Thanks! I don't personally feel very brutal, but I have been doing this for a while, so maybe I've learned a bit more resolve than I give myself credit for.
You are absolutely my favorite RUclipsr! So concise, professional but friendly, and killer funny!! "I know you're ok, but there are creepy people out there"...I just choked on my coffee!!!
Thanks! Almost everyone who comments on my videos are incredibly kind and insightful, but, once in a while, you get a real creeper. Their comments are equally disturbing and hilarious and typically involve detailed plans for what they would like to do with my feet...
i am always enjoying your videos. they are very informational, with personal insight, well planned, well shot and well edited. thank you for your effort :)
I think I've said this before but your channel is my favourite! I love your style, and I like that your videos are visually pleasing and to the point. :)
Did the same thing a few days ago and it is the best way to keep everything organized. Probably will make it again a few months from now. Loved the video, btw. ❤
Well done. I really appreciate your style of vlogging. Inspiring clothing declutter! I love the Colorado sweatshirt! It is my dream to live there. It might happen in 3 years. I too like to own lots of underwear. I just replaced almost all of them this last Easter. My socks, underwear, and bras fit in one small drawer but I have plenty.
I have way too many hoodies I use as loungewear (like, 8) but they all have sentimental value because I collect hoodies when I visit countries, so I have a few from different Hard Rock Cafes, and one from a museum in New York City. I can't possibly bring myself to get rid of any of them until I've completely worn them out. I will however go through the rest of my loungewear and see what I can part with now!
Ahh, I understand. A few of my lounge pieces are also somewhat sentimental--either from college or acquired on vacations too. I've tried to limit my souvenirs to refrigerator magnets, Christmas ornaments, or sometimes stickers (for my laptop or refrigerator), as I'm trying to avoid adding extra attachment to my items of clothing. I find those items take up less space and they aren't as present in my daily life, so I definitely recommend that souvenir strategy. Or, of course, not taking any souvenirs except pictures, but I'm not quite there yet.
I love your videos Vested Interests!!! I watch your videos and start decluttering instantly! I've got rid of tons and tons of stuff in the past 2 days. Still more to go! And do you have a video on how to declutter puzzles and games?
Thanks! I'm glad they're helping you! I do not have a video on puzzles or games. We actually have a ton of games (maybe 15ish? maybe 20. not more than 20.). I would gladly get rid of the ones we never play (I'm looking at you, Power Grid and Elder Sign), but my husband wants to keep them all. He's been such a sport about everything else though, so he can have this concession.
Totally off topic, but I love the color of your bedroom walls. I'm currently designing from scratch what I hope to be my retirement home (edit to home I hope to build when I retire. Retirement home just sounds...odd) and want a darker color for my bedroom walls and furnishings. It all looks so calm and serene. lol...intentional and put together while wearing pajamas: For reasons not worth explaining, I wore my pajamas one day while giving my son a ride to work. Quick dash there, quick dash home, right? Not quite. I ended up giving someone else a ride home. I apologized for being in pajamas but the person said unless I'd told him, he would have thought I was just wearing pants and a rather strange, but nice, shirt and jacket.
Thanks! It's Amherst Gray by Benjamin Moore. It was already on the walls when we bought the house, which I'm thankful for because I took a million years to pick "plain ol white" for my bathroom. If I got to go back and choose it myself, I might go with something a little cooler, but it is pretty neutral and adaptable and I love it in the bedroom. It's both calm and dramatic to me. Re: put together while wearing pajamas: well, at least relatively put together for just lounging around my house! I'm not sure I'm brave enough to leave my house in them.
I decluttered these categories along with you with your previous video and i'll do it again now! for some reason it's so hard to decide which of my thousand black leggings to donate. why that's the hardest part i really don't know - maybe all my leggings just spark joy?
If those are a real staple for you, I can understand how it might be difficult. You could try to list off your favorite five pairs of black leggings, without looking at them, to get a sense for which you value most. Just a thought. Good luck!
I find it so incredible you only do laundry every 2 weeks! I have 2 kids granted, but between them husband and me I put the washing machine on nearly everyday, sometimes twice a day when there are sheets and towels
Welp, it's just me and the hubs and the cat (and she doesn't wear clothes), so it's pretty simple. Most of my clothing goes into delicates wash, which I do just to increase the longevity of my clothing, so that's what I wash most of the time. My husband is the primary washer of whites and darks, but that's almost exclusively his stuff.
