Diana Games Through Time #21 - Half Life (1998)

- Time to return to the first-person shooter genre! This time around Diana will be playing the revolutionary game Half Life. Unlike older first-person shooters Diana has tried, this one has 3D enemies. The in-game storytelling of this game without the use of cutscenes also was unique and new for its time!
In each episode of Diana Games Through Time we will play one PC game from each year in chronological order starting from 1978. We will watch as black and white text on a screen turns into millions of colours in a 3d expansive living and breathing universe. Look forward to a new episode every friday in this 42 episode series!

Hey guys, Friday is here again and to celebrate, it's time to play Half Life!
This game was pretty awesome for it's time, but sadly, Diana wasn't too entertained with it. Stick around for next week though because Diana LOVED Age of Empires 2 (1999)!
Age of Empires 2 is one of those games I didn't expect to enjoy as much as I did.

@@Isaacfess It's not really different from the (non-Source) one on Steam, right? Just the menu screen is changed.
Not changed much really, a few options taken out, I like the effects on the old one more though.

Diana won't be trying out any games as we don't have a VR headset nor do we plan to get one anytime soon. I experienced the Oculus Rift DK2 back in the day (owned, reviewed etc) but I am not ready to get back into VR until it's cheap, 4K, 120fps, well supported in practically all games (somewhat the standard) and most importantly, has good locomotion with real walking, kinda like the Kat Walk C, but better. Also Haptic feedback gloves would make things way more immersive. A lot of that technology exists now, but it's expensive and not widely supported.
I said previously that doing Half Life Alyx would be amazing, but we, unfortunately, won't be doing due to lack of proper equipment at this current point in time.
@@OsFirstTimer Shame. if you need any recommendations the oculus quest is relatively cheap and fully wireless!
@@kbi I was looking at the recently released Oculus Quest 2. It feels like they have gone a little cheap in certain areas though and the weight of the thing is misbalanced. I heard there is a better strap you can buy but... I think I'd rather wait for things to get more refined. VR is moving quite quickly now, I'll get into it again one day :)

Have you played it before, if so, did you manage to finish it? It seems to get pretty hard later.
@@OsFirstTimer on easy mode, it will be a bit tricky but not that hard, keep in mind that speedrunners manage to complete the entire game in 30 minutes

I agree with DIana, this wasn't as immersive. Most of the time you just had to watch and do nothing or keep running, the real action started outside.

What is the machine you show in the picture? It does not look like a PC from 1998 at all. Probably a server or something. It doesn't even have a CD drive, nor a 3.5 inch floppy drive which still would have been in almost every home PC. Without CD drive, how would you install the game? ;)

@@OsFirstTimer Also I know a mod for Half-Life 2 which later became a game called Garry's Mod. And that game came out in 2004.
Don’t know how I’ve never played this game before but it looks quite interesting!
It seems a lot of games tend to follow this pattern; while they remain technically and graphically impressive for their time even today, as the novelty of their technology wears off there isn't really much in the way of gameplay to really hold them up, so they don't age very well.
Except for Half-Life it's the opposite. Graphically it was seen as okay for their time, it got some flak even for not looking that great. It's competitor Unreal which came out around the same time had much better graphics. However it was the gameplay and storytelling where Half-Life really shines. And for that reason it redefined what people expected of a First Person Shooter. Unreal had much better graphics, but it didn't offer anything new in terms of gameplay and storytelling compared to the likes of Quake. So people kept playing Half-Life again and again even years after it was released, while Unreal was not very memorable.

This video would've gone over better and she would've had a better experience with the game if you'd tried something more simple with full FPS controls.
I think the controls and lack of good perspective and navigation really hinder new gamers and its something they should practice before being thrown into an experience they don't really know how to appreciate yet.
Half-Life even includes a tutorial, called the "Hazard Course", which is made for that very purpose. It explains how all the controls work, how to look around, how to move, jump, duck, aim, shoot, etc. Remember, back when it came out, its controls weren't as standard as they seem today, people had to figure it out. I think it was a mistake not to let her play the hazard course first.
@@silkwesir1444 That's actually very interesting. I grew up with 3D games, mostly third-person, so I don't remember developing the intuition, but imagining learning them for the first time is neat.

This would have been much more authentic if the screenmode had been set to 640x480, which is how we actually played it if we had a high-end enough PC back in the day. The resolution shown here would have been a slide-show back in 1998
That is correct, yes. Diana played this game in 800x600 which, while terrible by today's standards, was amazing for its time. I decided for viewer pleasure, to choose the middle ground between authenticity and high resolution.
just saying, the Xbox 360 version of Need for Speed Most Wanted is also quite a graphically impressive game for 2005

2009 is the Sims 3 and 2011 is Driver San Fransico. We record pretty far ahead of time. That being said, Diana Tried Portal out on another channel called "Terrified Mum".
