This show was being filmed and I think broadcast live but also to go out on VHS video later on for home viewing, and that part where you laughed at Billy mouthing something to his drummer Liberty Devitto, was when he flubbed the lyrics.
This concert was from 1982 and earlier on in the year Billy had been knocked off his motorcycle by a car and broke his right wrist and left thumb and needed surgery, that ended up with the bone in the tip of his left thumb being removed. He then had to tape it up to support it and that is him shaking out his hand because of that.
And the bloke in the "pink" shirt (I think it is actually white but the lights might be changing the colour) is Mark Rivera, who at the time was the newest member of Billy's band and had not yet played on any studio recordings of any Billy Joel albums and this was his first tour too, so he was probably quite hyped up to have got the job. Mark is now the only member of this group of musicians still in Billy's band and is currently the longest serving band member at 42 years.
I have seen Billy several times here in London, England and hope to see him again later on in the year in Cardiff, Wales but he and his band (regardless of the member line-up) always put on a great show and from some of your adorable facial expressions, you seemed to quite enjoy this performance too.
he loves motorcycles and he crashed his bike and hurt his hand that is why it taped and he is shaking it.
@@seanscanlon9067have you been able to see the CBS concert?
@@jamishops Hello jami, not yet so far because when I went to Paramount it was saying for US subscribers only, but I understand it is being shown again today so will have another search for it.
If I have no joy, perhaps it will become available somewhere else at a later date. Maybe I can go over to Harri's and watch it at his. 😄
What about you, have you seen it? I did see the outcry over Piano Man getting cut short at the end, and Stephen Colbert did a bit about that on his show. A case perhaps from CBS of:
t was a beautiful song but it ran too long
If you're gonna have a hit you gotta make it fit
So they cut it down to three-0-five:
@@seanscanlon9067 I watched it last Sunday. I was one of the ones who got cut short. Airing it again tonight. I managed to make an mp4 off Paramount +. If you can file share through mediafire I might be able to get it to you. Mike Stutz has shared a lot of things that way with me, but I’m new to uploading it. RUclips would definitely block it.
Oh boy, did you just open a BIG rabbit hole Stacey! You just started a journey into a musician whose storytelling and wordsmithing is rarely equaled, and NEVER rivaled. He has this rare ability to write songs that are almost universally relatable, while still making you feel that he's singing just to you. Amazingly talented artist!
I am a big Billy Joel fan, but he certainly HAS been rivaled. By Elton John for one. By dozens of other singer-songwriters for another. Don't let your love of Billy's work turn you into a slobbering suck-up.
@@mikeymutual5489
Elton had Bernie Taupin and Gary Osborne writing his hit songs unlike Billy Joel who wrote his own lyrics and music. And as far as I am aware, Billy Joel never donned a Donald Duck outfit.
@@TowGunner Thank you for sparing me the effort of an objective and scathing reply. People like what they like, but I still think Billy is the ultimate entertainer. If that makes me a suck-up, I can live with that.
@@TowGunner Your first point is incorrect and your second point is irrelevant.
@@Mister_Samsonite "An objective and scathing reply"? Don't bother if you know nothing about rock music history.
Glad you discovered Billy Joel, such a talent, great music. His single, 'She's always a woman', will bring you to tears
yes i am crying now 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂
@@markvanderstelt8999 Glad you agree 🙂
The sax player/multi-instrumentalist is Mark Rivera, who still plays with Billy to this day. He's an incredibly talented and charismatic dude.
Billy writes his music to take advantage of Mark's talent
Mark also played quite a few times with Ringo on his All-Star tours. Always brought the house down!! He's amazing!
He had been in a motorcycle accident several months earlier that had injured both his hands. He'd actually had the tip of the bone removed from that thumb which is why he had it wrapped up and was shaking it out a few times after piano heavy bits. Still recovering.
"That's all I heard about Brenda and Eddie, can't tell you more, cause I told you already, and here we are waving Brenda and Eddie goodbye" Brilliant line.
Billy's lyrics are amazing. Nearly every song of his would stand as a great poem without music, but along with his amazing melodies, singing, and musicianship... Wow.
"New York State of Mind", "Vienna", "Just the Way You Are", and "Uptown Girl" are a few of his enormous catalog that you need to hit. Incidentally, Billy was married to the supermodel Christie Brinkley, and he wrote 'Uptown Girl' for her. They have a grown daughter who sometimes plays Billy's shows with him, and just recently Christie was in the audience for one of his shows, and he sang the song while they put her picture on the big screen. Even though both have remarried, they remain very close friends to this day.