@@VestedInterests My cat doesn't wear clothes either lol Since becoming more intentional and minimalist, I've noticed I take a lot more care of my clothes and Im washing them in delicate cycles too and not putting them in the dryer, I feel more appreciative and want my things to last longer
Hi, I really loved this video. I also do second, and third passes thru categories of clothes. This is kinda a tough category for me though, I only manage to let go of a couple of pieces at a time. My socks and t-shirts are all fun, nerdy and super cute, but I know that I have way more than I wear. plus the temptation to buy more gets me in trouble. Damn you, Redbubble! Anyways, I'll keep chipping away at it. Thanks for the inspiration.
This blows my mind. I have sooo much loungeware, but I honestly wear all of it. I can't stand to wear jeans at home, so I have a plethora of comfy pants. I want to be minimal, but the struggle is real!
it's always so confronting to see how little you have tomstart with and still find stuff you don't use. I am currently in the process of moving and still find it amazing that although I think I don't own as much stuff, there is always room to declutter. About the declutter thing, how do you handle items that you don't use but were very costly? I have the feeling I have to use them but if I use them there is no room to use my favorites.
I plan to make a video on this topic, as I think it is a decluttering challenge many people face. Part of this problem boils down to "sunk cost fallacy." When we spend a lot of money on a item, our brains tell us the value we should be getting from that item should be in proportion to what we spent, so, if we buy something expensive and we don't end up using it, it can be difficult to let those things go because our brains really want us to get some utility out of it, since it was so dang expensive, but our mental state at this point is living in the past. The money was spent a long time ago. It's not STILL expensive, you already bought the thing. Recognizing it for what it is may help to let it go, learn from it, and be careful about future purchases. Another thing to consider is the cost you are actually still paying: it's charging you rent to store it, it's charging you mental and emotional energy every time you look at it and feel guilty, and it's charging you time because it's standing between you and your favorite items. I find that those costs usually outweigh the monetary cost of these purchases, and letting them go can be very liberating.
Vested Interests That would be great. I've heard about the sunk cost principle but never thought about the whole "if you feel guilty if you look at it, let it go". Will be moving soon and I am sure a couple of my belongings won't make it into my new home. Thanks for the inspiration.
Yep! My husband actually bought that for me. In the fall every couple of years, we go on a Gilmore Girls binge. And a Harry Potter binge every October, of course.
Thanks so much for sharing, and congrats on decluttering so much today. Well done. You have been an inspiration since the first video. I now feel ready to tackle my wardrobe. Tadah! Would love to see your spring and summer work uniforms videos. Also, your amazing grey melange blazer from your winter uniform - where is it from? Thanks
Thanks! The grey blazer is hibernating until fall. It's already quite warm in my neck of the woods, so I'm not sure I'll get much use out of it again until it starts to cool down. Then again, air conditioning in the summer can be brutal, so who knows.
Ahh, sorry, I misread. It's from Ann Taylor Loft. It's now on super sale, but it's only still available in a few sizes. www.loft.com/melange-knit-blazer/450804
20/20 rule 🤔hmm gotcha 😎 my lounge stuff isn't that bad. I never really wore pajamas. I'd rather sleep in something multipurpose, like gym wear or even my beach maxi dress. I bought a grown up Cami and pants sleep set that I loved but only wore to bed. It didn't make sense to me. It tore up in the wash and I never replaced it. Maybe if I had a man I would care more about what I wear to bed and at home 😐 probably not 😂 IDK TFS 😊
If you can sleep in something multipurpose, all the better! I only use the things shown in this video for working out or lounging around the house--not actually for sleeping. Perhaps TMI, but I can't stand wearing anything when I actually sleep; I'm the ultimate minimalist there!
I absolutely love your videos, and watching you declutter really makes me want to do the same. Clothes aren't really my problem though. ^^; Please continue making these great videos.
Thanks! When I first started out, I thought clothing would be a really tough category, but I've actually found it to be one of the easiest, perhaps because it's high traffic and difficult to ignore. Good luck with your own decluttering!
I know this probably sounds a bit daft, but do you have Summer/ Spring socks and Autumn winter socks or do you keep them altogether? I've found I'm putting a bunch of socks aside for Summer/ Spring which have more summer themes/ colours. Maybe I should just try and get plain socks? I'm over thinking this. Doing an awesome job. Thanks for inspiring me. Best wishes x
My socks never show, so I never take the pattern or color into account for my outfit, but I do like to have fun socks for my enjoyment. Apart from a sort of private appreciation for the pattern/color, I only care that the sock is appropriate for the type of shoe I'm wearing: I wear my trainers when it's warmer, which calls for no-show socks; ankle boots when it starts to get chilly, which calls for ankle socks; and riding boots when it's very cold, which I wear with knee-high socks. Hope this helps!
Many thanks for your reply. Yes, I clearly need to think more about how appropriate rather than what they look like... unless they have a Christmas or Halloween theme :) Thank you@@VestedInterests
One of my no-show socks and all of my ankle socks are Christmas themed, but I have no problem wearing them any other time as they just remind me of Christmas!
