I'm 74 and live in clutter. I have a whole shelf full of record albums, I have a bookcase of movies and TV shows, I have over a thousand books, most of which I have read -- several times each. I have 11 cats I call my little monsters. I am taking a writing course and an art course. I also have a household of furniture I hauled home from garage sales or the side if the road. I restore antiques and plan on restoring some modern furniture that I have. I NEVER get bored. I have done volunteer work -- taught a literacy class at the jail and then at a school for pregnant teens. I do not want to go to Heaven because, as far as I am concerned, Heaven is right here and now. So take your silly advice and stuff it where the sun doesn't shine!! LOL!!

I'm 79, a widow, my husband was a disabled veteran. I was his caregiver for 10 years out of the 35 years we were together. Now that I'm alone, I'm enjoying the solitude. I garden, do a little charity work. What I really hate is people that feel because I live alone, I must be lonesome and they want to constantly visit me. No, I'm not lonesome. I have a house to take care of, I have hobbies, I like to read, sit on my terrace and enjoy my beautiful flowers because I love to garden. Sometimes I like sitting quietly and just watch the birds in my birdbath, or take my coffee out on my terrace and enjoy my beautiful flowers. I worked my entire life for an airline, I lived in NYC, so I had constant people around me my entire life. Now, I like being alone and I don't care how weird people think I am. I don't drink, I don't overeat, I don't do doctors and I don't own a cellphone and I manage to live and breathe. I have a few years left, if that, and I'm going to do what I want to do with those years, not what other people think I should do.

Hm. Well, I do get lonely but many are too busy or too self-involved to want to visit. Also, I don't text and that throws a lot of people off. Many can't handle doing phone calls. I do really admire the fact you don't have a cell phone. Many I know couldn't survive without their phone.

I am 77 and live alone since my wife passed two years ago. Your comments were helpful. Thank you. Finances are well managed. I am a retired accountant. I have joined a retirees group to help with loneliness. I employ a good yardman to look after the lawn and some gardening. My kids have promised to look through my wife's stuff and take what they want. 2 years later it is yet to happen. I rarely see them. But I really do need to declutter the home in several places. A community support group comes each fortnight to help clean the home. I usually walk 14,000 steps most days. I cared for my wife with MS for 26 years. She wasn't able to ambulate for the last 15 years. It was a very big job. I had a heart attack and pneumonia as a result but I am keeping very well now.

    • @angelabluebird609

Your adult children may be avoiding looking at your wife's belongings as part of not accepting her passing. You can give them a date by which this must be completed, or you'll need to make other arrangements. I understand, caregiving truly is a big job. After I became a widow, I was glad to pass on my husband's clothing, coats and things, so someone who needed them could put them to use. Of course, I'll always keep some of his belongings as sentimental, but knowing someone who was cold now has a coat matters, and would have pleased him. Take care.
PS My oldest living sister recently entered a nursing home, as she needs 24/7 professional nursing care. I learned some of the residents did not have basic clothing. It was not difficult to collect proper clothing, in fine condition, in various sizes so these folks could have basics.

Just before I turned seventy, I moved to 32 acres that my son bought for me. I have no tV (but am glued to youTube. I have no washer, dryer, or dishwasher. I lived in the house at first but found it wasn't built to release heat in summer so I started renovating a delapidated cabin. My neighbor restored the missing floor that had rotted out. From a shed we found all sorts of insulated windows all free. I restored the walls. (this is all over the last ten years) I studded up and built three walls from scratch. My young grandchildren got to paint the walls after the insulation was in, then I put the walls up. When I hit a snag along the way, I'd get a contractor, to put in plumbing electricity, The bathtub was $88 , a stock tank. A room had to be torn down, I didn't do that but have used the material in all sorts of other things. Like building a screened in porch. A year ago August I wanted the room back. The contractor did the whole room after my grandchildren and I prepainted and stained all the material I had ready for him and his helper. My son wanted me out of the house as the steps to the basement where the bedrooms are were too steep for an aging lady. During this time I had lots of kidney stone surgery, breast cancer surgery. My son lives six hours away. My neighbors believe only Fox and News Max. I have two riding mowers to keep the growth down. Most of my stuff is electric now, no hauling gas. When I get to sit down, here I am. Never, ever lonely. Cats show up. I care for them all. Working on number 13 now. Big party of blue friends a week ago planned by my son on my 80th birthday. Planted trees, ordering more raspberriy busshes. All my books are on Kindle so the world of books is my oyster. I just don't have time to get lonely. Oh, I pay the taxes, the insurance, the generator, all the repairs. that was my agreement with my son.

