Not sure why you're surprised, the mod was made as a low-effort joke to poke fun at the people obsessing over the HL2 beta. it literally does not do anything for you if you don't care about that sort of thing (which is most people).
HL2 beta in it's original state is big mess which barely holds together. it's fun to explore. but to get a good somewhat complete experience of what HL2 beta could be Dark Interval mod does a really good job.