I am really enjoying your videos. Getting a lot of ideas from you! Thank you! :) Quick question: You mentioned that you do laundry every two weeks. How do you manage your workout clothes? I assume you work out a few times a week but only have a couple of workout pants. By the way, thanks to you, I just started the 30 Day Minimalism Game. Fun!! :)
I *used to* work out twice a week, but now it's once a week, and I'm not even consistent with that, which I know is bad. But, back to your question: I have two pairs of work out pants, two work-out-specific tops, and two sports bras, but I also have a handful of tshirts that I'll wear to the gym as well. I also swim at the gym sometimes, and I have one bathing suit. I typically work out for about 45 minutes in an indoor gym. I don't typically re-wear the same shirt to the gym again without washing it, but I have no issue re-wearing the same pants once more. I'll usually roll them up and put them on my dresser or in front of my laundry bin (but not in it), which is on a shelf in one of my bathroom cabinets. My husband has not told me I smell gross, so I think it's ok.
Lovely! Thank you for responding so quickly and thoroughly. I love how practical you are! Very inspiring. Life already feels lighter as I continue to declutter my material world. Thank you!
I was looking for this answer, it makes sense, there should be some sort of basket for clothes that aren’t clean enough for the wardrobe or dirty enough for the laundry basket and can be reworn xD
Do you find that you do more laundry since you have a limited number of these items? I would love to cut my pjs, loungewear, gym wear and underwear down, but I wear them all daily and like fresh sets, and I do laundry once a week.
I do my own laundry, and I do it about every week or every other week, depending on how lazy I am and what clothing needs I have. I actually talk a lot about this topic in my recent "Q & A" video. Hope that helps!
Oh! I have a question. Have you ever gotten rid of something and regretted it? How do prevent this from happening? Cuz I’m craz of closet clean out I got rid of my the cure tee shirt and a pair of work out leggings I loved and I’m pretty bummed about it
I personally have not regretted getting rid of anything. I've decluttered my possessions in waves and over time, so my opinions about my possessions have definitely changed with time. If there's something that I kind of want to get rid of, but the thought stresses me out, I have two options: 1) I can bite the bullet and let it go immediately, and enjoy being free of the item or 2) I can keep it and wait a few weeks and see if I feel differently. A little time often makes it easier, as long as I don't let myself forget about the item and keep hanging on to something I don't need. Re: your regrets: I have a few thoughts: One is that clothing is not a scarce resource, and realizing that was a bit of an epiphany for me, so it might help you too. There are plenty of other t-shirts and leggings out there, and our styles and tastes will change over time, and there will be more t-shirts and leggings in your life. You could also pause and think about why you discarded those items in the first place, instead of focusing on lamenting the items themselves. You decluttered and those items did not meet whatever rubric you were using at the time to decide what to keep. There was something about those items that did not live up to your expectations, so you did let those things go for a reason, and reminding yourself of that could make it easier to move on. Finally, things are just things, but we humans are really good at imbuing objects with more value than they actually have. Your Cure t-shirt may be something you regret because it signaled to you and others "hey, I like this band, and it resonates with my values and my world view," and getting rid of a signaling device like that can feel like getting rid of part of our personalities. Objects are just objects though, and you don't need a shirt to do that for you.
You seemed MUCH more animated in this video than in any of your prior ones. Sugar rush? Drugs? Good news? I am so glad the star pajamas made the cut - they are my favorite.
The star pajamas are also my favorite! Though there's a tear on one of the legs that I need to mend (or, more accurately, ask my husband to mend). Re: animation: I've been wanting to pare down these categories for a while, so I think part of me was excited to finally give it some attention. I was also moving around a bit more in this video, so that may have made me a little more energetic.
I definitely duplicates in the past as well. I remember buying a backup of this one shirt because I thought it was perfect at the time. Of course, I never even wore out the first one and now I don't have either of them. Lesson learned!
I love your voice. And it's fun to watch people declutter stuff.
Thanks, Withy Octopus! L. A. McDonough, yay! Glad your decluttering efforts seem to be going well. Best of luck!
You’re so brutal and I love it! It motivates me to be brutal too because it feels better in the end to have less.
Thanks! I don't personally feel very brutal, but I have been doing this for a while, so maybe I've learned a bit more resolve than I give myself credit for.

The 20 20 rule is genius
Thanks! I mean, I didn't invent it, but I'm glad I got to introduce you to it!
Thank you for sharing, glad l found your channel. Check out Diane in Denmark videos l think you’ll love her.

I definitely duplicates in the past as well. I remember buying a backup of this one shirt because I thought it was perfect at the time. Of course, I never even wore out the first one and now I don't have either of them. Lesson learned!