At 78, I find that most people do not want to have anything to do with the elderly. Not even your own family. In fact, some of them go out of their way to hurt you because they think you are not good enough to even breathe. I even get harassed by some of the children in the neighborhood. I understand how you feel, but, I really don’t believe it’s lack of caring on our kids part generally, but more so the pace of life is almost impossible for many of them, either long commutes, double incomes to exist, etc, etc. And possibly in part because we continue to plug along it’s easy for them to see us as a fire they don’t need to put out just yet. No one has weekends off to go visit Grandma, who now lives out of town because they had to move away for a job. Or perhaps they are splitting childcare while working weekends, or they are traipsing their kids to planned activities because people can’t just open their door to their kids and say “have fun, come back when the streetlights come on”, etc etc. Everyone’s life is orchestrated to a ridiculous level. I have four adult kids who are right out straight. I know they would drop everything for an emergency I might have, and I’d love to see more of them, but we cannot go back to days of yore, there are just too many obstacles and people to deal with now, not always out of preference. Three generation families were often the norm years ago as well, not as possible these days.

I like the way the narration is presented in your videos, because they touch upon real issues and offer common sense approaches to how to move forward each day. I also like the underlying sense that we need to forgive ourselves for all that we cannot do that we have been used to doing all of our lives; that is to say, for us to not to be so hard on ourselves. I love that it is implied in your various videos. At age 75, and coping with severe chronic pain and other health issues, I still deal with the guilt that comes with not being able to be more involved with family, friends or doing volunteer work. I do spend a lot of time alone in my apartment because I don't feel well. But one thing I like about your videos, too, is the presence of one constant message that comes through: take care of yourself, which includes making sure you have a routine that also involves some form of exercise even if it's for a short period. And the video here also addresses the realistic issues around limitations that we, as older people, often experience in different ways. For example, instead of thinking we need to go visit somebody physically, if that becomes increasingly too difficult to do, a phone call can be just as important. Now it has become an effective substitute for something that was unrealistic to something that you are able to actually do. I live within a very short walking distance of two different grocery stores that provide most everything you need or want for your day-to-day needs. On days where I want to get out and get some shopping done, but the presence of pain is creating some clear limitations for walking great distances, I will take my car and go to each parking lot, where I will then park in a space that's on the outer edge of the parking lot as an incentive get a bit of walking in. Plus, if I need to buy any bulky and/or heavy grocery items, instead of trying to haul them home by hand, now I've got my car to help me with that, as well. ~ So, can Elderhood be defined as "The Golden Years?" I think we know the answer is relative to our own (present) personal challenges and experiences. How we define the "golden years," in the way that it implies that they are filled with joy and promise, is found more in our daily attitudes toward how we want to approach life, and how we want to perceive ourselves in the world, and especially in how we relate effectively with other people in a spiritual way, one that conveys love and a deeper understanding.

As a 78 year old, living alone i have learned to cherish my alone time and make time to do so many things I never had time to do before. I feel so very grateful . I have learned to love and appreciate who I am. Time for introspection and give to others what I can keeping strong boundaries. I love to put my thoughts and feelings on paper or write using an app on my iPad. Thank you for the excellent topics.