The most amazing thing about this track is that you could totally picture everything in the song unfolding as exactly Billy Joel describes. How many real life Brenda and Eddies must there be of marriages that started out beautifully, but ended badly. Sad.😭
Each timing change is the introduction to another scene from the Italian Restaurant.
One of the greatest musicians of all time
100th Madison Square Garden performance repeated on TV Friday night.
If you want to see more Billy Joel Live
“Billy Joel: The 100th - Live at Madison Square Garden will be rebroadcast in its entirety on CBS on April 19th at 9:00PM ET/PT.”
"The Stranger" is generally regarded as his best album, and there's not a bad song on it, including this one. Some later gems include "Allentown" and "And So It Goes."
depends on who you are talking to i love this album but i will take 52ND St such a great Album.
Billy's favorite song to play in concert. Pair this with Goodnight Saigon and you have two of the best productions presented live.
Hi Stacey, Piano Man should be the next one. Excellent reaction as always.
Billy Joel is a HUGE talent and has been for AGES! Play all of Billy Joel that you want, you will NOT be disappointed! This song is like a three act play! If you listen again, the song is about the same couple at different stages in their life!!! GREAT song!
Some of his best consist of “Piano man” and “A New York State of mind”,
but you must also hear
“Just the way you are”❤❤ and “Goodnigh Saigon” !! He never disappoints. His “live” versions are superb !!❤
This is the only concert I have ever seen “Front Row center”.
Allentown, We didn't start the fire, Still Rock and roll.
Now we’re talking! One of the best singer song writers in the world. A fellow Long Island boy.
Billy Joel is a top 5 artist of all-time!!! His 70's albums are masterpieces.
If you go down this amazing rabbit hole, I will definitely watch!
So are his 80's albums. And his 90's albums. And he knew when to quit. And when to restart!
As I understand it, this song began as a compilation of several songs, The Ballad of Brenda and Eddie being one of them. Absolute masterpiece. I've heard him rank it as one he's most proud of. Great post.
The way he told it on a snippet from an interview, it was three different songs he couldn’t finish; The Ballad of Brenda and Eddie, Things are OK in Oyster Bay and another one. He took inspiration from the Beatles, his biggest music idols to put them together. The B-Side of Abbey Road is a collection of short songs weaved together so that’s what he did. And it’s brilliant.
I actually think the studio version is better.
His songwriting is immaculate 👌🏼
She's always a woman to me is absolutely beautiful. Its actually my parents' wedding song. Another artist with a huge catalog of hits
Try “You’re My Home.” It’s an early song of his and one of the sweetest love songs ever.
He had so many hits and hidden gems one could have a whole Billy Joel channel.
ICON. Mister Piano Man was arguably the King of Pop. Billys got soul. An amazing musician 💪
Next: „Piano Man“ (Probably his most famous song, as it was his musical breakthrough) But you should do the music video - it‘s like a movie!
Great reaction, Stacey. Billy Joel is an icon and has an extensive library of hit songs. I had the amazing good fortune of seeing Billy in concert several times. At one show in early 1984, Christie Brinkley, who would marry Billy a year later, was in the audience and was in my direct line of view. I do not recall ever seeing Billy or the stage. The music sounded great though! 😁
For anyone interested, here was the setlist:
The Mexican Connection
Prelude/Angry Young Man
My Life
The Stranger
Piano Man
Don't Ask Me Why
Allentown
Goodnight Saigon
Pressure
Just the Way You Are
Scenes From an Italian Restaurant

Encore 2:

Ecc ecc ecc ecc
Love your reaction Stacey. Billy has always been lovingly called the Piano Man. Sit down and stay awhile, you will love his other mega hits!
You'll really like "We Didn't Start The Fire". Addictively catchy. I'm glad you discovered this.. Enjoy!
Can’t wait to explore more :)
i like the song but he has way better to pick from.
My parents, both lifelong professional musicians from 1930-1990, & their generation of musicians, respected Billy Joel for his songwriting more than anything else, but they never saw his concerts, which I think was his strongest asset.
He injured his hand in a motorbike accident a few months before this concert which is why he's shaking it. The guy in the pink shirt is Mark Rivera. He's still in Billy's band.
Elton John, Bruce Hornsby, Jackson Browne all play piano and sing. Great artists. Also Carole King
And Ray Charles, there are quite a few.
Add Sarah McLachlan to the list (eg her song „Angel“)!
