Still only 4 minutes and change..

    This version of the song needs to be experienced in a crowded bar or club after a few drinks. It was huge in bars & clubs in the 80s. The call & response section was always a hit, however decorum prevents us from quoting it here.

    I haven't felt this bad about a response since they found a short version of Stevie Wonder's Livin for the City and called it a great positive song.
    Actually, I thought the Tommy James fans would be vicious.
    It's a really good cover
    I like Billy a lot, and he kept everything that's fun about the original. His energy and distinctive vocals are his additions.
