    The best piece of advice I ever got was to get as loose and numb as you can, and then get looser. I started trying to become too loose, just to see how far I could take it before it ruined my shot, and that's when I started getting real power and snap off the disc

    This is EXACTLY where I am at in my disc golf journey. After a gauntlet of tournaments I'm taking 2 months off and starting over with intense focus on step-by-step technique.
    It is so difficult, good luck Jonathan!! Here's to hoping we both come out better on the other side.

    The way I imagine it is like when you spin in an office chair and bring your legs in it speeds you up, and when you extend your legs the spinning slows down. Driving form is basically spinning in the chair 180 degrees. You start with your legs extended and then the power pocket is the speed gained from tucking everything in. Then you use the speed you gained from bringing your weight to center in the 'power pocket' and extend the arm, capturing the speed you made while tucked.

    Definitely where I struggle the most, after almost 3 years, is trying to relax. My best shots are my slowest and most relaxed, but it is STILL totally counter intuitive. I try and focus on thinking of my hips rotating my shoulders and let my arm be as loose as possible, while still gripping the disc. Let’s get smooth and fast together everyone!🇸🇪🇨🇦

      Saw a recent video from a finnish instructor who said "NO, PERKELE, DONT ROTATE, ONLY SHIFT WEIGHT TO FRONT LEG AND HIP" and it's actually a bunch easier. The rotation comes naturally and i dont have to think about it.

      See I'm behind y'all. I don't think I've ever actually focused on my hips. Just all arms and shoulders. I definitely don't ever feel relaxed. This look like another hard addition to the game that's gonna be fun to learn.

      Something I remember Tristan Tanner saying went something like "trying to go faster never results in better" when you're trying to learn a new movement. Slow down until it's correct and you don't have to think to do it correctly.

    I’ve never been able to find someone to explain it this way. I always ask “am I supposed to try real hard with arm” but no one can really answer. So this was super helpful. Explaining it to be more like a slingshot and where to do that is helpful. You guys are my favorite disc golf RUclips channel. Very entertaining and educational!

    • @mattsnyder4754
      @mattsnyder4754 2 года назад +1

      Yep. Your arm is actually one of the least “used” muscles.
      Hips are working hard. Torso and shoulders are rotating hard. The arm can basically just be a noodle outside of the little bit of muscle involved in actually “aiming”

    holding your disc *really* loosely and going through the throwing motion like you do in your kitchen, then tightening your grip RIGHT at the end and letting the disc rip will help your body understand how to throw more relaxed.

    I was out practicing with some putters this morning and was trying to focus on my throws as a whole body movement, a complete, fluid motion, not worrying about power or distance. By doing this and adjusting to a fan grip I feel I had a really useful session and it felt like each disc flew more true to their numbers and flight paths. My Runes flew straight and the Proxy and Stabilizer faded reliably as expected. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow with my mids.
    I’ve been learning and laughing a lot with the team and really appreciate what Lat64 and Jonathan have done with this series.

    I still have a long journey to work on form, it has helped me to imagine driving with my shoulder, not my arm or hand. If you time the drive with your shoulder, it should sync with the rest of the power your lower body is producing. Imagine a horizontal string pulling your shoulder forward after the reach back. Just be as relaxed as a puppet and slow it down if need be. I have trouble with trying to rip through the disc after the pull back and It’s throwing the whole sync process off. Gonna have to try some field work at 20% power and just try and get into that power pocket flow. Also be conscience of leaning to forward or back. A good visual of a a hoola hoop around you.

    This works super well for me:
    During the run up, keep the x-step small and fast, then there’s a delay, and then you plant step. This extra half second that you buy yourself allows you to do some key things: lets all your joints catch up and hover in the right position, allows you to check your aim is true, and most importantly… RELAX. This way, as soon as your plant foot touches the ground you’re already positioned to snap everything forward

    I'm in the same boat as you. I can be fluid as you can, when we don't have a disc in our hand. We can let the arm be a whp and it looks great. Put a disc in our hand and we stiffen. up and that whip is really hard to obtain. So def in the same boat. Would like to know how to disconnect that stiffness when holding a disc firm.

    I very recently had a breakthrough with the wrist. Even if I time my reach back with the last step I don't get the timing just right unless I also extend the wrist and let it curl during the throw. Something worth playing around with, we are all different in terms of levers and the wrist position can add just a little bit of lag.