Hi Stacy, Ok, so Billy Joel is just about to wrap up his 100th concert at Madison Square Garden and has a video of the show from March. He has played the Garden like once a month for the past 10 years. One of many achievements of his long career. Before his career was started, he played piano in an Italian Restaurant near his home in Hicksville (township of Oyster Bay) on Long Island. His tribute song and "swan song" is "Piano Man" although he is sick of it as are many of us but if you don't know it, then it is a must for you to know. It's just played out. On a humorous note, I had the pleasure of inspecting one of his house in the Hamptons many years ago and while walking through the property, "Piano Man" was playing on the radio. Today he lives mostly in West Palm Beach but still has a house on Center Island (north shore of Long Island). He also has a motorcycle museum of sorts in the Village of Oyster Bay which is basically his collection of motorcycles. When in town, he walks in and grabs a bike and goes riding. All bikes on the floor are gassed up, registered, insured and "ready to ride". On Saturday's and Sunday's the shop is open to visitors. If, on Long Island, stop in. Now, my picks are from the "pretty" or softer side of Billy. They are: Honesty; Just the way you are; New York State of mind; She's always a woman; and "She's got a way". My Cuban friends in Miami would recommend Rosalinda's Eyes. Lastly, you wanted to talk about playing piano and singing. Here is my special pick for you. She's quite a talent herself with a very large catalog of songs herself and almost everything she ever wrote was great. Her name Carol King and her catalog is big enough that they made a Broadway show about her. You need to know her music A few picks here are: So far away; I feel the earth move; You've got a friend; A natural woman; and Will you still love me tomorrow. I could say more but for now I've said enough. Cheers, Ken P
As others have mentioned, this concert came after a layoff as a result of a motorcycle accident. His left hand was severely damaged and there were concerns he might not regain total use of the hand. You’ll notice the tape around his left thumb. Part of the bone is gone. That’s why he was often seen shaking his hand during this concert
Only a matter of months before this concert was filmed Billy was involved in an accident on his motorcycle.
His left hand and thumb were badly broken.
That's why he occasionally shakes his left hand - pain.
Great first introduction to Billy Joel. With so many hits that he has this one usually flies under the radar and doesn't get the props it deserves.
You need to listen to a song of his called Goodnight Saigon.
The most profound anti-war song that I have ever heard or ever will hear. A stunning work.
That song live had me in tears.
Now you MUST see/hear "Piano Man"!
Mark Rivera is an American saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, singer, musical director and corporate entertainment provider who is mostly known for his work with Billy Joel.
I know your young but this man is one of the greatest singer songwriters of all time.I had the pleasure of seeing him live twice in the seventies. He had a bunch. Of number 1 hits and a lot of Grammys including 1 for album of the year.
This song is so nostalgic, I grew up with my dad playing Billy Joel anytime we would go on road trips. All his songs are masterpieces. Love that you have discovered him.
Billy Joel has said that this is his favourite song that he has written.
He began over 50 years ago and has tons of top 40 hits with a massive variety of styles and amazing songs. The rabbit hole is huge for this amazing artist
You want to break my fingers, typing up ALL his best songs? I can tell you this. He’s named after his most famous.
PIANO MAN. Elton John is another legend.
Two of the most beautiful love songs ever written (in my opinion) were Billy's "You're My Home", and "Rosalinda's Eyes". I hope you get to experience them.
💚🎹💚 .. okay Stacey , you found one of the best musicians of all time. He has about 143 great songs .. it is hard to believe that you don't know his tunes. I will give you a few excellent tunes .. try .... "Vienna" .. or ... "Honesty" . For starters. Very happy to see you vibing to Billy Joel. 🎼
My favorite concert ever. And this is my favorite song & performance. So, so much talent
This is one of his personal favorite songs of his.
I love how he says "Brender". My grandfather was from Long Island just like Billy Joel, and he would have pronounced it "Brender" too. 😃
5:48 The reason Billy was shaking his hand was due to a bad motorcycle accident he had a few months prior to this concert. For awhile, it was unknown if the piano man was going to have full use of his fingers.
I'd love to see more Billy Joel reactions - this concert video in particular is amazing. The live versions of his music is so good, paritcularly in the 70s and 80s.
I'm glad that you are broadening your horizons. Billy Joel is the ultimate storyteller with his music. As someone that grew up on long island new York, I can relate to every song. That was the way it was. Congratulations and enjoy the ride.
Thoroughly enjoyed your reaction. A great first sample of the Billy Joel library of hits. For your next stops.....Billy's signature song is "Piano Man"....most romantic song is "Just the Way You Are".....get through those two and there are 50 or so more to sample.
Billy wrote a LOT of great songs. Really hard to go wrong listening to him.
Have fun with the Billy Joel rabbit hole, you'll be there awhile... Great musicianship and great story teller!