I am 67 years old just had a birthday. My life is a lot different now that i live alone. As a younger women i was very very active with my associates and had a lot of outside activities. Now i have a sight impairment, knee replacement that is still healing. Overweight, over active thyroid aches pains and cant move the way i use too. I live alone with my Son who is gone and when he does come home he goes to bed. I need to be active so i stay connected to my church of 15 years. I mentor the women and pray with them and help them when they need a listening ear. I sing and play on our worship team. I love my crafts and it brings me much joy i do it nearly everyday. I still try to keep my home clean by having my Son help me. Its important for me to keep going even though i find my life is so different and difficult now that im older. As senior citizens we much stay strong and hang in there and do the best we can. Reach out for help when uts needed. Thank you for this video it actually is a blessing!!!

I am 80 years old. My grandson starts with me. He is 21 years old. I see him for about 15 minutes in the mornings, because I get out of my room around 10am. He leaves home around 12 noon for work. I downsize and moved to this area a year now. I live far from my old area. I cut down on my driving. I do not have a TV and do not want one. I go to a senior center where I enjoy the company. I stay busy. I like and enjoy a well kept home. I pray and have devotion every morning. I also do stretching exercise in the morning. I do some crafts, and I also sew. For my 80th birthday I started a RUclips channel “Retirement living with Travis “ I am struggling with it. I like the challenge. I pray not to give it up. I feel that it is good for my brain. I have never been board and do not know what it is like to be board. I brought up 5 kids and 3 grandkids. I count my blessings.

If you are a female living alone, you will undoubtedly attract neighborhood bullies. I have experienced this at 3 different homes. They will park their cars to block your driveway and do all sorts of things to test you. I nip this in the bud, the minute they start up with me. Recently, I had two neighbors ask me why I was walking down the street in front of their homes. I asked them both, do they own the streets that I walk on (for exercise.) If not, they should mind their own business.

Unable to get to the telephone, he lay there on the bedroom floor for 16 hours. Fortunately, his housekeeper was due to arrive the next morning. He begged her just to let him lie there & die. One of his friend tripped over a throw-rug in his bathroom & hit his head on the toilet. He died of a subdural hematoma at age 87.

Don't wait till loneliness creeps in? Too late. I've never been married, have had very few girlfriends, and have never known how to even get someone in my life. So I sit here, retired and living alone since my parents are gone and I'm an only child. Loneliness has been what my life has been about for so long, I've given up on trying to find someone. Being no good at getting women hurts, and I've never been any good at it. Secondly., I have no interest in joining groups. All other old people talk about is 1) their wife -which I have and had none 2) their kids - which I've had none and 3) their grandkids -which obviously I have none of them. I have no common interests and don't care to give a crap about their lives which I could never relate to. When I'm sick I have no one to help me, and an occasional phone call to or from a friend doesn't wipe away my depression, lack of self confidence, and lonliness.

I am 77 and although I have been married twice that ended up in divorce, last one was 22 years ago, I realized that I actually prefer to live alone.
And after many years of psychology therapy, I also realized that I am a 100% introvert and it is natural for me to seek solitude.
My ex and I discussed this finding and at least now we can talk to each other in a somewhat civil tone and thank God the screaming and yelling at each other is now almost non existent.
So, I suggest to people that they should check out if you to might be an introvert--hey, it's better than an argument.

I mean, when I die, I won’t have any thoughts about my body nor who finds it nor what happens to it because I’ll be dead then! Someplace else. Some other level of existence. It’s so much more important what you do or don’t do in life before death. In other words: make amends now while you can and give back all you have stolen and pay back all you owe and have cost your victims.

I am 76 years old and have no close friends or family. No one checks on me to see if I am well. That doesn't bother me so much but what would happen to my animals? If they hadn't been left outside they would probably starve to death inside the house or inside their coop. I hate to think about them suffering just because I am no longer here to care for them. For me to die is only to be set free. I am ready to go home now.

y si yo no puedo verte
por qué Dios me hizo quererte
    para hacerme sufrir más?
Siempre fuiste la razón de mi existir adorarte para mi fue religión

    el calor que me brindaba
    el amor y la pasión.
Es la historia de un amor
    como no hay otro igual