  • @Kriss_941
    @Kriss_941 2 года назад +1

    I think what you said at the end is 100% true, slow things down and you might just end up adding alot of distance to your throws. A slow, but smooth and well timed throw will still net more distance than a fast, but sloppy run-up. even if you look at some of the pro's like Tristan Tanner who played amazing now at worlds what you can see is that he's pretty much just walking through his "run-up" but he's still one of the furthest throwing players out there and he would probably smoke James Conrad in a distance competition, even through JC has one of the fastest run-ups in the game...

    Good vid!
    Been through this, too, but I have corrected it. Now I throw straight and far. Also hyzers and anhyzers got way more accurate.
    If the upper body is not turned enough and early enough, the shoulder has to work to correct the direction. Also the energy does not properly get transfered from the hips to the shoulders, making a power compensation with the arm. That results in an arm throw and stiffness.
    Turning properly leaves the shoulder out of the equation completely, because using it would make you throw some 45 degrees to the right.
    However, I don't think "you are water" is a good enough advice. 😄
    So how to turn correctly? Learn to use the non-throwing hand correctly. Slinging it down and forward will turn the shoulders and the whole body with it. This transfers the energy properly from the hips to the shoulders in a manner where nothing gets left behind.
    The sling happens right after the right foot has planted and just before turning for the throw. Hard to explain but the point is that it happens a little earlier than one might expect. Experimenting too early and late will result in a sense of the proper timing.
    Please note that a proper weight transfer and hip turn is necessary precursor for this. This was shown well in the video in my opinion with the single step drill.
    Weight transfer (feet) -> Hip turn (hips) -> Left arm sling to turn shoulders (shoulders) -> Slap to 10 o'clock (wrist)
    Hope this helps 😊

    a trick that has helped me be smooth is to throw the Champion max weight MAKO3 the reason is IF you throw this disc hard at all it will turn over and burn into the ground you basically have to throw it like youre trying to lay up a putter from 40 ft away very soft but let your run up and reach back add the distance not your strength so grab yourself a MAKO3 and try to smoothly throw it on flat angle nose down and it will GLIDE 275-300ft like a LAZER with zero fade and that tells you that you just threw it perfectly this disc is a form helping disc imo and i can throw my drivers with way more accuracy now!

    • @deadtigerworld
      @deadtigerworld 2 года назад

      Yeah, I met and played with a dude on the course that threw the Mako3 really well. I bought one and I feel like I'm turning it over a lot or burning it into a cut roller. It's 180 gram Champion plastic so I think that's max weight? I can't seem to throw it very well. I'll take it out to a field and give it a whirl. Good tip man.

  • @andruboine

    I think something that may help is to think you're not actually pushing and pulling your hand/disc. You're rotating your shoulders on axis. So more power means rotating the shoulders more before rotating them back.
    Your hand is a trebuchet. The further you push the spring down, (Rotating your shoulders back) the farther you can project the rock (the faster your can rotate and snap the disc out of you hsnd)

    Keep up the hard work, Ive seen soo much improvement in your skills from when you first started, even before the improvements from the side by side in this video alone... I've also noticed that you seem to enjoy playing now far more than you ever did in the beginning!!

    I've been playing for 35 years and have muscled many a disc. It's hard to back off. The things that have helped me were touched on by Johannes early on, that the effort we're going for here is quick not strong. The disc isn't a shot-put. It's light. So we don't need to bear down to rip it, we need that loose acceleration. It's funny, i've actually found that if i'm throwing mildly injured I often throw just as good if not better because in trying to be careful with the throw to avoid re-injury it calms the shot down enough to get better timing! 80% is all you need, just like in golf video games--try to huck and things get messy. But it's a process man.

    Jonathan, there was a big difference in the before and after. Here's where! Notice the last couple seconds of the swing. In the second shot you generated so much more power that your whole body keeps twisting after you release! I think its like "follow through". You almost spun yourself completely around.

    Come on Johnny, loosen up and whip the disc. Thanks for my fuse, great disc

  • @4dwyn

    So 1) how do you control the disc and stop it from ripping out early if you're very relaxed? When I grip the disc with any kind off pressure my arm tightens. 2) How do you do the back knee drop and how does that drive rotation? Do you push off the back foot?

    Don't throw full speed without weight in your hand. It can cause injury on tendons. Like a baseball pitcher uses a towel drill. Use a t shirt or hand towel it will snap as a bonus.

    The key for me was leading with the elbow order typ get the snap. That made shoulder stay in place until the follow trough

    Doing the exact thing as you Jonathan.. Using my arm way to much.. Even so with a good throw I can reach 115-120m.. I am also very stiff and this is what I need to work on to get easier distance but also more controlled shots

    • @Latitude64

Men ändå, haha!