The only concert I’ve ever seen front row center !!
It took me a week to close my mouth !!❤❤
So about his hand, earlier that year in 1982, Billy got into a motorcycle accident and crushed his hands, thankfully he made a full recovery but here you can see hes still dealing with his thumb a little and has to shake it out every once and a while.
He's a big man on Mulberry Street ;0
Stacey’s voice is so relaxing
Aww thank you!!
Every one of his songs has a few likes that get you
I’ll meet you anytime you want at our Italian restaurant - we all have an old friend that we would drop anything for.
Then the king and the queen went back to the green but you can never go back there again. As you get older sometimes you just wish you could go back.
My all time favorite of his songs!
The guy in the pink shirt is Mark Rivera. He’s also played with Ringo Star, Hall & Oates, John Lennon, and Simon and Garfunkel among others. He is amazing and we love him to pieces.
Great reaction to a fantastic storyteller. He has a large array of hits spanning decades. You should check out Piano Man.
Great reaction, Stacey! Billy has so many great songs for you to get to!! No rush for these ones, but please put them on your list of "Billy Joel songs to get to one day". Please react one day to "Until The Night" and "An Innocent Man"!!
If you can find the live (pretty sure it’s from Yankee Stadium) version of Prelude/Angry Young Man, check it out. The Shea Stadium is OK, but it’s older and doesn’t have the same videography and light show. It used to be his opening song, but he’s unable to play it now. Once you hear the piano intro, you’ll understand why.
I’ve seen them live in the early 80s ; he was amazing!!❤❤❤
I see an Elton John reaction in your future. This was probably the 4th or 5th popular single on "The Stranger" album but was always my favorite from this album. Basically 3 songs rolled into 1 and was a great deal of fun to see in concert.
His songs have a wide range of styles, He's a National Treasure one of the best Singer Songwriters ever. Great piano player. Massive number of hit songs. Loved your reaction Stacey!
At 5:40 when he's shaking his hand, it's because he's banging the living 💩out of the keys and he has to shake it off between sections.
Actually … before this show he had broken a bone in that hand and he was nursing it.
Love the music you bring to the table and your reactions are like 🍒s on top keep up the outstanding work darlin 👍
This is truly a masterpiece by Billy, classically trained pianist, his songs are way above the average fool's out there. A master of his craft. a master story teller and conveyor of the human condition and emotions, yet he also has some fun rockin' ones. Billy is a New Yorker all the way. Most emotional profound song from him IMO is Goodnight My Angel [Lullabye]...here that, you'll cry. I consider Billy Joel a national treasure and the George Gershwin of his era. If you don't know who Gershwin is, get educated and look him up.
He is great in concert too
Billy is Rock/Pop royalty of the highest level: 160 million albums sold, 23 Grammy nominations, 33 self-composed Top 40 hits in the U.S. Gifted (brilliant) songwriter and classically trained pianist. Too many great songs to single out a recommendation, but "Piano Man" could be the starting point and is considered a signature song ...
But some of his best songs were not one of those 33 hits. Such as this one!
Billy Joel is a magnificent storyteller in his songs. He is also a great pianist and vocalist.
They are a great band. To see Billy showcase his piano skills even better watch Prelude to an Angry Young Man. If you get the right video he playsincredibly flawless with a broken thumb. You can see a big bandage on it.
Billy is a MASTER songwriter and story-teller. The man has THREE greatest hits albums! In addition to love songs, Billy also writes about the real world. He wrote "Allentown" about the plight of the steel-workers in the Pennsylvania mining town. He wrote "Goodnight Saigon" about vets returning home from Viet Nam. He wrote "The Down'Easter Alexa" about how the North Atlantic fishing grounds are being over-fished, and fishermen like the ones Billy grew up around now can't make a living. He wrote "Uptown Girl" while he was romancing Christie Brinkley, he wrote "Leningrad" about a family he met while being the first American artist allowed to tour the old Soviet Union. And he wrote the classic homage to his hometown, "New York State Of Mind", which you may have heard sampled. And these are just his HITS!
This might be the deepest rabbit hole you go down.
If I might make two suggestions: the first is one you'll hear from everybody, because it's a fabulous song ~ "Piano Man", which he wrote about his time playing lounge piano under an assumed name, while he waited for his terrible record contract to expire. The other suggestion is a song you may not hear played much, but Billy called it one of his five favorite songs. It's a quiet, moving song about the risks of giving your heart to another, and It's called "And So It Goes".
Strongly recommend the studio version, too! Great reaction!
If you are on a journey of musical discovery, I would like to recommend three songs. “At Last” recorded by Etta James in 1960. “Unchained Melody” recorded by The Righteous Brothers in 1965. “Blue Bayou” recorded by Linda Ronstadt in 1977. All three songs were written years before these artists recorded them and have many other versions available, theses three are considered the gold standard. If you can listen to the earlier versions before you react to these recordings, you will truly appreciate the the artistry of these vocalists.
If you want something less cute with a more hard rock edge, try Big Shot and You May Be Right
You need to play "Always a women & Just the way you are" two of my favourite Billy songs.
One of my fav live performances ever. Somewhere along the line old grey whistle is a quick fun song.
“Up and coming artist”😁 Glad you like Billy Joel. He is a fantastic musician with a huge back catalogue. He has been entertaining the masses since the 70s and possibly earlier.
"Uptown Girl" with his then future wife and a song about his then girlfriend. The #1 and #2 Supermodels in the World at the time. The Wife of his daughter Alexa Rae Joel (subject of several songs as a kid) who is a singer in her own right now.
Huey from The Boys revived his career.
Totally unrelated, but when it comes down to „songs one should have reacted to“, I recommend: Dire Straights: Sultans of Swing (But only the Alchemy live version!!!), Metallica: Nothing else Matters and Alanis Morissette: You oughta know or Nirvana: Smells Like Teen Spirit!
Yeah I love Billy Joel. He has "more" than a way about him.
Singing and playing the Piano: See Billy playing with Sir Elton John (I did once) that is an experience.
A key to understanding Billy Joel's music is New York City and Long Island. So many songs deal with the NYC, LI and New Jersey area. I listened to him while living overseas whenever I was homesick. I grew up on Long Island.
Great reaction, and it's so enheartening to see you really "get" the various aspects and styles of rock'n'roll. Billy is one of the great storyteller/showman players, similar to Elton John (whom he has toured with in a double-piano bill).
Billy's end-of-the-party major classic is "Piano Man." It's the song that has literally had people holding hands and swaying together at 3am across america for decades. Common staple of late-night campus.
Tender love song: "Always a Woman". Wild rocker-biker song: "You May Be Right". 1950's doo-op revival tune "For the Longest Time" (studio version is all him harmonizing). Pop-vocal radio pleaser "Uptown Girl" and so many others.
To get your love of piano rock ultimate song even more embedded in your soul, also check Elton John's "Funeral for a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding" combo track. It's just... just all that.
Stacey,if you have listened to Queen you have heard Freddie Mercury play piano and sing. Billy was married to christie Brinkley for a long time.
If you want to understand what a piano and songwriting genius he is, check out his Old Grey Whistle Test live performance of "New York State of Mind"
Nothing better than someone discovering Billy Joel's music for the first time! This is my favorite Billy Joel song and performance of it -- even though there IS a lyric flub, but I suppose it's only noticeable if you know it word for word, but he plays it off fine. He was actually playing with a recently healed broken thumb which he injured in a motorcycle accident. I think you'd really enjoy his other music, as he covers so many genres and his lyricism is masterful. For something really romantic, you could try "She's Got a Way" (live from Songs in the Attic) or "Just the Way You Are."
I like you. Tip: try to always play live performances, as your first choice. Love your appreciation of Billy. I heard you say the song was cute. Not cute, but, romantic. The 70s and 80s, well most of the past, was all about people. People, relationships, experiences…all face to face😊. You will be good at this!!!
Thank you for listening to one of ours!!!
Stacey, this past Sunday on CBS, they aired Joel’s 100th consecutive (monthly) concert at MSG! As in this footage, he still has the same band members.
There are few pianists as talented as Billy Joel, especially whilst singing. One such is Australian comedian (and Tony award winning Broadway musical composer) Tim Minchin. After you're done with the Billy Joel rabbit hole, I strongly suggest that you check Tim out.
Great reaction!
He sold out Chase Field (AZ Diamondbacks Baseball Stadium) last December at 73!
Great choice and reaction, Stacey! I almost spit out my coffee when you described him as an up and coming artist 😅. Of course, your next sentence revealed that you were only kidding.
He has lots of fantastic music to check out.
🤣🤣 yes just a little joke!
check out Hotel California by the eagles to see a singing drummer
The other great pianist of this era is Elton John, who was actually the #1 act in the world after the Beatles broke up. You should check him out.
He's one of the best lyricists in music. Kind of an every persons songwriter. you might want to check out Piano Man, Angry Young Man and, well... everything.
For another „song with piano“ I recommend Olivia Rodrigo: either her live performance of „Driver‘s license“ on a piano or her music video of „All I want“!
